Super Smash Bros. Legacy is the sixth entry in the Super Smash Bros. Franchise (seventh if you're a real person and count Smash for 3DS & Wii U as two separate entities). Unlike past entries, this game was made by an entirely new studio (Switch X Studios).

Gameplay[]

In Super Smash Bros. Legacy, things continue to be the way they have always been in the way that players seek to knock opponents off the stage. Characters have a damage total, represented by a percentage value, which rises as they take damage (shown as a percent, not able to exceed 999.99%). As characters' percentages rise, they can be knocked progressively further by an opponent's attacks. To KO an opponent, the player must send their opponent flying off the edge of the stage, which is not an enclosed arena but rather an area with open boundaries, usually a set of suspended platforms. When a character is knocked off the stage, they may try and recover by jumping or using various attacks that may help them to gain height.

Changes between Ultimate & Legacy:

  • The character select screen now appears before the stage select screen, although this can be swapped around under settings.
  • Older characters are receiving "new" movesets, with the goal being to include more of their history and modernize them without taking too much away from how they originally were.
  • Several characters that were deemed in the past as "clones" or "echoes" are now being changed to be (at the very least) slightly more original.
  • All characters are now slightly less "floaty" (calculated to be by approximately 0.5%)
  • All characters now have what are called "backhand attacks" where they can quickly break from a combo to attack whoever may be behind them, without breaking stride. However, failing to land it can leave them open to both opponents, and landing it can give the first opponent a chance to get away.
  • All characters how have new special attacks refereed to as "Shield Specials" where they press the special attack and shield button at once. These types of moves are usually counters or other moves that can act as such, but not always. These moves require the character to be on the ground, as this cannot be done in the air.

Trailers[]

For the full list of trailers, see here. Otherwise, here is the reveal trailer.

It starts out with a father returning home with a box of mystery items. He sees his son playing a video game (the likes of which are never shown), and the father asks his son to come and make some worlds with him. So they do. They start using Nintendo Labo to make all sorts of cool creations, with a certain cardboard figure with a Joy Con on his back being set on a shelf to watch over their creations. By the end of a short yet sweet montage, it is revealed that among their creations with Labo, they created a cardboard Smash Ball.

(this music starts playing.)

It then cuts to a scene where it shows Mario jump past the Super Mario logo and land in front of a red backdrop with Peach, Luigi, and Bowser all waiting for him. It cuts to Link slicing through the Legend of Zelda logo and joining Zelda, Sheik, and Toon Link on a green backdrop. It cuts to The Pokémon Trainer throws a Poké Ball at the Pokémon logo, dropping a Squirtle next to Pikachu on a yellow backdrop, with Lucario and Incineraor already there as well. It cuts to Kirby inhales the Kirby logo on a pink backdrop, with Meta Knight and King Dedede appearing behind him. It then cuts to Samus and Fox firing at the Metroid and Star Fox logos respectively, being joined by Zero Suit Samus and Falco on a navy backdrop. Finally, it cuts to Marth and Pit slicing through the Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus logos respectively (on a sky blue backdrop) and then meeting in the center to fight, Marth being backed-up by Ike and Chrom and Pit being backed up by Palutena and Dark Pit.

It then cuts to a scene with the Nintendo Switch against a purple backdrop and Super Smash Bros Ultimate' logo on the screen. Then, a bunch of characters then break out of the Switch, and then rush to get to the TV, which contains the Super Smash Bros. Legacy logo. It then shows a montage of gameplay, showing off several of the characters' changes as well as revealing new and returning stages. The montage ends with the reveal of the stage Labo Factory, which has Mario, Samus, and Kirby fighting. Mario sends the other two flying away and then taunts with a thumbs up. Suddenly, he gets a Joy Con flung at him from behind. The Joy Con then flies back to the hands of the thrower, revealing Labo Man!

The trailer then shows a montage of Labo Man and his moveset, finishing of with his Final Smash: Robot Toycon Punch! Finally, the trailer ends with the logo.
