Luigi has won a mansion in a contest he never entered. Planning to meet Mario there that evening, Luigi discovers that the mansion is a haunted illusion. King Boo has released the ghosts that Professor E. Gadd had contained within paintings, and has trapped Mario within a painting of his own. Luigi must use his flashlight and a modified vacuum cleaner, the Poltergust 3000, to stun, reel in, and capture ghosts as he explores the mansion.
