Mario Kart X is a 2024 kart racing game developed and published by Nintendo, in collaboration with Namco Bandai Holdings and Lazy Studios. The tenth mainline game in the Mario Kart series, the game acts as a follow-up to Mario Kart 8 on the WiiU, and its enhanced port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, on the Nintendo Switch, being release on Nintendo's upcoming, currently unannounced, console.
Gameplay[]
Mario Kart X maintains the traditional gameplay elements seen throughout the Mario Kart series. Like previous games, it is a kart racing game where up to 12 racers playing as various characters from throughout the Mario franchise, each of differing weight classes, race against eachother in a variety of tracks, utilizing items obtained from Item Boxes to improve their performance or slow down and hinder their opponents. The game brings back several features from the previous Mario Kart games, including coins from Super Mario Kart, bikes, tricks and half-pipes from Mario Kart Wii, sectioned tracks, gliding, underwater driving and kart customization from Mario Kart 7, anti-gravity, Mario Kart TV, and ATVs from Mario Kart 8, and branching tracks from Mario Kart Tour.
Mario Kart X’s main new mechanics come in the form of reworks to the game’s coin and Item mechanics. Coins are now smaller and appear more frequently on the track, with players able to collect a max of 30. Getting hit will cause you to drop your Coins, increasing the more Coins you're holding at a time. Unlike previous games, Coins no longer increase your top speed the more you are holding at a time. Instead, they are tied to three new mechanics:
Pressing and holding the L without an item allows you to perform a Coin Boost, granting a boost to your speed and acceleration, making it a useful to catch up to other racers, quickly turn corners without losing speed, or recover after getting hit, going off-road, or falling off the track. The more Coins you spend during a single boost, the more powerful the boost will become. Pressing the Y button without an item, you can have your Kart perform a Spin Attack. This allows to create a short-ranged shockwave around your kart at the cost of five Coins, spinning out or pushing back nearby racers, or with perfect timing, deflecting incoming items and hazards. If you do have an item, you can instead press Y to perform a Power-Up, increasing your item's power. Each item has a different effect when it’s Powered-up, increasing their versatility and power, but also costs a different amount, with more powerful items costing more Coins to Power-Up.

Techniques[]
- Rocket Start: Launch from the grid with a speed boost by holding the A button just after the 2 on the countdown. Do it too early and you won't get a speed boost, and do it too late and you will spin out.
- Mini-Turbo: By holding a Drift, your tires will start to build sparks. Once you release the R button, you will gain a short speed boost.
- Super Mini-Turbo: Hold a drift for longer, and your blue sparks will turn orange, giving you a larger speed boost when you release the R button.
- Ultra Mini-Turbo: Hold a drift for even longer, and your orange sparks will turn rainbow, giving you a massive speed boost when you release the R button.
- Jump Boost: By performing a hop while jumping off of a ramp, you can perform a trick to gain a speed boost when you land.
- Spin Boost: While in anti-gravity, bump into another racer or a Spin Boost Pillar to gain a small speed boost.
- Super Spin Boost: While in anti-gravity, perform a Spin Attack on either another racer or a Spin Boost Pillar for a more powerful speed boost.
- Slipstream: Race behind an enemy for long enough to build up a slipstream, increasing your speed for a short time.
- Spin Turn: Holding both A and B while steering will allow you to turn on the spot.
- U-Turn: Holding both A and B while steering will allow you to do a U-turn. Only usable in Battle Mode.
- Drift Brake: While you're drifting, pressing the B button will drop your speed briefly, making it easier to turn corners while maintaining your Mini-Turbo. Integral in higher difficulties.
- Horn: Press down on the C-Stick to honk your horn. A great way to taunt other opponents during the race.
Game Modes[]
Adventure[]
Adventure Mode acts as the game's single player campaign mode, serving as a successor to Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS. Players drive through the Mushroom Kingdom, composed of eight interconnected worlds. Each world features eight Missions and a Boss Mission for the player to play in and complete. By completing these missions, they’ll earn Turbo Shards, which act as the game’s main collectible. The better you perform in Missions, the more Turbo Shards you’ll earn. By obtaining enough Turbo Shards, the player can gain the ability to challenge that world’s boss. Defeat that world’s boss, and you’ll gain the ability to use your Turbo Shards' powers to destroy one of the crystal walls, opening up a new area of the Mushroom Kingdom to explore.
Story[]
The time has come, the 10th Mario Kart tournament is finally here! All of Mario's friends and rivals have arrived for another day of fast and action-fueled races through the Mushroom Kingdom, with the grand prize being the mysterious Turbo Star. We see a montage of different characters and tracks, before we get to the final race of the tournament in Luigi Arena. Mario and Bowser are both in the lead trying to overtake one another and bumping into each other multiple times. But just as they are about to touch the finish line, a mysterious new racer speeds right past them, taking 1st place and becoming the champion. As the rest of the racers cross the finish line, they all step out of their vehicles, to see this mysterious racer: a tall, robot dressed up as some sort of superhero.
The robot at first smiles, introducing himself as Rider Axel. At first, Mario holds out his hand for a handshake, wishing to congratulate Axel on his victory, but Axel looks at this gesture and laughs. He states that he came to the Mushroom Kingdom looking for a real challenge, and Mario and his friends were some of the easiest racers he's ever faced. In fact, he thinks the Mario Kart tournament is too boring! Picking up his prize, he looks at the Star, smiling as it radiates some kind of energy. Suddenly, the ground shakes, as massive crystal walls rise up from the ground and the star creates a blast that knocks all the racers out of the stadium. Axel, using the Star’s power, flies into the air and announces himself as the ultimate Mario Kart champion. He then announces to everyone in the kingdom that if there is no one in the Mushroom Kingdom that can compete with him, then he's going to take it over and turn it into the coolest, most dangerous race track the world has ever seen!
As the rest of the racers get up wondering what to do, they look to the sky, seeing multiple crystals falling from the sky. One lands right in front of Mario, and he picks it up, seeing it coursing with energy. E. Gadd then appears, taking one and analyzing it, seeing it has the same energy that both the Turbo Star, and the walls that have begun to spring up around the kingdom. Suddenly, E. Gadd and Mario’s crystals begin to attract one another, before fusing. Naming them Turbo Shards, E. Gadd then hypothesizes that if the racers are able to collect enough of these Turbo Shards, they may be able to create another Turbo Star, one that can rival Axel’s own. With this knowledge, your chosen character steps up and begins their journey, venturing through the Mushroom Kingdom to create a Turbo Star, and stop Rider Axel for taking over. However, the journey won't be easy. The player will not only need to assemble the Turbo Shards to destroy the crystal walls, but Axel has also hired some of Mario's biggest adversaries to guard them, forcing the player to face off against them if they wish to access the next world.
As the player race through the Mushroom Kingdom, completing various Missions, and defeating each of Axel's henchmen, they slowly assemble enough Turbo Shards to create a Turbo Star, allowing them to destroy the final crystal wall. There, the players finally face Rider Axel. Axel sees the player now possessing their own Turbo Star, stating that only a racer of true skill is capable of wielding its incredible power. Finally finding another racer who can match his speed, he challenges the player to a final no-holds-barred race on Rainbow Road.
In the end, your player finally defeats Rider Axel. The rest of the characters celebrate, as Rider Axel smiles, impressing by their skill. Shaking their hand and declaring them as the true Mario Kart champion. Axel says he's never going to try to never use his Turbo Star for evil again. Then, as the other racers wave goodbye, Rider Axel drives off, hoping to find more racers for him to challenge.

Grand Prix[]
In Grand Prix, players compete against computer-controlled racers to obtain trophies in one of ten cups, racing through each of their tracks in consecutive order. Players earn points based on how they place in each track. After completing the final track, the players with the highest amounts of points are given trophies, as well as a Ranking based on their performance. At first, only the Mushroom, Flower, Shell and Banana Cup are available at the start, with the others being unlocked after completing the cup before it in the order. After that cup is unlocked, it becomes available in all other engine classes.
At the start, only the 50cc, 100cc and 150cc engine classes are available. The higher the engine class, the faster players go, and the harder the races will be. Completing 150cc will unlocks Mirror Mode, where tracks are mirrored. Completing Mirror Mode unlocks Reverse Mode, making its first appearance in a console Mario Kart game, where players navigate tracks in reverse. Finally, completing Reverse Mode unlocks 200cc, the fastest and hardest engine class.

Other racers and items do not appear, with the exception of a Triple Mushroom that the player is given at the start. The mode lets you race against Ghosts, either those of Nintendo staff, of other players, or your own, in order to compete with them to get the fastest times. If you manage to defeat a Staff Ghost, the player unlocks an Expert Staff Ghost, which are much harder than normal Ghosts. The player can also view worldwide and local rankings for a course.

Items[]
Mario Kart: X features 28 different items that players can obtain and use from Item Boxes scattered around the track. Four new items have been added to the list of available items: the Rotten Mushroom, Magic Paintbrush, Twister, and Wonder Seed. Alongside that, the Fake Item Box, Bubble, and Ice Flower return as usable items from previous games, while the Coin (as an item) and Crazy 8 have been removed.
The game generally retains how items work in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Players can carry up to two items at a time, with the second item being held in reserve until the first item is used up. Item probabilities are distance-based: the farther from first place a player is, the more powerful items they will obtain. The mechanic of dragging items behind you has been altered, as if you hold an item behind you for too long, it will scrape along the track, causing your vehicle to slow down. This restricts players from holding items behind their vehicle for long periods of time, incentivizing a focus on skill and timing when it comes to defense. Dragged items will also still occupy an item slot, forcing you to use it if you want the item slot to open back up.

Trivia[]
- Mario Kart X serves as a sort of reboot of Mario Kart Something, sharing a majority of its roster, as well as some of its tracks.
- Initially, Mario Kart X was planned to be a sequel to Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, named Mario Kart: Double Cross. However, the creators felt dissatisfied with the project, feeling the special item system added way to much bloat to the game's item system. Thus, the idea was scrapped, instead being replaced with Powered-Up Items obtained by spending coins, a mechanic originally planned for Mario Kart Something, but later scrapped.
- Many of the gameplay mechanics and changes were inspired by Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart and its sequel, Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, including the implementation of the Coins, the Coin Boost and Spin Attack, and changes to items like the Fake Item Box.
- Unused data in the games files suggest several characters were planned or scrapped in the roster including: Baby Yoshi, Stella from Princess Peach: Showtime!, the Broodals, and Whomp King. Baby Yoshi was replaced with Baby Daisy in the final release, Stella was scrapped in favor of Madame Grape and instead makes a cameo in the Showtime Circus stage, the Broodals were scrapped due to time restraints, and Whomp King was replaced with Foreman Spike during development.
