King Dedede (SSS) SSB Kirby Series
King Dedede
Home Universe: Kirby
Canon Debut: Kirby's Dreamland 1, Game Boy, 1992
Home Stage: Fountain of Dreams
SSS Debut: August 28, 1973
Previous Character to Debut: Pooka
Next Character to Debut: Urban Champion
In a canon Smash game? yes
Canon Smash Debut: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

King Dedede is a playable character on Super Smash Stadium. He debuted very late in the show's first season, alongside Fountain of Dreams.

In his own universe

The alleged "king" of Kirby's universe. He's only proclaimed himself to be so and has yet to officially be named king by any sort of decree or election, and it's highly unlikely he'd win such an election, as he's quite incompetent and occasionally corrupt. Initially a full-fledged villain, he more or less degenerated into more of a Wario-type role after KDL1. His only true evil exploit includes stealing food from his subjects. His other evil doings in Kirby games were either done under mind control (Kirby's Dreamland 3) or by accident (Kirby's Adventure).

Despite this, in The World of Nintendo, he was in the same villains' club as Bowser (warlord, princess kidnapper, castle invader, reality warper), Giovanni (Mafia godfather and Pokémon racketeer), K. Rool (multiple counts of grand theft banana and kidnapping, attempted destruction of an island), and Gruntilda (kidnapper, illegal experimentation?). Dedede's softness in comparison was a running gag.

Attributes

A semi-clone of his rival, he's yet another one of the many "slow but powerful" characters in the show's roster. He makes up for it, however, with the fact that he has five jumps and a very good air game in general. Also, his side special may be the strongest projectile in the game.

If he should grab a Hammer or Golden Hammer, he'll swing his own mallet alongside the item, which seems to do extra damage but will do absolutely nothing should he get a headless Hammer or squeaky Golden Hammer.

Changes

  • Season 39: Nerfed hard due to universal game mechanic changes that killed his ability to do infinite chain grabs.

Moveset

Entrance: He's carried in on a board by several Waddle Dees. (Before Season 15: Entered on a Warp Star.)

Move Name Description
Neutral Special:

Inhale

See Kirby. However, Dedede is unable to copy anything, so pressing B Button again will spit the opponent back out, just like with A Button. To compensate, Dedede is able to inhale opposing projectiles and turn them back on opponents, much like Team Starfox's shines. He can also inhale his own projectiles in this way, powering them up.

Cannot kill in itself, but if the opponent hits other opponents, they can die at 70%.

Side Special:

Gordo Throw
Before Season 39: Waddle Dee Throw

Dedede throws a Gordo at opponents, which bounces three times before disappearing and can do severe damage as well as knockback.

With Waddle Dee Throw, Dedede only had a 9% chance to throw a Gordo; he also threw Waddle Dees (50% chance, which barely did anything) and Waddle Doos (40% chance, could electrocute opponents). The remaining 1% was a chance to pick up a pill, assuming container items were on.

Kills at 40%.
Waddle Dees and Waddle Doos couldn't kill.

Up Special:

Super Dedede Jump

Dedede goes ultra-high, then crashes back down quickly. Use Left Stick left and right to steer. He has Super Armor on the way up, but can't hit anyone. On the way down, anyone hit gets Meteor Smashed and possibly buried. When he lands, two stars radiate out from him and follow the ground for a short distance, doing minor damage to anyone close by. You can tap Left Stick up to cancel the move, but this will leave him helpless, and the move has more cooldown lag this way.

Kills at 100%.

Down Special:

Jet Hammer

Dedede charges up his mallet, then unleashes an ultra-powerful blast of blue fire. It reaches full charge in five seconds; hold it longer than that and you'll begin to hurt yourself at the rate of 1% a second. Unlike in the canon Smash games, there is no cap at when Dedede can stop taking recoil. The sweetspot for the move is the exact instant it hits full charge. Breaks shields instantly.

Kills at 40% sweetspotted, 55% if released afterward.

Final Smash:

Waddle Dee Army

AKA the "Big Gay Dance". Dedede summons a whole pride parade's of Waddle Dees, Waddle Doos, and Gordoes, and they go nuts all over the stage. The move is weak on its own; its power comes from overwhelming opponents via the sheer number of enemies spawned, and if they hit a Gordo, it's pretty much game over.

Ashley Variant: Surprisingly, none. Ashley does the same chant Dedede does rather than try to put her own spin on the attack.

Kills at 70%.

Taunts

  • Up Taunt: Raises his mallet in the air triumphantly.
  • Side Taunt: Spins his mallet and laughs.
  • Down Taunt: Goes "koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-koo!" as he spins around.

Victory

  • Pose: Pounds his mallet twice.
  • Theme: Team Kirby's victory theme.
  • "No Contest"/Loss Theme: Team Kirby's loss theme.

Costumes

  • Pink
  • Green
