LEGO Breaking Bad is a multi-platform action-adventure game based on the LEGO brand of building blocks and the TV series of the same name, and its spinoff, Better Call Saul. The game was developed by Traveler's Tales, who also developed similar titles involving LEGO, with assistance from the production companies behind the original shows, and released in January of 2021 for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and Steam. Like other LEGO video games, LEGO Breaking Bad has many characters to play as and large areas to explore.

LEGO Breaking Bad is the first game based on LEGO that has been given a rating of Mature by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The game was given this rating due to depictions of violence and drug use which were required to allow for accuracy when adapting the source material.

Gameplay[]

LEGO Breaking Bad follows the same structure and gameplay style as the many LEGO-licensed games before it. The game is broken down into several story levels which follow the plot of the original TV show fairly accurately, with some creative liberty used to allow for more interesting gameplay sections. Each story level contains sections where the player will need to use their character's unique abilities to solve puzzles and move forward, or engage in combat with enemies. In addition to the main levels. players can explore a large hub area based on the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where there are many puzzles to solve and collectibles to find.

Upon completion of a level, players may replay the level in "Free Play" mode - This allows them to play as any character they have already unlocked, regardless of the level, whose abilities they can use to solve previously unsolvable puzzles to obtain various collectibles such as minikits, red bricks, deals, and the "True Kingpin" meter. Many of these collectibles can also be found in the overworld area, along with gold bricks and extra characters.

Completion Aspects[]

Like all other LEGO games, there are several collectibles that must be found to achieve 100% completion of the game. They are as follows:

Studs[]

While studs are infinite and are not required for completion, they are the game's main currency and are used to buy items required for completion.

Characters[]

There are many characters to unlock in the game, found through various methods. Once a character is unlocked they can be selected for use in Free Play levels as well as in the overworld after the story has been completed. Some are unlocked after completion of a story level which features characters the player has never used before, while others can be found from completing mini tasks or purchased in the overworld with studs after building 'character doors' which require a certain amount of gold bricks to build.

Vehicles[]

Similar to characters, there are many vehicles to unlock which can then be used in Free Play mode in vehicle levels or in the overworld after the story is completed, by using vehicle panels. Vehicles can be unlocked after completing vehicle levels in the story, or in the overworld by purchasing them for studs.

Gold Bricks[]

Gold bricks are the ultimate measure of completion within the game, as finding all 250 of them usually means a player has completed all other aspects of the game. Gold bricks can be earned through completing mini side-quests or finding them in the overworld, or earned by completing story levels, finding all 10 minikits in a level, finding a red brick, completing deals in levels, and more.

Red Bricks[]

Red bricks can be found and purchased in the overworld, with there being 20 in total to collect. Purchasing red bricks unlocks 'extras', which are features that can be enabled in the main menu which range from amusing visual effects to helpful aids such as stud multipliers or invincibility.

Minikits[]

Minikits are black barrels of which there are 10 in every story level, usually out of the way of the main path or locked behind puzzles only solvable by characters in Free Play mode. Finding all 10 in a level will unlock a small statue or diorama related to the level, such as the pink teddy bear in "ABQ", which can then be viewed in the overworld in the Schrader household.

Deals[]

Deals are a completion element in every story level, akin to the "citizen in peril" in other LEGO games. Usually found in an out-of-the-way area or locked behind a special character ability, upon approaching a specific NPC, the player can press 'B' (or 'O' on the PS4) to deal meth to the character, completing the requirement. This action can be achieved by every character with very few exceptions such as Hector Salamanca, who cannot move.
