Super Smash Bros. Rave (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズR Great Fray Smash Brothers R) is the sixth installment of the Super Smash Bros. series and will be released for the Nintendo Switch in Autumn 2024.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay is similar to the previous installments. Rave includes two new mechanics and a returning one:
- Shield Burst: Pressing the attack button while shielding creates an explosion attack. Using this move is tricky however, as after performing a Shield Burst, the character will take recoil damage based on how big the shield was.
- Super Jump: While a character is crouching, the player may press the jump button, creating a jump that is higher than a double jump. As a downside, the player cannot double jump after performing a Super Jump.
- The gliding mechanic returns from Brawl, although it can only be performed for five seconds. Gliding works differently in Rave as opposed to Brawl, as the character will not enter their helpless state, allowing a potential recovery with their up special.
Controls[]
- A: Normal attack/Tilt attack
- B: Special move
- X/Y: Jump
- L/R: Grab
- ZL/ZR: Shield
- +/-: Pause
- Left control stick: Move
- Right control stick: Smash attack
- Control pad: Taunt
Modes[]
Smash[]
- Smash (1-8 Players): The main mode of the game, where up to 8 players can compete against each other in battle.
- Squad Strike: Players fight each other with a team of 3 or 5 characters.
- Tourney: Up to 32 players can compete in a elimination-styled tournament.
- Rotation: Assists players by rotating into and out of battles if there are more than four players.
- Special Smash: A battle with up to 8 players, but the player can add a few adjustments before the match begins.
Games & More[]
- Classic Mode: A single-player mode that can also be played via co-op. The player goes through various matches before reaching the boss, Master Hand. The player can adjust the difficulty from 0.0 to 9.0, as with Smash 4 and Ultimate. Unlike the latter, the Classic Mode for Rave goes back to the random opponent format used in Melee and both versions of Smash 4. However, the number of stages are dependent on the intensity chosen. Unlockable characters will not appear until they are unlocked. DLC characters and their stages will appear once they have been downloaded into the game.
Intensities 0.0-2.9[]
Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | Bonus Round | Round 4 | Final Round |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Normal | Normal | Team | Target Smash | Giant | Master Hand |
Intensities 3.0-5.9[]

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Normal | Team | Target Smash | Normal | Multi | Team | Race to the Finish | Giant | Master Hand and Crazy Hand |
Intensities 6.0-9.0[]

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Normal | Team | Normal | Giant | Target Smash | Multi | Normal | Metal | Race to the Finish | Free for All (three opponents) | Master Hand and Crazy Hand, then Master Mask |
- All-Star Mode: The player is pitted against every single playable character (aside from the Mii Fighters). Each fight is put into distinct rounds, and after a fight is over, the player can explore a rest area with a limited number of recovery items during rounds. Each character is ordered by their first appearance in Japan. Like Classic Mode, DLC characters (highlighted in italic) will appear once they have been downloaded into the game.

- Adventure Mode: Rise of the Zedians: The single-player story mode of Rave. The plot revolves around the World of Trophies being invaded by a group of aliens known as the Zedians. In order to stop them, the Smashers team up with an amnesiac fairy who has a strong connection to the Zedians.
- Smash Wave: Up to four players can participate in this mode, where they must work together to defeat hordes of enemies, both from Rise of the Zedians as well as enemies from franchises represented in this game.
- Training: The player can practice the overall gameplay as well as experiment with the CPU.
- Table Smash: The player can participate in a series of challenges to collect cards, a collectible based on trading card games. Cards are similar to Stickers in Brawl, Equipment in Smash 4 and Spirits in Ultimate. Unlike the latter, cards do not play a major role during the Rise of the Zedians, although they can still be collected and used in the mode.
- Multi-Man Smash: The player must defeat a certain of number of the Fighting Elemental Team. The player can chose one of the following ways to play:
- 10-Man Smash: Up to 10 Fighting Elementals must be defeated, with the last character being the character that the player is using.
- 100-Man Smash: 100 Fighting Elementals must be defeated, and various characters from the roster will make an appearance as opponents.
- 15 Minute Smash: The player must defeat as many Fighting Elementals before they are defeated or when the timer runs out.
- Endless Smash: Fighting Elementals respawn endlessly, so the player must defeat as many as they can.
- Rival Smash: Under a time limit, the player has to score more points than the CPU opponent.
- Cruel Smash: All of the Fighting Elementals have their AI maxed out, making this mode rather difficult.
- Target Smash: The player must break all 10 targets that are scattered throughout in an arena as fast as possible.
- Home-Run Contest: The player must use the Home-Run Bat to hit the Sandbag to a certain distance.
- Race to the Finish: Set in a labyrinthine corridor, the player must reach the end of the stage to reach a certain record.
- Boss Battles: A boss rush mode, where the player fights all bosses from Rise of the Zedians. After a boss has been defeated, they will be placed in the same rest area from All-Star Mode after defeating a boss.
- Mii Fighter: Mii Fighters can be created and customized.
- Amiibo: The player can create a fighter based on the amiibo figure that was used. Like Ultimate, if the amiibo figure used is not based on a fighter, then it will give a trophy of the character instead.
- Stage Builder: Custom stages can be created by the player and can be used for Smash matches. They can also be uploaded online.
- Challenger's Approach: If the player has lost a battle against an unlockable character, they can visit this mode for a second chance to unlock them. Once all characters have been unlocked, the mode is longer accessible.
Online[]
- Smash: Players from across the globe can play in a standard Smash match. Alongside the other online modes, rollback netcode has been implemented, powered by GGPO.

- Online Tourney: Players can participate in online tournament. At certain times, the tourney will have a certain theme to along with it as with Ultimate.

Fighters[]
Nine characters have been cut from the previous series, as unlike Ultimate, the previous installment, Rave is not focused on bringing every character back. Echo fighters have been de-emphasized as well. To compensate for this, new characters have been added to the roster, this time with more characters from new series as opposed to returning characters. Trivia[]
- The game's original title was meant to be Super Smash Bros. Revolt, but it was changed to Rave.
- This is the second installment to be co-developed by Monolith Soft since Brawl.
- Rave is the first ever installment to use rollback netcode, as it was considered for Ultimate but was cut for unknown reasons.
- Not counting the Virtual Console release of the first Smash on the Wii, Rave is the first game in the series to be released on the same platform alongside its predecessor, Ultimate.
- Euden from Dragalia Lost was considered to be playable, but he was scrapped as his game wasn't released in certain parts of the world and the game's servers were shut down in 2022. As a result, he only appears as a trophy and a card.
- An additional character from Arc System Works was considered, however this never came in fruition due to limited DLC space.
- Jin was meant to be the second Tekken character but was replaced by Heihachi, as Sakurai had finally made a moveset for the latter.
- Champion Zelda was meant to be an alternate costume for Zelda, but the former was made into a standalone character due to her uniqueness.
