Gex is the titular protagonist of the Gex series of platforming video games, where players guide him through an assortment of worlds inspired by different kinds of television programs, including cartoons, mystery shows, horror series, and even holiday specials, among others. He inherited a large amount of money from his late great-uncle Charlie and used it to buy a mansion where he currently resides. One day in the mansion, he snacked on a fly buzzing around the room - not realizing it was a transmitter sent out by his soon-to-be archnemesis Rez, who wanted to capture him and make him the mascot for his new television empire. After putting a stop to his plan, he was hired by a secret agency known as the TV Terrorist Defense Unit and he joined forces with Agent Xtra, who became his love interest.
Throughout his games, he makes a lot of one-liners referencing pop culture, giving the series a somewhat more mature sense of humor compared to other mascot platforming series of its kind.
