— Trycylde, Super Mario Advance

Tryclyde (Japanese: ガブチョ Gabucho), often misspelled Triclyde, is a member of the 8 Bits and a boss in the Super Mario series. Tryclyde is a three-headed snake who loyally serves Wart, and works alongside the frog-like king to conquer the lands of Muu and Subcon in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2. Throughout his appearances, Tryclyde often fights his enemies by shooting fireballs from his mouths. Tryclyde's multi-headed design was likely inspired by the Lernaean Hydra from Greek mythology, which is a water serpent that possesses a large amount of heads which will regenerate double the amount should one be cut off.

Little is actually known about Tryclyde, as he has made seldom appearances outside of Super Mario Bros. 2 and its many ports and remakes. He is described to be a cunning individual, whose three brains allow him to be far more offensive than a normal Cobrat; it is for these reasons that Wart recruited Tryclyde for his cause. Tryclyde has also been described as an outcast, likely due to him having three heads instead of one.

Like all of the other bosses in Super Mario Advance (except Birdo and Robirdo), Tryclyde was voiced by Charles Martinet.

Physical Appearance[]

Tryclyde features a very basic design consisting of a snake-like body that divides into three heads each with their own set of eyes and mouths, with the latter being filled with spiked teeth (though whether these sprout from the top or bottom of the mouths varies between his appearances). Each of the three necks have a striped patch of skin, which connect together as they merge together down around the serpent's stomach, and continues down towards his tail. The backs of each of Tryclyde's heads also have stripes running horizontally upon them. While Tryclyde possesses three heads in all of his appearances, they are not all the same size: the head in the middle is almost-always shown to be exceptionally larger, and may be the one in control of the body's movements.

In the Super Mario-Kun manga series, each of Tryclyde's heads are given unique personalities and often bicker with each other. All of the three heads are also shown to be different sizes in this appearance, with the right head being the smallest, followed by the head on the left (which also dons a pair of glasses), with the middle head once again being the largest in size. Also, like King Koopa and Mouser, Tryclyde's appearances in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! often see it wearing different costumes depending on the setting or tone of the episode, such as wearing gladiator-like clothing in The Great Gladiator Gig to fit the Roman motif, and suits and bowler hats in The Unzappables to match the mafia-like vibe of the Koopa Pack in this episode.

Despite Tryclyde's minimal appearances in the Mario series, he has undergone several changes in his colour scheme and possesses a different one in almost every one of his appearances:

  • In Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2 his body is primarily red, with a white belly, and black stipes running across both the stomach area and the back of his three heads. All artwork of Tryclyde uses this design, despite it only appearing in these games and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
  • In Super Mario All-Stars he is instead a turquoise colour with a green stomach, and slightly-lighter orange stripes on his stomach and the backs of his head. This colour scheme is retained somewhat in Super Mario Advance, though his sprite possesses lighter shades of the same colours.
  • In BS Super Mario USA Tryclyde instead possesses a lime green body with a yellow stomach, and the stripes on the back of his heads appear to be a darker shade of green.
  • In the colouring game Super Mario Bros. & Friends: When I Grow Up, which features significantly less-detailed designs for most characters, Tryclyde's body is a solid crimson colour, though he still possesses black stripes running down each of his necks and stomach.

Game Appearances[]

New Super Mario NX[]

Tryclyde appears as the fortress boss of World 2, Doom Doop Desert, in New Super Mario NX. He is fought in an arena with several urns, and his fight is extremely similar to those of Lemmy Koopa and Wendy O. Koopa from Super Mario World: Tryclyde will dive into an urn before appearing out of another one and shoot a fireball out at Mario. Should the player stomp on him while he peeks out of an urn one of his heads will be defeated, and thus he must be hit three times.

Mario & Luigi: Yoshi's Story[]

Tryclyde makes a minor appearance in Mario & Luigi: Yoshi's Story, appearing in the game's ending alongside several other characters helping to repair Princess Peach's Castle.

Super Mario: Revenge of the Forgotten[]

Tryclyde reappears alongside many of the villains from Super Mario Bros. 2 as a boss in Super Mario: Revenge of the Forgotten. This game once again has him serve under Wart, who kidnaps Princess Peach and Princess Daisy in order to throw their kingdoms into turmoil. Tryclyde is fought as the boss of World 2, following after the fortress boss Red Birdo.

Super Mario Revival series[]

In the first season of the Super Mario Revival animated series, Tryclyde appears as one of the numerous villains summoned by [[King Polarite to cause havoc and assist him in locating the Golden Star Treasure.

Mario 3D World 2: The Dream World[]

Tryclyde appears as one of the bosses in Mario 3D World 2: The Dream World. In the opening cutscene, Tryclyde is one of the villains, alongside Mouser, Fryguy, and Clawgrip, who ambushes the Mario Bros. and their friends after they return to the Mushroom Kingdom following the events of Super Mario 3D World. Tryclyde shoves Luigi into a vase to teleport him away from his brother. He later appears as the boss of World 2-3.

In the second quest, which replaces all of the bosses with other characters, Tryclyde is replaced by Morton Koopa Jr. and Roy Koopa.

New Super Mario Bros. Dream[]

Tryclyde reappears in New Super Mario Bros. Dream alongside several other members of the 8 Bits. In this game he works under Mouser, who has abducted Princess Peach in a manner not dissimilar to Bowser. In this game Tryclyde spews black projectiles similar in appearance to Superballs at Mario during his boss fight, and must be defeated by throwing various items at him to daze him.
