Mario & Luigi: World of Color is an action-adventure, turn-based role-playing game developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo. It will be released in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch. It is the sixth installment in the Mario & Luigi series, and is a crossover with the Splatoon series.

Professor E. Gadd has finished his newest invention, a machine that travels to different universes. A Toad and Greenie volunteer to test the machine. Meanwhile at Bowser's Castle, Kamek has recently learned a spell that opens portals to different universes. He reports this to Bowser, and also tells him about E. Gadd's machine. This gives Bowser an idea for his next plan to kidnapp Princess Peach.

Meanwhile, in the Splatoon universe, DJ Octavio is in his lair, and notices how small his army has become, due to many Octolings moving to Inkopolis. One of the remaining Octolings enters the room, and tells him about a machine that has been spotted outside the lair. DJ Octavio and the Octoling get to a balcony, and they see the machine, which is being inspected by other Octolings. A portal opens nearby Octavio and the Octoling, and Bowser and Kamek emerge from it. Bowser has a conversation with Octavio, and explains that he knows about Octavio's current situation, thanks to Kamek. Bowser offers a deal with Octavio to make his army bigger by teaming up with him, in exchange for helping him take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Octavio agrees, and Kamek casts many portals across Inkopolis and Octo Canyon, sending many Inklings, Octarians, Salmonids, Jellyfish, and other characters to the Mario universe.
