|First Appearance||Super Mario Kart (1992)|
|Shrinks all racers aside from those invincible and the user to a tiny size. Shrinks the Mega Mushroom drivers back to normal.|
The Lightning Bolt (also called Thunder Bolt, Lightning or Shock) is an item in the Mario Kart and Paper Mario series. It first appeared in Super Mario Kart as an item. When used, it shrinks all racers except the user, making them lose their items (starting from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!) and slowing them down. If the item is used on a Mega Mushroom driver, it will revert them to normal size. Mario Kart Wii introduced the POW Block into the Mario Kart series, which functions similarly to the Lightning, except that item can be avoided if the player is in the air.
Mario & Nintendo All-Stars Racing 2
The Thunderbolt appeared as an item in Mario & Nintendo All-Stars Racing 2. When it's used, it turns all the players in the front of the player that used the lightning tiny, and if a normal-size player crashes into a tiny player, the tiny player will be squashed and the player cannot move for a moment. Lasts for 10 seconds.
The Lightning Bolt (under the name of Lightning) makes an appearance in Mario Basketball: Mushroom Tourney. When used it shrinks all players on the other team for 10 seconds. If a normal player steps on a tiny player, they will get flattened for a second. It is a rare item.

Koopa Kart series
The Lightning appears in every game in the Koopa Kart series, serving the same role as in Mario Kart. In most games, it can be obtained in the bottom four positions, while in Koopa Kart Wii and Koopa Kart 8, it is obtainable in the bottom five positions. In Koopa Kart Wii, if a racer is under the effects of a Mega Mushroom when a Lightning strikes, that racer will return to normal instead of becoming small. That game also introduces the POW Block and Lightning Cloud, the former of which only affects racers on the ground and can be avoided if the player is airborne, while the latter gives the player a speed boost before shrinking them and can be passed to another racer by bumping into them.
