Goombarry is a friendly Paragoomba merchant who debuts in Paper Mario: Countdown to Calamity as your second partner and first permanent partner in Chapter One.
Appearance[]
Like many Paragoombas and Goombas in general, Goombarry has a brown mushroom-like head, small body, round feet with tan bottoms, black eyebrows, and one tooth sticking out. He also wears a kasa hat patterned like a red mushroom with white spots, reddish-brown ribbon tied around his hidden neck, and a large backpack.
Personality[]
Goombarry is quite the hardworking spirit, desperately trying to earn enough money for his family pressured by taxes through economics. However, he doesn't have too much knowledge for such topic, so he tries to use all the information he knows to his advantage. That being said, he can also be quite overly hyperactive and forgetful, occasionally forgetting the reason he's earning treasures to begin with and being greedy at times, although this is gradually contained throughout the rest of his arc.
History[]
Pre-series[]
Goombarry lived with his biological family in Dawnsbury alongside his mother, father, and younger twin sisters, who suffered among poverty. Eventually, the family struggled to pay taxes and his mother was sick with an unknown virus, so Goombarry wanted to earn money so his family can pay their taxes, as well as earn enough for a scan of the virus.
After a while of thinking, he decided to become a merchant, since Marketplace Day was his favorite event. However, the business was quite harder than he imagined, as at first no one came to purchase his items. However, when he crafted other kinds of physical weapons besides hammers and boots using wood and sold it, it became a staple of his business, though he still was a little low on coins.
Paper Mario: Countdown to Calamity[]
Mario and Vixie first encounter him being robbed by Rookie. After defeating him, Goombarry thanks Mario and goes back to his business. Later on, he is the only resident seen attempting to fight off the corrupted enemies. When they are all defeated, he asks Mario if he can join Mario on their adventure, and is accepted.
When they arrive in the mole beast's cave, Goombarry tries to climb the treasure pile for the Red gem, only to wake the beast up. After Chapter One is completed, his shop is unlocked in the Calamity Bunker, which is run by a blue toad when he's not active and following Mario.
