Fire Piranha Plants, formerly called Venus Fire Traps, are a variety of Piranha Plants that have the ability to spit fireballs. They appear commonly alongside regular Piranha Plants in the Mario series, spitting fireballs aimed at Mario. They are found exclusively in Pipes in the 2D games, though the 3D games also have them sitting on the ground. Since Super Mario 3D Land, Fire Piranha Plants are dark brown in color with orange spots.
Fire Piranha Plant makes its debut as a playable character in Mario Tennis Aces, appearing as a Technical-type character. It moves around while inside a pot, similar to Potted Piranha Plants in Super Mario 3D World or the playable Piranha Plant in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Fire Piranha Plants appear in Super Mario Allies as enemies. They can spit fireballs at Mario, which will damage him if he is bit by them. These fireballs are shaped like the fireball sprites in the original Super Mario Bros. Any attack can defeat them.
Mario initially cannot Capture a Fire Piranha Plant with Cappy, as it will eat him when he is thrown at one. Instead, Mario must throw a projectile into its mouth before he can Capture it. As a Fire Piranha Plant, Mario can spit fireballs that can both damage enemies and burn down obstacles. F.L.U.D.D.'s water is able to disable the fireballs, and Baby Luma's spin attack can defeat them.
Fire Piranha Plant appears as a playable character in Mario Kart: Infinity Remix. It is a Lightweight character, meaning that its acceleration and handling stats are good, but its speed and weight stats are also quite low. It also has poor mini-turbo, but good acceleration.
Fire Piranha Plant is an unlockable character, and is unlocked randomly after winning a gold trophy on any cup on any engine class.
A Fire Piranha Plant appears in Super Mario Spikers, being a Power-type captain. It uses the design from Super Mario 3D World onward, and much like in Mario Tennis Aces, it resides in a flower pot. It also wears an orange visor. Its emblem is its head, and its theme is Bush Ballad.
