Marvel vs Capcom 4 is, despite the name, the 5th instalment in the Marvel vs Capcom series.

Plot

It's been a full year ever since the Marvel and Capcom worlds fused together, and the heroes of both worlds have been trying to keep it safe. Ever since Ultron Sigma was destroyed, X and Dante became Avengers, the X-Men returned from a inter-dimensional trip, Haggar is now the president of America, and Tony Stark joined with Dr. Light to create Stark Lite Machinery. It all seemed to be working out rather well until a series of attacks occur out of nowhere, with no reason or plot behind them.

Robot Masters from the past attacking cities, villains gaining huge power boosts, random villains and even heroes attacking, and to top it all of Albert Wesker has joined forces with Dr. Doom to unleash Shuma Gorath into the universe. With chaos all around, the Avengers and the Capcom Heroes unite again to defeat these threats once again. With the X-Men and Fantasic Four returning, along with the return of the old Mega Man, our heroes may stand a fighting chance...but can they defeat the man behind everything?

And how exactly is Deadpool connected to the disappearance of the Infinity Stones?

Gameplay

The game features the same tag-based team feature as previous installments of the series, where each player chooses two characters that can be swapped at any point during a match. It also utilizes an order selection called "Evolved Vs. Fighting System", a modified version of earlier systems seen in other Marvel/Capcom and Capcom vs. SNK crossover games. Like Marvel vs Capcom 3, which features four attack buttons separated as two pairs of low and high-strength punches and kicks, Marvel vs. Capcom 4 uses a simplified, three-button control scheme of undefined low, medium, and high attacks. In order to win, you must defeat both of the other teams opponents via depleting their health with attacks, combos, or hyper combos.

Returning from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the X-Factor. When you get hit and your health depetes, bits of blue health will be left behind. The longer the combo the more blue health is left behind. Once you get hit the blue health goes away. Once you activate the X-Factor, not only do you slowley recover the blue health over time, but your character also gains a speed boost. A new mechanic is added called "X-Strike", where you can channel the power of the X-Factor to supercharge a Level 1 Hyper Combo, boosting its damage for a single use but ending the X-Factor early.

Hyper C. Star Lv. 1 Hyper	Captain America charges full speed at their opponent with their shield, barraging the enemy with hits. This move can block projectiles and even laser beams without losing power or speed. This move can be mashed for additional damage and for it to last longer.
Hyper Stars Lv. 1 Hyper	Captain America does 3 uppercuts of increasing size and power using his shield. This attack has startup invincibility.
Final Justice Lv. 3 Hyper	Captain America dashes at his opponent, stunning them and leaving them open to Cap's flurry of punches and kicks. He then proceeds to throw his opponent in the air and finish the move with an explosive pile driving backdrop, saluting once he gets back up.

Proton Cannon Lv. 1 Hyper	Iron Man summons a gigantic repulsor cannon and mounts it on his shoulder. He then proceeds to fire off an enormous beam directly in front of him. You can also use an angled version of the cannon.
The Hulkbuster Lv. 1 Hyper	Iron Man equips the Hulkbuster suit and uses its rocket thrusters to charge forward with a mighty punch.
Iron Avenger Lv. 3 Hyper	Iron Man flies forward and grabs his opponent, dragging them along the ground before swiftly ascending and releasing the opponent. As the opponent begins to free fall Iron Man hunches forward before thrusting his chest out and firing a supercharged Unibeam at the opponent.

Shin Hadoken Lv. 1 Hyper	Fires a superpowered Hadoken in the form of a giant beam. Ryu can aim this either straight forward or slightly upwards.
Tatsumaki Senp. Lv. 1 Hyper	He winds up, hops into the air and performs many rotating kicks, remaining stationary (unlike this move's special counterpart) and gaining a slight vacuum effect.
Shin Shoryuken Lv. 3 Hyper	Ryu delivers a powerful Shoryuken to the opponent's mid-section, which then follows up with another equally powered strike with the alternating fist (depending on which fist was used to lead the first strike), which is then branched with the fully performed Shoryuken uppercut.

Kikosho Lv. 1 Hyper	Chun-Li will release a omni-directional sphere of energy that not only hits anything in front of it, but also shields her from attacks.
Hoyokusen Lv. 1 Hyper	Chun-Li rapidly kicks the enemy with a flurry of kicks, the last one launching the opponent into the air. The final hit of this attack functions as a Launcher, allowing you to perform an Air Combo afterwards.
Shichisei Ranka Lv. 3 Hyper	Chun-Li does a Spinning Bird Kick that launches the enemy into the air, and will then do a Tenshou Kyaku followed by a Hazanshu that smashes the enemy into the ground with a large flash. It has an invincible start up, making it a good way to punish projectiles for big damage.

Battle Mode

In VS Mode, you can battle head-to-head against a friend or CPU, who you can set the difficulty of. You can set custom rules, like how long the matches lasts or if stage background events will appear, and can choose whatever character you have unlocked. There are a few sub-modes to VS. Mode as well if you wish: Fight a normal match in 1v1 mode, do a tag team with 2v2 Tag mode, witness the insanity of four characters at once with 2v2 Attack mode, or watch the CPU duke it out with each other in CPU Battle Mode.
