Mario Kart 9 is the ninth main instalment of the Mario Kart series. It marks the return of half-pipes from Mario Kart Wii, after a break of two games. It also introduces a Free Roam mode, where you can drive around tracks without consequence, and a 150CC Reverse speed class, in which you race around the tracks in reverse. Mario Kart 9 also brings back the long-anticipated Mission Mode, last seen in Mario Kart DS.

The gameplay is overall very similar to other games in the series, with up to twelve racers per track, and tricks, half-pipe mechanics, diving, gliding and antigravity returning from recent games. Karts, motorbikes and ATVs return from Mario Kart 8. You can play with up to 3 other players locally offline, and up to 11 different people online.

There are 6 speed classes:

  • 50CC, the slowest speed, good for beginners.
  • 100CC, a medium speed, with more aggressive AI.
  • 150CC, a high-speed race with smart AI. The standard speed for Time Trials.
  • Mirror 150CC, tracks are mirrored so left-turns are now right-turns, etc. Unlocked by winning 8 different cups in 150CC.
  • Reverse 150CC, the track is played in reverse. Extra ramps have been added to make some courses possible. Unlocked by winning 8 different cups in Mirror 150CC.
  • 200CC, an extremely fast race where braking is necessary.

Grand Prix

Similar in other Mario Kart titles, Grand Prix consists of 10 different cups, each with 4 races. By default, only the Star Cup, Special Cup, Leaf Cup and Lightning Cup are unlocked. You can unlock more by beating the starting unlocked cups. Beating a course in a cup gives you points. Whoever has the most points at the end of the cup wins. Point distribution is the same as Mario Kart 8.

Time Trials

Nothing has changed compared to Mario Kart 8.

Vs Race

Once again you can customize the number of laps! Also, Mirror and Reverse modes are toggled separately from CC class, meaning you can have 50CC Reverse, 200CC Mirror Reverse, etc.

Battle Mode

All minigames that were available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are available in Mario Kart 9.

Free Roam

Free Roam allows you to drive around a track by yourself to explore and learn the layouts of a track. Item Boxes only give Triple Mushrooms so you can take shortcuts that may require them.

Mission Mode

Mission Mode returns after only being seen previously in Mario Kart DS. There are 9 worlds, the last one being a secret world unlocked by getting at least one star on every mission in the worlds before it. Each world has 8 regular levels and a boss level.
