Pokemon Horizon Logo
Pokémon Horizon is the beginning of the Pokémon series' ninth generation, releasing for the Nintendo Switch. This game flips the original formula on its head by making the switch from turn-based battles to fully-fledged 3D battles. The game takes place in the historic Avidi region, based on Italy, filled with beautiful architecture and stunning scenery. The traditional Gyms are swapped out for Coliseums, and the title of champion is replaced by Emperor or Empress.

Story[]

Setting[]

You're a 17 year old who's ready to start your Pokémon journey! You're from a small coastal town in the north of Avidi, and you've set your sights on the title of Emperor/Empress. In order to achieve this goal, you'll need to take on the numerous Coliseums dotted throughout the region, and defeat the Leader and their Gladiator.

Recently, the old Empress has had her title taken from her. A young man not much older than yourself is now Emperor, much to the dismay of the region's citizens. Rather than treating his Pokémon as friends and partners, the young Emperor uses them as nothing more than tools to win in battles.

Shortly after embarking on your journey, you meet the former Empress, who encourages you to pursue the title of Emperor/Empress, and gifts you with a special amulet. It seems she's also sponsored a young man named Beau from the neighbouring Kalos region, and Talia, the daughter of one of the region's professors.

Meanwhile, the sinister Team Masquerade are doing everything in their power to stop anybody pursuing the title of Emperor/Empress. Just what could they be up to?

Opening[]

The game begins with the player choosing their appearance, name, and birthday, while setting up their new Rotom Phone. You're sitting beside your mother, watching a news report on television. The newscaster talks briefly about the new Emperor - Ziore - how he treats his Pokémon, and the public outrage. She remarks that as a result, there has been an influx of Coliseum challengers. Your mother says that soon you'll be joining those challengers, and you'll be sure to win! She comments that she's never liked that Ziore guy.

The family Glameow steps on the remote, turning the TV off. Your mother takes it as a sign for you to get ready and meet the professors at their lab in the Uchello Vineyard. You grab your bag, say goodbye, and head out!

You run up the winding hill of Mantena, overlooking the ocean, and passing a series of vibrantly coloured houses. You pass through the gate at the top of town, and make your way to the professors' laboratory, a building resembling a barn, with a large greenhouse out back. Inside, you're greeted by a tall man in blue and a woman in red.

Professor Cypress: Ciao, trainer! Welcome to the wonderful world of the Avidi region! My name is Professor Matteo Cypress!

Professor Olive: And I'm Professor Naomi Olive. But please, just Olive is fine. Me and Cypress are research partners, sharing a lab just outside the town of Mantena.

Professor Cypress: I study how Pokémon react and battle in different environments. It's fascinating how uniquely Pokémon can behave when exposed to new conditions!

Professor Olive: My field of study is the relationship between humans and Pokémon. The bonds we form, how we grow alongside one another, and the ramifications of Pokémon in the workplace. Like me and Scrambles here!

Professor Cypress: And my little Mitzi! Of course, those are just their nicknames. We'll teach you more about the native Pokémon species later. It's a customary thing here in Avidi to nickname your partners.

Professor Olive: Oh, but you want to take on the Emperor's Challenge, don't you! The former Empress lives in Bellina, and she's eager to give out Amulets to potential challengers. My daughter, Talia, is over there right now getting her own.

Professor Cypress: My nephew, too! Ah, but I'm sure you'll meet them both in due time. If you're taking part in the challenge, I'll make sure you get an extra special battle! My husband is one of the Coliseum Leaders, see.

Professor Olive: It's a straight shot from the lab to Bellina. Meet up with Talia and Beau, get your Amulets, and come back here for a surprise!

After that warm welcome, you make your way to Bellina, the transport capital of Avidi. Once there, you reach a towering building where the fashion company NOVA have made their base.

Gameplay[]

Overworld[]

Pokémon Horizon draws heavily from the Wild Area in Pokémon Sword and Shield. As long as you're not indoors, you have full control of the camera. Other than this addition, exploration of towns and cities remains much the same as in previous titles.

The Avidi region features many Wild Areas - in fact, they replace traditional routes! Each Wild Area has its own boundaries, and landmarks that can be used as fast-travel points. For the most part, trainer and wild Pokémon levels will be scaled in accordance to the amount of Coliseums you've conquered. If you've got some underleveled Pokémon in your party, levels will be scaled to the average of the first 2 Pokémon in your party.

In the Wild Areas, the Pokémon in the first slot of your party will follow you around, sometimes picking up an item. Plain Bait can be used in the Wild Areas to attract wild Pokémon. You can also set up camp almost anywhere in the Wild Areas, to play with your Pokémon and cook with them. Once your campsite is set up, you can return to it at any time to heal your Pokémon. If you want to move it elsewhere, you'll have to pack it all up.

If you want to trade Pokémon or battle other trainers across the globe, you'll need to activate ConnectiSpace. Styled after social media sites like Instagram, ConnectiSpace allows you to keep in touch with your friends and update them on the latest in your Pokémon journey. You can also customise your trainer card from here, or send other players a like!

Battles[]

PokémonGoBattles-Hero

In a massive change of formula, Pokémon Horizon shakes up the battle system by having it take place on a grid inspired by the Fire Emblem, Pokémon Conquest and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, with elements from the battle system of Dungeons & Dragons tossed in. However, the traditional battle system is available in the postgame.

Every battle takes place on a grid of at least 5x5 tiles, with a minimum of 2 Pokémon on each side. Your goal remains the same; lower the enemy Pokémon's HP to 0 - though your objective might be different in some rare cases.

Every turn, you may move your Pokémon as many tiles as they can move, determined by their weight, speed, and status effects. A Pokémon's speed also determines their place in the turn order. Speedier Pokémon go first, while slower Pokémon go last, before repeating. In the event of speed stats being the same, a coin flip will be made.

Once you are in range of an enemy Pokémon, you can select a move to use. A Pokémon can know up to 4 moves at a time, with each move having its own range, power, accuracy, and PP. A move's range determines how far away from the target the user can be for this move to land, while power calculates how much damage the move will deal, taking into account the user's attack or special attack, and the opponent's defense or special defense. Accuracy determines if an attack will hit or miss. In turn with accuracy on moves, high speed on the user increases the likelihood of attacks landing, while high speed on a target increases the chances of the move missing. PP regulates how much a move can be used per battle. If your Pokémon's speed is double that of the opponent's, you can perform a follow-up attack at no extra PP cost. In addition, many moves have their own unique effects, and some can inflict status conditions.

You can also choose to use an item from your bag in place of a move. These range healing items, stat boosters, or even Pokéballs to catch wild Pokémon! Another option is to call back your Pokémon and send out another in their place. Any of these actions will end your turn. If you end a Pokémon's turn without performing an action, the Pokémon will brace themselves, reducing damage taken.

Every Pokémon has an ability that comes into play during battle. Abilities have a vast variety of effects on battle, and range from resisting certain types, creating weather conditions, to lowering enemy stats. In a similar vein, Pokemon are able to equip held items for use in battle, though only one at a time. A-Tracks will be rewarded to you by a clerk at any Pokémon center once your Pokémon reaches a designated level. These devices, resembling cassette tapes, can be used to assign up to 2 A-Track abilities to a Pokémon. These act as passive, less potent abilities, like giving a stat a slight boost or increasing resistance against a certain type of move.

As you move your Pokémon throughout the map to get an advantage over the enemy, it's important to note the effects of different tiles. Many tiles have unique effects like increasing evasiveness, boosting attacks of a certain type, or inflicting status effects. Some tiles can only be traversed by Pokémon of a certain type, or who hold certain properties. For instance, Water Pokémon can swim through rivers, while Flying Pokémon or those who can float can cross large gaps, and Ghost types can pass through non-hazardous walls. While on the map, you can also view the profiles of any Pokémon in the field. For enemy Pokémon, you can only see their stat boosts or debuffs, or type if you have battled them already. Once they use a move, held item, or ability, it will be marked down in their profile.

As your bonds with your Pokémon partners grow stronger, you'll reap benefits in battle. Pokémon with high friendship have a low chance of enduring a fatal blow or performing a follow-up attack even when their speed is outmatched. At any time during your turn, you can activate your Trainer Sync Ability, determined by your equipped amulet from the Coliseum challenge. These unique skills will give you the edge in battle, and their effectiveness increases as your bond with your Pokémon does too!

By connecting a second controller, battles will become multiplayer! If you have more than 6 Pokémon, the second player will be able to choose a team from the Boxes. Each payer controls their own Pokémon on their own turn. In a similar vein, the Battle Royal mode makes an appearance in some areas of the game.

amiibo Compatibility[]

Scanning in an amiibo figure by selecting the amiibo function in the ConnectiSpace interface will cause a wild, powered-up Pokémon to appear! What Pokémon it is varies from amiibo to amiibo, but each and every one comes with a special move or ability that the Pokémon can't normally learn. You can take on these Pokémon as many times as it takes to catch them, though no experience will be gained from defeating them. Scanning in a non-compatible amiibo or one whose Pokémon you've already caught will instead present you with a gift of money and some useful items.

Bold text denotes a unique move or ability.
