— The game's tagline

Mario & Luigi: Creative Calamity (Japanese: マリオ&ルイージRPG スティックマンを描く MIX; Rōmaji: Mario & Ruīji RPG Sutikku Man o Kaku Mikkusu; Hepburn: Mario & Luigi RPG Draw a Stickman MIX), abbreviated as M&LCC or MLCC, also known early in development as Mario & Luigi + Draw a Stickman, is an action-adventure RPG-platforming game for the Nintendo Switch 2 system. The game is the ninth installment in the Mario & Luigi series and is a crossover between said series and the Draw a Stickman series (which you've probably never heard of but is criminally underrated).

Plot[]

Up high in space where no one can see, there is an arena out in the multiverse known as the Matriverse, which keeps all universes in order. The Matriverse is guarded by the Seven Guardians of Obtinity. One day in the arena, a mysterious figure lures each Guardian into a trap, locking them up in a cage for all of eternity. The figure and their gang, who are also unidentified, split the Matrivese into pieces, plunging all worlds into chaos, two in particular to collide.

In the Mushroom Kingdom, it is the Mario Bros.' birthday today, and all the Kingdom is hosting the party at Princess Peach's Castle. Coincidentally, in Stickville, the home of Stickman, the guardian of the Stickverse, and his friends, are hosting Stickman's birthday party in the center of town. The recently drawn hero, the stickman that the player drew who will be referred to as "Hero", has also been invited the party. In both universes, the ground starts to crumble and the sky starts to get gloomy. A tear in the fabric of space and time itself opens up and combines both universes together, knocking everyone out. Once everyone wakes, Mario and Luigi realize that they are now paper.

Meanwhile in the Dark Lands with Bowser in his castle, he is sitting on his throne and orders a Hammer Bro to get him a drink. Unbeknownst to anyone, the gang of the mysterious figure is trying to get away on top of the roof of Bowser's castle, but one member (still unidentified) gets stuck between two patches, so the rest of the gang has to get them out. They succeed, but don't know that the member left behind a drop of Purple Ink, which oozes through the roof, into a glass full of non-alcoholic wine. The Hammer Bro returns to his king with the wine not knowing it has a drop of Ink in it. Bowser takes a sip if it, which at first says it is very good, possibly the best wine he's had in a long time, however (due to the effects of the Ink) Bowser turns purple and slimy, ultimately transforming him into Ink Bowser. Ink Bowser, who is now a mindless beast, destroys his castle and breathes Inky fire toward his entire kingdom, almost destroying all of it.

Mario, Luigi (who are now paper, NOT Paper Mario), and company meet the villagers of Stickville (including Stickman and Hero) who also have no clue on what happened. Stickman offers to help along with Hero, which Mario and Luigi accept (that is how you unlock Stickman and Hero). Rodmic, a small alien and a helper of the Seven Guardians of Obtinity, explains to the four about what had happened in the Matriverse, tells them they have to travel to the arena to defeat the mysterious figure and save the Guardians, and shows them through the tutorial, which explains how to perform Bros./Quartet Actions, how to attack, etc. After clearing the tutorial, Rodmic sends them off on their journey to the Matriverse. This is Rodmic's only role in the game and is not seen again until the celebration in the final cutscene.

The group starts in ShroomStick Mountains, where nothing important really happens. After the miniboss of the area, the group moves on to Wackyhoo Forest. They encounter a broke-down spherical robot, whom they quickly fix back up. The robot introduces himself as "1TS-AM3", but they can call him "Droitron." He explains how he was built by an extremely wealthy man for his daughter, who had always wanted one. They soon became best friends. But as she got older, he got less and less attention. He was tossed underneath her bed one day when she had friends over, where she didn't want to get embarrassed. Later, the father was cleaning her room when he found the deceased Droitron under her bed. He decided to throw him out into the woods, where he landed in Wackyhoo Forest.

Gameplay[]

Overworld[]

As in previous Mario & Luigi titles, Mario and Luigi move in unison, performing jumps and hammer moves together, with Mario being controlled with the A button, Luigi being controlled with the B button, Stickman being controlled with the X button, and Hero being controlled with the Y button. Their iconic Jump and Hammer mechanics are central to both exploration and puzzle-solving. Players switch between these abilities using button prompts, allowing Mario and Luigi to interact with the environment by either jumping over obstacles or smashing objects with their hammers. With their magic Pencils, Stickman and Hero offer a range of new abilities that enhance the brothers' interaction with the world. Stickman is the only one of the group that has any dialogue.

Stats

  • HP (Heart Points) is the amount of life that the team has. When an enemy hits any of them, they lose HP. When a member's HP reaches zero, they lose consciousness, but can be revived with a 1-Up Mushroom or 1-Up Super for the Bros and Heart pieces for the Sticks.
  • BP (abbreviation of Briend Points) indicates how many times Mario, Luigi, Stickman or Hero can use. They cover your Bros/Draw Attacks. Each attack uses a certain amount of BP, draining the total. BP can be restored by using a Syrup Jar, Golden Mushroom, or a 1-Up Super.
  • POW (abbreviation of Power) is how strong a team member is. The higher one's POW stat is, the more damage they will deal.
  • DEF (abbreviation of Defense) is how much damage a character’s can block from an enemy hit. The higher their DEF stats are, the less damage they will take.
  • SPEED is how fast the team members are, and it determines the turns. If any of the four heroes has a higher stat, they will attack first. If not, an enemy will attack before them.
  • STACHE/PIGMENT is basically the Luck stat. The higher their STACHE/PIGMENT stats are, the greater there is a chance of a Critical hit, which doubles POW.

Action Commands[]

Much like before, the battle system still acts like a turn-based role-playing game, where the bros. and enemies take turns attacking, and their Speed determines who attacks first. All Command Action commands give out six different ratings depending on how well the player executes the attacks. These ratings are:

  • OK
  • Good
  • Great
  • Excellent!
  • Amazing!!
  • Creatively Calamatic!!!!!

Trivia[]

•The character Droitron, the spherical robot with a propeller on his head's real name is "1TS-AM3." This is a pun on Mario's iconic catchphrase: "It's-a me, Mario!" because 1TS-AM3 = ITS-AME = It's-a me.

•This is one of the two projects that SupaDupaMarioFan2012 has worked on and is currently in work on in Fantendo, with the other being Super Mario Generations.
