Inferno is a adventure RPG for the Nymbus and Nintendo Switch, released on March 25th 2021. The game was first revealed at the Spooky Scary Fantendo Showcase 2020 in October, although more details of the game didn't surface until January of the following year.
The story follows Clove, a girl who has recently found herself trapped within a central district of the Underworld inhabited by Imstrels called Scorch Valley, after dying in a tragic accident. Being an obedient and hardworking schoolgirl before her death, Clove cannot understand why she has ended up in Scorch Valley, a dystopia where the cruellest and most evil souls are sent to live out their afterlives. She teams up with Remul the Djinn, as well as her other new friends, Hugo and Venus, to gather 7 Keys and open the Heavenly Gateway, where she hopes to spend a peaceful afterlife in Paradise. However, her attempts to escape Scorch Valley attract the attention of Lord Azazel, the current ruler of Hell, who believes that no one is allowed to leave.
At the Fan15 Showcase, an expansion pass for Inferno tited Inferno: Pluto's Curse was announced, scheduled for a Summer 2022 release.
Contents
Blurb
After recently waking up in the Underworld, a young girl named Clove teams up with a group of wrongfully judged souls in order gather keys to escape the hellish landscape of Scorch Valley and its tyrannical rule to reach the peaceful and pure realm of Paradise.
Gameplay
Exploration
Exploration of the overworld in Inferno takes place on an isometric grid-based map with the player able to move in 8 directions; either left, right, up, down or diagonally. The player takes control of Clove in the overworld, and as the story progresses, additional party members that are recruited will follow one tile behind her.
While in the overworld, the player is able to interact with a variety of objects, including NPCs that will provide dialogue to hand out items, treasure chests which contain valuable loot, and enemies. All enemies will appear on the overworld map and engage in battle by running into the same tile Clove or a fellow party member is stood. While some enemies will target Clove's party to engage in battle, others simply wander around the map minding their own business, and a rare few will attempt to get away from her.
Combat
Combat in Inferno follows a turn-based system which is activated when running into an enemy on the map. Multiple enemies of different variants may appear on the opposing side, but this selection will always include the specific enemy encountered on the map.
Combat operates on several in-game stats:
Hit Points (HP) Determines the amount of damage a player or foe can take before dying. When a party member runs out of HP and is killed, they will be unable to fight for the rest of the battle and cannot participate in any future battles unless taken back to the Fountain of Resurrection at the entrance of each dungeon. The exception to this is Clove - if Clove is killed in battle, there will be an immediate game over and the player will be transported back to the entrance of the dungeon with their party fully restored and 10%-50% of their gold lost. As such, it is vital to keep Clove alive over any other party member. |
Attack Power Determines the amount of damage a player or foe is able to deal with a basic attack. This can value is influenced by factors such as Defense and Power Boosts on either side of the field. This value does not affect special attacks, as those all have their own attack values. |
Defense Determines the damage reduction from opposing attacks on the user's side. A greater defense stat means the party member or enemy will take less damage from opposing attacks. |
Agility Determines the order of action in battle. The side that attacks first is determined by the side with the highest average Agility (which becomes a 50/50 random chance in the event of a tie). From there, the fighters on that side will attack in order of descending Agility, with the slowest fighter on each side moving after all other members of their team. |
The stat values listed on the party member and bestiary tables below are the base values, meaning they will scale based on the character's level. The player's level is determined by the amount of experience they have gained throughout their journey - levelling up grant minor numerial boosts to all stats, while also allowing the player to pick and choose extra boosts for stats of their choosing. Enemy levels are static and are determined based on the area's common enemy level value.
During a turn of battle, everyone on the battlefield is able to perform one action, including all of the player's party members and all foes. Each turn, the player has various options for what they can do:
After defeating an enemy, the player is rewarded with Gold and experience points. Tougher, high-level enemies will yield higher quantities of gold and experience, allowing the player to grind if they so wish. Certain enemies also have a small chance to drop helpful items such as Spell Books and Potions.
Game Modes
Inferno can be played through with a variety of game modes, which vary gameplay in differing ways. All of them keep to the same story and fundemental mechanics, such as the battle system and overworld exploration, but add extra challenges for repeat playthroughs and challenge runs.
The player can have up to 4 save files of Inferno at any one time. Upon creating a new save file, the player is asked which Difficulty they would like to play on, and whether they would like to play with any added game options. If all save files are used up and the player wishes to start a new one, they must delete an existing save.
Difficulty Modes
When beginning a new save file, the player will be able to choose between one of the following save files. All of these, with the exception of Ultra Hardcore, are available for the player's first playthrough of the game.
Casual An easier, more beginner-friendly Inferno experience designed for players to have fun with exploring the game rather than becoming stuck at difficult boss battles. In this mode, enemies and bosses have 25% reduced HP, Power and Defense and the player's party members gain experience points at a 25% boosted rate. Instead of getting a game over if Clove dies, the battle restarts and the player can attempt it again. |
Standard The base game mode. All enemies and bosses have their standard HP, Power and Defense values, and the player's party members gain experience points at the standard rate. If the player gets a game over as a result of Clove dying, they will be forced to restart from the beginning of the current dungeon. |
Challenge A more difficult version of the game for those familiar with turn-based RPGs. Enemies and bosses have 50% increased HP and Power and many have new attacking options not seen in the base game mode. Furthermore, certain items in shops are more expensive and treasure chest loot may be lower in value. |
Hardcore The hardest possible version of the game (or so they say...) Enemies and bosses have doubled HP and Power, and their defense is boosted by 50%. Additionally, they have their Challenge Mode attacks. Treasure chests are much rarer, many of them replaced with Mimiks, and shop prices are a lot higher. If the player gets a Game Over, they are forced to restart from the beginning. |
Ultra Hardcore A secret game mode, only unlocked when the player completes a Hardcore run for the first time. It is the most gruelling game mode, where no party members other than Clove are available to the player - if she dies, the player has to restart from the beginning. All shops are closed, forcing the player to rely on scarce treasure for items. All enemies have doubled damage, HP and defense. |
Extra Modes
These game modes are only available to the player after completing a standard playthrough of the game. They add extra effects to a playthrough, typically increasing their difficulty and making them more replayable. The player is able to mix and match these modes by having multiple active at the same time.
No Cutscenes In this game mode, all story-based, non-skippable dialogue and cutscenes are removed entirely, allowing for a more streamlined experience when replaying the game. |
Enemy Randomizer As the name suggests, this mode offers a unique experience by randomizing enemies across the world, meaning the player may face powerful foes such as Succubi and Mimiks in the early-game. Bosses are not randomized. |
Item Randomizer In this game mode, all items available from shops, treasure chests and enemy drops are globally randomized. In addition, the amount of Gold dropped by enemies is randomized. |
Permadeath This game mode introduces a unique twist, where party members that are killed in battle can never be resurrected, forcing players to strategise to ensure the survival of their party. If the player gets a Game Over, they are forced to restart their run from the beginning. This game option is unlocked after completing the game for the first time. |
Story
- The full story with dialogue can be viewed here: Inferno/Story
The story begins with Clove, a dark grey Imstrel, falling from the dark, stormy sky above Hell City in Scorch Valley. She is confused by her whereabouts and terrified by her surroundings. A green Imstrel wearing a flowery shirt approaches her, claiming to be her father, Corinthe. Clove doesn't believe him at first, believing she is having a nightmare, until realizing that he is telling the truth. Distressed, she runs away, only to be promptly followed by a squadron of Hellhounds making up the Underworld Defense Force. Leading the group is Lokjor, an anthropomorphic hellhound wielding two tridents. Realizing that she has recently arrived in Scorch Valley, Lokjor offers to take Clove back to her father, but after she tries to escape, pursues her. While escaping, she trips over on a key, and a blue, ghostly spirit emerges from it. The spirit introduces himself as Remul, and after teaming up with Clove, helps to scare off Lokjor, who pledges revenge. With the threat subsided, the two deduce that, both being good people, neither should have been sent to the Underworld. Remul suggests a way to escape, by gathering the 7 Holy Keys to open the Heavenly Gateway. Remul reveals that he is already bound to one of the keys as punishment for trying to escape, but by travelling to the Infernal Forge in the Infernal Mines, they can separate Remul's soul from the key and begin searching for the other Holy Keys. Clove agrees to the plan.
Characters
Party Members
Party Members are the characters that the player controls throughout their adventure. In the overworld, the player controls Clove and the rest of the party follows behind, however in battle, the player can control and command all four characters independently - once they are unlocked, of course. All characters have access to four attacks - their basic attack, as well as three default Spells which are listed below. More Spells can be taught in battle using Spell Tomes, but like all Spells, they cost Inferno Points to use.
All party members have an Inferno Point stat of 100, meaning they can have at any one time, a maximum of 100 Inferno Points. These are used to cast spells, and once consumed, will slowly be recovered at a variable rate of 5-10 points per turn.
Clove | A 16-year old girl who was recently killed in an accident, Clove recently arrived in Scorch Valley to begin her afterlife. Her goal is to escape the Underworld and return to her previous life, though to do this, she needs the help of Remul the mystical djinn to locate the 7 Holy Keys needed to open the Heavenly Gateway - a portal between realms. All the while, she is being hunted down by Hell City's authorities due to Lord Azazel's command. While Clove is mostly shy and anxious, she cares deeply about the people in her life that she loves. When the time calls for it, she is able to pluck up the courage to protect them despite her fears that she will fail. Clove is the leading party member of the group and the only one that is always available to the player. For this reason, if Clove is killed in battle, the player will automatically game over and be forced to restart from the start of the current dungeon. In battle, Clove is an attack-oriented character whose default spells are Blaze, Darkness and Drain. | ||||||||||||||||||||

Remul | Remul, full name Remulus Mardanshaw, Earl of Euxoslen, is a spirit who was trapped in the Underworld hundreds of years ago. Like Clove, was wrongly sent to the Underworld after his death and plans to escape to the Living World once more. He has attempted to escape in the past before many times, but has always failed, and as punishment, has had is soul trapped inside a key by Lord Azazel. Remul possesses a vast wisdom about the Underworld, making him a useful ally to Clove after she accidentally awoke him from his slumber. Together, they are working to free Remul from the key his soul is bound to, and ultimately escape to the Living World. Generally, he prefers to settle situations with charm and rhetoric, but doesn’t hesitate to resort to combat if his adversaries are being unreasonable. Remul is considered the strongest party member in the game thanks to his high bulk and decent attack power, though he's let down a bit by his low agility. He functions best as defensive support, offering strong attacks when his teammates need him. | ||||||||||||||||||||

|
Hugo | Hugo is an Imstrel who has resided in the Underworld for many years – a fate that has taken a toll on his health. He has developed an illness that has weakened his abilities and made him easy pickings for bullies and thieves, particularly the Imstrel Adventure Squad. Hugo joins Clove and Remul’s quest to escape to the Living Realm as they are the first real friends he has ever had, and he hopes that travelling to the Living World will improve his health and let him live out a happier life. What Hugo lacks in strength he makes up for with kindness and helpfulness. He’s loyal and despite being aware of his illness, isn’t afraid to stand up for his friends even if it means he will get hurt. Hugo is a fairly weak party member when it comes to attack power and defense, but he functions well as fast support with easy access to helpful spells, making him a valuable team member. | ||||||||||||||||||||

|
Venus | Venus is an aspiring musical theater star who dreams of performing live on stage. Unfortunately for her, there are no theaters in the Underworld. Unlike most denizens of Scorch Valley, Venus was actually born there and has lived there her whole life. Her mother, Vilaine, is a travelling merchant who works at Char Bazaar, which leads her to meeting Clove and her party. Inspired by Clove's goal to travel to the Living World once more, Venus decides to tag along in the hopes that she too can travel to the Living World and live out her musical theater dreams. During the journey, Venus and Clove start to develop feelings for each other and eventually become a couple. In battle, Venus functions best as a cleric thanks to her well-rounded stats and early access to the Health spell, though she also has several attacking options that she can use when necessary. | ||||||||||||||||||||

Non-Playable
These characters exist within the game but cannot be recruited into the party during the story. They merely act to provide guidance or act as rivals to Clove.
- Red text indicates that the character is present in the base game of Inferno.
- Blue text indicates that the character is only present in the Inferno: Pluto's Curse expansion.
Corinthe | Corinthe is Clove's father, who died ten years ago under mysterious circumstances when Clove was only 6 years old. Following his death, his wife - Clove's mother - was left a widow, and Clove was left without a father, something she found difficult growing up. Since his death, he's lived in an apartment in Hell City, spending his days collecting T-shirts and brewing coffee. He is a soft and caring fatherly figure to Clove, and although he supports her plan to escape Scorch Valley through the Heavenly Gateway, he secretly wishes that Clove would stay with him so that he can spend time with her that he missed out on due to his unexpected death. Corinthe is first encountered during the Prologue when Clove initially arrives in the Underworld, and his attempts to comfort his daughter are unsuccessful. He is not encountered until the interlude between Chapter 6 and 7, during which he has a heart-to-heart with his daughter regarding her plans to leave Scorch Valley forever and return to the Living World. | |
---|---|---|
Vilaine | Vilaine is a travelling merchant from a distant land, who makes her living by trading and exchanging wares from all over the Underworld. Once the player completes Chapter 1, they can visit her market, Char Bazaar, and freely buy and sell goods there. Vilaine has a questionable reputation due to her suspiciously low prices, and a few people claim to have been scammed by her in the past despite her passion for collecting and selling treasures. As revealed in Chapter 3, she is the mother of an eccentric daughter named Venus, who occasionally helps with her business. She is in ownership of one of the Holy Keys, but having researched them in the past, knows it is a very valuable relic. Refusing to sell it to Clove, Remul and Hugo, she instead proposes a trade, allowing them to have the key for free if they find a treasure of equal value in the Sunken Shipyard. After Clove's group find treasure and trade it for the Holy Key, Vilaine allows her daughter to travel with them in their quest to escape Scorch Valley. | |
---|---|---|
Lord Azazel | Lord Azazel is the current ruler of the Underworld who watches over Scorch Valley while using the Underworld Defense Force to enforce his brutal regime. He is the main antagonist of Inferno. His main rule is that no one is allowed to leave the Underworld, as it was created as a realm where dark magic and evil spirits are sent to live in isolation from the rest of the universe. Those that go against this commandment are met with extreme punishments. Some individuals, such as Remul, had their souls trapped inside inanimate objects such as keys, whereas unfortunate souls that Azazel was less lenient towards have been fed to his pet dragon, Vahala. Azazel resides in his tower, a skyscraper at the centre of Hell City and the tallest building in the Underworld, where he can see the farthest corners of Scorch Valley. Lord Azazel is fought twice in Inferno. First during Chapter 1 (though as a phantasmal clone) and again during Chapter 7, the latter of which is the first time he encounters Clove and her allies in person. | |
---|---|---|
Lokjor | Lokjor is a high-ranking Hellhound, initially the runt of a litter who became strong enough to join the Underworld Defense Force. Since his time joining the force, Lokjor became involved in the capture of 999 individuals, an achievement that was acknowledged by Lord Azazel. As a reward, he was promoted to head commander of the Underworld Defense Force, essentially making him Lord Azazel's right-hand man, or so he claims. Due to the trust placed in him by Azazel, Lokjor takes his job extremely seriously. He is first encountered in the Prologue, witnessing Clove attempting to escape Scorch Valley. He intervenes, intent on capturing her, but is stopped by Remul. After this encounter, Lord Azazel makes it his priority to ensure that Clove and her friends do not escape the Underworld, going to extreme measures such as stalking them and enlisting the personal help of the Elite Imstrel Squadron to do so and make sure his reputation is not ruined. He is encountered frequently throughout the story, becoming more unhinged as his repeated attempts at capture Clove fail. | |
---|---|---|
Diablo | The arrogant and hot-headed leader of the Elite Imstrel Squadron - a trio of Imstrels serving Lord Azazel through the Underworld Defense Force. In his previous life, Diablo was a teenage serial killer, his life cut short when he was shot dead by police after a 17-hour standoff. Upon arriving in the Underworld, Diablo became a loyal supporter of Lord Azazel, being promised riches and power in return for enforcing the Lord's regime upon the newcomers in Hell. His aggressive temperament leads him to bullying others, most commonly Hugo, but also occassionally Clove and even the other members of his squadron. Like the other members of the Squadron, Diablo is first encountered in Chapter 2 where he and the others are seen bullying Hugo. He is encountered again in Chapter 4 and Chapter 6, the latter of which he is fought for the first time in, and again in Chapter 7 during the plot's climax. | |
---|---|---|
Sizzlica | Sizzlica is the newest member of the Elite Imstrel Squadron, having only recently arrived in Scorch Valley. In her previous life, Sizzlica had a reputation for being a promiscuous and manipulative young woman, having slept with many partners - it was only recently that she ended up in Scorch Valley after being murdered by an ex-boyfriend, who discovered her cheating tendencies. She was recruited by the Elite Imstrel Squadron shortly after her arriving in the Underworld and swearing loyalty to Lord Azazel. Immediately after joining the group, she developed an obsessive crush on Diablo, which drives her to succeed in hopes of impressing him and gaining his affection in return. She is first encountered in Chapter 2 with the rest of her squadron, and is fought for the first time in Chapter 4. She appears again in Chapters 6 and 7 alongside Diablo and Grutus during the climax of the plot. | |
---|---|---|
Grutus | Grutus is Diablo's top lackey - first member to join the Elite Imstrel Squadron after it was founded by Diablo, Grutus enthusiastically swore loyalty to Lord Azazel with the promise of money and food as a reward. Grutus is a gluttonous individual who is a rather dim-witted compared to his fellow squadron members, though he is still very loyal to his allies and will defend their honour at the first chance he gets. In his previous life, Grutus was a gluttonous teenager who resorted to stealing to fulfil his greed - eventually, he was killed by his extreme eating habits. Grutus is first introduced with the rest of the Elite Imstrel Squadron in Chapter 2, where he and his teammates are seen bullying Hugo. When Clove and Remul step in to protect Hugo, Grutus is the first to try and stop them by engaging in battle. Though he is defeated, he and the group escape. He is encountered again with the squadron in Chapters 4, 6 and 7 as the story unfolds further. | |
---|---|---|
Phoebe | Phoebe is a mage who has trained and researched magic in the underworld for many years, supposedly being one of the most knowledgeable about magic in all of Scorch Valley apart from Lord Azazel himself. Having learned complex and powerful magic from relics such as books and artefacts left behind by Scorch Valley's ancient people, Phoebe is also very knowledgeable about Scorch Valley's history and knows a thing or two about the Heavenly Gateway and Holy Keys - information that is sure to be of use to Clove and her team. Only problem is - she's wanted by the Underworld Defense Force and is on the run, since her vast knowledge of magic and Scorch Valley's history is seen as dangerous by Lord Azazel. After being found roaming the Withered Badlands in Chapter 4, Phoebe will offer a service to Clove and her allies, enchanting books that they find and transforming them into Spell Tomes in exchange for ingredients that she happens to need. | |
---|---|---|
Pluto | Pluto was a servant to the ruler of Scorch Valley who lived 300 years ago. Pluto was among the Underworld Defense Force's most trusted and noble knights, appointed to protect the ruler and the land of Scorch Valley at all costs. One day, after Scorch Valley's ruler was betrayed, killed and usurped by Blight, a power-hungry soul with a desire to escape to the Living Realm and reign there with chaos, Pluto stepped up to attempt to stop Blight, engaging in a long and brutal duel and eventually scattering fragments of Blight's soul across the land. However, in this battle, Blight inflicted Pluto with a fatal curse, which several months after the duel, killed him. He now rests as a spirit in his castle on Pluto's Island, a isle off the south coast of Scorch Valley that was presented to him as an award for his valiant effort against Blight. Recently, a new evil has appeared on Pluto's Island, disturbing the soul of the late hero. | |
---|---|---|
Jack | Jack O'Lantern, also known as Experiment Jack, is a wandering trader found on Pluto's Island. According to the groundskeepers of Pluto's Island, Jack appeared there one day, seemingly out of nowhere. They seem to be suffering from a case of amnesia, unsure of how they ended up in the Underworld and not remembering anything about their past, but one thing's for sure, they love pulling tricks and playing mischief. To survive in the hostile new environment that is the Underworld, Jack has taken to selling items they've found, which can be purchased by the player at half their usual price. But this comes with a catch - half of all items Jack sells are actually forgeries that won't work as intended, meaning their reputation as a salesperson is questionable at best. If you're looking for cheap stuff, Jack O'Wares are your best bet, but stick to Char Bazaar for reliability. | |

Bestiary
Throughout all of Scorch Valley, Clove and her teammates will encounter enemies in every corner of the land. Upon interacting with an enemy in the overworld, a battle will commence, in which Clove's allies will fight against one or more enemies in a turn-based fashion. The first team to move is decided by the team with the highest average speed.
Defeating enemies and bosses grants the player's party members with experience points, Gold, and in most cases, dropped items. Dropped items are not dropped by all enemies, but most have either a guaranteed drop, uncommon drop (approximately 25-50% chance to drop) or a rare drop (10% chance to drop). Stronger enemies later in the game yield more experience and more Gold.
Enemies in Inferno have several different behaviour types which dictate how they will choose to act in battle. The different behaviour types are:
Harmful Harmful enemies will regularly attack Clove and her allies, using a variety of different attacks to deal damage. They may also occassionally use support items to support themselves or their allies in battle, and may flee if Clove's party are of a significantly higher level, or if they are very close to being defeated. This is the game's default behaviour type and the most common one among enemies. |
Aggressive Aggressive enemies will attempt to deal as much damage as possible every turn. They will never flee from battle or assist other enemies, and will always try to use the strongest possible attack. Often they will attempt to pick off the weakest members of Clove's party. |
Cowardly Cowardly enemies often don't want to fight and will use any means possible to avoid doing so. This includes fleeing from battle, or hiding behind other enemies causing them to take the blow from an attack instead. Occasionally they will attack, but usually only around the start of the battle, or if Clove's team are of a significantly lower level. |
Crafty Crafty enemies enjoy fighting and will attempt to use dirty tactics to win the fight. Several of their strategies include stealing items from the player to catch them off guard, providing items to their teammates and infrequently dodging attacks. They will attempt to attack almost every turn, and if they manage to steal an item, they will then attempt to flee whenever possible. |
Passive Passive enemies will very rarely directly attack the player; instead they provide support to other enemies in the battle. Methods used to achieve this include healing other enemies, providing an attack or defense boost aura, or taking hits on behalf of weaker foes. They are often very bulky but are a rare type of foe. |
Enemies
01 | Skulker | One of the most common types of foe in the Underworld, Skulkers are the rotting remnants of Imstrels that have lived in Scorch Valley for many years, and are nearly out of time. Skulkers commonly attack in groups and although they're not very strong, a bite from one can have lasting effects such as nausea and hallucinations if not treated quickly enough. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
02 | Driplet | Driplets are enemies that appear frequently in damp, enclosed spaces such as tunnels, caves and abandoned buildings. They will form the ceiling, gathering moisture and harmful chemicals from the air, before dropping down on their victims. Their bodies are made of an extremely harmful digestive acid that can melt any organic substance it touches. Be sure not to make direct contact with one, or you may find your defenses crippled! | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
03 | Spookey | Spookey are unfortunate souls that weren't lucky enough to be given a physical Imstrel form upon entering the Underworld, and are forever stuck as measly translucent wisps unable to interact with most objects - with the exception of their keys, which their souls are eternally bound too. They will reluctantly attack by swinging around their keys, but may retreat if the battle doesn't look to be in their favor. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
04 | Hellpup | Hellpups are the infant versions of Hellhounds. Without razor sharp claws and fangs, they aren't nearly as formidable as their mature counterparts, but they can still be pretty troublesome to deal with. Due to being so energetic and playful, they need to rest a lot, and so every other turn, instead of attacking, they will take a nap to restore 1/2 of their maximum hit points. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
05 | Vramp | Inhabiting dark and dank areas in Scorch Valley, Vramp often attack in large swarms. They've mischievous creatures that will attempt to swoop down and eat your gold - watch out, as once these pesky flying pests have stolen your gold, they'll gobble it up, and you'll lose it for good! Try to damage them as quickly as possible and avoid their attacks wherever possible! | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
06 | Coalite | Residing within the mines and caves of Scorch Valley, Coalites are scrapped prototypes made by Lord Azazel's inventors while attempting to create a guardian worthy of protecting the Infernal Forge. Their bodies are exceedingly hot, meaning you'll take damage if you make direct contact with one. To wear down their fairly low HP supply, try using Special Attacks instead. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
07 | Stone Gnome | Stone Gnomes are pesky creatures that will defend their territory at all costs - this means attacking Clove and her allies by throwing rocks at her in battle. Stone Gnomes tend to exclusively fight in family-sized groups of their own kind. Some of them will even attempt to use their prized trowels at weapons, throwing them like javelins. Thankfully, they're not the most intelligent creatures are may use ineffective attacks frequently. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
08 | Caliba | These sharp opponents are the swords of ancient knights whose souls were destroyed upon the entrance to the Underworld, and thus began to live a solitary life in the mountains of Scorch Valley. Despite having very high attack power, they will often not directly attack the heroes - instead they will offer themselves to other enemies, boosting their attack and defense in turn. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
09 | Lava Larva | Grubs that inhabit Scorch Valley, Lava Larva are very aggressive and territorial, biting anything that comes near them with their white-hot fangs, but they are fortunately very weak. Make sure to dispose of them quickly, as if they survive long enough, they'll turn into a cocoon and eventually become a Flaming Moth. Typically, they appear in large groups and can ambush the player's party if they wander too close to one of their hidden nests in the overworld. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
10 | Flaming Moth | The Flaming Moth is the adult version of the Lava Larva. Very few Lava Larvae manage to reach this stage of their life, but the ones that do become incredibly strong and efficient killers. They attack with bursts of infernal flame from their blazing wings, a unique attack that can hit multiple party members at once. Thankfully, their weakness lies in their vulnerability to the Extinguish tome, as all of their attacks are fire-based. They rarely appear in the overworld, mainly being found in groups of Lava Larvae or metamorphizing from one. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
11 | Metot | Metots are believed to be ancient reanimated totem poles constructed by the first inhabitants of Scorch Valley. In battle, they will simply stand still and won't attack Clove or her allies. However, when other enemies are weak, Metots will call for other enemies to join the battle and take the place of their fallen comrades. It's best to take out Metots as early as possible in a battle. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
12 | Bombardier | Bombardiers are unusual insectoid specimens that rarely appear in enclosed, dark spaces such as caves and tunnels. They have only one method of attack, which involves them running up to one of the player's party members and exploding in a powerful kamikaze-style attack. They're best dealt with using defensive spells or running away, as they will attempt to explode and the first chance they get. If you're fast enough to defeat one, you might be able to collect some Bomba Powder. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|

13 | Crewmate | Crewmates are the lowest rank of pirate, forced into laborious and treacherous tasks by their superiors. They form gangs in coastal areas such as Spitfire Shore with the objective of stealing valuable goods from passersby, not hesitating to kill those who refuse to hand over their goods. They attack with cutlasses and are often encountered in large groups with Marauders and Shantyfolk. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
14 | Marauder | Marauders hold a high-ranking position in Imstrel pirate gangs, as their body armour and cutlasses enable them to carry out raids and attacks on passerby ships with the hope of stealing their targets' Gold and other possessions. In battle, Marauders can steal Gold and other items from the player's party members, though these will be returned if the Marauder that stole them is defeated. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
15 | Shantyfolk | High-ranking members in Imstrel pirate gangs, who use their talent for playing the accordion to their advantage in battle. By performing certain songs, Shantyfolk can grant a variety of effects to the battle, such as lowering the player's party members' stats, boosting the stats of their allies, or restoring the health of themselves or their allies. In short, they can be difficult to deal with so prioritise taking them out before other enemies. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
16 | Mud Skulker | A stronger variant of the Skulker. These undead abominations can be found in mud banks and sandy shores, lurking in the earth below before waiting to attack. They are quite weak on their own but can appear in large groups by calling for allies mid-battle. A bite from a Skulker is said to be a death sentence as they often carry a multitude of viruses and diseases. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
17 | Squisp | Squisps are a species of bioluminescent phantasmal squid ghosts that inhabit the dark and treacherous waters surrounding Scorch Valley. They are carnivorous creatures that aggressively latch upon weak prey, attempting to tear them to pieces using their barbed tentacles. In battle they can latch onto party members to deal continuous damage, but thankfully their defenses are low and disposing of them isn't too much trouble. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
20 | Hellhound | Hellhounds are the guard dogs of the Underworld - territorial, viscous and yet loyal to their master, Lord Azazel. These morbid mongrels roam the streets of the Scorch Valley, attacking anyone who attempts to defy the Underworld's laws, including trying to escape. In battle they call for more allies when badly injured. It's best to take them out as quickly as possible, before you're up against the whole pack. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
33 | Magma Driplet | A stronger version of the Driplet, Magma Driplets are evolved specimens who have adapted to survive in extremely hot places, namely the burning dungeons deep below Scorch Valley. Like their weaker counterparts, they attack by leaping down from above. Their molten bodies are hotter than lava, causing anything flammable they touch to immediately burst into flames - this includes the player's party members, who will take residual damage after making contact with one. | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
35 | Mimik | Mimiks are a rare type of enemy that are bound to catch you off guard - just when you're approaching a treasure chest, ready to claim your bountiful reward from inside, chest attacks you, revealing itself to be an angry Mimik! Their high HP and defenses make them difficult foes to take down, especially considering their powerful bite attacks, but if you can defeat one, you're certain to obtain many rare treasures! | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
44 | Succubus | Succubi are some of the strongest enemies, found late in the game inside the fortifications of Lord Azazel's Tower. They are difficult enemies to deal with due to their high attack power and agility, and most frighteningly of all, their ability to infatuate and immobilize party members with their looks. To deal with them effectively, use heavy-hitting close-range attacks to take advantage of their low defense. (Based on the design from Kingdombound by CrakaboLazy4090) | |||||||||||||

Bosses
Bosses are strong types of foe that are fought occassionally throughout the game, generally twice per chapter (although there are some exceptions, including the Prologue, which has only 1 boss, and Chapter 7, which has 3 bosses). Bosses are unique in that they have significantly more health than regular enemies and are able to summon weaker foes to assist them in battle, doing so more frequently at lower HP levels.
The game's bosses are listed below, in the order they are fought.
Lokjor | A high-ranking lieutenant in Lord Azazel's army, Lokjor attacks Clove and Remul during their attempted escape from Scorch Valley during the Prologue. He's a hard-hitting opponent who is able to attack with bites, scratches, and most notably, his two tridents. During the fight, he will call for Hell Pups to support his assault. His high defense can be worked around by using Special Attacks. | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
Azazel's Clone | A spectral clone summoned to fight in place of Lord Azazel. The phantasmal recreation of the demon overlord fights in the same manner as the real counterpart would, with dark magic attacks, dark fireballs and poison. Their cloak protects them from some effects of Special Attacks, so it may be better to use Basic Attacks to deal consistent damage. | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
The Forgemaster | The Forgemaster is a mechanical titan dwelling in the depths of the Infernal Forge, set there to guard the forge and prevent souls (such as Remul) from being unbound from their objects. The Forgemaster attacks with its molten hammer and red-hot bladesaw, and does so with great force and power. Thankfully, it is very slow, but will take a lot of hits to bring down! | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
Grutus | The weakest grunt of the Imstrel Adventure Squad, Grutus fights on behalf of his team to attempt to stop Clove, Remul and Hugo from reaching the Crawling Caverns and finding the Holy Key located there. Grutus attacks with his signature weapon - bombs. Be aware, as these do massive damage if you're in close proximity to them when they blow up. He'll also heal himself periodically using cookies. | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
Vahala | Vahala is a Draconid tasked with guarding the entrances and exits to the Underworld. Historically, Vahala was always Satan's right hand, but in recent years their strength has been diminished due to several failures as a guardian. Vahala guards the Blistering Dungeons' exits and attacks using widespread fire attacks that damage all characters on the player's team. | ||||||||||||

Locations

Inferno takes place in the Underworld, specifically, the coastal district of Scorch Valley. The main hub of the game is Hell City, which is by far the largest settlement in the Underworld, and provides access to many of Scorch Valley's other areas including Lucifer's Stand, Withered Badlands and the Forest of Shadows.
When individuals die in the Overworld, their souls either depart for Paradise or Scorch Valley. Those deemed to have done good will go to Paradise and live in peace, while souls considered unworthy of this luxurious afterlife are sentenced to Scorch Valley. Upon their arrival, they will fall through the Crimson Sky, a blanket of blood red clouds that separates the Underworld from the Overworld. Furthermore, most souls will transform into the form of either an Imstrel or a Ghost when they arrive.
The player is able to navigate the world using Pazazu's Map, an ancient scroll that depicts the regions of Scorch Valley. As the player progresses through the story, they are able to unlock more dungeons to fast travel to, which are indicated on the map with a green flag. Furthermore, there are other locations such as shops and bonus dungeons that the player can fast travel to.
Dungeons
Each of the game's seven chapters are divided into two dungeons, the second requiring the first to be completed in order to access. Each area is home to at least one boss.
Dungeons can be freely revisited at any point in the game after they are unlocked, allowing the player to backtrack for the purposes of grinding or tracking down missed treasure chests. The exception to this is Hell City, the tutorial dungeon. While the initial tutorial area cannot be revisited at all, a small dungeon is made available to the player at that location after they complete Chapter 1.
- Red text indicates that the dungeon is present in the base game of Inferno.
- Blue text indicates that the dungeon is only present in the Inferno: Pluto's Curse expansion.
Part 1 | Part 2 | |
---|---|---|
Prologue | Hell City The largest settlement in Scorch Valley and the one in which all fallen souls will end up after dying. The city is underdeveloped in many areas and is severely poverty stricken, with crime extremely high in the poorer ends of the city. At the start of the game, Clove ends up here and joins forces with Remul in order to escape Lokjor's pursuit. Boss: Lokjor | |
Chapter 1 | Lucifer's Stand A mountain range on the outskirts of Hell City. Named after a previous King of the Underworld, Lucifer's Stand contains the highest peaks in the area as well as barren plateaus and hazardous cliffs. The mountains contain several abandoned mines, including the heavily-guarded Infernal Mines. Boss: Lord Azazel's Clone |
Infernal Mines A high-security mine located within Lucifer's Stand, the Infernal Mines contain the Infernal Forge, a powerful mechanism capable of separating trapped souls from the objects they are bound too. However, the mines are set to be protected by a powerful automaton created by none other than Satan, the first King of the Underworld. Boss: Forgemaster |
Chapter 2 | Vulcan's Canyon One of the natural wonders of the Underworld, Vulcan's Canyon is a large gorge between mountain ranges formed by a magma river. The area's remoteness and astonishingly steep drops make it a popular spot for younger Imstrels to hang out and test their flying skills. Boss: Grutus |
Creeping Caverns A network of narrow caves lying deep underneath Vulcan's Canyon. The caverns are home to thousands of deadly insects, making it a suitable location for one of the Holy Keys to be hidden. The depths of the caves are pitch black, meaning some form of light source is necessary to explore them properly. Boss: Vulcan's Heart |
Chapter 3 | Spitfire Shore Scorch Valley's southwest coastline is home to many black sand beaches formed from volcanic materials ejected from Mount Beelzebub. The area is popular among treasure hunters due to the frequent remains of shipwrecks that wash up here. Local rumors say that singing can be heard from the beach at night. Boss: Lokjor |
Sunken Shipyard A half-submerged shipwreck lying at the foot of the volcanic island, Mount Beelzebub. The ship was wrecked over 200 years ago, but the ghosts of the crew still roam the island's shores to this day. Unimaginable treasures are believed to lie inside, free to take for anyone brave enough to face the spirits of the pirate crew that died here. Boss: Bloodbeard |
Chapter 4 | Withered Badlands An expansive desert, entirely void of any settlements, that covers nearly 50% of Scorch Valley. Many years ago, the desert was used as an excavation site to mine the sandstone and iron required to construct Hell City. An ancient dungeon known as The Pit can be found deep within the Withered Badlands. Boss: Sizzlica |
Cliffs of Oblivion A desolate and remote outcrop, lying at the edge of the Withered Badlands and overlooking the Southern Ocean. The Cliffs are home to many abandoned castles and fortresses once used to defend Scorch Valley against invading armies from the ocean to the south. There is a magical spring somewhere here. Boss: Toci |
Chapter 5 | Lord Azazel's Battlements A vast network of fortresses built around the base of Lord Azazel's Skyscraper. built to prevent any common folk from coming close to the Ruler of the Underworld's residence. The area is teaming with Imstrel Guards 24/7, who don't hesitate to use unrelenting force when it comes to protecting their leader. Boss: Cerberus |
Blistering Dungeons Deep below the surface of Scorch Valley lies a molten chamber where the most evil souls are left to rot, isolated from the rest of the Underworld's civilization. Every so often, Lord Azazel visits the dungeons to command his pet dragon, Vahala, to devour the souls of those incarcerated here. Boss: Vahala |
Chapter 6 | Forest of Shadows One of the only untouched areas of Scorch Valley, the Forest of Shadows is a dark woodland that no light can penetrate due to the density of foliage. Very few that venture into the woods are never seen again, either falling victim to the maze-like interior of the forest, or the ravenous wildlife that lie within. Boss: Diablo |
Toxic Moor An uninhabited, heavily wooded plateau near the northern reaches of Scorch Valley's border. The area is notorious for its hazardous wildlife that have evolevd to survive the harsh conditions of the moor - this includes carnivorous plants, enormous insects and undead beasts that were sent to live out here far away from the rest of Scorch Valley's society. Boss: Fuzzywuzzy |
Chapter 7 | Hell City Sewers A secret underpass below Hell City, connecting many of the major landmarks. At most times, the sewers are filled with toxic waste, though recently they have fallen into a state of disrepair and are less frequently used. The sewers provide access to almost every building in Hell City, including Lord Azazel's Tower, but many creatures are believed to dwell here. Boss: Diablo, Sizzlica and Grutus |
Lord Azazel's Tower A majestic, towering skyscraper that can be seen from all over Scorch Valley. This is the residence of Lord Azazel and many members of the Underworld Defense Force. The tower has 666 floors, with Floor 665 being Azazel's Throne Room and Floor 666 housing the ruinous remains of the Heavenly Gateway - the only exit from the Underworld. Boss: Lord Azazel |
Epilogue | The Heavenly Gateway A dimension that consists of nothing but pure, blinding light, which acts as a one-way passage between The Living World and the Underworld. Boss: ??? |
Pluto's Island Dungeons
Some dungeons in the game are only accessible from Pluto's Island, an area accessible only through purchasing the Pluto's Curse expansion pass. None of these dungeons are required to be completed in order to beat the game, as they simply serve as option side-areas where rare items and tough foes can be found.

Shops
Shops are locations in Scorch Valley where the player can exchange items they have collected across Scorch Valley, primarily Gold, though certain shops exist where the player can exchange other items. At most shops, the player is also able to sell any of their own items (with the exception of clothing items) at 1/2 of their standard purchase rate.
- Red text indicates that the shop is present in the base game of Inferno.
- Blue text indicates that the shop is only present in the Inferno: Pluto's Curse expansion.
Char Bazaar Accessible after completing Chapter 1. Char Bazaar, indicated on the world map by a pink bag icon, is a market in Hell City where the player is able to purchase items from Vilaine, the travelling merchant. Her stock includes items such as Potions and Spell Books. The player is required to visit here during Chapters 3 and 4 after being given a quest by Vilaine. |
Phoebe's Exchange Accessible after completing Chapter 4. Phoebe's Exchange indicated on the world map by a purple bag icon, is a special service located in the Withered Badlands where the player can meet with Phoebe to exchange collected Books and ingredients for more useful Spell Tomes, free of any Gold charge. Unlike other shops, items cannot be sold here, as the only possible exchanges are Books and ingredients for Spell Tomes. |
Jack O'Wares Accessible after arriving on Pluto's Island. Jack O'Wares, indicated on the world map by an orange bag icon, is a sketchy store located on Pluto's Island, where Jack O'Lantern sells their wares. Items in Jack's stock are considerably cheaper than Char Bazaar and other locations, however many of the items sold here are fakes and won't do anything when used. |
Bonus Dungeons
In addition to the game's 16 mandatory dungeons that are explored during the course of the story, there are other optional areas accessible to the player on the world map after certain criteria are met.
The Pit Accessible after completing Chapter 6. The Pit is an ancient dungeon built by the founders of Scorch Valley thousands of years ago. To this day, it is used by Lord Azazel's inventors to test the potency of artifically-created monsters and beasts. The Pit serves as a Boss Rush, where the player faces enhanced versions of all the game's bosses back-to-back. Completing The Pit will grant the player with a special reward. Bosses: Forgemaster Prime, Vulcan's Heart Prime, Lokjor Prime, Bloodbeard Prime, Toci Prime, Cerberus Prime, Vahala Prime, Fuzzywuzzy Prime, Grutus Prime, Sizzlica Prime, Diablo Prime, Lord Azazel Prime, ??? |
Items
Items are objects that can be carried in Clove's inventory and used in battle. Using an item during battle uses up a turn and consumes the item, but provides a helpful effect to the party member that it is used on.
The player is able to hold up to 100 individual items in their inventory at any time. Items of the same type will stack together for the player's convenience, but will still add to the overall total carrying capacity. Should the player wish to carry more items, they must deposit them in the Void Vault, a remote storage unit that can hold up to 1000 items and can be accessed from a Void Terminal at the start of any dungeon. Certain items such as Gold are not affected by either of these limits.
Items are able to be purchased with and sold for Gold at several locations in the game. The easiest place to obtain them is at Char Bazaar from Vilaine. As the player progresses through the game, more items will become available for purchase.

Potions are one-time consumable items that, once drunk, will apply an affect on the character that drunk it for either a set number of turns, or in some cases, for the rest of that battle.

Spell Tomes are consumable items that, when applied, give one character of the player's choosing a unique move for the rest of the battle's duration. Trivia
- Inferno was originally intended to be a beat-em-up with 3D platforming segments. This was changed.
- Inferno is the first of Spheal's projects to:
- Include direct references to an earlier project and hints towards a shared universe.
- Include a romantic relationship between two main characters.
- Things that inspired Inferno include the song Charlie's Inferno by That Handsome Devil, Vivienne's Medrano's Helluva Boss, Pixar's Soul and Nintendo's Mario & Luigi games.
- As in games such as Golden Sun: Dark Sawn and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, after defeating the final boss the player is returned to their last save point, which was before the boss was defeated. A small amount of content is added to the world after defeating the final boss, meaning the player must backtrack throughout the world in order to access it.
- Despite many of the religious themes and undertones present in Inferno, Spheal is not religious, but simply finds a lot of aspects of religion to be interesting.
- Inferno features several references to other Fantendo projects, including:
- Draco Duel - Vahala, a playable character in the games, is a boss in Inferno's story. Furthermore, Ziggy and Zarra appear as NPCs.
- Kingdombound - Succubi, based on a design in this game, appear as enemies in the final world of Inferno.
- Starshards - Clove's Poffer Outfit and Bubble Outfit are based on the appearances of Poffer Lord and Suddle Bubb respectively.
- The Overclove - Clove's Lucky Outfit is based on Agustaclove's appearance.
- Project Cape - Clove's Cell Outfit is based on Cellular's appearance.
- Gunstoppable - Clove's Thrill Outfit is based on Jam's appearance.
- Quentin Lustrum's Great Escape - Clove's Hex Outfit is based on Quentin's appearance.
- Heirs to the Wrath - Clove's Apollo Outfit is based on Alec's appearance.
Anti-Piracy Elements
Inferno has several built-in anti-piracy measures. If the system suspects that it is running an illegitimate copy of Inferno, or if it is believed that Inferno is being played on an emulator, several effects will occur. These effects are not intended to make the game unplayable, but rather to make it incredibly frustrating to the point where the player would simply prefer to buy a legitimate copy:
- During the intro to the prologue, a line of text appears on screen, reading: "It appears as though you are playing an illegitimate copy of Inferno. As such, you will be facing a very different experience to what most players will face in Scorch Valley. Please purchase a legitimate copy to support the developers if you wish to play Inferno the intended way."
- Certain NPCs such as Ziggy, Zarra and Vilaine have their dialogue changed and will speak with hostility towards the player, making snide comments towards them and accusing them of being a thief.
- All enemies, with the exception of Bosses, Mimiks and Gilded Mimiks, are replaced by Succubi.
- All bosses will automatically restore HP each turn, roughly equal to 1/5 of their maximum HP.
- All treasure chests in dungeons will be replaced by Mimiks or Gilded Mimiks.
- All items purchasable from shops have their price increased to 999 Gold. In addition, all items can only be sold for 1 Gold each.
- All unlockable costumes have their textures replaced, making them all appear entirely black.
Unused Elements
Game data exists in the game for several features that were not included in the final product of Inferno:
- There exist 2 enemies within the game's data that cannot be found anywhere within the game. These are recolors of the Skulker and Driplet enemies, most likely originally intended to be stronger versions of the enemies. They have in-game models and can be fought by using hacks, however they will function exactly the same as their normal-colored counterparts.
