Gameplay[]
Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Phantasma is a a traditional 2D fighter in which two characters participate in a duel. To win a round, one player must either beast the other by doing damage through various attacks to reduce their opponent's health to zero or by having more remaining health than their opponent after the clock runs out. Every character has a weak, medium and strong attack, as well as an "unique" technique, called a genesis attack, which is different for each character.
Through button combinations, characters are able to perform a series of special attacks as well as defend themselves for some time. The strongest attack is the "Sonic Hit" which can immediately defeat the opponent if the attack connects correctly. Some attacks can also have status elements which male the opponent suffers damage over time.
In addition, the player is given unlimited use of the "Chaos Combo Gauge", a small colored meter towards the bottom of the screen which allows the player to perform several special techniques, allowing them to pull off multiple cmbos, moves which deliver rather heavy damage to the opponent.
Occasionally, some attacks will use portions of the player's boom gauge at the bottom of the screen. The boom gauge is filled by either dealing or receiving damage. When a character has 60% of this, special moves called "Mega Drives" can be performed.
When a Mega Drive is successfully performed and connects with the opponent, it deals massive damage and is flashier than normal attacks. When the character has low life left, they enter into an "Awakening Mode" which refills the SP Gauge and increases the character's defense.
The player can pick two strikers from the game's roster to help tehm out during battle, these have a smsll bar that must be filled to use them.
The player can pick up the Chaos Emeralds during the match, getting all of them will let them go in to his or her superform for a brief amount of time.
