Mario Power Tennis: Definitive Edition is an upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch. It is a remake of the original GameCube version that was released back in 2004. The game will feature remastered graphics in a native 1080p resolution, new tennis courts, revamped music, and remade scenes.

New features[]

  • Palette swaps: This was a similar mechanic in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, where the Player 2 color for each character would differ for each character. In the Definitive Edition of this game, each playable character has alternate colors, which may be based on some other elements or resemble their past palettes.
  • Remade opening and ceremony scenes: The opening movie has been remade with no spoilers and the trophy ceremonies have been altered as well.
  • Language selection: Unlike the original game that could limit to one language, the Definitive Edition of this game now has a language selection, where the language can be changed anytime. Available language options include English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, and Dutch.

Opening movie[]

The opening shows Mario making one last serve where the ball gets past Wario and Waluigi, enabling him and Luigi to win the match. Bowser is seen surveying the match via hidden cameras. Later, Wario and Waluigi go to the entrance of the Peach Dome, witness the tournament bracket, and reveal that they have been eliminated from the tournament. Irate, they use crayons to vandalize the images of Mario and Luigi, but a robotic police force is alerted, and chases the two. Wario and Waluigi open a door that leads to a trap, and find themselves in a training room. As they train, the tournament goes on as planned, unbeknownst that Bowser is still in a hidden surveying room. On the night of the final match, Peach, who also has been eliminated, stands by Toadsworth to hear him announce the finalists of the tournament, which is Mario and Luigi vs. Yoshi and Donkey Kong. The finalists take the field, but Peach feels a bit nervous, and suddenly yawns, feeling tired and exhausted after enduring a whole day of tennis matches. The other characters, who were also eliminated from the tournament, witness the match standing by the sidelines or sitting on the benches. At one bench, Toadette is feeling somewhat lonely and nervous, so Daisy sits by her side to help keep her comfortable. Mario and Luigi win the match, and they shake hands with Yoshi and Donkey Kong as a show of sportsmanship. On the other hand, Toadette and Daisy embrace.

After embracing with Daisy, Toadette is given the trophy, while the other characters pose for the camera.

Reception[]

Reviews for Mario Power Tennis: Definitive Edition were somewhat positive. Many felt inspired about the reworked opening scene that didn't contain spoilers, unlike the original GCN version. In addition, many were pleased to see all courts and mini-games return from Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color respectively. Hencemore, giving all playable characters alternate colors made fans state that "it's like another Super Smash Bros. in tennis, but now the throwback has gotten far better than usual".
