Froakie is a quadrupedal, amphibian Pokémon, having a light blue skin, three-fingered white hands and a dark navy stripe in the dead center of its oval head, ending at two foam bubbles on its face. From its head protrudes two large eyes with yellow sclera, black irises and white pupils, each on one end of the head. There are three spots on its back, which are usually unseen, due to these being hidden by a large mass of foam, covering most of its back and a bit of its chest.
The flexible bubbles Froakie produces from its foam are dubbed Frubbles (known in Japanese as ケロムース (Keromousse)), and these reduce the damage that a Froakie takes, acting as a protection for its skin. While Froakie are happy-go-lucky and carefree species, they do keep an eye on their surroundings and stay wary for attacks.
- Froakie is the smallest of all official Starter Pokémon, being just a foot tall.
Froakie is based on some kind of frog, possibly tree frogs. The bubbling white foam it is able to create might be a reference to frog foam nests, created by a handful species of frogs.
Froakie's foam on its back heavily resembles a backpack in shape, which it can store items in, and in certain occasions, it uses its foam as a mask, thus making it believe it is also based on Japanese burglars, dorobō, which in folklore, use Furoshiki cloth bags to hide their stolen loot and mask their identity.
Considering Froakie's references to thievery, as well as its evolutions, it might also be based on a ninja.
Froakie is possibly derived from frog, froth, croak, and rookie.
Keromatsu is a combination of ケロケロ kerokero (onomatopoeia for a frog's croaking) and either 沫 matsu (bubble or foam) or 飛沫 himatsu (spray or splash).
