Mario Kart Something is a kart racing game and the ninth major installment in the Mario Kart series. The game is being developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. The game release on May 29, 2020.

Gameplay[]

Mario Kart Something keeps the traditional gameplay of the Mario Kart series. Characters from the Mario universe race against eachother in various vehicles, each with stats and their own strengths and weaknesses. Up to 12 characters then race through obstacle-filled courses, using items obtained from item boxes to improve their performance or hinder other racers.

Mario Kart Something brings back many mechanics from past games. The player can collect coins like in Super Mario Kart, which can be used to increase your top speed. Unlike recent Mario Kart games, the player can collect up to 20 coins. Special Items make their return from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, giving each character a unique item and making your character choice more important. Vehicle customization returns from Mario Kart 7, allowing players to modify their bodies, wheels and tires, along with Gliding and Underwater Driving. Antigravity racing and its mechanics return from Mario Kart 8

Gameplay Changes[]

Many changes were made to gameplay in order to give Mario Kart Something a more skill-based style of play.

  • The overall speed of racing has been increased.
  • The jump height has increased, allowing you to access shortcuts, jump over Green Shells and Bananas, or steal items from enemies you on.
  • Added Drop Boosting, allowing you to perform a boost when starting to accelerate upon reaching the ground.
  • Added Ampli-Boosting, allowing you to combine two different boosts into one powerful boost.
  • The Ultra Mini-Turbo is a lot more powerful, however, if a player holds an Ultra Mini-Turbo for too long, it will revert back to a Super Mini-Turbo.
    • To make this easier, a "Drift Meter" can now be seen under a racer while they drift, which can make it easier for them to get the drift boost they want.
  • Dragging an item behind you for too long causes you to slow down. Now, players need to pull out an item at the right time, instead of being able to hold it behind you for as long as you want.
  • The player can now switch and reserve items, similar to how they can in Mario Kart: Double Dash. This allows players to hold onto an item for later use. You can even swap multi-use items while you are in the middle of using them, though doing so will cause the item's timer to slowly deplete.
  • Coins are now a bit more common on the track. The amount of coins a player can hold is increased to 20, though the more coins you have, the more coins you lose when you get hit. The boost you get from a coin is also a bit more noticable.
  • Several items work differently.
    • Items that can be used multiple times can now be charged. This will often use up all or most of an item's ammo, but makes up for it by giving it a secondary use, like shooting the item all at once. Items that are charged are signified by a yellow glow surrounding the item.
    • The Spiny Shell now flies in a sine wave-pattern, making it harder to dodge for other racers on its way to 1st place.
    • The Fake Item Box is not only back, but is now similar in color to an Item Box again. Also, if a player runs into one, rather than spinning out, it will appear as if they had an item, before a Bowser symbol appears and creates an explosion. Players can also now replace Item Boxes they run into with Fake Item Boxes, as long as they have one.
    • Bob-Ombs are now proximity-based, only exploding when a racer gets near.
    • The Mega Mushroom now has the added effect of amplifying any boosts you perform, though you will slow down when going off-road.
    • The Bubble acts entirely different from its appearence in Mario Kart Tour, now acting as a more traditional shield.
    • The Blooper's ink now also reduces your handling, making it hard to turn at corners.
    • The Heart allows you to bump into enemies to steal items, alongside picking up items off the track.
    • The Yoshi Egg launches the Green Shells and Red Shells they release. Red Shells will fly slower than Green Shells, and will home into players when they get near it (though it can be rather inaccurate).
    • The Boomerang Flower can now grab items and bring them to you.
    • Boos allow you to drive on rough terrain, similar to how it works in Mario Kart DS. It also steals two items rather than one.
  • Getting hit by items, rather than stopping your momentum, will cause you to slide in the opposite direction you were hit. The lighter you are, the farther you are launched.
  • Items that create explosions (Spiny Shells, Fake Item Boxes, Bob-Ombs, Golden Shells and UFOs) will launch you into the air, similar to the older games. They'll also cause players to drop their item.
  • A screen on the bottom will show you which players you hit (indicated by their character being angry), and which players hit you (indicated by the character being happy).
  • Indicators will appear on the bottom if a player is behind you. It will also appear if a Red Shell, Bob-Omb, Bullet Bill or Star is behind you.
  • Smart Steering returns from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but now prevents players from using Ampli-Boosts or Ultra Mini Turboes.
  • Returning from Mario Kart 64 are Mini Bomb Karts. When a player is eliminated in Balloon Battle or Bob-Omb Blast, they transform into Mini Bomb Karts. As a Mini Bomb Kart, the player is unable to use items, and have very low stats, but can run into enemies to damage them. After a Mini-Bomb Kart explodes, the player needs to wait 10 seconds before they can attack again. If a player runs into a Mini-Bomb Kart and loses all of their balloons, the player that hit them respawns. It also appears in Super Soccer, where they are unable to blow up enemies, but can launch the ball a large distance. In here, it requires that players eliminate two players to be revived.

Techniques[]

  • Rocket Start: Launch from the grid with a speed boost by holding the A button just after the 2 on the countdown. Do it too early and you won't get a speed boost, and do it too late and you will spin out.
  • Jump: By pressing the R button to perform a jump. This can be used to access new paths, dodge hazards and items with proper timing, or jump on other racers to steal from them.
  • Jump Attack: Jump on top of an enemy to perform a Jump Attack, slowing down the foe for a second, and stealing an item from them. In Battle Mode, you can steal Balloons, Coins and Shine Sprites.
  • Jump Boost: By pressing the R button after jumping off of a ramp, you will perform a trick and gain a brief speed boost once you land
  • Drop Boost: Start accelerating once you hit the ground from a jump or when you are being placed on the track to gain a speed boost.
  • Ampli-Boost: By performing two different boosts at the same time, (Either from a Jump Boost, a Drop Boost, a Mini-Turbo, a Mushroom, or a Boost Panel) you can combine the two boosts into one, super-powered boost. You automatically perform an Ampli-Boost when using one while under the effects of a Mega Mushroom.
  • Power Slide: Hold the R button to turn at sharp corners without reducing your speed.
  • Mini-Turbo: By holding a Power Slide for long enough, you will build up sparks. Once you release the R button, you will gain a short speed boost. It will change from blue, to orange (a Super Mini-Turbo) to pink (an Ultra Mini-Turbo). The player has only a brief time to hold an Ultra Mini-Turbo until it turns back to orange.
  • Drift Brake: While you are drifting, pressing the B button will drop your speed briefly, making it easier to turn corners. Intergral in higher difficulties.
  • Slipstream: Race behind an enemy for long enough to gain a slipstream, increasing your speed for a short time.
  • Item Charge: Hold the L button to charge an item. The charged item is signified by a yellow glow. This will normally change how the item works, but use all or most of the item. Only works with items that can be used multiple times.
  • Spin Turn: Holding both A and B while steering will allow you to turn on the spot.
  • Tag Boost: If your partner was hit by an item, driving by them or using a boost allows you to give them a speed boost, allowing them to get back into the race. Only usable in Tag Team.
  • Tandem Boost: Boosting at the same time allows you perform a super-powered boost, similar to a Ampli-Boost. Only usable in Tag Team.
  • U-Turn: Holding both A and B while steering will allow you to do a U-turn. Only usable in Battle Mode.

Modes[]

Grand Prix[]

Grand Prix is a mode in which up to 4 players can compete in a series of 4 tracks, known as a Cup. Players earn points depending on the place they finished in, with the sum of all your placements determining your final ranking. The player in 1st gets a Gold Trophy, 2nd gets Silver, 3rd gets Bronze, and the rest get nothing and lose. Players can choose one of 4 difficulties, though one, 200cc, needs to be unlocked by getting a Gold Trophy in every other difficulty.

This mode features 4 different difficulties.

  • 50cc: The easiest difficulty. The speed is low and the CPUs are quite peaceful.
  • 100cc: A medium difficulty The speed is moderate and the CPUs can be a bit aggressive.
  • 150cc: A harder difficulty. This speed is high and CPUs can be quite dangerous.
  • 200cc: A very hard difficulty. The speed is extremely high and CPUs are extremely dangerous. Braking is key.

As players play a cup, their score increases as they place high in laps, hit players with items and perform techniques. Once the cup ends, the amount of points you get will determine your Star Rank, from D to Triple Star.

Time Trials[]

Time Trials can only be played in Singleplayer. The player is given Three Mushrooms, and is tasked with completing a selected course in the shortest amount of time, all without any other players interfering with you. Players can also race against Ghosts, which are either the save times of other players, Nintendo Staff, or your own. Each track has two Staff Ghosts, one for 150cc, and the other for 200cc. 200cc Staff Ghosts is unlocked by beating the 150cc Staff Ghosts. 200cc Staff Ghosts are more difficult than 150cc Staff Ghosts, as they utilize more shortcuts.

VS[]

Versus Mode allows up to 4 players to play on any course of their selection. Serving as a sort of "free play mode", the players is able to customize the rules of the race for a more preferred racing experience. These include:

  • Difficulty: The player can determine the difficulty, either selecting 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, Mirror, Reverse or 200cc.
  • Teams: The player can toggle on and off teams. If teams are on, players are put into a team and must compete against the other team.
  • CPUs: The player can choose to have CPUs on or off. Only available if there are more than one player.
  • Number of Laps: The player can determine the number of laps in a race, selecting between Standard, the default number of laps for each track, alongside choosing the number from 1 to 9 for every track. In sectioned tracks, if a player chooses a number of laps over 3, after crossing the last section, players are teleported back to the start.
  • Items: The player can toggle which items are on and off. They can also choose different settings for the items, toggle if special items are character-exclusive or not, or even make it so players only have one item slot rather than two.
    • Standard: Items will appear like how they do in other modes.
    • Skillful: Items like Lightning, Stars and Bullet Bills will appear less, and weaker items like Green Shells and Bananas will appear more, allowing for more skill-based races.
    • Frantic: Items like Green Shells and Bananas will appear less, and more powerful items will become more common in higher places, allowing for more chaotic races.

Special Modes[]

These Special Modes can be activated to add various effects to a race, or create certain new modes. These modes can be combined with each others to create even crazier races (with the exception of Point Race and Elimination, which cannot be selected together).

Mirror Mode In Mirror Mode, the tracks are mirrored, having racers take the opposite turns they would normally go.
Reverse Mode In Reverse Mode, the tracks are reversed, having racers go the opposite way they would normally go. Certain tracks are modified to make them playing in reverse.
Trick Mode In Trick Mode, tracks are modified to include more ramps and other trickable objects.
Tag Team In Tag Team, two players (either random or selectable in multiplayer) are tethered together and must work together in order to beat the other racers. Swapping items is replaced with being able to give items to your partner and boosts are shared between both racers, but if one racer falls behind they will slow down the other. Teamwork is needed in order to win in this mode.
Point Race In Point Race, the goal is to get the most points possible within the time limit. These points act similar to how they do in Grand Prix, increasing by placing high in a lap, hitting players with items and performing techniques. Once time runs out, the player with the most points wins.
Elimination In Elimination, the goal is to be the last to survive. The mode features no laps, but as players race, a timer goes down. Once it reaches zero, the player in last place is eliminated. It then repeats until only one racer is left, in which they become the winner.

Battle[]

Battle Mode is a mode where players, rather than being placed in a race track, are placed in large battle stages, and have to complete certain objectives, depending on the mode selected. The game features 6 modes of play, being Balloon Battle, Coin Runners, Shine Theif, Bob-Omb Blast, Renegade Roundup and Super Soccer. Similar to VS Mode, players can customize the rules for a more preferred experience.

Story[]

The time has come, the 9th Mario Kart tournament is finally here! Inside of a massive stadium, Mario, his friends and rivals are there racing against each other, with Mario finishing in 1st place. The crowd cheers, and as everyone crosses the finish line, Mario gets out of his kart. Peach, Luigi, Daisy, Yoshi and Toad congratulate him in his victory, while Bowser, in the corner, bitterly congratulates him as well. Suddenly, the clouds darken around them. A dark vortex forms out of the sky, and a large alien spaceship slowly floats down around it. Everyone in the stadium looks at it, as an ominous voice begins playing from it.

"Greetings Mushroom Kingdom residents! My name is King Kartpentus, leader of the Slimekins and the best and fastest kart racer in the galaxy! I travel the stars in order to seek out planets for me and my civilization to destroy, and we've decided that your planet is the perfect fit for total destruction! However, I'll strike a deal with all of you. If you are willing to send one individual, who is capable of defeating me in a race, then I'll gladly leave your planet alone. If not, kaboom! Hahaha!!"

The space station flies off into the distance. Many of the attendees escape, Bowser runs off, saying he'll show everyone how fast he is by racing Kartpentus himself, and Mario's friends have no idea what they're going to do. Mario, looking where the spaceship landed, a nearby mountain, and decides that he'll be the one to race against Kartpentus. Tagged along with Toad and Luigi, the three race off towards the spaceship.

Throughout their adventures, Mario faces off against many of Bowser's minions, who are each holding a Boss Key, a signification of their skill in that area. Defeating Petey Piranha, King Boo, Bowser Jr., King Bob-Omb and Bowser himself allows Mario to obtain their Boss Key, and obtaining all the Boss Keys are required to open the way to Kartpentus' ship.

Upon defeating them, Mario returns to Mushroom City, where the stadium from before is filled with blaring lights. Here, Mario meets Slimeta, Kartpentus' personal champion. Despite not having much experience in racing, she wishes to follow her leader, and challenges Mario to a challenge before he can beat Kartpentus. After defeating her, Slimeta realizes how much she loves racing, giving Mario the last key and a powerful engine to show her thanks.

Mario makes his way towards Kartpentus' ship, and after a challenging race, manages to defeat the alien. The Kartpentus is angered by this, demanding how Mario managed to defeat him. Slimeta then comes in, revealing Kartpentus has been cheating. Mario and co. are shocked by this. It turns out Slimeta gave Mario the engine to allow him to match Kartpentus' speed. Slimeta demands that Kartpentus apolagize and never attempt to destroy another planet again. Kartpentus, realizing his evil ways, does so, saying that Mario is the true best kart racer in the galaxy. As Mario and his friends exit the spaceship, they wave goodbye to the two aliens, as they fly back off into space.

Gameplay[]

In Adventure Mode, players travel across a large open world, split into various smaller worlds, completing various missions. Though some missions are traditional races, some missions are mini-games like racing through rings and defeating enemies. At the end of each world, the player must face off against a boss racer. Mushroom Cup[]

  • Luigi Arena: Luigi Arena is the first track in the Mushroom Cup. The track itself resembles Mario Kart Stadium, taking place in a massive stadium, though is themed after Luigi, including a large statue of Luigi. The track has a fairly simple layout, with little to no sharp turns. At one point in the track, racers go into an antigravity section, driving along the base of the Luigi statue. However, they shortly leave this area, then transfer into a gliding section. Shortly after this, they reach the finish line.
  • Koopa Resort: Koopa Resort is the second track in the Mushroom Cup. The track takes place on an island resort. Racers start off driving through a small forest before entering a large beach. Players must dodge relaxing Piantas, Nokis, Toads and Koopas. Once they reach the other side of the beach, they enter an underwater section in a coral reef, before entering a large hotel. After driving up a flight of stairs, they enter a gliding section into a pool. Racers then drive back into the forest and complete the track.
  • New Donk City: New Donk City is the third track in the Mushroom Cup. The track takes place in a large version of New Donk City from Mario Odyssey. The track features sharp corners and cars that, while not moving, need to be avoided. At one point, the player makes it to the tower and must choose two paths around it. Some time after this, they reach the finish line.
  • Tostarenan Ruins: Tostarenan Ruins is the final track in the Mushroom Cup. The track takes place in Tostarena in the Sand Kingdom from Mario Odyssey. After leaving the small town, players navigate a group of outdoor ruins, before entering an entrance to an underground temple. Players navigate the temple, dodging poisonous pits, before entering a gliding section and gliding out. Then after some more time in the desert, they make it to the finish line.

Flower Cup[]

  • Mario Circuit: Mario Circuit is the first track in the Flower Cup. Taking place in the Mushroom Kingdom, after driving through a small tunnel, the player drives through Toad Town, avoiding small trees. Driving across a dirt trail, they pass by Peach's Castle, and eventually enter a pipe, leading them to an anti-gravity second in an underground cavern, filled with crystals and waters. Players then suddenly enter into a small fortress, with various enemies appearing on the side of the track, before players enter a glider section, leaving the castle and making their way back to the finish line.
  • Shy Guy Park: Shy Guy Park is the second track in the Flower Cup. The track takes place in a large amusment park. Players pass by various attractions, a carousel, a swinging ship, etc. Eventually, the racers enter a pipe, making their way onto a dueling roller coaster track, where they must dodge an oncoming train when the lights flash on the track. After entering another pipe, racers enter a glider section to a large ferris wheel, and make it to the finish line.
  • Cascade Falls: Cascade Falls in the third track in the Flower Cup. The track takes place in the Cascade Kingdom from Mario Odyssey. The track starts at the bottom, with players using wooden bridges and rock formations to travel across the large mountain. Players eventually get into a glider section, flying through the waterfall and making it back to the ground, where after a short section, the players reach the finish line.
  • Waluigi Casino: Waluigi Casino is the final track in the Flower Cup. The track takes place in a golden, red and green casino, seemingly owned by Waluigi. After entering the casino, players pass my many Toads and enemies, using slots machines, though some are watching the race as well. At one point, players drive across a massive roulette table, which features boost panels that the players can use. Players eventually exit the casino through a glider section, then turn through a nighttime area before reaching the finish line.

Star Cup[]

  • DK Glacier: DK Glacier is the first track in the Star Cup. The track takes place on a large, rocky and icy mountain. At the start of the track, players can see Donkey Kong's house (where Cranky Kong can be seen sleeping). Players start the track by driving towards the mountain, jumping over small chasms and eventually entering several ice-filled caverns. Climbing up the mountain, players drive across icy bridges and go through even more caverns. Eventually, players enter a large downhill section, which eventually leads into a glider section across a large chasm. Players then enter an anti-gravity section, driving across the side of an icy canyon, jumping across falling icicles. Then, players leave that section, making to the finish line.
  • Sinister Steeple: Sinister Steeple in the second track in the Star Cup. The track starts off as a fairly simple haunted mansion. Players drive through libraries and a dining area filled with food. However, in the middle of the track, players enter a hallway that leads to a picture frame. Jumping through it, players enter a warped dimension, with pieces of the building are seen floating in the area. Players jump from piece to piece, either atop or through them. After going through this section, players enter another picture frame, making it back into the mansion, and back to the finish line.
  • Cloudy Festival: Cloudy Festival is the third track in the Star Cup. The track takes place in a large, Japanese-styled festival. Cherry blossoms and celebrating Toads and Koopas can be seen in the background. After passing by food stands, players enter a large temple. Trivia[]

General[]

  • This is the first game in the series after Mario Kart 7 to not have a number in the name.
  • This is the first game in the series to have another game in the series on the same console, in this case, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  • This game has the largest roster in the Mario Kart series, featuring 72 characters and beating out Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's roster of 41 characters.
  • Many of the gameplay changes (changes to certain items, nerfing item dragging, changes to battle mode, etc.) are inspired by Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart
  • The Special Modes are inspired by the Remix Modes in Mario Kart: Infinity Remix.
  • The game was originally planned to include a Mission Mode, similar to the one in Mario Kart DS. Several bosses were planned as well, such as Goomboss, Knucklotec, Mollusque-Launceur and Mechawiggler. The mode was scrapped with the developers deciding to do an adventure mode instead.

Characters[]

  • Mario Kart Something advertised bringing back almost every Mario Kart character, though the only characters to not return in some form are Donkey Kong Jr., R.O.B., Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach.
    • Gold Mario, Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach, though not playable, do reappear as skins.
  • Kartpentus is inspired by Lucien from Mario Tennis Aces and Nitrous Oxide from Crash Bandicoot.

Items[]

  • The Bubble Shield is primarily inspired by the Power Shield from Crash Team Racing, working in almost the exact same way.
    • This differs from the Bubble item featured in Mario Kart Tour, in which the Bubble would automatically carry the user and protect them from attacks
  • The charged version of the Piranha Plant is inspired by the Laser Wisp from the Sonic series, primarily how it works in Team Sonic Racing.
  • The charged version of the UFO is inspired by the Thunder Cloud, though made easier to use as in the original games, the Thunder Cloud would immediately activate upon obtaining.
  • Item Charging was primarily designed in order to give items more versatility, and make them more powerful in order to contend with other Special Items like Giant Bananas and Bowser Shells.
    • Originally, instead of charging items, players were able to spend coins in order to upgrade their items. This was scrapped for an unknown reason, though balancing may have been a factor in why.
  • Certain items change appearances when used by certain characters. (This does not affect how they look when a character is holding the item)
    • Rango when using the Launch Star instead uses his hat to launch himself into the air. The icon changes to resemble this.
    • Cappy and Tiara when using the Boomerang Flower throw themselves instead of a boomerang. The icon changes to resemble this.
    • The Boomerang Link uses is changed, resembling the Boomerang from Breath of the Wild.
    • When Spike uses the Hammer, it is instead a spiked club, similar the ones wield by Clubbas in the Paper Mario series.
    • When Morton uses the Hammer, it resembles his hammer that he uses in New Super Mario Bros. U.
    • When Kirby uses the Hammer, it resembles the hammer when using the Hammer ability in the Kirby games.
    • Ashley, Iggy and Ludwig's use their own magic wands. Also while Magikoopa launches his normal shot with the magic symbols, Ashley, Iggy and Ludwig launch a colored blast of energy (Red for Ashley, Green for Iggy and Blue for Ludwig).
    • Pikachu doesn't gain a magic wand, instead launching the shots by himself. His shots have a yellow color. The icon changes to resemble this.
    • Dry Bowser throws a Dry Bowser Shell instead of a Bowser Shell. The icon changes to resemble this.
    • Blooper's goop when using the Magic Paintbrush resembles squid ink. The icon changes to resemble this.
    • Spewart's goop when using the Magic Paintbrush resembles the poison he spits. The icon changes to resemble this.

Scrapped Content[]

  • Some characters were originally added into the game but were scrapped later on.
    • Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach were originally going to be characters, but after the introduction of Adventure Mode, they were scrapped in favor of Slimeta and Kartpentus.
    • A regular Boo and a Penguin were also considered, but scrapped due to time restraints.
    • Captain Falcon was considered to appear in the "Nintendo X Mario Kart Something" content pack, but in the end was replaced with Samus.
  • Some items were considered to be added but were later scrapped for several reasons:
    • Coins were originally going to be added as an item, but were scrapped due to changes in item balance. The coin was primarily added as a way to make 1st place worse, but due to the nerfs made to dragging items, it was decided that the coin was not needed anymore.
    • The Lucky Seven was originally going to be added as well, but was scrapped for unknown reasons, possibly due to balancing reasons. It would have acted similar to how it did in past games, but the Blooper would have been replaced with a Super Horn.
    • The Bob-Omb Cannon was also going to be included, but was replaced with Triple Bob-Ombs for unknown reasons.
    • Link and Zelda's original special item was the Triforce Piece, which would act similar to a Thunder Cloud but give Link and Zelda a powerful stat boost as long as they had it. However, it was scrapped as it seemed a bit too powerful. Later on it was replaced with a Hookshot, but because the creators realized it sort of broke the balancing, it was scrapped until the creators could figure out what to replace it with.
