Super Smash Bros. Reset is a 2025 fighting game developed by Nintendo EAD, Namco Bandai Games and Sora Ltd, with assistance of third-parties studios such as Project RESET Team and Stardust Citadel. The game is a follow up of 2018's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the last game to be directed by series creator Masahiro Sakurai. It is intended to be released to Nintendo's currently unnamed next-gen console.

Development

2022
At E3 2022, Sakurai revealed during the last years of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that a new title, dubbed a "Reboot" of the series, was being developed. It raised eyebrows to multiple fans to what exactly will happen to the roster of characters that was previously in Ultimate.
2023
	In a December 2023 Nintendo Direct, a new teaser trailer was shown off, revealing the perfect attendance crew (Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu) in a stylised trailer referencing Smash 64's opening, before swiftly cutting to Melee veteran Marth, Brawl veteran Pit, Smash 4 veteran Villager, Ultimate veteran Inkling and a new character, Spring Man, be revealed all at once. The game was then renamed to Super Smash Bros. Reset, refrencing the reboot of the series shown in the gameplay.
2024
	Over the course of Janurary to March 2024, the official website confirmed the veterans Peach, Zelda, Robin, King Dedede, Olimar, Pokémon Trainer and Ness would be rejoining the battle.
	After the success of the Wonderful 101 ports for the Nintendo Switch, Steam and Playstation 4, Wonder Red joins the fight with Meta Knight and Captain Falcon alongside in the trailer. The site soon had been updated with the characters.
	Captain Toad and Luigi were revealed in April to advertise the newest Mario title on the Next-Gen system. The Mii Fighters were also confirmed to be coming back at the end of the trailer.
	In the Super Smash Bros. Reset Direct at May 17th, 2024, a barrage of information revealed itself, revealing the veterans Little Mac, Falco, Wario, Shulk and Ike. Impa would be revealed at the beginning of the direct and Chibi-Robo at the end. Interviews state that a lot of the veterans were simply ported from Smash Ultimate with a bunch of changes, which lead to the possibility of adding everyone into the game from Ultimate a likely one.
	At E3 2024 held on June 10th, Rillaboom was revealed along with Byleth and Bowser, as well as the rebooted character Toon Link in a small mini direct. SEGA's Sonic was accidentally revealed upon the demo version of the game.
	Soon after, an official reveal trailer of Sonic was revealed. From July to September onward, the veterans Ice Climbers, Diddy Kong, Greninja, Wii Fit Trainer and Capcom's Mega Man were confirmed to return.
	At the end of the October Nintendo Direct held on the 17th, a teaser was shown for a Golden Sun remake, which lead to a Isaac joining the battle shortly after the reveal, also revealing Sheik and Namco's PAC-MAN in trailer footage.
2025
	From November to January the following year, 2025, Dixie Kong, Lyn, Krystal and Bandana Dee were revealed over time, with a trailer made for two characters each to show a true crossover of worlds, hinting at a story mode of sorts by fans.
	The second Super Smash Bros. Reset Direct, held in Febuary 3rd, details were mostly about the game itself, mechanics, and stages. However, the beginning character trailer revealed yet another dual universe trailer, this time featuring veteran Zero Suit Samus and newcomer Sylux, as well as veteran Palutena and newcomer Viridi to advertise Kid Icarus: Wingfall. At the end of the Direct, Konami's own Bomberman was revealed, upgraded from Assist Trophy just like Isaac earlier.
Before the second Smash Bros. Reset Direct, credible leaker Vergeben returned to the scene to predict a Metroid represenative in light of the success of Metroid Prime 4: Hope of the Earth, as well as shockingly throwing in a Kid Icarus represenative and a Konami represenative. From the last events of Smash Ultimate, his words were dry with the community, but it quickly turned itself around.
	Things got quiet from here out. At April 1st, the Balloon Fighter was revealed, and shortly following on April 18th would have Incineroar.
	As it was nearing E3, with a planned "final direct" on the horizon of speculation, a former Nintendo employee leaked what was assumed to be a test build of the game, which had several batches of gameplay footage including Mother's Ninten, and veteran Ryu. It was assumed to be faked or modded in with the stage in question being once again Moray Towers as was the iconic Ken leak.
	At the final direct, held at E3 - June the 15th - Ninten and Ryu were officially revealed in a sort of self aware trailer. The trailer also confirmed Ubisoft's Rayman and SQUARE ENIX's Hero from Ultimate, both of whom were recieved in surprise by both ends of the Smash Community. It was also revealed that Geno would be the very first DLC character in the Fighter's Pass of the game.
Shortly after release, the Unlockable Characters were discovered as they were kept tight lipped this time around. The reasoning for the challengers will be listed below.
	Chrom, Corrin, Daisy, Duck Hunt, Mr. Game and Watch, Isabelle, Bowser Jr., Lucario, Lucas, Mewtwo, Min Min, Jigglypuff, Pyra & Mythra, Ridley, R.O.B., Rosalina & Luma and Wolf were all ported from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. "Some of these characters have been finished since we first revealed the game as Reset." Sakurai tells in a Famitsu interview. Partially, Isabelle was added due to the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which she even sports a new costume from.
	Ganondorf, Dr. Mario, Young Link, Roy, Dark Pit, Dark Samus and Ken are known officially as REBOOT fighters now. While they were somewhat ported from Ultimate, these characters share little differences with their based off counterparts, or play much different than them. Capcom gave Ken the thumbs up he needed. (Heh.)
	Octoling and Slippy & Peppy's inclusion were made as Echo Fighters for Inkling, Fox and Falco respectively at the middle of development before Project Reset pushed for REBOOT characters. They were changed up on over time to act unique but familiar to their counterparts.
	Alph was initially going to be Olimar's alternate costume once again, but Sakurai wanted to give Alph some unique flair with some old moves from Brawl and Rock Pikmin being part of his arsenal.
	Pichu initially was going to rejoin the roster, but was turned into newcomer duo Plusle and Minun. They share Pichu's attributes but perform different moves to Pikachu. There's even Pichu and Spiky Ear Pichu alternate costumes to show this.
	Takamaru, Mach Rider, Lip, Ray MKIII, Tap Troupe, Saki - to further empasise on Nintendo's long history back in the day. They were given the greenlight on the original developers.
	Midna, Skull Kid, Fi - to embrace the long history of The Legend of Zelda series and the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.
	Tiki, Waluigi, Chandelure, Toy-Con Robot - initially started as jokes, but Bandai or Project Reset liked the idea so much they put them in. "Waluigi has been an Assist Trophy since he first joined in Brawl." Sakurai says. "I initally had no idea how to make him work, but Bandai and Reset put their heads together and... magic happened."
	Samurai Goroh, Porky, Tails, Monster Hunter - "giving love" to franchises they considered "lacking" from Ultimate. Tails and Monster Hunter were given the all clear from SEGA, Sonic Team and Capcom respectively.
	Medusa, Akira, Marx - The successes of recent titles - Kid Icarus: Wingfall, Astral Chain -Reloaded- and Kirby: Superstar Saga HD for the next gen console and Nintendo Switch.
	2B, Banjo & Kazooie, Bayonetta, Cloud, Dante, Joker, Kazuya, Lloyd, Sephiroth, Simon, Snake, Terry - Friendly third party devs, or just "pure luck" as a Reset developer puts it as.
A few weeks after release, the "Geno patch" releases. It fixed multiple bugs, and had small balance changes for the cast.
2026
	In January 12th, 2026, Richter was revealed as Fighter #2 for Fighter's Pass 1. "Fans dearly missed Richter, and were very vocal about him not being in the main roster, like Waluigi was in Ultimate." Sakurai says in a interview. "We had him in the cards for a while, but we could not finish him in time for release." Later that day, he was added with Patch 2.0.
	In March, Reimu from the Touhou series was revealed. In June, after EVO, Doom Slayer was revealed. In September, Beat from Jet Set Radio was revealed. In November, in the middle of the Game Awards, Minecraft's Steve was revealed as the final character in the first Fighter's Pass who was another fan-demanded favourie from the previous game. A second one was revealed shortly thereafter.
	December 2026's Nintendo Direct teased Activision's Crash Bandicoot as Fighter 7, the first on the second Fighter's Pass.
2027
	In Febuary 2027, Lucina was revealed for release alongside Crash, and a teaser of Chris was shown. April that same year confirmed Chris. In June, Gardevoir and Sora were leaked by yet the same former Nintendo employee from the Ryu/Ninten leak earlier, with both being confirmed a month later, but Sora was delayed to October due to "technical difficulties". The same month, the final DLC character of Fighter Pack 2, Monita from Wii U title Nintendo Land, was confirmed as a joint release with him.
On Christmas Day, December 2027, Nintendo announced the Super Smash Bros. Reset Character Ballot, after being absent in Ultimate for unknown reasons. Fans would be able to vote for their favourite characters.
Just as suddenly, Nintendo also revealed a spin off title first appearing on Arcade Machines and later a Nex-Gen Online exclusive. This would later be formally revealed as Super Smash Bros. Reset: Arcade Edition, or "Lite Edition" on the Nintendo E-Shop Page.
2028
	In January in 2028, Fighter Passes 3 was revealed, and was said to be "handled differently" than most other Fighter's Passes. Namco and Project Reset had these characters on the backburner and in some files since Patch 7.1, which had WayForward's Shantae, YachtClub Game's Shovel Knight and Microsoft's Rash in the game's parameter files, discovered by modders TNN and Arthur.
	At the end of EVO 2028, held in June once again, Nintendo revealed the three characters, but also Tetra, Black Mage and fan-favourite Piranha Plant were teased, soon being released in September the same year. In November, Fighter's Pass 4 was revealed to be handled in a similar as the third.
2029
	In January 2029, Ring Fit Trainer, Klonoa and Ristar were teased on the Smash Bros. website, Ring Fit releasing in Febuary, Klonoa in April, and Ristar in June. Nintendo held a "Final, Final Direct" on the title in September, which revealed Phoenix, Spyro and ArcSystem Work's Sol. They were also teased of the winners in the Character Ballot, which was now closed after two years of suggestions.
	Three characters during the span of January to December were added into the game as bonuses for the Fighters Packs, which include many "forgotten" DLC stages from the 64 era and beyond. These characters were Capcom's Amaterasu, WayForward and ArcSystem Work's River City Girls and Shonen Jump's Goku.
	December finally revealed who these challengers are: Toby Fox's Sans, Studio MDHR's Cuphead, Paper Mario, NetherRealm's Scorpion, SEGA's Dr. Eggman & Magolor, finally completing the game after nearly a decade in development.

Tier List

The Tier List for Super Smash Bros. Reset can be found here. It was organised by the Smash Back Room on Smashboards, who were quiet before Patch 9.0, which was before the Fighter's Pass was fully revealed. It was agreed that 2B, Joker and Meta Knight were "Top 3".

Stages

While it's confirmed that not all stages will return from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, some new stages were added to represent the newer games, Nintendo's History and home stages for newcomers. Battlefield and Omega forms return as well as Custom Stages. All stages have Hazardless forms (some notably improved from Ultimate) and work in 8 Player Smash.

	Debut: Donkey Kong (1981)
	Unlockable stage.
	This big, creative and dangerous stage is a homage to the Arcade hit Donkey Kong, which got released to the Famicom - or NES - a bit later. Much like the platformer, you can traverse through the platforms, climb ladders, collect items, avoid the Podobos, and even classic Donkey Kong can pop from the background and command Springs to come and attack you through falling down! Whatever the case, it's a crazy ride regardless.

	Available from the start.
	The traditional stage for Smash combat, balanced to provide different positions that fits each character's playstyles. The stage is relatively unchanged from its previous interations, with only visual differences to set it apart from the other Battlefields in the franchise. The lack of hazards makes this stage perfectly suitable for real showcases of skill.

Assist Trophies

The Assist Trophy is an item introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl that, when picked up, breaks open and summons a random Nintendo or third-party character to aid the user. The following below is a list of available assist trophies in the game. While some fan-favourites didn't make it, fans can always consider them in the game as Assist Trophies... as much as they do not want to.

Modes

Super Smash Bros. Reset has a wide variety of modes to play. Here is a description of some of them.

All Star Mode

Much like Smash Bros. Wii U, this is a mode where you survive the entire roster as you go through series history. However, like Brawl, they're organised by series or by category. Fighters that are in a large series may be split into two different categories. (ie: Pokemon 1-4, Pokemon 5-8). Here is a table discussing each appearance.
