Mario Kart Remix is the ninth (twelfth if counting 8 Deluxe, Tour, and Home Circuit) installment in the Mario Kart franchise. The game features the same formula as every previous Mario Kart game, as well as importing various elements from Mario Kart Tour. Instead of adding new gimmicks, Mario Kart Remix instead opts to feature a story mode, similar to Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS. As well, the game features bi-weekly content updates, usually featuring new alternate costumes for the characters. Mario Kart Remix is a launch title for the Nintendo Split system, with it being pre-installed to the system in the Deluxe set.
Gameplay[]
Mario Kart Remix plays similar to most previous mainline Mario Kart games. The player controls one of many Mario characters in their own Vehicle/Wheel/Glider combo, and race others to place the highest. Along the tracks are glassy Item Boxes which, if crashed into, shatter and begin an item roulette. The item the roulette stops is the one the player is given. Items can be used to help the player, hinder their opponents, or both. The further back the player is, the more likely they are to get powerful items. The player can hold up to two items at once, and use either one individually. Every character, Kart, Wheels, and Glider has their own impact on the player's stats, though some may share attributes.
In addition to the returning underwater driving, gliding, and anti-gravity mechanics from past titles, Mario Kart Remix introduces new Orb Panels, which cause the player's vehicle to shrink and enter a capsule similar to the Orbs from Mario Parties 5, 6, and 7, while their driver proceeds on foot. Although the player can re-engage their kart at any time, remaining outside allows the player to jump over obstacles they otherwise couldn't, as well as access special paths along Grind Rails. However, this comes at the expense of stats and the ability to carry multiple items.
Lakitu is more lenient in Mario Kart Remix versus Mario Kart 8, allowing skilled players to take more powerful shortcuts. However, some massive skips are still forbidden by means of holographic walls which appear if the player gets too close. Gliding and underwater driving return from Mario Kart 7, while anti-gravity driving returns from Mario Kart 8. Glider controls are now less restricted than they were in Mario Kart 8, being closer to their incarnation from Mario Kart 7.

Similar to Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart Tour, Mario Kart Remix features a multitude of racing suits to customize the player's Avii racers. Like in Mario Kart: Ultimate Challenge, an Avii Racing Suit exists for every playable character, in addition to several other costumes, which are listed below. Selecting an Avii Racing Suit which corresponds to a playable character will give the player their stats, as does selecting one listed below with a character in its Stats column. Selecting an Avii Racing Suit with "???" in its stats column will have its stats change depending on the player's selected Avii. The Standard, Wii, Yoshi, Birdo, Toad, and Shy Guy Avii Racing Suits can be coloured freely.

Changes from past games[]
- The maximum racer count has been increased to 24.
- Retro Tracks now use their original Start, Super Star, Final Lap, Race End, and Results themes.
- Retro Tracks also feature their original Item Box designs and sound effects.
- Most characters have unlockable alternate costumes.
- The player can now choose to have their rear view visible in a window in the corner at all times.
- Sounds made by Shells are now in time with the track music.
Menus[]
The main menu, instead of being detached from the rest of the game, now takes place in the Golden Bell subway station, the location of the returning Super Bell Subway track.
Each menu takes place in a different area of the station, with the camera transitioning between them. However, like in past entries, the menus load immediately, with the camera just being for show. In the background, the various racers can be seen interacting with each other.
Menu Music[]
Added in Version 1.2, the player can enter the Options menu to change the menu music.

Grand Prix[]
The main attraction, Grand Prix is where the player goes to race all 5 tracks in a cup consecutively, in the hopes of getting first place. When the player picks Grand Prix, several options, known as Classes, are available. As well, completing a given Class will automatically complete all other Classes slower than it, or that have Modifiers it uses. All modes use the Default laps and, unless specified, the Doubles item rule and Standard game mode,

Speed Class | Description | Modifier | Description | Game Mode | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
50cc | The slowest speed class. | None | The tracks are completely normal. All other Modifiers can be combined. |
Standard | The standard Mario Kart formula. No bells or whistles, just try to place in first. |

150cc | Formerly the highest speed class in Mario Kart. | Reverse | The tracks are played backwards, from finish to start. | GP Elimination | Similar to Elimination, but players are only eliminated at the end of the race. |
200cc | The second-fastest speed class. Unlike Mario Kart 8, all tracks were designed with this in mind. | Trick | Many trickable surfaces and opprotunities to earn points in the Points game mode are added to the tracks. | Timed Elimination | After the first player finishes the lap, everyone else has a limited amount of time to, or gets eliminated. |
300cc | Speeds so intense, you'd think you're playing F-Zero! | Upside-Down | The tracks are vertically inverted, with high points becoming low and vice-versa. | Survival | Similar to the Battle Mode of the original Mario Kart 8, Survival Mode has every player with Balloons, with all players that run out being eliminated. |
Encore | Every track has additional hazards and modified theming, similar to Mirror Mode in Mario Kart Wonderland and Crazy Mode in Mario Kart: Ultimate Challenge. As well, the following tracks are changed from section tracks to lap tracks:
|
Points | Similar to Mario Kart Tour, the player earns points for performing various actions, including hitting other racers, destroying obstacles, performing Tricks or boosts, and finishing a lap. The player with the most points at the end of the race wins. | ||
Item Mode | Description | Difficulty | Description | Other | Description |
Singles | Each player can only carry one item at a time. | Easy | The CPUs aren't really trying. | Laps | How many laps the tracks will be. Can be set to their default, or a value from 2 to 9. |
Doubles | The player can carry up to two items with each Item Box giving one, like in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. | Normal | The CPUs are putting in a notable effort. | Racers | Select how many racers are in the race. Can be set to:
|
Triples | The player can carry up to three items, with each Item Box giving one. | Hard | The CPUs are giving it their all. | Item Rain | If enabled, items will fall from the sky. Can be set to only a few items, or loads of them. |
Twin | Each item box gives the player two items. Twin mode can be combined with Doubles or Triples, giving the player either one or two additional single-item slots in addition to the primary two-slot reel. |
Expert | The CPUs are less concerned with winning, and more with you losing. | GP Items | Items are distributed in the same way as Mario Kart Arcade GP DX: Each player is randomly given three items they are able to use, usually one Throw Forwards item, one Place Behind item, and one Special item. The Lucky 7 and Remix 10 do not appear in this mode. |
Frenzy | Each item box gives the player three items, like in Mario Kart Tour, Getting three of a kind grants the player a Frenzy, giving them Super Star invincibility and unlimited use of the item. Frenzy mode can be combined with Doubles or Triples, giving the player either one or two additional single-item slots in addition to the primary three-slot reel. If combined with Triples, the player can also get a Frenzy if any item in the primary reel matches those in both secondary reels. |
Super Expert | The classic Mario Kart experience. | ||
Collection | Hitting an Item Box will give the player an extra of whatever item they currently have. Can be combined with Doubles or Triples, with each Item having a random chance of gaining another iteration. | Nightmare | Mama mia... |
Online Play[]
Online Play has been greatly expanded from past installments. Online can played with either people from the same country, around the globe, or with friends.
Mode | Description |
---|---|
Endurance Race | A race with far more laps than what is normal. The number of laps can vary between 10 and 50. |
Race Royale | An ultra-chaotic mode, up to 50 racers are thrown into a track with five balloons, and only one objective: Survive. In addition to Survival, Timed Elimination rules are in effect: Everyone who takes too long to pass the line after the player in first is out. This mode keeps on going until only one person remains. |
Story Mode[]
The main story of Mario Kart Remix involves the Mario Kart crew hosting their biggest tournament yet. However, they soon find themselves being terrorized by a group of strange individuals: A circular robot named Motos, a Mario lookalike called Super Donkey, an elderly Yoshi, a strange bipedal cat named Neille, a bizarre ghost called Scripulous Fingore, and a mysterious man in a racing outfit who refers to himself as The Karter.
Ultimately, they will all be revealed to be underlings of none other than Dimentio.
Story Mode, in summary[]
Until I create the Story Mode subpage, it will be summarized here.
- At the end of every chapter, the chapter's opponent will become available as a playable character.
- Chapter 1: Motos
- A relatively easy chapter, meant to introduce some of the mechanics of Story Mode.
- The Chapter Boss against Motos is held on Wii Toad's Factory, in the dark of night.
- Chapter 2: Super Donkey
- The Chapter Boss against Super Donkey takes place on Ancient Island, a reference to how Yoshi's Island reuses assets from Super Donkey.
- Chapter 3: Elder Yoshi
- Racing against an old man, who is surprisingly good.
- Elder Yoshi's race takes place on Windy Way.
- Chapter 4: Neille
- The Chapter Boss against Neille is on Bit-Slip Line.
- Chapter 5: Scripulous Fingore
- You cannot ignore me forever, Mario.
- Fingore's race takes place on REMIXDS Luigi's Mansion.
- Chapter 6: The Karter
- Seemingly the leader of the strange foes, The Karter is the toughest opponent yet.
- The Karter's race happens on Delfino Express.
- Chapter 7 Prologue
- Dimentio makes his presence known, as he attempts to kill his lackeys for failing.
- With quick thinking and a Blue Spiny Shell, Bowser manages to prevent it.
- This, however, causes Dimentio to focus on Bowser, hypnotizing him and turning him into Fury Bowser.
- As thanks for saving him, The Karter joins Mario's side, also revealing his true name of Kenji.
- Chapter 7: Fury Bowser
- A majority of the opponents in this chapter are either members of the Koopa Troop, Fury Shadows, or Fury Cats.
- The Chapter Boss against Fury Bowser takes place on Fury Raceway.
- Fury Bowser always has a Mega Mushroom, and is accompanied by eight Fury Shadows.
- Chapter 8: Dimentio
- With Bowser back to normal, everyone brings the fight right to Dimentio.
- The seemingly-last Chapter Boss against Dimentio takes place on Rainbow Road.
- After the player beats him, Dimentio transforms into Super Dimentio.
- The Final Boss Race against Super Dimentio takes place on Demented Dimension.
- Like Fury Bowser, Super Dimentio always has a Mega Mushroom. As well, he regularly gets Lucky 7s and Remix 10s during the entire race.
- However, if the player is behind Super Dimentio (which they almost certainly are), the first Item Box they hit on the final lap will always contain a Spiny Blue Shell. Their odds of getting powerful items such as Lightning, Golden Dash Mushrooms, and Super Stars increases as well.
- Chapter DX: Eggman
- Added alongside the Bell Cup.
- Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik shows up to cause problems on purpose.
- The bonus Chapter Boss is against him and several Egg Pawns on Death Egg.
- Eggman briefly cheats during lap 2, but stops after the player hits him with a Spiny Blue Shell.
- Completing this chapter unlocks Eggman.
- Chapter Ω: ???
- Added alongside the S Cup.
- After recovering the Chaos Emeralds, Master Emerald, Super Emeralds, and Phantom Ruby, a vortex to a strange space between the worlds opens.
- In this mysterious space, the heroes must defeat all their past foes once more, plus a few new faces.
- The seeming Chapter Boss is against Bass, from Mega Man.
- After defeating him, Dr. Wily appears, gloating as he appears aboard his new Wily Machine Remix.
- The Wily Machine Remix and Wily Capsule are both destroyed, before Dr. Wily gloats that the heroes won't be able to defeat his robot army. His gloating is cut short by Bowser Jr. transforming his father into Fury Bowser, who quickly burns Wily Castle to a crisp.
Bosses[]
Similar to Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Remix features boss battles. However, they are now divided into four categories:
- Minibosses are the first bosses encountered in a world, and generally have some arbitrary goal to reach.
- Boss Races are enountered after Minibosses. A Boss Race tasks the player with completing a course before a special opponent can.
- Bosses are the third type of boss encountered. Bosses all have a health bar, which the player must deplete.
- Chapter Bosses are always encountered at the end of a chapter. A Chapter Boss is simply another racer, but with special conditions to give them the upper hand. The player must complete the course before the Chapter Boss can.

- Ancient Island
- The track where the boss race against Super Donkey takes place. Seemingly, a primordial version of Yoshi's Island.
- Bit-Slip Line
- The track where the boss race against Neille takes place. A location seemingly inside the code of Super Paper Mario.
- Delfino Express
- The track where the boss race against The Karter takes place. A fully-realized version of the scrapped Delfino Express from Super Mario Sunshine. Various scrapped locations can be seen in the distance.
- Fury Raceway
- The track where the boss race against Fury Bowser and his Fury Shadows takes place. Takes place on Lake Lapcat, in the middle of a raging thunderstorm.
- Demented Dimension
- The track used for the final race against Dimentio. Similar to Velo's Challenge from the GBA version of Crash Nitro Kart, features the player warping between various courses, with the ones here being Remix Circuit, Giga Home, Koopa Carnival, Origami Castle, Crocodile Isle, and Rainbow Road. A section track.

- REMIX World Tour
Extra Cups[]
The eight Extra Cups were added for free at various points post-launch.
Mario Cup[]
The first Extra Cup, the Mario Cup consists entirely of early-game tracks. Despite the name, only half the tracks are actually named after Mario.
- N64 Luigi Raceway
- GCN Mario Circuit
- 3DS Toad Circuit
- Wii U Mario Kart Stadium
- REMIX Mario Bros. Circuit
- A Remixed version of both Wii Luigi Circuit and Wii Mario Circuit.

- Bob-Omb Factory
- REMIX Snow Panic
- A remixed version of Snow Panic from Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, which bares little similarity beyond being in a snow-covered Diamond City.
- Instead of reusing the same music as GP Diamond City, instead uses a remix of the instrumental to Penny's Song from WarioWare: Get It Together! During a final lap, a synthesizer is added to the tune of the vocals.
- Wario's Woods
Leaf Cup[]
- 3DS DK Jungle
- Chuck Stadium
- A sports stadium full of Chargin' Chucks, who assault the racers with various sporting goods.
- NS Piranha Plant Pipeline

- Castle Bleck
- A track in Count Bleck's castle from Super Paper Mario. Occasionally, wormholes take the racers to various locations from Super Paper Mario.
Lightning Cup[]
- Green Hill Zone
- A track on the iconic Green Hill Zone from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. This track features surprisingly-tight turns, and a loop-the-loop which is crossed without anti-gravity. Angel Island is also visible in the distance.
- The music is a remix of Green Hills Zone from the Game Gear version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
- SNES? Choco Island 3
- Choco Island 3 from Super Mario Kart, which is only present in the oldest known prototype, hence the question mark after SNES.
- Toronto Turbo
- A track taking place in Toronto, the capital city of Ontario.
- The music is actually a remix of Go K.K. Rider from Animal Crossing.
- Remix Circuit 2
- A track taking place in the same location as the first track in the game, Remix Circuit, in the dead of night. This would technically be a Remix track, but it's in the same game as its original, so it doesn't count.
- Death Egg
- A track taking place aboard Eggman's signature space station from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Essentially the successor to Rainbow Road, Death Egg is the hardest track in Mario Kart Remix.
- The music is a remix of Supporting Me from Sonic Adventure 2.
Ruby Cup[]
- GBA Yoshi Desert
- Stone Palace
- A track taking place in a giant stone castle on the edge of a cliff, which is briefly travelled down in an antigravity section.
- Crystal Mountain
- Tour RMX Rainbow Road 1
- Rocket Hideout
S Cup[]
- Rabbid Raceway
- Wily Castle
- Forest Maze
- Mario Kart All-Stars
- Effectively the second Rainbow Road, Mario Kart All-Stars features several segments lifted from the 12 other Rainbow Roads in Mario Kart Remix.
- The track takes place higher than some other Rainbow Roads, though still in the planet's atmosphere. From this height, the locations of almost every track in the game can be seen.
- Various Nintendo and Sega characters who didn't make the cut for the roster can be seen in the background.
- Throughout the track is a flying train with Bandanna Waddle Dee, Joker, and Ridley on it. Bandanna Waddle Dee throws down Coins and helpful items, Joker throws down Item Boxes, and Ridley throws down dangerous items and Fake Item Boxes, but may sometimes throw an incredibly powerful item.
- Partway through is a three-way fork in the road, with the frontrunner of the current lap choosing whether the next section of the track will be either underwater, gliding, or antigravity, similar to Race of AGES from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
- The music in this track is a medley of various other songs from throughout the series.
- SNES Mario Circuit 1
Extra Cup Tour[]
Added alongside the Shell Cup, the Extra Cup Tour behaves similarly to the other Cup Tours, being unlocked after earning a trophy on every Extra Cup. However, as more were added post-launch, the Extra Cup Tour would repeatedly re-lock itself. The Extra Cup Tour is, predictably, a marathon of all 15 (ultimately 40) Extra Tracks, back to back:
- GCN Mario Raceway
- All 13 (eventually 38) other Extra Tracks, in random order
- Death Egg (3DS Bowser's Castle prior to the Bell Cup)
All-Cup Tour[]
The All-Cup Tour is only unlocked after getting a trophy in the Nitro Cup Tour, Retro Cup Tour, Weird Cup Tour, and Story Cup, which in itself requires completing Story Mode. The ultimate challenge for Mario Kart pros, the All-Cup Tour challenges the player with completing all 140 (145 after the the Mario Cup was added, 150 after the Bowser Cup, and then back to 140 after the Shell Cup) tracks in Mario Kart Remix, back-to-back, with no breaks. For obvious reasons, this mode is only available in Grand Prix mode. Due to its sheer length, the All-Cup Tour actually has a warning screen, where the player needs to verify that they know exactly what they're getting into! The track order in this monstrosity is:
- Remix Circuit
- The other 138 (143, 148) after updates) tracks, in random order
- The rules about retro Rainbow Roads no longer apply
- Demented Dimension
Deluxe All-Cup Tour[]
Added alongside the Bell Cup. Unlocked by getting trophies on the All-Cup Tour and the final version of the Extra Cup Tour, the Deluxe All-Cup Tour is an even bigger challenge than the regular All-Cup Tour, as it adds all 30 Extra Cups to the mix. As this mode is even longer than the All-Cup Tour, the player has to confirm that they're ready to commit on the warning screen twice. The track order in the Deluxe All-Cup Tour is:
- Remix Circuit
- The other 164 tracks, in random order
- Demented Dimension, 3DS Rainbow Road, REMIX World Tour, and Remix Circuit 2 in random order
- Death Egg
Following the release of the S Cup, the Deluxe All-Cup Tour was instead updated to feature this track distribution:
- Remix Circuit
- The other 173 tracks, in random order
- Demented Dimension, 3DS Rainbow Road, REMIX World Tour, Death Egg, and SNES Mario Circuit 1 in random order
- Mario Kart All-Stars
Mario Kart Classic Course Expansion[]
The Mario Kart Classic Course Expansion is an additional wave of downloadable content. Unlike the additional drivers and courses, the Mario Kart Classic Course expansion is needs to be purchased with real money.
The Mario Kart Classic Course Expansion is stated to add a large number of classic courses from across the Mario Kart series to Mario Kart Remix. The contents of the expansion appear to contain all courses from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour that are not in Mario Kart Remix. However, similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass, all Mario Kart 8 Deluxe courses appear to be ported directly from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which means that certain tracks i.e. DS Mario Circuit are extra crispy. Al non-SNES courses from Mario Kart Tour that did not appear in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass have gotten a graphical upgrade, though.
Battle Mode[]
Battle Mode returns once more, with more features than ever. Every game mode in Battle Mode can be played in one of two modes:
- Points
- Survival
As well, all modes can (with some exceptions) be played either in free-for-all or in up to six teams.
Game mode | Points | Survival | |
---|---|---|---|
Balloon Battle | The de facto Mario Kart battle mode, Balloon Battle has every player trying to hit other players with items to rack up points. Every player starts with five Balloons, and loses one every time they get hit. Hitting another player is worth one point, but running out of Balloons costs the player half of their points, and respawns them with three Balloons. | In Survival mode, Balloon Battle operates on last-man-standing rules. There are no points. Instead, once a player runs out of balloons, they are eliminated and become a Ghost Driver. As a Ghost Driver, the player can throw Item Boxes. | |
Shine Thief | In Shine Thief, the player needs to hold onto a Shine Sprite which spawns randomly around the map for 20 seconds. The 20 seconds can accumulate over time, but if they drop it when less than five seconds remain, the timer resets to five seconds. A player can be drop the Shine Sprite by getting hit by an item or hazard, or by being boosted into. In team mode, the timer is 25 seconds long for matches with 4-6 teams, and 30 seconds long for matches with 2 or 3 teams. |
In Survival mode, Shine Thief becomes Ztar Thief. Instead of a single Shine Sprite spawning randomly on the map, multiple players spawn with a Ztar, and need to pass it to others by bumping into them. Every 20 seconds, anyone who has a Ztar is eliminated and becomes a Ghost Driver. Any player with a Ztar gains the same boosts they do from a Thunder Cloud. The number of Ztars slowly increases over time. | |
Coin Runners | In Coin Runners, the objective of the game is to collect the most Coins. Many Coins spawn along the track, and the player with the most at the end of the time limit wins. Like in normal gameplay, hitting a racer makes them drop Coins, with the number of Coins dropped being greater than in a race. | In Survival mode, every player starts with 10 coins, with their collected coins slowly counting down. Once a player runs out of Coins, they are eliminated and become a Ghost Driver. | |
Bob-Omb Blast | Bob-Omb Blast is similar to Balloon Battle, with the main difference being that, in Bob-Omb Blast, the only items are Bob-Ombs. The player can carry up to ten Bob-Ombs at a time, and can hold the button to throw them farther. As well, if the player already has 10 Bob-Ombs, then they can find red Super Item Boxes, which upgrade their ten Bob-Ombs into one Giga Bob-Omb. | In Survival mode, the same rules as Survival Balloon Battle apply, except eliminated players turn into Mini Bomb Karts. As a Mini Bomb Kart, the player can drive into other racers to make them explode and lose a Balloon. After detonating, the player turns from a Mini Bomb Kart into a Ghost Driver for 20 seconds, before becoming a Mini Bomb Kart once more. | |
Piranha Peril | In Piranha Peril, every racer has a souped-up Piranha Plant. This Piranha Plant has slightly-increased range, and unlimited usage, though one biting doesn't give the player as much of a speed boost. Other items can be used alongside the Piranha Plant. Getting eaten by a Piranha Plant causes the player to be treated as out-of-bounds and promptly respawns. Players who get hit are temporarily stunned and unable to eat other racers. The player earns a point whenever their Piranha Plant eats another racer. Whoever has the most points at the end of the time limit wins. | Survival Piranha Peril changes depending on whether the game is being played solo, or in teams. In solo mode, every player has three Balloons, and loses one every time they get eaten by a Piranha Plant. Once eliminated, the player becomes a Mini Bomb Kart, which is able to stall other players by exploding them, though this doesn't remove any balloons. In team survival mode, Piranha Peril becomes Renegade Roundup. In this mode, the players are divided into the Authority and the Renegades. Only the Authority has the Piranha Plants, which are now equipped with sirens which go off when they're close to a Renegade. If an Authority captures a Renegade, the Renigade is transported to one of up to three flying jail cells throughout the course. Remaining Renegades can free their colleagues by driving on a key switch directly below each cell, giving the switch presser and all freed Renegades a brief speed boost. | |
Turf War | In this turbocharged version of an Inkopolis classic, all players are equipped with an upgraded Splattershot which regenerates ink over time. As well, all other items are retooled to place ink. Every player or team has their own ink colour, and driving in enemy ink slows the player down. At the end of the timer, whoever has covered the course in the most ink wins. | Since Splatoon doesn't have any form of survival mode, the Survival Mode of Turf War gives every player three balloons. Every time a player gets hit, one balloon pops, creating a small explosion of ink in the colour of whoever threw the item. If a player loses their third balloon, the ink explosion is much larger, and they respawn with three balloons again. | |
Moon Scramble | In Moon Scramble, Power Moons appear all over the track, with the players needing to collect them. Getting hit with an item, boosted into, or jumped over with a Feather will cause a player to lose a Power Moon. Periodically (default is every 30 second), the Power Moons will reset, with those collected being added to their holder's point total. After the total timer has elapsed, whoever has the most points wins. | In Survival Mode, Moon Scramble changes to be similar to Shine Runners from Mario Kart DS. After every interval, the player(s) with the least Power Moons get eliminated and turned into Ghost Drivers, and the Power Moons don't reset unless any eliminated players had any. The first interval is also twice as long. | |
Star Coin Chase | In Star Coin Chase, many Star Coins will appear on the track, with the player needing to collect them and give the Star Coins to a big Lakitu who roams the course to score points. Soon after a Star Coin is exchanged, a new one spawns somewhere. Getting hit with an item, boosted into, or jumped over with a Super Leaf will cause the player to lose a Star Coin. | In Survival Mode, the giant lakitu is replaced with King Lakitu, who strikes the players with the lowest score with lightning every 30 seconds, eliminating them and turning them into Golden Ghost Drivers, who can throw Star Coins. | |
Super Strike | In Super Strike, the game basically turns into Rocket League. In the middle of the stage is a giant soccer ball, and all players must work to get it into their enemy team's goal. Super League can only be played in two teams. | In Survival Mode, the basic mechanics of Super Strike remain, but all players have five Balloons, like they do in Balloon Blast. If a driver runs out of Balloons, they become a Ghost Driver for 30 seconds, except they can use items to impact the ball from beyond the grave. |

- Mushroom Mart: A department store, similar to those seen in Pokémon games. The store has three floors and a roof, which can be accessed via anti-gravity tunnels in the stairwells.

Paint Jobs[]
Unlike previous installments in the Mario Kart series where Karts either changed colours depending on the driver or had muliple individual colour variations, Mario Kart Remix introduces a new Paint Job mechanic akin to those seen in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled and Mario Kart Wonderland. Paint Jobs allow the player to individually customize the colours of their current Kart loadout. This functionality replaces the golden parts from previous titles with the ability to unlock gold paint, allowing for any part to effectively have a gold variant.
Colours in bold are starting colours.
Red | Orange | Yellow | Lime | Green | Blue | Cyan | Purple | Magenta | Pink | Black | White |
Brown | Grey | Maroon | Teal | Indigo | Beige | Sandy | Rose | Amber | Cream | Goldenrod | Jade |
Navy | Midnight | Eggplant | Seafoam | Vermillion | Famicom Grey | Dark Grey | Hylian Green | Frost Blue | Crimson | Royal | Violet |
Spring Green | Pink Gold | Metal | Bronze | Silver | Gold | Platinum | Rainbow | Onyx | Invisible |
While the other colours can be obtained via ???, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Rainbow have dedicated unlock requirements:
- Bronze: Get a trophy on all Nitro, Retro, and Weird cups.
- Silver: 100% complete Story Mode
- Gold: Beat all 150cc Staff Ghosts
- Platinum: Complete All-Cup Tour in 3rd or higher.
- Rainbow: 100% complete Mario Kart Remix (base game content only).
- Onyx: 100% complete Mario Kart Remix (after all updates)
Items[]
Mario Kart Remix features the single largest selection of items in the series, encompassing most items from both the main and arcade games. Items are divided into Types, which indicates how they're used.
- Place Behind items are normally placed behind the user, but can be thrown forwards by holding Up on the Control Stick, Direction Buttons, or + Control Pad.
- Throw Forwards items are normally thrown forwards, but can be thrown backwards by holding Down on the Control Stick, Direction Buttons, or + Control Pad.
- Special items are used directly, and cannot be thrown.
Both Place Behind and Throw Forwards items can, unless otherwise specified, also be held behind the user to protect them from other items or to spin out other racers on contact. However, if they're held out for too long, the item will be dropped. While Triple items orbit the user's kart and don't get dropped normally, if the player gets hit, all remaining items will be dropped. Even if the item hasn't been properly deployed yet, its effects are still active.
Item | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Mushroom | Special | When used, boosts the player forwards, as well as allowing them to shortcut on offroad terrain. |
Triple Mushrooms | Special | Three Mushrooms that orbit the kart and can be used individually. Disappears when hit by any racer or another item. With a Triple Mushroom Frenzy, the player will be boosted faster than if they had a regular Mushroom frenzy, |
Banana | Place Behind | Causes anyone who drives into it to spin out, losing control of their kart and sliding forwards for a few seconds. |
Triple Banana | Place Behind | Three Bananas that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, all three bananas will be throw/placed at once. With A Triple Banana Frenzy, the Bananas will be placed in sets of three. |
Green Shell | Throw Forwards | A green Koopa Shell. When thrown, bounces off the walls repeatedly. Anyone who gets hit by one will spin out, and get stopped briefly. A Green Shell will break if it hits an opponent, another Item, or the walls for the seventh time. |
Triple Green Shell | Throw Forwards | Three Green Shells that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the Green Shells will be thrown at once, with roughly a 15° angle between them. With a Triple Green Shell Frenzy, the Green Shell triple shot will always be used. |
Red Shell | Throw Forwards | A red Koopa Shell. When thrown forwards, it homes into the first racer ahead of the user. If thrown behind, it loosely homes into the nearest racer. Shatters on contact with any racer, item, or wall. |
Triple Red Shell | Throw Forwards | Three Red Shells that orbit the Kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, each shell will be thrown at once, and each will home into a different racer. With a Triple Red Shell Frenzy, the Red Shell triple shot will always be used. |
Boo | Special | Sends out a Boo to steal an item from someone in front of the user. Also turns the user invisible until the Boo returns with an item, letting them phase through items, course hazards, and other racers, though not offroad terrain. If nobody has an item, then Boo will give the user a Mushroom. With a Boo Frenzy, each item a racer gets will be copied, with the duplicate given to the user. |
Lightning | Special | Shocks every other racer with lighting, causing them to shrink and lose their items. Shrunken racers are not only slower, but can be flattened by full-size racers driving over them, causing them to stop for a few seconds. Shrunken drivers will return to normal size in reverse order of placement. |
Feather | Special | Causes the user to immediately jump in the air and perform a Jump Boost, allowing them to take shortcuts that would otherwise be impossible. |
Super Star | Special | Turns the user completely invincible, destroying every item and spinning out every racer they touch, as well as gaining a speed boost and the ability to drive on rough terrain. Replaces the music with a remix of the classic Mario series Super Star theme. Can't appear in Frenzy mode. |
Poison Mushroom | Place Behind | Causes whoever touches it to shrink as if they were struck by Lightning. |
Golden Mushroom | Special | Gives the player unlimited Mushroom uses for a limited time. In Frenzy mode, the Golden Mushroom acts as a wild card, counting as any item. Cannot appear in Frenzy mode. |
Fake Item Box | Place Behind | An item that looks almost identical to an Item Box, except for the upside-down question mark. If someone takes the bait and drives into it, they will spin out for an extended period of time while their item is given to the user. By holding one behind while driving into a real Item Box, the user won't get an item but will replace the Item Box with a Fake Item Box until it's hit. With a Fake Item Box Frenzy, the Item Box replacement happens automatically. |
Blue Spiny Shell | Special | The most infamous of Mario Kart items, a blue Koopa Shell with spikes. Swerves recklessly around the course in an attempt to spin out as many racers as possible. Once it passes the player in second, it will sprout its iconic wings, before making a beeline to the racer in first, quickly circling them once, before divebombing and creating a massive blue explosion, launching the unlucky racer in the air for a prolonged period of time. Can only be destroyed with a Super Horn, or evaded with an expertly-timed Mushroom. With a Blue Spiny Shell Frenzy, each Blue Spiny Shell will target a different racer, though they will only explode on impact if their target isn't the racer in first. The music is also temporarily replaced with the final boss theme from Super Mario Galaxy 2. Blue Spiny Shells are more likely to appear the further ahead first place is, and the more current human players there are. |
Heart | Special | Creates two hearts that orbit the user. The hearts last for a limited time, and block anything that would normally spin out the racer. Each Heart can be used once. As well, blocking a physical item will steal it. Does not provide protection against explosions or Super Stars. |
Yoshi Egg | Throw Forwards | Rolls forwards and homes in on the nearest racer like an oversized Red Shell. On impact, shatters and drops between 3 and 5 items, which are a random combination of Coins, Mushrooms, Bananas, Poison Mushrooms, stationary Green Shells, Stars, Fake Item Boxes, or Bob-Ombs. If Yoshi uses it, the spots will match his colours. If Birdo uses it, the egg will be entirely white. |
Giant Banana | Place Behind | A comically oversized banana peel. If someone drives into it, they will spin out for a prolonged period of time. When hit, the Giant Banana splits into four regular Bananas. |
Bowser Shell | Throw Forwards | Rolls around like a giant Green Shell, effortlessly toppling everyone in its wake. Can only be destroyed with a Super Horn, an explosion, or by hitting a wall for the sixteenth time. |
Bob-Omb | Throw Forwards | When thrown, explodes after a few seconds, or immediately upon impact. Unlike other Throw Forwards items, the Bob-Omb is more akin to a Place Behind item with the commands swapped, as "throwing" one backwards will instead place it behind the user. Holding a Bob-Omb behind for too long will cause it to explode on the holder. However, blocking an item with a Bob-Omb will have no effect to its holder. With a Bob-Omb Frenzy, Bob-Ombs that are thrown forwards explode on impact, while ones that are placed backwards will try to chase down other racers. |
Triple Bob-Omb | Throw Forwards | Three Bob-Ombs that orbit the kart and can be used individually. Unlike a singular Bob-Omb, these will not explode of they're held out for a prolonged period of time. By holding the button, all three Bob-Ombs will be thrown at once, with roughly a 15° angle between them. With a Triple Bob-Omb Frenzy, Bob-Ombs thrown forwards will always use the Bob-Omb triple shot, while also exploding on impact. If thrown backwards, the two side Bob-Ombs will explode on impact, while the center Bob-Omb will chase down racers. Though the Triple Bob-Omb is technically new, it is classified as a returning item due to its identical nature to the Double Bob-Ombs+ from Mario Kart Tour. |
Bullet Bill | Special | Transforms the user into a Bullet Bill, which rapidly flies forwards to bring them further ahead. By default, the Bullet Bill travels in the center of the track, but the user can steer it left and right to crash into other racers. With a Bullet Bill Frenzy, the player can shoot smaller Bullet Bills which behave similarly to Torpedo Teds. |
Blooper | Special | Appears on the screen of all players in front of the user, before temporarily covering their screen in ink and reducing their traction. The ink can be removed by using any speed boosting item or Boo, driving on a Boost Panel, or by going into/out of water, depending on if the victim was in water when they got inked. As CPUs don't have a screen, their traction is instead reduced more heavily. |
Mega Mushroom | Special | Temporarily turns the player giant. Like this, they can spin out other racers on impact, or squash them by driving directly into them. The music is also replaced with the Mega Mushroom theme. The Mega Mushroom can withstand two hits before wearing off prematurely. With a Mega Mushroom frenzy, the player cannot be shrunken down with items, and always flattens other racers. |
Thunder Cloud | Special | Automatically appears once rolled. Increases the user's top speed and acceleration, as well as not slowing down of offroad terrain, but the buzzer sound that plays when it appears should clue them into the fact that they shouldn't have it. The Thunder Cloud can be passed onto other racers by bumping into them, giving them the boost. However, after 10 seconds, the Thunder Cloud will strike whoever has it, shrinking them as though they were hit with Lightning. With a Thunder Cloud frenzy, the user will gain an electric aura, instantly shrinking anyone who comes near them. |
POW Block | Special | Appears on the screen of everyone in front of the user. Gets struck three times with consistant intervals, with the third one detonating the POW Block, causing all racers on the ground to drop all their items and spin out, coming to a complete stop. However, by pressing Jump right as the POW Block detonates, the racer will still drop their items, but not lose any speed. With a POW Block Frenzy, the strikes happen less frequently, but every strike after the third detonates the POW until the Frenzy ends. |
Fire Flower | Throw Forwards | Lets the player throw fireballs straight forwards or backwards. Gives the player ten seconds to shoot fireballs from the first shot, with each fireball using one second, allowing for a maximum of ten fireballs. However, only a maximum of three fireballs can be active. By holding the button, the player can instead use the Fire Flower all at once to unleash a wave of fireballs, similar to the Fireballs item from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! With a Fire Flower Frenzy, up to six Fireballs can be active at once, and the fireball wave takes less time to charge. Using Fireballs also doesn't consume the Frenzy timer. |
Super Leaf | Special | Gives the user's kart a tail. Like this, they can press the Item button to perform a spin attack to spin out other racers, collect Coins, destroy items, and slow their fall. By holding the button, the user will perform the spin attack rapidly, but for less time. The Super Leaf lasts for 10 seconds normally or 5 seconds with the continuous attack, or until the user gets hit. With a Super Leaf Frenzy, the player can repeatedly use the spin attack as much as they like, with no cooldown. |
Lucky 7 | ??? | Gives the player seven items, chosen completely randomly. Each item orbits the kart, with the one closest to the front being the one used. By holding the button, all seven items will be used in rapid succession. With a Lucky 7 frenzy, the music will be replaced with a remix of Mario Kart 7's title theme. Every time the user presses the button, an item will be randomly chosen, and promptly used. Holding the button during a Lucky 7 Frenzy will rapidly fire seven random items, then generate seven more. |
Boomerang Flower | Throw Forwards | Gives the user a boomerang, which can be thrown forwards up to three times. Every time the boomerang is thrown, it will come back to the user. It disappears from the item slot while it's not in the user's hands, meaning they can grab another item, though having no vacant slots means the boomerang disappears. The boomerang can spin out enemy racers and draw in Coins. By holding the button, the boomerang will instead circle the user twice before flying off. With a Boomerang Flower Frenzy, one boomerang will always circle the user, while they can throw another an unlimited number of times. |
Piranha Plant | Special | Mounts a potted Piranha Plant on the front of the user's kart. The Piranha Plant will periodically bite forwards, giving the user a speed boost as it does so. If the user is near Coins, items, interactable objects, or other racers, the Piranha Plant will bite at them. A Piranha Plant can also eat a Blooper. As well, the user can press the button to make the Piranha Plant bite manually, or hold the button to make it bit continuously. The Piranha Plant lasts a limited time, with its timer decreasing slightly with every bite. With a Piranha Plant Frenzy, the Piranha Plant can stretch farther, and it biting does not consume the Frenzy timer. |
Super Horn | Special | When used, emits a louder version of the user's horn, destroying literally any item in its range, as well as drawing in Coins and spinning out any racers it hits. The only item in Mario Kart Remix that can overpower the Blue Spiny Shell. |
Ice Flower | Throw Forwards | Lets the player throw ice balls straight forwards or backwards. Gives the player ten seconds to shoot ice balls from the first shot, with each ice ball using one second, allowing for a maximum of ten ice balls. Getting hit by an ice ball will cause the racer to freeze solid, losing control of their kart and sliding forwards for a few seconds. Similar to a Fire Flower, only three ice balls can be active at a time. Like with the Fire Flower, the user can hold the button to use the entire Ice Flower to create a wave of Ice Balls. With an Ice Flower Frenzy, up to six ice balls can be active at a time, and the charge attack takes less time to charge. Firing Ice Balls during an Ice Flower Frenzy does not consume the Frenzy timer. |
Banana Barrels | Special | Creates a barrel on either side of the user's kart, which fire Bananas. A total of 16 Bananas are fired from the barrels before they disappear. The barrels also disappear if the user gets hit. By using the item "backwards", the barrels will fire their Bananas backwards, with them landing behind the user. With a Banana Barrels Frenzy, the user is surrounded by singular Bananas. |
Mushroom Cannon | Special | Appears in front of the user's Kart, firing Mushrooms forwards. Up to ten mushrooms will be fired. With a Mushroom Cannon Frenzy, Mushrooms will be fired in sets of three, and the user will be surrounded by singular Mushrooms. |
Coin Box | Special | Mounts itself on the user's head. Sprays a total of 40 Coins all over the place, potentially including larger denominations of Coin. With a Coin Box Frenzy, the Coin Box shoots even more Coins, the likelihood of them being more valuable is increased, and the user is surrounded with gold Coins, receiving them at a constant rate. |
Dash Ring | Special | Creates three rings along the track, which boost anyone who drives into them. |
Bob-Omb Cannon | Special | Mounts itself in front of the user's kart, firing a total of ten Bob-Ombs, which explode on impact. With a Bob-Omb Cannon Frenzy, a second Bob-Omb Cannon appears, allowing for even more Bob-Ombs to be fired. As well, the user is surrounded by singular Bob-Ombs. |
Hammer | Throw Forwards | A set of hammers that bounce along the ground. If thrown forwards, five Hammers are thrown, and will home in on any racers that are particularly close. If thrown backwards, three Hammers are thrown and they do not home in. During a Frenzy, regardless of direction, batches of three Hammers are thrown at a time. |
Giga Bob-Omb | Throw Forwards | A giant Bob-Omb that bounces a heck of a lot more, before exploding with a blast radius even larger than that of a Blue Shell. With a Giga Bob-Omb Frenzy, the Giga Bob-Ombs are somewhat larger, and have a notably larger blast radius. |
Super Bell | Special | Rings above the user three times, making a shockwave every time it rings. The shockwave can destroy certain items, and spin out other racers. |
Capsule | Throw Forwards | Two-segment capsules with each segment in one of many colours. When thrown, the capsules bounce roughly towards other racers. The player can throw three Capsules. By holding the button, the player can throw all three Capsules at once in a spread burst. I could've sworn they were called Megavitamins. |
Item | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Basin | Throw Forwards | Flies forwards. Disappears on contact. If it manages to hit anyone, they will be flattened by the Basin as though they were crushed by a Thwomp or a Mega Mushroom-powered racer. |
Triple Basin | Throw Forwards | Three Basins which orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the Basins will be used all at once, with a roughly 15° angle between them. With a Triple Basin Frenzy, the Basin triple shot will always be used. |
Needle Bomb | Throw Forwards | Flies forwards. If it hits a racer, it puffs up and pops their tires, causing their top speed and handling to temporarily drop. If it hits a wall, it will instead puff up like a pufferfish and become a somewhat slow moving hazard, with the tire popping still in effect. |
Time Bomb | Throw Forwards | Rapidly waddles forwards until it hits a racer, attempting to chase after them. Once it does, it hovers above them and begins counting down from 15. Similar to the Thunder Cloud, whoever has the Time Bomb can pass it off to another racer by bumping into them. When the Time Bomb hits 0, it detonates, blasting its victim like a Blue Shell. With a Time Bomb Frenzy, the Time Bombs are better at chasing down their targets, and they count down from 3 instead of 15. Due to its size and blast radius, the Time Bomb appears to be its smaller variant, the Time Bomb (S), as opposed to the larger Time Bomb (L) |
Tornado | Throw Forwards | Flies forwards, disappearing when it hits a wall. If a Tornado hits a racer, they will be thrown in the air, stalling them. |
Triple Tornado | Throw Forwards | Three Tornadoes that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the three Tornadoes will be combined into one big Tornado that can bounce off of walls twice, but shrinks after each impact. With a Triple Tornado Frenzy, the big Tornado will always be used. |
Pie | Throw Forwards | A pie that is thrown forwards. If it successfully hits someone, their screen is covered in cream and they lose traction, similar to a Blooper. Also like a Blooper, CPUs lose more traction than human players. |
Triple Pie | Throw Forwards | Three Pies that orbit the player. By holding the button, the three Pies can be thrown in a horizontal wall. With a Triple Pie Frenzy, the wide Pie shot will always be used. |
Poison Banana | Place Behind | Identical to a regular Banana, except anyone who drives into it will also unsteadily turn from side to side. |
Jump Seal | Throw Forwards | Disappears on contact. If it hits a racer, they will be temporarily unable to Jump and thus, unable to Drift, perform a Mini Turbo, or dodge a POW Block while grounded. |
Item Seal | Throw Forwards | Disappears on contact. If it hits a racer, they will temporarily be unable to use Items, though they can still collect them. |
Black Shell | Throw Forwards | A black Koopa Shell. Identical to a Green Shell, except it explodes on contact. |
Triple Black Shell | Throw Forwards | Three Black Shells that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the Black Shells will be thrown at once, with roughly a 15° angle between them. With a Triple Black Shell Frenzy, the Black Shell triple shot will always be used. |
Smokescreen | Place Behind | Creates a large cloud of smoke, which obscures the view of anyone who drives into it. With a Smokescreen Frenzy, the user will be obscured by a cloud of smoke, but can see perfectly fine, but they will obscure the view of anyone who drives too close. |
Triple Smokescreen | Place Behind | Three Smokescreens that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the user can use all three at once to create a wide trail of smoke behind themself. With a Triple Smokescreen Frenzy, the smoke trail will always be active. |
Snow Cloud | Throw Forwards | If it hits a racer, begins snowing on them, causing them to lose lots of traction and some amount of speed. |
Goo Mushroom | Special | Causes the user and their Kart to transform into goo, which can phase directly through other racers. This item was originally called the Slimy Mushroom, but its design and name were changed to be based on the Goo from the Luigi's Mansion series. |
Sledgehammer | Special | Can be swung back and forth to flatten other racers. By holding the button, the Sledgehammer is repeatedly swung for a total of 5 seconds. With a Sledgehammer Frenzy, the Sledgehammer is automatically swung, while the player can also throw regular Hammers. The Sledgehammer serves as a replacement for the various melee items in Mario Kart Arcade GP, using the design of the 10T Hammer. |
Barrel | Throw Forwards | Rolls forwards, smashing on contact and dropping three to five items like a Yoshi Egg. |
Flaming Tender | Special | Causes the user's kart to burst into flames, being able to spin out any racers they hit, as well as automatically destroy anything ice-based and not slip on ice. |
Feeling Fine | Special | Immediately puts the user at their top speed, removing any negative status effects that may have been inflicted and giving them a temporary shield. Though the Feeling Fine is new as an item, it shares its function with various items from the Mario Kart Arcade GP series. |
Rally-X | Place Behind | Drives around, creating pixelated dust clouds. Driving into one causes the racer to lose some amount of speed. |
Boss Galaga | Throw Forwards | Attempts to home into the nearest racer, grabbing them in its tractor beam, causing them to be slowed. |
Pooka | Throw Forwards | Bounces around, growing larger with each bounce. After the sixth bounce, it will pop and disappear. |
Fire Crackers | Place Behind | When driven over, explodes into one of many colours of smoke, briefly obscuring the driver's view and slowing them down. A given set of Fire Crackers can be set off a total of five times. |
Mouse Cracker Bombchu |
Place Behind | Moves in circles on the track. Explodes when driven into. Occasionally, the item will appear as a Bombchu from The Legend of Zelda, though it behaves identically. |
Pixel Ghost | Throw Forwards | A sprite of a ghost from Pac-Land. Moves back and forth. Spins out anybody it touches, like a moving Banana Peel. If any of Blinky's alts use the Pixel Ghost, it will match their colour instead of being red. |
Soft Gummy | Throw Forwards | Temporarily decreases the top speed of whoever it hits, as well as causing them to become stretched. |
Gold Shell | Throw Forwards | A golden Koopa Shell. Identical to a Red Shell, except it explodes on contact, somewhat similar to a Blue Spiny Shell. |
Triple Gold Shell | Throw Forwards | Three Gold Shells that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the Triple Gold Shell will be used at once, with the three shells targeting different racers. With a Triple Gold Shell Frenzy, the Gold Shell triple shot is always used. |
Gold Basin | Throw Forwards | A version of the Basin made of solid gold. Instead of flattening the racer, it instead causes them to spin out. |
Ultra Hand | Special | A boxing glove affixed to an old Nintendo toy. When used, the user punches with it, spinning out anyone in its path. By holding the button, the user will repeatedly extend and retract the glove for five seconds. With an Ultra Hand Frenzy, the user will gain a second Ultra Hand. |
Fan | Special | A paper fan which is swung about to either the front-left or front-right of the user, spinning out anyone it hits and launching them a fair distance away. By holding the button, the user will repeatedly swing the Fan for about five seconds. With a Fan Frenzy, the user will gain a second fan, so that both sides will be fanned concurrently. |
Yo-Yo | Special | Spins around the kart for five seconds, slowly moving inwards. Spins out anything it touches. |
Magic Paintbrush | Special | When swung, fires a glob of paint. If it lands on the ground, the paint becomes a hazard, while if it hits a racer, their screen is covered in graffiti, as well as losing speed and traction. If used by an Inkling or Octoling, they will fling paint in their colour. |
Triple Magic Paintbrush | Special | Three Magic Paintbrushes which orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the Magic Paintbrushes will be used at once to swing it like a sword repeatedly, flinging paint everywhere. With a Triple Magic Paintbrush Frenzy, the brush barrage attack will be used, as well as granting another Magic Paintbrush to fling more paint. If used by an Inkling or Octoling, they will fling paint in their colour. |
Porcupuffer | Throw Forwards | Airswims as it roughly homes in on the nearest racer in front of the user. If it hits, it pops their tires, causing them to temporarily lose top speed and handling. |
Triple Porcupuffer | Throw Forwards | Three Porcupuffers which orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, all three Porcupuffers can be used at once, with each one targeting a different racer, akin to a Triple Red Shell. With a Triple Porcupuffer Frenzy, the Porcupuffer triple shot will always be used. |
Wild Top | Special | Places the user and their kart on top of a spinning top. Like this, their control becomes somewhat awkward, but hitting another racer will spin them out, and cause them to stop. |
Magnet | Special | Has two completely different functions depending on whether the user attempts to use the magnet "forwards" or "backwards". By setting the Magnet "forwards", it will draw Coins and positive items such as Mushrooms or Stars towards the user, while setting it "backwards" will have it repel most negative items, though not Bowser Shells or Spiny Blue Shells, and other racers from the user. With a Magnet Frenzy, both Magnet types will be active at the same time. |
Scuttlebug | Shoot Forwards | Fires sticky spiderwebs that create patches of slowness on the ground, or slow down other racers that it hits. Lasts for ten seconds, with each web shot using up one second. With a Scuttlebug Frenzy, the web shot does not consume the Frenzy timer. |
Item | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Triple Fake Item Box | Place Behind | Three Fake Item Boxes that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the all three can be placed in a row, evenly spaced so as to be more convincing. Holding the button while driving into a genuine Item Box will replace it and its neighbors with the Fake Item Boxes, though this maneuver always uses up all three even if only one or two are replaced. With a Triple Fake Item Box Frenzy, Fake Item Boxes will always be placed in sets of three and will always replace normal Item Boxes. |
Torpedo Ted | Throw Forwards | Fired forwards, and explodes on contact. Similar to a Black Shell, except it flies above ground and is unaffected by gravity, allowing it to hit certain targets it otherwise couldn't. If held out, appears in front ofthe kart instead of behind it unless actively aimed backwards. |
Triple Torpedo Ted | Throw Forwards | Three Torpedo Teds that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, the three Torpedo Teds will appear on either the front of the back of the kart, with the two on either side aiming outwards, before aiming back inwards, being fired in the directions they're pointing when the button is released. With a Triple Torpedo Ted Frenzy, all three Torpedo Teds are fired at at the same angle, unless the user adjusts it by holding the button. |
Oil Slick | Place Behind | Creates a standard oil hazard on the ground. Cannot be thrown forwards. |
Triple Oil Slick | Place Behind | Three Oil Slicks that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, all three Oil Slicks will be used to create one big oil slick. With a Triple Oil Slick Frenzy, the giant oil slick will always be created. |
Super Acorn | Special | Gives the user the "wings" of a character's Flying Squirrel form. The next time they perform a jump boost, they will automatically begin gliding. From the first Jump Boost, the Super Acorn has a total time of 10 seconds, though once time runs out, the glider will remain out until the user lands. |
Superball Flower | Throw Forwards | Spawns a Superball. Superballs are similar to Green Shells or Fireballs, except they can only travel at 45-degree diagonals relative to the racer who threw them. As well, unlike the Fire Flower and Ice Flower, the Superball Flower does not have a timer, instead giving the user a flat rate of four Superballs. |
Burning Mushroom | Special | Causes the user to shoot forwards uncontrollably fast like a superpowered Mushroom, leaving a flame trail behind them. With a Burning Mushroom Frenzy, the user will continually leave a trail of flames. |
Triple Barrel | Throw Forwards | Three Barrels which orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, all three Barrels can be used at once, with the two at the edges angled slightly outwards relative to the one in front. With a Triple Barrel Frenzy, the Barrel three-shot will always be used. |
Mega Cloud | Special | An item similar to the Thunder Cloud, but with the fundamental difference that, instead of shrinking whoever gets struck by it, they are instead grown as if they used a Mega Mushroom. As well, instead of a buzzer, the Mega Cloud instead makes a dinging noise. |
Splattershot | Throw Forwards | Fires blobs of Inkling ink a fair distance forwards. If anyone is inked, they will spin out briefly while their screen is obscured by ink. The Splattershot has a finite amount of ink. By holding the button, ink will be fired rapidly. If an Inkling uses the Splattershot, its ink will match their colour. |
Net | Throw Forwards | Literally just a giant fish net. If it lands on anybody, they will be tangled in the net and forced to stop for a brief moment. |
Weird Mushroom | Special | Vertically stretches the user and, to an extent, their kart, temporarily increasing their top speed and off-road capability, at the expense of acceleration, handling, and weight. |
Lasso | Throw Forwards | If it hits an object or racer, the user will be pulled towards it. If another racer is hit, they will be slowed down. The Lasso can be swung up to three times. |
Baddie Box | Special | Mounts itself on the front of the kart, spewing out various enemy hazards such as Goombas, Mechakoopas, Bob-Ombs, and Green Shells. |
Magic Wand | Throw Forwards | Fires a burst of colourful magic forwards. Anyone who gets hit has their stats temporarily decreased. Up to five shots can be fired. |
Mirror Wand | Throw Forwards | Fires a burst of blue magic forwards. Anyone who gets hit will have their controls and screen flipped temporarily. |
Smart Bomb | Throw Forwards | One of the weapons in team Star Fox's arsenal, and an iconic Smash Bros. item. Shortly after being thrown, creates a massive explosion that slowly gets larger. As maximum size, even a Blue Spiny Shell's explosion is smaller. |
Pokéball | Place Behind | If anyone touches or comes too close to the Pokéball, they will be caught inside as it slowly starts rolling forwards, with them needing to mash the item button to break free. |
Wrench | Throw Forwards | A wrench that is thrown straight forwards. Spins out whoever it hits. |
Quadruple Wrench | Throw Forwards | Four wrenches that orbit the kart and can be used individually. There's four because they're really small so three would be silly. Holding the button will fire the wrenches in different directions. With a Quadruple Wrench Frenzy, the wrench spread-shot will always be used. |
Turnip | Throw Forwards | Lobbed in an arc. Spins out anyone it hits. |
Triple Turnip | Throw Forwards | Three Turnips that orbit the kart and can be used individually. By holding the button, all three Turnips can be combined into one Giant Turnip from Super Mario Advance. With a Triple Turnip Frenzy, the Giant Turnip will always be used, |
Stupendous Stew | Special | Mounts itself above the user. Spills blobs of stew near the user, creating hazards on the ground in the form of stew puddles. |
Stack-Up Blocks | Place Behind | The blocks from Stack-Up. Placed in a single tall formation. When hit, the five stacked blocks will topple over, creating a wider hazard. Once toppled, the blocks are destroyed individually by touching them. If thrown forwards, the blocks will topple on contact. |
Dice Block | Special | Thrown like a Throw Forwards item. When it lands, shatters, revealing a number from 1 to 10. Each number has a different effect:
|
Dry Shell | Throw Forwards | A shell similar to a Red Shell except, when it hits a racer or wall, it crumbles into a pile of bones, before reforming and going after another racer. The Dry Shell can target three racers. If a Dry Shell successfully hits a racer, it will not target them again. |
Spike Ball | Throw Forwards | Rolls forwards, somewhat affected by physics. Keeps going after it spins someone out. Shatters on contact with a wall. |
Double Cherry | Special | Creates a clone of the user, with both of them being offset relative to the user's initial position. Both iterations follow the user's input, though any item gained by one will also be gained by the other. Either iteration is destroyed if spun out, with the other one becoming the regular player. |
Bulborb | Place Behind | A creature from PFN-404, which is rather diminutive versus the size of the racers. When placed, will chase down the nearest racer that isn't its user, and will start biting at them to spin them out. |
Metroid | Throw Forwards | A dangerous alien lifeform from the Metroid universe, even in its larval state. When thrown, will chase after the nearest racer, including the user. If it makes contact, it will latch itself to their head, stealing an item if they have it, slowing the racer down, and pulling their kart from side to side. |
Hot Coffee | Special | When used, temporarily increases the user's top speed and acceleration. |
Spark Pylon | Special | When used, creates an electric field around the user for a brief period. The electric field can destroy most items and spin out other racers, though it doesn't shrink them. A Spark Pylon can be used three times. |
Buzzy Beetle Shell | Throw Forwards | Identical to a Red Shell, except instead of breaking when it hits a racer, keeps moving to hit the first racer in front of them, slowly working its way to first. After passing the racer in first, the Buzzy Beetle Shell wll behave like smaller Bowser Shell, bouncing off walls and plowing through racers. If a racer blocks a Buzzy Beetle Shell, it will bounce over them while destroying the held item, skipping them in the sequence. |
Brick Block | Special | When used, creates four chunks of bricks which orbit the kart. These brick chunks can deflect items or spin out racers on contact, but if the player gets hit, they all disappear. Unlike other orbiting items, the bricks cannot be fired. Once the bricks are deployed, the Brick Block itself is removed from the player's item slot, allowing them to use another item. Brick Blocks cannot stack. |
P-Switch | Special | When used, a P-Switch icon appears on all players' screens, shortly before it mashes flat, activating it. All Coins turn into Brick Blocks, while Blue Coins spawn around the track. The Brick Blocks have the same hardness as Crates. Lasts for nine seconds. Also replaces the music with a remix of the P-Switch theme from Super Mario Bros. 3. With a P-Switch Frenzy, the music will instead be based on the P-Switch remix from NES Remix 2. |
Chaos Emeralds | Special | Only available after clearing the bonus final chapter. The seven Chaos Emeralds. When used, the Chaos Emeralds briefly swirl around the user, before giving them a golden glow, while buffing their stats and letting them destroy items on contact. With a Chaos Emerald Frenzy, the player's stats are maxed out, with some characters having unique music:
|
1-Up Mushroom | Special | When used, a 1-Up Mushroom icon appears near the player's item roulette. If they fall out of bounds (such as into lava), they will be immediately teleported back to the track, with the 1-Up Mushroom being used. |
Remix 10 | ??? | Surrounds the player with ten items which orbit the kart: Mushroom, Green Shell, Red Shell, Banana, Blooper, Star, Bob-Omb, Super Horn, Blue Coin, and Poison Mushroom. Pressing the button will use the item closest to the front, while holding it will always use them in the following order: Star, Banana, Red Shell, Blooper, Blue Coin, Green Shell, Bob-Omb, Mushroom, Poison Mushroom, and Super Horn. With a Remix 10 Frenzy, the ten-item sequence will always be used. As soon as the Super Horn fires, it can be used again. |
Item | Description |
---|---|
Item Box | Gives whoever drives into it a random item. More powerful items are generally given to players who are father behind. In Nitro Tracks, the Item Box resembles its design from Mario Kart 8, but with the rainbow-coloured sheen from Mario Kart 7. In Retro Tracks, the Item Box changes its design to that of the current track's original game. The respawn time of Item Boxes has been returned to its rate in Version 2.0.0 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. |
Twin Item Box | Gives whoever drives into it two random items at the same time. Only appears in the Doubles and Triples item rules. |
Triple Item Box | Gives whoever drives into it three random items at the same time. Only appears in the Triples item rule. |
Coin | Gives whoever drives into it one Coin. Can also be given from Item Boxes, where they're used immediately like in Mario Kart Tour. Coins from Item Boxes become less common as racers collect more coins, stopping altogether at 20 Coins. Appears as a Bell in NS Animal Crossing, and a Green Rupee in NS Hyrule Circuit. |
Red Coin | Gives whoever drives into it two Coins. Appears in set locations, but may also replace regular Coins. Appears as a silver-coloured Bell in NS Animal Crossing, and a Blue Rupee in NS Hyrule Circuit. |
Blue Coin | Gives whoever drives into it five Coins. Appears in set locations, but may also replace regular Coins. Also given from a Remix 10. When collected, draws in all nearby Coins. Appears as a small Bell Bag in NS Animal Crossing, and a Red Rupee in NS Hyrule Circuit. |
Green Coin | Gives whoever drives into it ten Coins. Appears in set, out-of-the-way locarions, but may also replace regular Coins. When collected, draws in all nearby Coins. Appears as a medium Bell Bag in NS Animal Crossing, and a Purple Rupee in NS Hyrule Circuit. |
Purple Coin | Gives whoever drives into it thirty Coins. May replace other Coins, namely those of higher denominations. When collected, draws in all nearby Coins. Appears as a large Bell Bag in NS Animal Crossing, and a Silver Rupee in NS Hyrule Circuit. |
Silver Coin | Gives whoever drives into it fifty Coins. Rarely replaces Blue Coins or Green Coins, and can be spawned from a Coin Block Frenzy. When collected, draws in all nearby Coins. Appears as a golden Bell Bag in NS Animal Crossing, and a Gold Rupee in NS Hyrule Circuit. |
Crate | A crate, generally made of wood. Slows down whoever drives into it somewhat, being destroyed in the process. If driven into with a Mushroom boost doesn't slow down the driver. May sometimes drop a Green Shell, Banana, or Mushroom. |
Chaos Emerald | Six of the seven Chaos Emeralds are hidden in various out-of-the-way locations in the final track of every main Nitro Cup, while Mecha Sonic is in posession of the seventh. After collecting the first six in Grand Prix and defeating Mecha Sonic in Story Mode, the player will unlock Super Sonic as a costume for Sonic. Chaos Emeralds are also needed to unlock the secret chapter in Story Mode. |
Emerald Shards | Fragments of the Master Emerald. One is hidden in various out-of-the-way locations in the final track of every Retro Cup, while Metal Sonic is in posession of the last. After collecting all 14 in Grand Prix and defeating the Egg Fusion in Story Mode, the player will unlock their character's respective super costume. Emerald Shards are also needed to unlock the secret chapter in Story Mode. |
Super Emeralds | Giant, superpowered versions of the Chaos Emeralds. Colourless Super Emeralds will appear in various out-of-the-way locations in the final track of each Weird Cup. After collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds and fifteen Emerald Shards, the player can restore the Super Emeralds by driving into them in Grand Prix. Restoring the Super Emeralds will increase the player's likelihood of getting powerful items like Lightning and Remix 10s. Super Emeralds are also needed to unlock the secret chapter in Story Mode. |
Ruby Shards | Fragments of the Phantom Ruby scattered throughout Mario's world following the ending of Encore Mode in Sonic Mania Plus. Nine of them are hidden in various out-of-the-way locations in the final track of every Extra Cup and Demented Dimension, while Infinite's power comes from the tenth. After collecting all nine in Grand Prix and defeating Infinite in Story Mode, higher denominations of Coins will become more likely to appear. Ruby Shards are also needed to unlock the secret chapter in Story Mode. |
Memes[]
Mario Kart Remix got its fair share of memes, as one can expect.
- Look how much longer it takes to select Wario
- A reference to this video. The punchline is that, instead of the actual Wario (who only takes four down presses to reach), the character selected is instead SNES Mario's GBA Wario alt.
- More like Bowser Kart
- A joke about the large number of Bowser's minions being playable.
- More Like Wario Kart
- Similar to the above, a joke about both the entire row of Wario characters and the fact that nearly every Wario and Waluigi track in series history has been brought back.
- More like Nintendo Kart
- The last of the "More like _____ Kart" memes, about the large number of crossover characters and the Weird Cups.
- Super Mario Bros. Z is not canon
- A reference to the SpongeBob episode Band Geeks and its "No, Patrick, mayonnaise is not an instrument" scene, with Eggman reminding either Metal Sonic or Mecha Sonic that Super Mario Bros. Z is not canon Mario or Sonic media, and that they are not a god.
- "IT'S CANON IF I WANT IT TO BE!" is a sub-meme spawned from this meme, featuring Metal Sonic collecting the Chaos Emeralds following the release of Version 3.0. Also used as a common explanation for why Mecha Sonic has one of them.
References to other games[]
- Wario Land 4: The Golden Pyramid track is based on this game, with its iconic "Hurry Up!" track being used for the final lap.
- Wario World: Wario Table uses a remix of Greenhorn Forest.
- Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix: The music is specifically based on Starring Wario from this game, with it being especially noticeable in the final lap.
- New Super Mario Bros.: Trans-Mushroom Highway uses an upbeat remix of this game's credits theme.
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The player can unlock the Ancient Minister as an alternate costume for R.O.B.
- Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit: Giga Home is based on this game, featuring its Gates, Signs, and the track's music is a remix of Mario Kart Live's main theme.
Trivia[]
- Yoshi's colour variations are listed in chronological order
- Shy Guy's colour variations are listed the same way they were in Mario Kart 8, with the exception of Pink and Blue, which are listed first due to them appearing in the original Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Honey Queen wasn't originally planned to return, but did after the author realized that the main problem with her inclusion was that she was put in over Waluigi.
- Most, if not all, of the alternate costumes from Mario Kart Tour were renamed.
- A majority of them changed the name format of the costume from "[character] ([form])" to "[form] [character]".
- However, some of them have received more unique renames, such as Shy Guy (Pastry Chef) becoming Chef Guy, and Waluigi (Vampire) becoming Count Waluigi.
- R.O.B.'s Ultra R.O.B. 64 was originally planned to simply be called "R.O.B. 64", but was renamed to avoid confusion with R.O.B. 64 from Star Fox.
- SNES Mario is the only character who was considered an alt in Mario Kart Tour to be promoted to a full playable character.
- SNES Mario has alts of the other SNES characters because they all ultimately use the same sprite mechanics.
- This is also why he has alts of the entire Mario Kart: Super Circuit cast.
- Most of Ashley's alts originate from the Nintendo Badge Arcade application on Nintendo 3DS.
- This also extends to her Crazy Galaxy and Alien alts, Claudia, Coco, Vanessa, and Anna, who all originate from a 2017 April Fool's joke from said application.
- Someone vandalized the article to add a "Rick Ashley" alt for Ashley as a reference to Rick Astley and, by extension, rickrolling. This was left in as it was pretty funny.
- A fair amount of Retro Tracks prior to the Moon Cup previously appeared in Mario Kart Wii. This is due to the author's nostalgia subconsciously pulling them towards said tracks.
- All of Dimentio's lackeys have their own histories with the Super Mario series:
- Motos, Super Donkey, and Elder Yoshi originated from the Nintendo gigaleak.
- Motos is a scrapped enemy from Super Mario 64.
- Elder Yoshi appears as early graphics from Super Mario World.
- Super Donkey is from the scrapped game of the same name, assets of which would later become Yoshi's Island.
- Neille is one of the unused cats from the Korean version of Super Paper Mario.
- Scripulous Fingore is a fairly-infamous fake character who various people jokingly claimed was real.
- Though The Karter is original to Mario Kart Remix, his real name, Kenji, was inspired by Fantendo user Mario Kotabe vandalizing several articles to add a character named Kenji to them.
- However, he was retroactively decided to use the design of the placeholder character from Super Mario Kart.
- Motos, Super Donkey, and Elder Yoshi originated from the Nintendo gigaleak.
- The Timed Elimination mode was partially inspired by the Elimination mode of Mario Kart Something.
- Baby DK is the only character that appears in Mario Super Sluggers who is absent from Mario Kart Remix.
- Despite the plethora of Donkey Kong characters, there are currently no plans to add him.
- As the roster is now in its final state, Baby DK will not be in Mario Kart Remix.
- Jigglypuff is the only fighter from the original Super Smash Bros. to not be a racer in Mario Kart Remix.
- However, this would later be rectified in an update.
- Not counting character-specific cups in Mario Kart Tour, the only cup missing from Mario Kart Remix is the Luigi Cup, from Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit
- Mario Kart Remix is the first installment in the Mario Kart series to:
- Have all past drivers be playable.
- Feature Donkey Kong Jr. with a new 3D model.
- Include characters from third parties that weren't involved in the development of the main game (Sonic, Eggman, Tails, Knuckles, Rabbid, Mega Man, Geno).
- Feature content from all major Mario spin-offs (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, WarioWare, Wario Land, Yoshi's Island, and Donkey Kong Country).
- Feature content from the arcade titles in a home installment.
- Introduce only Baby characters that weren't created for Mario Kart since Baby Mario's and Baby Luigi's introduction in Double Dash (Baby Wario).
- Feature content that was cut from previous Mario Kart games. (XXL Raceway, Tubular Tunnels, Wario Table, SNES? Choco Island 3).
- Feature characters who also appear as items (Piranha Plant, Boo, ? Block, Bob-Omb)
- Feature multiple characters as a single racer (Dribble & Spitz, 9-Volt & 18-Volt, Viruses, Paper Bros., Wario's Woodsmen).
- There isn't actually any rhyme or reason as to why the entire casts of Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and Mario Kart DS are playable with their respective graphics aside from "It's funny".
- Nightmare difficulty was added following the author getting really mad at Mario Kart Tour while trying to achieve Kart Pro.
- Following every update, and counting tracks from Arcade GP/2 which had their layouts reused, every track from Mario Kart Arcade GP DX appears in Mario Kart Remix except for Peach Castle.
- A brief segment of Peach Castle also appears at the end of VR Arcade Circuit.
- Likewise, by the same rules, every track from Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 appears except for Yoshi Park 1 and Pac Mountain.
- Remix Tracks were originally planned to be listed in the main cups, but following the cancellation of paid DLC and the introduction of Weird Cups, they were moved to a new Remix Cup as, otherwise, they would restrict how much new content would be featured.
- A "Scale Mode" was originally planned, which would scale the tracks vertically in the same way as an unused feature in Mario Kart 64, but it was replaced with Encore Mode.
- The Retro Cups were originally planned to be named in the format of "[Console] Cup", with "[Console]" being the console that featured the respective cup's tracks, but this was changed to instead use the cups from the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Course Booster Pass, plus the unused Shine Cup from the original Mario Kart 8.
- The NES Cup is a remnant of this idea.
- The Shine Cup was originally planned to be titled "Rainbow Cup 1", while the Rainbow Cup was originally titled "Rainbow Cup 2".
- Retro content from Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart Tour originally had the subtitle of WII, WII U, and TOUR, but this was changed from all-caps to normal capitalization, to be in line with the subtitle scheme used in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart Tour.
- When Mario Kart Remix was revealed, it was initially done in the style of a news broadcast, with the ticker reporting that Grumble Volcano was experiencing a record low temperature. As Grumble Volcano is an active volcano in a lake of lava, this meant that a new Mario Kart was announced when Hell froze over.
- The state of Grumble Volcano mentioned is playable in-game, as REMIXWii Grumble Volcano.
- Not counting Remix Tracks, Mario Kart Remix is 54% retro tracks.
- The Ruby Cup and S Cup were added to further the originally-coincidental theme of the number six appearing in most of the author's works.
- Specifically, there would be six additional cups after the primarily-retro Mario Cup and Bowser Cup, and that there would be 180 tracks.
- The S Cup uses the same icon that Mario Kart 64 used for its Special Cup.
- The Road Lifter was added so that Eggman could finally drive a forklift.
- The Gold Glider 8 is the only gold part to return due to it having a unique pattern versus the Super Glider 8.
