Super Smash Toons is the spin-off and fifth installment of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, developed by Bandai Namco Studios and GDL Game Studios, and published by Nintendo. Unlike the previous installments, which featured a cast of Nintendo characters, the game features an entirely new cast, focusing on characters from popular animated television programs, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Steven Universe, etc.
The game was first released for the Wii U console on November 25, 2016 in North America, and is expected for release in Japan in February 2017.
An enhanced Nintendo Switch port will be released worldwide on June 2017, titled as Super Smash Toons: Remastered.
Gameplay[]
Like the previous installments, the gameplay Super Smash Toons is a 4-player fighting platformer where the player must launch opponents off the screen. The damage is based on the percentage (%) number, indicating how much a fighter has taken. And the larger the number (e.g. 100%), the more damage taken, the fighter could be launched farther off the screen.
Changes made from Super Smash Bros.[]
- The primary fighter line up is entirely cartoon characters.
- Sound effects are more "comical" and "cartoonish".
- Screen KO's have also changed; if the player knocks out an opponent upward, the frame will freeze for a second, and then the launched opponent gets sent right onto the screen.
- The announcer is female, voiced by Hellena Taylor.
- After the countdown before the battle begins, the announcer will shout "FIGHT!" instead of "GO!".
- Similarly, if the game ends during a stock battle, the announcer will shout "KO!" or "
- More details to come...
Amiibo usage[]
The game will have support for the Amiibo figures. The compatible line-up includes Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Samus, Fox, Yoshi, and Pikachu, whom are all veterans of the original Super Smash Bros. title. After tapping the compatible amiibo, the player can have a chance of unlocking the character based on the amiibo figure the player has tapped. The player can choose the desired character to use, and then they will be challenged to a match. In order to unlock the new fighter, the player must beat the character and win the match, similar to unlocking new characters, which is also present in this game. If the player wins, the character they tapped the amiibo of joins the game's roster, plus new stages based on the character's game. However, the amiibo character's AI is very high, which makes unlocking an amiibo fighter difficult. In "DLC Shop", the player can also use a compatible amiibo figure to get discounts on new content, depending on what figure is scanned.
In the Nintendo Switch version, all the Amiibo-unlockable fighters will be available as starter fighters, meaning they're officially in-game fighters. The Amiibo function will also be different on the Switch version, as well as other features changed within the console port.
