In LittleBigPlanet 4, players get to control a fully customizable Sackperson (often known as Sackboy or Sackgirl). This Sackperson is controlled with the left analog stick that lets them move left or right and between the 16 layers in 2D mode or freely around in 3D mode. Like previous games, players jump with the X (cross button) and can grab objects using the R1 Button.

Untitled-1 (48)

Throughout the game players pick up Costumes, Objects, Materials, Stickers, Decorations, and Tools which can be used in the game's Create Mode found on the player's own "Moon". Some of these items like stickers can be placed in the main levels or on the Sackperson.

Players navigate their way through the levels by jumping, pushing, grabbing, running, flying and more to overcome numerous puzzles. On top of this, levels can go further than just being platformers. Levels can be of the genre of racing, real-time strategy, RPG, FPS, and more.

2D & 3D[]

The main new feature to the series is the addition of a 3D mode along with 2D mode. 2D mode features the return of 16 layers from LittleBigPlanet 3 while 3D mode allows players to roam in a 3D environment akin to Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The 3D mode gives Sackboy a couple new moves. If the player double-taps the R3 button, they’ll throw out a punch. The punch can destroy weak enemies, hurt stronger enemies, briefly knock out other players, and can activate certain types of logic such as Buttons or Switches. If the player double-taps the R2 button, Sackboy will perform a dive. Dives can be helpful for crossing long gaps that wouldn’t be possible with a normal jump. They can also help the player fit into tight areas.

Popit Search[]

A small, but highly requested addition to the Popit. Players can now simply type in whatever they want in Customize Character, Stickers & Decorations, and more to get what they need. The feature greatly optimized the Popit with players no longer needing to scroll through countless pages of items.

Search in action.

Emotes[]

This is a new feature that’s added as a page to Customize Character in the Popit. It greatly extends the range of emotions that a Sackperson can express. By default, the player has a choice of four different emotions to show, each emotion triggered by pressing a directional button on the controller's D-pad; like in previous LittleBigPlanet games. Starting from the upward directional button and going clockwise, the emotions are as follows: happy, angry, sad, and nervous.

Any of these emotes can be replaced by new ones obtained during the Story Mode. For example, the happy emote can be replaced by the enamored emote. Sackboy’s eyes would become hearts and his face would blush. Another example would be the sad emote being replaced by a knee-slapper emote. Showing Sackboy laughing his butt off.

Multiplayer[]

Certain levels enable up to eight players at once instead of the usual four. These levels can be played online with up to eight players, locally with up to eight players, or with a mixture of up to eig

ht online and local players. Each local player will also be able to sign in to their own PlayStation Network account and individually collect trophies for their own account.

The Valiant Brace

After Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop returned home to Bunkum, Sackboy went on his merry way towards his next big adventure. He found a crashed ship where three foreigners came out and introduced themselves as the Valiant Brace.

They come from a distant part of the cosmos where their entire system of planets has been taken over by the galactic emperor named Galanxic. This came to be in the wake of the power vacuum left after the Negativitron’s defeat. They fled the emperor’s clutches after a mission against one of his interplanetary strongholds and now they find themselves stranded on Craftworld. One of Larry Da Vinci’s fellows, Andrew Salai, ran up to Sackboy and the Valiant Brace begging them to help end the revolution. The populace’s Sackbot army was losing against the tyrannical Ruffians; a group of large angry beetles. Andrew made a deal with Sackboy and the Valiant Brace. He’ll fix their ship if they help defeat the Ruffians. After a set of missions, Sackboy and the Valiant Brace came up to face the leader of the Ruffians who revealed that he had a bone to pick with Larry. Once he’s defeated, Andrew congratulates Sackboy and the Valiant Brace for helping end the war. Sackboy then tags along with the Valiant Brace on their interstellar journey and they set out for the cosmos.

Twiggy's Repository[]

Untitled-1 (58)

Twiggy’s Repository is a unique warehouse full of gadgets and trinkets created by Twiggy Chip. The area is set in a large forest that takes much inspiration from the nature art of French painter, Claude Monet. Twiggy’s Repository is set on the grander planet of Katerth.

While out in space in the ship, Mike got a transmission from Captain Batista that they’ve located a gadget that may be able to destroy the Summation; Galanxic’s most formidable stronghold. The gadget was located somewhere deep in the forests of Katerth. Sackboy and the Valiant Brace were given an approximate location on the planet’s surface. Once they touched down on Katerth, the group journeyed through vibrant forestlands and treacherous caves before reaching Twiggy’s Repository. The wise-cracking Twiggy Chip initially sent out a few of his machines to ward off the foreigners but had a change of heart upon fully recognizing Prince Triso. The Valiant Brace brought him up to speed on what was going on and Twiggy commented that he just finished his latest device. The Photonator. With the Power-Up, the user has greatly increased maneuverability and can shoot out photon blasts. The longer it’s charged, the more powerful the blast will be. Twiggy sent Sackboy in and around the Repository to get used to the device. Not long after, a trio of Galanxic Force ships arrived on location at the Repository and began utterly demolishing it. Sackboy, Twiggy, and the Valiant Brace escaped the wreckage, but Twiggy’s Repository was left in ruins. Even so, Twiggy laughed as he had a Plan B. He whistled which called out a set of smaller attack ships for himself and the Valiant Brace. They, along with a Photonator Sackboy, battled the ships and Galanxic’s henchmen. After they defeat Galanxic’s men, Triso becomes uber paranoid that more are coming. Irla slaps him back to sense before they leave for their next destination. Twiggy also comes along as he wants to “get even” with the man who wrecked his shop.

The International Fair of Brilliant Creators[]

Galanxic makes his first full appearance. Residing at the center of the Summation, he and his army just finished easily defeating and capturing a squadron of rebels. While his men rejoice in victory, Galanxic coughs quite a bit. He suffers from an ultra-rare terminal illness named Thesuarusitis & has been capturing and pillaging with the ultimate hope of finding a cure somewhere. No luck so far. Galanxic then gets a report that Group 142 was allegedly taken out by the Valiant Brace and one of the members of the Alliance that took down the Negativitron, Sackboy. While this visibly irks Galanxic at first, he becomes determined that he’ll get Sackboy on his side.

Galanxic the Emperor

Back on the Valiant Brace’s ship in the cosmos, Mike and Irla talked to Twiggy about how they will use the Photonator to destroy the Summation & speed up the end of Galanxic’s empire. While Twiggy didn’t hesitate to bask in the glory of his invention, he admitted that the Photonator on its own still wouldn’t be powerful enough. He would need a Hypercore upgrade for it to generate that kind of energy. Hypercores were expensive commodities and the nearest place to find them was Resvania. Once the team arrived at the planet, only Sackboy went ahead to get the Hypercore so everybody else could continue moving forward against Galanxic. Sackboy was given an experimental Pocket Wormhole so that he could teleport back to the ship when he got the Hypercore. On the planet, The International Fair of Brilliant Creators was being held and was hosted by Ron Lawn. In order to earn credit to purchase a Hypercore, Sackboy had the choice of helping whichever creators he wanted. The area is special in that it lacks a boss level and not all main levels need to be completed; reminiscent of LittleBigPlanet 3’s Hub Worlds. Once Sackboy helps at least five creators, he purchases a Hypercore. Before he leaves, Sackboy is thanked by Ron Lawn and all the creators he helped during the fair. Upon using the Pocket Wormhole, Sackboy finds it to malfunction. He instead teleports to some other completely abstract land.

Subspace Abstract[]

Untitled-1 (60)

Subspace Abstract depicts a world of surreal landscapes and dreamlike environments. It takes place on no particular planet, but rather mimics the regular cosmos in a distorted way. The area reflects the abstract work of Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint and Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky.

Sackboy floating in Abstract Space

A scared Sackboy is seen floating helplessly across the Subspace Abstract before being pulled down by an unknown force.

The Pocket Wormhole is out of commission. He then finds himself in the familiar world of Bunkum where he is greeted by Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop. All of it became distorted, however. As Sackboy journeyed through a bizarre variant of Bunkum Lagoon, the counterfeit Bunkum trio of heroes repeatedly made themselves out as obstacles. They were only stopped by the intervention of Marcelline Moon; the neurotic expert of the distorted world. She claims to have been stuck for years by herself and to not anger the Moonless One. Sackboy, however, ignores her requests and continues to search for a way out. Leading him to go on abnormal adventures through the Abstract. Each area more ghastly yet breathtaking than the last as Sackboy and Marcelline go deeper. The Moonless One becomes furious over Sackboy’s activity and confronts him in an extended battle. After Sackboy defeats it, he regains access to the Pocket Wormhole and invites Marcelline to escape with him.

Detention Center #12[]

Untitled-1 (61)

Detention Center #12 is the place that Sackboy and Marcelline Moon teleport to. It’s set in outer space in a futuristic prison housing empire rebels. The area loosely reflects the contemporary art of American illustrator, Ralph McQuarrie (who notably made concept art for Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial).

Sackboy and Marcelline find themselves back on the Valiant Brace’s spaceship, but they along with Twiggy are mysteriously absent. Sackboy and Marcelline soon find out that they were in an empire holding center. The ship was being reconfigured for empire use. The pair secretly exit the ship to go and find their buddies all the while keeping a low profile. They manage to find the Valiant Brace’s cell which was specially marked due to Prince Triso’s standing. However, Sackboy and Marcelline get found out and engage in an extended battle with detention center guards. Unfortunately, the heroes get overwhelmed once Headwarden Vardinon comes into the picture. Sackboy then wittingly threw his Pocket Wormhole as far as he could, causing it to malfunction. It created a small but powerful wormhole that began tearing apart the department center. With the Valiant Brace free, the six guys booked it for their ship. Once they made it there and flew off, it was smooth sailing for only a little while. Then, an empire armada led by Headwarden Vardinon demanded them to stop but the Valiant Brace found support in the Valiant Fighters led by Captain Batista; the main faction against Galanxic’s empire. With a few tag-alongs as well. A dogfight of cosmic proportions commenced with the Valiant Fighters later coming out as the victors.

Meanwhile, at an undisclosed location, Galanxic finds a brightly shining crystal that might be the answer to his hopes and dreams.

Frontierland[]

Untitled-1 (62)

Frontierland is set on the center Valiant Fighter planet, Progus Prime. The area is loosely based on the idealistic art of Japanese contemporary manga artist, Akira Toriyama. Frontierland is a capital city that’s ultramodern, militaristic, yet upbeat in nature. This is where the ultimate campaign against the empire is finalized and Sackboy gets training for it.

Sackboy and crew arrive in Frontierland where they are greeted by Captain Batista. They are all heralded for making it back to Frontierland in one piece while sinking a detention center. Batista wants to promote Sackboy to the rank of sergeant with the right amount of training. Marcelline was eyed too, but she declined out of wanting to return to a normal life. After her departure, all hands were on deck for the Valiant Fighters and their allies. Captain Batista ran Sackboy through a set of rigorous tests to see if he was sergeant material. Everything from mock-up star command missions to infiltration rundowns. Once Batista saw that Sackboy was a trooper, she officially inducted him into their ranks as sergeant. The final controls were then set for toppling the Summation and Galanxic himself.

The Summation[]

Untitled-1 (63)

The Summation is set in the outer reaches of the cosmos kind of like Detention Center #12. Unlike there, however, the Summation is far bigger in scope. The area is seen as a melting pot of worlds that Galanxic’s empire ruled over; a Frankenstein of sorts. The area doesn’t take inspiration from any particular artist.

Sackboy, The Valiant Brace, and a slew of Valiant Fighter friends & sackbots took flight on Giant Starship. Using cloak technology, the ship masqueraded as an ice cream ship as it approached the Summation. All empire ships went about their business until Giant Starship blasted a great hole into the Summation using the Hypercore Photonator. With this attack, the Summation was vulnerable and a massive warship came out to stop Giant Starship’s advancement. Sackboy, as well as many others, were deployed in their smaller spaceships to combat small enemy ships; and also soften up the warship. The Valiant Fighters win the battle but not without Giant Starship taking considerable damage. Nonetheless, Sackboy and a slew of other Valiant Fighters descended upon the Summation to infiltrate it; coming across a myriad of different landscapes, obstacles, and bosses. Things start to go awry, however, once Galanxic himself returns to the Summation. He proclaims that the restoration of the Craftverse was at hand. No more would it be ill-prepared for threats such as the Negativitron. However, Mike Baxworth shouts back at him that capturing people and their creations to “protect” them isn’t the right way to go about it. Angered by this, Galanxic calls upon his Elite squadron while also taking the fight to the rebels himself. But before the final battle begins, the cavalry comes as many more Valiant Fighter ships join the battle as well as a few familiar friends: The Alliance, Bunkum Heroes, and some creators from The International Fair of Brilliant Creators make a surprise appearance in Huge Spaceship to lend a hand.

After a hard-fought battle, Galanxic and his ranks are defeated… seemingly. Galanxic turns out to have one more ace up his sleeve. He taps into the full power of the mystic crystals he found and gains a surplus of power. Being able to rival the full power of the Valiant Fighters and then some. Sackboy takes it upon himself to receive the full powering reigns of the Hypercore Photonator in the REAL final battle.

Whimsical Scrapyard[]

Untitled-1 (64)

This is the last area of the game. It only features one level if you excuse the cutscenes, and it displays many creations that the community made. A contest was held on LittleBigPlanet 3 for players to submit their creations for a chance of having them be featured prominently in the next game’s story mode. ALL runner-ups and other participants that entered had a creation of theirs shown here in some capacity.

  • Sackthing’s Next Big Adventure - Cutscene

Galanxic opens a portal to another realm and goads Sackboy into joining him. Once there, Sackboy falls into what looks to be a landfill of lost creations. Before long, Galanxic uses these many forgotten gems to his advantage. Thus Sackboy engages in a long, final fight with the tyrannical emperor. The boss battle comes to a screeching halt, however, when an “Incinerator Imminent” sign flashes all across the landfill. As the forgotten creations made their untimely end by fire, Sackboy and Galanxic would also meet the same end if they didn’t book it out of there. The two enemies turned allies worked together to get to the wormhole. Galanxic loses his footing and backslides near the oncoming fire. Sackboy has the choice riskily saving him or leaving him there. The choice has to be made quickly and either way, the level will be completed.

If Galanxic is Saved: He’ll see the errors of his ways, repurpose his empire into being a true force for peace in the Craftverse, and be invited to Avalon’s Shindig with Sackboy & friends.

If Galanxic isn’t Saved: His empire will be thoroughly destroyed, the Valiant Fighters will step up as the peacemakers of the Craftverse, and Sackboy will be saddened by Galanxic’s passing but ultimately offered solace by his friends at Avalon’s Shindig.

Create[]

Create mode is where you are able to let your creative juices flow by using your tools to create objects and levels and then release them to the public to show off your clever creation skills. It is a mode accessed via the My Moon option in the Pod. In LittleBigPlanet 4, the Create mode is the most versatile yet in the series. It maintains the scope of LittleBigPlanet 3’s create mode with the huge addition of a 3D option.

In 3D mode, players can alter the terrain on an x, y, and z-axis. Terrain allows you to create lakes, ditches, and landforms in complex shapes, plus change the terrain material. A single 3D level can be as large as 30 square miles (around the same size as Red Dead Redemption 2’s play area).

Asset Builder[]

Asset Builder Popit Icon

Popit Icon.

This is a new feature of the Popit in Create mode. Here, players can build their own unique objects to use if none of the Materials or Story Objects are satisfactory. When going into the Asset Builder, players have the option of using the Simple Editor or the Advanced Editor. In the Simple Editor, players can use premade objects and make their desired changes from there. Or, players can take a picture of an object they’d like to recreate in the game. They can upload the picture of the object to the game and then the game will make a mockup of that object using similar technology to that of photogrammetry.

Galanxic Mockup

Render of Galanxic in Asset Builder.

In the Advanced Editor, players can make objects in an environment very similar to Blender. They’ll be able to make everything from scratch, making an extremely liberating yet firmly complex tool for players to use. With the Advanced Editor, players have also found that they can build objects to use for costumes. This would mark the first time in the LittleBigPlanet series where players can make their costumes akin to Story Characters without need for Stickers & Decorations

Animation Studio[]

Another main new feature of the Popit in Create mode. Players can make their own animations for Sackbots and Sackfolk alike to enact. Like the Asset Builder, there are two modes of use. Simple Studio & Advanced Studio. If players don’t feel like going through the painstaking process of animation, they can simply use ones already made by the game or by members of the community. Minor changes can be made to these animations, but anything more will prompt the player to switch to Advanced Studio.

Animation Studio Popit Icon

The new Animation Studio.

In Advanced Studio, players can go through the process of animating the characters frame-by-frame. They’ll have full control of the body: head, eyes, mouth, arms, etc.

Stories[]

LittleBigPlanet 4 introduces Story Craters to the Moon similar to LittleBigPlanet 3 introducing Adventure Craters. Story Craters replace Adventure Craters on the Moon as one of these craters can hold the carrying capacity of eight Adventure Craters. In other words, players can create up to eight worlds (same amount as the main story) filled with levels to tell their own original little big narrative. There are six Story Craters on a player’s Moon.

Share[]

When you’re finished creating a level on your Moon, you can share it to your Earth for other players to play, enjoy, and review. In the spirit of sharing, Sumo Digital further remodeled LBP.me to not only be a place where users can share levels but also converse with each other freely. Creators can create discussion topics on their pages to talk about their levels, outside things they’re working on, or life in general.

LBP Tokens[]

LBP Token

LittleBigTokens are a new addition to the sharing aspect of LittleBigPlanet. Players can earn tokens by playing other people’s levels, yaying or naying them, giving thoughtful reviews, and publishing your own levels.

In turn, LBP Tokens can be used to promote levels or stories across the LBP.me website and in the Community section of the game. The more tokens spent, the more promotion it gets. Even better if the level/story has a trailer to go along with it. Tokens are a way for players to ensure their grandest creations get the recognition they deserve; as well as incentivizing players to be active members of the LittleBigPlanet community.

Undiscovered Gems[]

Even creators that don’t have many tokens can still get their fair share of recognition. Besides The Level of the Day, the Undiscovered Gems page is the most prominently featured category of levels in Community. Levels that were uploaded within the past 3 days will show up here in complete random ordering. Every time you go there the ordering will change. This page is best for people looking for amazing levels swept under the rug, or truly wacky stuff.

Creator Challenges[]

Every new month, Sumo Digital will hold a challenge for creators to participate in for huge prizes. Challenges can be anywhere from creating specially-themed eye candy levels, to music videos, to whole adventures. Only one submission is allowed per user unless Sumo Digital says otherwise. Prizes typically consist of a huge bounty of LittleBigTokens, the Rare Crown, automatically having your level chosen as a Team Pick, and getting the “I Won A Creator Challenge” pin. Every challenge has a first-place, second-place, and third-place winner. First-place will receive all the prizes listed above while second & third will get some of them at Sumo Digital’s discretion.

Promotion[]

Sony announced LittleBigPlanet 4 with a single teaser screenshot of the tree on its website. LittleBigPlanet 4 was expected to be a bestseller, “one of the crowning achievements of the PS5,” according to Sony.

LittleBigPlanet 4 enjoyed the largest promotional campaign the series ever saw. The campaign included the short 3D-animated film, Sackboy vs. Sackgirl which debuted to over 10,000 movie theatres as well as YouTube. LittleBigPlanet 4 was advertised over a plethora of gaming websites, billboards, and ads across streaming services (Spotify, Hulu, etc). In a special offer, LittleBigPlanet 4 was bundled with a Sack-themed PS5.

Tame Impala & Sackboy

Sony also recognized that each LittleBigPlanet game could be linked back to a signature song. LittleBigPlanet 1 being Get It Together by The Go! Team. 2 being Sleepyhead by Passion Pit. And 3 being Rum Hee by Shugo Tokamaru. So for 4, Sony reached out to Tame Impala to write and perform a theme song for the game. The song he wrote and performed for the game was named, “Fine”.

While the campaign was costly, it did grow to be a successful endeavor. LittleBigPlanet 4 was the top-selling PS5 game in both the UK and the Americas for a month since its release. It debuted at #4 in Japan.

LittleBigPlanet 4 also received numerous awards such as Best Comeback, Best Action/Adventure, The Best Game Music of 2021, and was also nominated for Game of the Year.

  • VR Level Pack planned.

Sackboy vs. Sackgirl[]

On their way to Da Vinci's Hideout, Sackboy & Sackgirl enjoy each other's company on a bus full of sackfolk. Sackgirl then convinces Sackboy to make a detour and they both hop out of the window of the moving bus to everyone's shock. They both come out fine and run over to an open meadow land, laughing. The two decide to build castles in the meadow land. However, Sackgirl's castle encroaches on Sackboy's and ends up destroying his castle. Sackboy gets understandably upset and takes a large marker to draw out the border line for their castles.

Sackgirl builds on the border line which makes Sackboy accidentally destroy her castle. So she destroys his again, this time for revenge. Sackboy then builds a massive castle while Sackgirl does the same, drawing the attention of passersby. After finishing the castle, Sackboy flies out by Jetpack over to Sackgirl's castle. She comes out with a Sackbot army by her side. Sackboy hands her a peace treaty to sign and she signs. Her signing of the treaty was faithless, however, once a quartet of her Sackbots fired a cannonball at Sackboy's castle. Sackboy then looks back at Sackgirl and declares war on her.

Both of them retreat to their castles. The two then layout their battle plans to their respective Sackbot armies. After that, the battle commenced. The Sackbot armies clashed with each other. A giant attack robot then comes out of Sackgirl's castle being controlled by Sackgirl herself. She wipes out Sackboy's army and declares victory. The robot, however, gets shot in the chest by a tank and falls apart. Sackboy rolls into battle with a tank and a sly grin on his face. Sackgirl evades the robot's collapse by Jetpack. Then, a remote-controlled fighter jet comes to her aid and she takes flight. Sackboy ejected himself from the tank before Sackgirl destroyed it and he also took the skies by fighter jet.

The two then entered into a fierce dogfight; drawing the spectacle of dozens of sackfolk. Sackboy deploys a bomb over Sackgirl's castle which successfully destroys it. As he laughs, Sackgirl destroys his castle with a heat-seeking missile. Their jets soon crash into each other and explode but Sackboy & Sackgirl eject out moments before. Once they and their parachutes touch down on the ground, the two have one last standoff. Sackboy shoots out a beam of energy from his Photonator while Sackgirl shoots out a laser beam with her Creatinator. Their beam struggle then culminates in an explosion of nuclear proportions.

Sackboy and Sackgirl appear from the fallout all scratched up. The meadow land is scorched. The two of them looked at what they brought on the land and are woefully sorry. They hug each other and reconcile. They then went to work reviving the land around them while playing with each other.
