Super Mario Bros.: One Last Life is a title for the Nintendo Hypercube and one game being developed by Nintendo and GD Gaming Studios as part of a contract. It features Mario and his friends from the past "generation" attempting to stop Bowser after a mishap involving traveling to the past and 1-Up Mushroms. It plays very similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series, but with some key differences.
The game is planned to be currently available on the E-Shop for a certain period to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Mario, on July 19, 1981, and will be released July 19, 2016. A retail package featuring a download code for the game and a random Mario series amiibo is also planned for release alongside the digital version, and will be available in limited supplies only.

Story[]
Bowser prepares a plan to steal Princess Peach, and travels alongside his son to the past in order to steal all of the 1-Up Mushrooms. After returning to the present, Bowser initiates his plan by whisking away Peach, and while a band of heroes led by Mario does give chase, they are eventually defeated and have no way of coming back. With Bowser's plan a success, he begins to spread his empire across the lands, but little does he realize that he actually brought back Mario and a few other heros from the past into the current times...
As the heroes slowly advance throughout the castle, they learn more and more about Bowser's next plan, being to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom and Peach's Castle with an undefeatable amount of troops, and how he plans to do so - using 1-Up Mushrooms mutated by Viruses to clone himself and his army. Eventually, after defeating all of Bowser's strongest minions, they reach the very top of the castle. After taking on an army of clones as well as destroying the Viruses, Bowser is eventually confronted.
Bowser utilizes the power of 1-Up Mushrooms to give himself multiple lifes, setting up a multiple-phase battle. After Bowser's last life is depleted, he uses all of the corrupted 1-Up Mushroom to clone himself and his son: Bowser absorbs his clones and becomes a powerful monster known as Infinite Bowser. Mario and the other heroes climb to the very top of the tallest tower in Bowser's Empire, surviving through waves of attacks set off by Infinite Bowser and the Infinite Bowser Jrs. until the Koopa King is finally cornered. From there, one last blessing from Peach provides Mario enough power to defeat Bowser and recover the 1-Up Mushrooms.
With the remaining untouched Mushrooms recovered, the protagonists from the pasts use them to bring back Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and many others from the present time. After a brief meeting, Bowser's time machine is used to take the heroes back to their original time. The credits roll, and it is eventually revealed that the plot was a movie shown in Bowser's "Theater" (the ruins of his Empire) to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary.
Gameplay[]
One Last Life combines some common elements of the classic and modern Mario games, while getting rid of others for newer ideas. In terms of platforming gameplay, the controls are mostly similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series, with players being able to perform basic functions such as running, jumping, ducking, wall kicking, and ground pounding, though some previously 3D-only moves such as backflips have been added in.
One of the big changes in this game is, quite obviously, the life system. Since there is no 1-Up Mushrooms in sight, players must make sure not to lose their one life or it'll be an automatic game over. To counter this, players have access to 4 different characters to control rather than just Mario, and one can be switched out to play as another at any point of time. Each character has their own unique advantages and disadvantages. The team of 4 is Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Yoshi. All of the characters also share a health bar, with the exception of one character. Because there is no way to gain lives, getting 100 Coins will refill the health of your characters rather than granting you another life.
Princess Peach is also a large center of the game, as she is a partner that is always traveling with the player. Princess Peach holds a special power known as Toadstool's Blessing. Peach's Toadstool's Blessing is a magic power that has many uses, and it is vital for keeping the characters alive and able to continue on their journey. In multiplayer, players that choose Peach must be protected by the others so that she does not die, as otherwise there would be no way to complete the level.
Toadstool's Blessing has three basic functions. For one, it can heal characters and undo any negative effects placed onto them. Peach has a meter that displays how much of this power she can use on characters, and it only resets when entering a level or passing a special Gold Checkpoint. Toadstool's Blessing's second use is one that differs in every level, but often times ends up being something that is required to continue on. For example, in a level with Flipswitch platforms, Toadstool's Blessing may flip the platforms that are facing up, while in a level that has very little platforms for crossing, it might enable zero-gravity swimming. This type of Toadstool's Blessing is usable as many times as needed. The last type is only available in multiplayer, where players who are controlling Peach can use it to teleport directly to another player if they ever get lost.
Another large change is the way that levels are integrated. Rather than having a world connecting levels together, every level is grouped together in one large central area simply titled Bowser's Empire. There is a world map activated by pressing the start button that allows you to quickly warp to the entrance of any levels you have already entered. Even though all the levels are found together, worlds still exist to an extent as every level in one "area", or world, must be completed to unlock the doors that lead to the next part of the castle.
Power-ups also make an appearance in the game, but work slightly differently. They are a lot less common, and up to 3 of them can be equipped on characters at once through an inventory, allowing for players to switch between different power ups when necessary. They are also a lot more integrated into the levels than before, and sometimes are needed to progress through a level.
Characters[]
Playable[]
Character | Special Ability | Advantages / Disadvantages | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Mario |
Mario is the master of the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, or F.L.U.D.D. It sprays water that can push back and possibly defeat enemies, and also has enough force to propel Mario when spraying behind or below him. Mario can rotate the nozzle around so that it sprays in different directions quickly, rather than using nozzles. |
| ||
Luigi |
Luigi is the master of the Scuttle Jump. Holding the jump button allows for Luigi to hover in the air for a short time before slowly descending, which is great for crossing gaps. With the Scuttle Jump, Luigi can also walk on water. |
| ||
Toad |
Toad is the master of the Pluck. Some enemies that act as platforms for other characters can be picked up with ease by Toad. After picking an enemy up, Toad can then throw these enemies as ammunition against other bad guys or carry them as a shield from above attacks. |
| ||
Yoshi |
Yoshi is the master of the Flutter Jump. Holding the jump button will have Yoshi muster up the strength to fly a little higher, allowing him to reach higher up platforms. Yoshi will, however, quickly lose his momentum when performing a Flutter Jump. |
| ||
Peach |
Peach is the master of the Toadstool's Blessings. Peach can use three different kind of blessings: a blessing that heals her and anyone near her, a blessing that activates an event in a level, and a blessing that lets her teleport to any other players nearby. |

Antagonists[]
For boss fight descriptions, see Super Mario Bros.: One Last Life/Boss Battles.
Character | Description | Role | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Bowser |
The King of Koopas's latest scheme successfully defeats Mario, but comes at the cost of his son's life. After a travel to the past, Bowser accidentally gives the Mario of before a chance at saving the kingdom, but he won't be having any of that. | Main antagonist of the game. Bowser is fought as the final boss of the game, in 8-4. | ||
Bowser Jr. |
Following Bowser Jr.'s death in the present, Bowser enters the past to recover his son, who seems to know everything that happens. After the sacrifice his father made to save himself, Jr. will make sure that Mario pays for all that he has done. | Secondary antagonist of the game until Bowser is defeated. Bowser Jr. then revives and controls Bowser, fighting alongside him as the final boss of the game, in 8-4. | ||
Viruses |
Nasty viruses crafted by Bowser to internally destroy 1-Up Mushrooms and other similar items, so that Mario could never reach them. They have no sense of good or bad; only to destroy. | A driving force of the game's story. Mario enters the virus-creating machine and takes on the Viruses in the penultimate boss fight of the game, in Virus Factory. | ||
Clone Army |
Bowser has used the extra 1-Up Mushrooms to create evil doppelgangers of the friendly heroes. They're not out to stop Bowser and stomp on baddies - their sole purpose is to make sure Mario and the others don't go any further! | The Clone Army is the main focus of the Carbon Facility in World 8, as a horde of these clones appear as the boss of that level. They are the only new enemy in the game. | ||
Boom Boom |
A high-ranking minion of Bowser, Boom Boom is well known for always coming back and trying to stop Mario. Among the other members of the Koopa Troop, he gets his name from the thundering sounds his fists make while he's training. | One of Bowser's top henchman. He is fought in the multiple batallion levels of the game. | ||
Pom Pom |
A newer member of the Koopa Troop who has quickly become a commander of Bowser's army thanks to her supreme knowledge of weapons like boomerangs and shurikens. She's extremely loyal and will do whatever it takes to please Bowser, even going as far as to kill Mario. | One of Bowser's top henchman. She is fought in the multiple airship levels of the game. | ||
Reznor |
Reznor are a very dangerous species that is native to Dinosaur Land; only someone as evil as Bowser could import and train them without a problem. They might not be the smartest, but they're very brave and will even sacrifice the very ground they walk on to defeat Mario. | One of Bowser's top henchman. He is fought in the multiple fortress levels of the game. | ||
Kamek |
Kamek has been Bowser's caretaker ever since he was young, always trying to make sure he would be the perfect ruler. When Bowser is so close to finally conquering the Mushroom Kingdom, Kamek will pull out all the stops he can at his old age to make sure Mario doesn't interfere. | One of Bowser's top henchman. He is fought in the multiple castle levels of the game. | ||
Motley Bossblob |
Motley may look like a tiny jester Koopa, but his silly look hides a menacing demeanor and a very dangerous power: with the help of an army of blob-like creatures, he can transform into a giant clown monster known as "Motley Bossblob". | One of Bowser's top henchman. He is fought in the multiple dome levels of the game. |
Supporting[]
Character | Description | Role | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Toad |
The poor Toads have been shocked by Mario's disappearance. Some of the braver Toads attempted to take on Bowser for revenge, but were captured by his troops instead. | Multiple Toads can be found in every level, and freeing them will allow you to talk to them. Toads can provide tips, items, or a quick line of funny dialogue to brighten the mood. | ||
Baby Yoshi |
The Yoshis, being a close ally of Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom, tried to defend themselves from the Koopa Troop, but were captured. These Baby Yoshis managed to sneak into the castle looking for food. | Baby Yoshis of all colors can be found in some areas, and they can be carried in order to have them gobble enemies. They do not have special abilities in this game. |

Enemies[]
Enemies in this game are split into multiple groups classified in an "Enemycyclopedia", which records data about a type of enemy once you encounter it.
Goombas[]
Goombas are the basic foot soldiers of Bowser's army and come in all sorts of shape and sizes. They are recognizable by their small frames, predictable attack patterns, and low health - most are defeated by a single stomp on the head.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Goomba |
The most basic of them all, Goombas are some of the bravest soldiers you'll ever find. Charging forward as they spot an enemy, they'll keep moving on even through dangers like bottomless pits and lava. They may be weak, but they believe in themselves. Thank you for your sacrifices, Goomba. | ||
Paragoomba |
Paragoombas are the results of giving a Goomba wings to fly with. The problem? Paragoombas don't know how to fly. They'll hop around, occasionally leaping up into the air, but that's it. One jump will only take off the wings, but a ground pound can defeat a paragoomba instantly. | ||
Grand Goomba |
Mega Goombas are one of the only Goombas that can't be defeated with a single attack. Rather, bouncing on their heads splits them into 3 smaller Goombas that can be taken out individually. It's kinda gross seeing them just pop out like that... | ||
Goombeetle |
Goombeetles wear huge protective helmets on their head that give them some extra defense...as well as limit their exposure to the sun. You have to flip them upside down with an item before you can jump on them, but otherwise, they're normal Goombas. | ||
Galoomba |
Galoombas are round Goombas that cannot be defeated with a stomp, but they can be stunned for a short time. You can kick them around, though, which is great for attacking enemies. I've heard Galoomba Soccer is a favorite sport far away... | ||
Goombrat |
They're uglier-looking Goombas that turn around when they reach a ledge. That's all there is to them. Hurry up and read about the next enemy already, that face is freaking me out. | ||
Bone Goomba |
Bone Goombas certainly look slightly more menacing with those skull hats, glowing eyes, and sickly blue color, but they're more of a decorated Goomba than a new species. It's a shame, honestly... | ||
Goomba Skates |
Goomba Skates are mostly found around cold areas where they use the ice to their advantage. Those large skates sure are great for chasing you across the frozen floors at high speeds, but if you can get them onto other terrain, they'll lose their control and instead slowly hop after you. |
Koopas[]
Koopas are one of the main species found in Bowser's army, which make sense considering that he himself is a type of Koopa. Koopas are instantly recognizable by the shells they wear, and while most of them cannot be defeated by a jump, they do provide some sort of ammo to use against foes.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Koopa Troopa |
Basic foot soldiers of Bowser who leave behind a shell if you bounce on them. They come in 2 colors - green ones will walk off platforms, while red ones are capable of turning around before a fall. There are a lot of red and green things in this world - like the Mario Bros. - and I feel like the difference between the colors is implying something... | ||
Koopa Paratroopa |
Koopa Troopas started the whole "Para" thing - named after brave paratroopers who would glide across the sky and attack. That's exactly what they do here; except that their attack is just flying or hopping around. Green ones do the hopping, while red ones do the flying around. | ||
Dry Bones |
Dry Bones are the undead version of Koopa Troopas. Whenever you jump on them, they'll reassemble again a bit later, so there's not many ways to really defeat it. They turn around at ledges and pits, so they must be red Koopas...what happens to the undead green Koopas? | ||
Parabones |
If Dry Bones are Koopa skeletons, Parabones would likely be Paratroopa skeletons. They are much more agressive than normal and will chase a player when it sees them. The wings will also regenerate alongside a Parabones, so be careful! | ||
Beach Koopa |
I dunno why they're called Beach Koopas, but they look hilarious. Once you bonk a Koopa out of their shell, these guys will chase after you to try and get their shell back. They're pathetically weak and easy to avoid, but they try nonetheless. | ||
Bombshell Koopa |
Bombshell Koopas are distinguished by their shiny black shell, and contrary to popular belief, they are not actual bombshells. (Well, maybe they are to some Koopas, but that's not what I'm here to talk about.) After stepping on their shell, you have a short time to pick it up and throw it before it explodes violently as a counterattack. |
Cheep Cheeps[]
Cheep Cheeps are fish-like enemies that mostly appear around water. Since they live in water, projectiles are normally your best way to deal with them. Cheep Cheeps come in all sorts of pretty colors and sizes... I wish I could keep one as a pet!
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Cheep Cheep |
They may be called Cheep Cheeps, but they're far from cheap! These tiny fish can be a mean enemy, jumping from waters and trying to tackle Mario. I can't really say the same for when you're underwater, though. | ||
Deep Cheep |
Residing only in the depths of the oceans, Deep Cheeps are much more aggresive then their red-skinned cousins. If they catch sight of you, they'll chase you down! However, they don't turn around, so swimming past them is an effective strategy. | ||
Spiny Cheep Cheep |
Encountered in small groups, these Spiny Cheep Cheeps will relentlessly go after anybody they see, no matter how far away they go. They can't jump out of water, so hopping out of the water repeatedly will help! | ||
Eep Cheep |
Eep Cheeps are huge scaredy-fish, and they try to travel in extremely large swarms to make themselves look tougher. Ultimately, however, they'll try and swim away from you when you get close. Poor guys. | ||
Cheep Chomp |
These huge purple Cheep-Cheeps have little squinty eyes, so they rely on other senses to catch food. Unfortunately, it looks like Mario smells too good to resist! I wonder what Mario smells like... | ||
Porcupuffer |
Porcupuffers are part porcupine, part Puffer Cheep. Underwater, they'll swim back and forth in a set path, hurting anyone that touches their spikes. Above ground, they'll swim around and attempt to leap into the player. | ||
Fish Bone |
These undead Cheep Cheeps normally mind their own business, but if they catch sight of you, watch out! Their eyes will turn red and lock onto you before charging in your direction. Maybe you can lure it into an obstacle! |
Plants[]
Normally I like flowers, but these plants are rather different, as they like me back...in the "I'll eat up your health like it was food from a buffet" manner. They'll do whatever they can to stop you from advancing, but they're really only found in grassy areas such as outside or in gardens.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Piranha Plant |
Piranha Plants are carnivorous creatures that'll try to snap at you. They can be found popping out of pipes normally, but sometimes you'll find some rooted to the ground. They're both dangerous as they can't be jumped on, but since they're rather stationary it's easy to avoid. | ||
Venus Fire Trap |
Venus Fire Traps has a black color, which is symbolic for something that you should stay away from. They'll spew fireballs at you that, while slow-moving, can quickly surround you. Avoid it unless you're willing to take the risk of getting up close and throwing something at it. | ||
Bone Piranha Plant |
One of the toughest Piranha Plant species out there...it's kind of obvious to figure that out, since it's skeleton is still sturdy enough to keep living! Like most bone enemies, they are immune to fire and some other projectiles, making them extremely resilient. Luckily, there's a tad slower than regular Piranha Plants and are easy to avoid. | ||
Muncher |
Munchers are very persistent plants that simply can't be defeated by conventional means. To the player, they might as well be considered like spikes or other hazardous platforms. You'll have to find some outside force to get rid of them. | ||
Nipper Plant |
Little Nipper Plants are very hyperactive and hop around inside their pots. If you attempt to jump over a Nipper Plant, it'll bounce upwards and try to bite you, but it can only reach so high! | ||
River Piranha Plant |
These plants can be found in quicksand, waters, or even floating in the air! Their huge lips spew air that keeps a spiked ball hovering in the air, and it's not afraid to try and hurt you with it. That spiked object is near invincible, so you're better off attacking the plant or simply staying away. |
Bros.[]
These guys are some of the most elite members of the Koopa Troop I've seen in my life. They're distinguished by normally walking in place rather than moving a lot, and generating some sort of projectile for their attack. As their name implies, they are normally found in groups rather than being alone: share the brotherly love!
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Hammer Bro. |
Hammer Bros. were originally some of the top Koopa Troop members due to their notorious hammer throwing. Even though their skill has waned over the years, they can still prove to be a trouble, quickly tossing mallets at incoming players. | ||
Boomerang Bro. |
Boomerang Bros. throw...well, boomerangs! They'll travel a far distance before returning back, so don't think you're safe when heading out to defeat it! Since it can only keep 2 boomerangs out at a time, use the moments it has where it's open and boomerang the pain back to him! | ||
Fire Bro. |
These Bros. like to turn the heat up to eleven by throwing fireballs out of their hands, just like Fire Mario. Perhaps they view him as an idol? Probably not, since they still attack him, but at least it makes it easy to predict how the fireballs work. | ||
Ice Bro. |
The quite literally "polar opposite" of Fire Bros., Ice Bros. throw ice balls that freeze whatever they touch, whether it be an enemy or the ground. In some cases, they can be quite helpful for freezing dangerous terrain, but otherwise you might as well take them out. | ||
Sledge Bro. |
Overweight Hammer Bros. that somehow carry the strength to throw giant sledgehammers despite them being out of shape. They can also jump and ground pound the floor, stunning you if you're not in the air. And despite all that, he doesn't seem to ever catch a break... | ||
Sumo Bro. |
They may not wear much armor, but they don't really need it: they relie on their powerful moves to get the job done. Just stepping on the ground causes a huge electric wave to come down. You can't jump on them because of that spike, so hit them from below! |
Desert Enemies[]
While they're normally found in the desert, these enemies have been imported to serve in Bowser's empire. These enemies have been exposed to devestating heat so Fire Flowers are slightly less effective against them, whereas Ice Flowers will do wonders.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Spiny |
Spinies are small Koopas that wear giant spiked shells. You can try to jump on them all you want, but in the end it's not going to do much. Just about any other kind of projectile might get the job done, though... | ||
Spike Top |
With a name like Spike Top, I think it's pretty clear that jumping on him is not the right idea. Their sturdy shell allows them to shrug off all sorts of projectiles from Mario. You know what might be a good idea? Leaving it alone. | ||
Spike |
Spikes are a type of Koopa that are too big for their shell. It's probably got something to do with all the spiked rollers that they have in their stomach: it's almost limitless! Wait until they throw their ammo to give them a good boot on the head. | ||
Pokey |
These cactus guys might look cute, but they can tower over you if they have enough segments. Having a power-up like the Boomerang Flower might be handing for taking out the segments one by one. Just don't touch it, cause it's a little...pokey? | ||
Fire Snake |
These chains of fireballs are a little on the slow side, but as they slowly hop towards you, they can prove to be a big annoyance if you're not on the go. Pack an Ice Flower or something similar so that you can freeze it up, creating an arching platform. | ||
Tweester |
They're under the list of enemies, but they can't really hurt you on their own... they slowly move around, picking up anything in its way and violently spinning it around. This is great for reaching new places! Since it's mostly wind, something like a propeller should finish the job. | ||
Chain Chomp |
These dangerous guard-chomps will try and bite at anything in its way, only to be limited by a chain tied to a post. It'll break out if you let it tug for too long, and you can also pound the post on your own...but at what cost? |
Aquatic Enemies[]
These enemies were originally found in the oceans before Bowser imported them. They generally live inside or around water, which means that asides from Power-Ups, you'd just have to avoid them otherwise. If you can get them to jump onto land, though...
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Blooper |
Annoying little squid-pests that will swim in an odd and erratic fashion, attempting to confuse you into hitting it. I heard an old legend that says that Blooper's odd movement comes from squid kids who were born with defects and couldn't run around right... | ||
Blooper Nanny |
As if one Blooper wasn't bad enough, the Blooper Nanny can produce up to four Blooper Babies! They'll follow her around in a long chain, and after a while disperse and chase after you. Touching a Blooper Baby won't hurt you, but it will severely weigh you down and make you a quick target for the Blooper Nanny. | ||
Huckit Crab |
Huckit Crabs are small crustaceans that have only one claw on them. With but one claw left, you'd think they'd appreciate it and spend their last moments with it doing great things, right? Nope, they just sit there and lob sand balls at you. It's like they're asking to be defeated... | ||
Urchin |
Do I really have to describe him? He looks so self-explanatory. Giant floating obstacle? Swim around it! Covered in spikes? Don't touch it! Lives underwater? Bring a Fire Flower! Who even hired me to write this kind of stuff? | ||
Torpedo Ted |
Torpedoe Teds are like Missile Bills with scuba goggles; minus the scuba goggles, of course. They're dropped from Skull Boxes and will slowly travel forward...unless they lock on to you! In which case, swim! Swim for your life!! |
Sky Enemies[]
Bowser has went as far as to steal from the sky in order to support his castle. Pretty crazy, huh? Since they're sky inhabitants, most of them has form of ability to fly around, which might make tracking them down and defeating them harder than normal enemies.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Wiggler |
Wigglers are cute little caterpillars that roam around with free will. They're adorable, and I don't think anyone would have the heart to stomp them; especially considering the fact that they get red with anger and chase you if you do such a thing. Yeah... | ||
Flutter |
Grown up Wigglers that have grown wings and hands. They've also grown an even bigger temper, chasing you if you wake it up relentlessly. It's a weird thing, how the cuter things get, the more menacing they become... | ||
Flame Chomp |
Flame Chomps have a tail of fireballs that they also use as their ammo, circling around you and spewing fireballs in a single direction. Once they run out of fireballs, they will self-destruct shortly after, so be cautious! | ||
Lakitu |
Lakitu are unique Koopas that ride a cloud through the air, chasing the heroes no mater how fast they run. While they hover, they'll throw items to the ground; normally they toss Spiny Eggs, but will occasionally throw Gurindais. You can jump on them to defeat them, and steal their cloud as well! | ||
Fuzzy |
Fuzzies are wild creatures that prefer to reside around poles and loops. They'll travel around their tracks at high speeds, and even do a little flip if they get thrown in the air. If you freeze them, they'll make a nice rail-riding platform for a short time. | ||
Foo |
Foos are puffy clouds that spit out fog from their unsettling mouth. The fog doesn't deal any sort of damage, but it can be a bit of a nuisance if you don't see where you're going. They also look pretty tasty, but I don't think eating a Foo is the best way to defeat it. | ||
Waddlewing |
If you ever steal acorns fom an acorn tree, chances are you might later have to fight a Waddlewing. They'll fly around, cling to walls, and be a nuisance in general. They do sometimes carry acorns that you can crack open to reveal a power-up, but expect a bunch of enemies flying your way if you do that. | ||
Parabeetle |
Parabeetles are Buzzy Beetle-esque enemies that...really aren't enemies. In fact, they'll give you a hand, as riding their shell allows you to fly up. Some even let you race around with them! They still hurt you if you hit them from the side though, so be careful. |
Ice Enemies[]
A far-off land known for its chilly weather has been invaded by Bowser's troops, bringing in enemies. These guys can be rather hard to take out due to traction, but if you have a Fire Flower on you then they'll go down faster than an ice cube melting in a volcano!
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Freezie |
Freezies are ice sculptures that seem to provide a rather chilly reception with that frown on its face. Hitting one from below will cause it to shatter, leaving a giant wake of iced ground where it was defeated. It'll also shatter if it hits something after a long fall or if exposed to a fireball. | ||
Cooligan |
Both figuratively and literally cool, these shade-sporting penguins slide at high speeds across ice. One stomp removes their glasses, which slows them down a lot. A second stomp will then quickly defeat it. | ||
Fliprus |
Snow-throwing Spikes would've been much cooler, but Bowser decided to hire these guys instead. Pretty weird, huh? Either way, these guys jump in one spot and throw snow balls that grow bigger over time. You've been warned! | ||
Snow Pokey |
Whoever thought it would be a good idea to make a snowman like this should be fired from the enemy design team. Anyways... Snow Pokeys move around at the speed of normal Pokeys, but they'll actually turn around and attempt to chase you. Using a fireball can melt it a lot faster. |
Cavern Enemies[]
Enemies that live in caves, down underground. Most of them still manage to feel right at home in Bowser's Castle...says a lot about it, don't you think? Most cave enemies can be rather tricky to deal with, so be patient and find the best strategy to take them down.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Buzzy Beetle |
Relatives of the Koopas that are restricted to walking on all fours, but have a much sturdier shell. Projectiles simply won't make it budge, but you can always jump on one to make it retreat inside its shell, providing you with a throwing tool. | ||
Coin Coffer |
These rare enemies carry lots of coins inside them! It's smart enough to know that the average hero loves to grab coins, so it'll flee as soon as it's exposed. Don't let it get away! Save the money! | ||
Swooper |
Swoopers are bats that like to hide in the dark, where you can't see them. If you get close, they'll leave their hiding place, and fly towards you. They don't turn around, so make sure that you have some sort of way to get around them, whether it's from above or below. | ||
Monty Mole |
Small moles that will pop out of the ground when you approach their hiding spot. They'll then try to chase after you, but they're not that great at it and end up skidding a lot. You could probably trick one into falling down a pit or something to get it away from you. | ||
Bony Beetle |
Bony Beetles are undead Buzzy Beetles that slowly roam around. Like Dry Bones, jumping on them will scatter their parts, but they'll reassemble quickly. Bony Beetles also have spikes that portude from their shells when they reassemble or after some time. I never understood why regular Buzzy Beetles never had these spikes... |
Fort Enemies[]
These enemies are some of the toughest you'll likely ever face on your journey; that's why they're held in the forts and castles! It'll take all your strategys and wits to keep them down for good, as there's no sound strategy for all of them, but to never give up!
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Boo |
Well, now we know where the game of peekaboo comes from! They'll chase you when your back is turned, but freeze up when you look towards them. It's like a game of red light, green light, but more dangerous... | ||
Magikoopa |
The underlings of Kamek look a lot like him, don't you think? Is it some sort of egotistical humor? Whatever the reason, Magikoopas can prove to be just as annoying, with their magic blasts turning blocks into enemies. | ||
Charging Chuck |
TEN-HUT! The Chargin' Chucks are dangerous and ruthless, chasing you down until you're gone for good. They take a lot of stomps to defeat and will only get angrier as you whittle them down. | ||
Whomp |
Get in the way of these big guys, and they'll try to flatten you. Assuming you don't get squished, you can ground pound their backs once you hear that WHOMP sound to break them apart. | ||
Thwomp |
These stone menaces will come crashing down if you approach them, so wait until they start lifting up again to cross! Bowser loves to hide these in the most unobvious and cruel places... |
Artillery Enemies[]
These enemies are found in domes, airships, battalions, and the like. They're rather sturdy ammo and often recquire a specific method to be defeated, or simply can't be taken down at all. Considering how most of those stages move on their own, avoiding the enemies is normally a good strategy.
Enemy | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Bullet Bill |
Fired from Bill Blasters, these tough enemies can't be taken down with projectiles like fireballs and boomerangs. You'll need to land a solid jump on their base to defeat them! | ||
Banzai Bill |
Giant bullets that are fired from Banzai Blasters. They move a bit slower than regular Bullet Bills, but their huge size makes them a much larger threat...both figuratively and literally. | ||
Bob-omb |
Bob-ombs are rather explosive enemies. They'll slowly walk around, but if they're attacked, get away! After a short amount of time, the Bob-omb will blow up. It's definitely something you don't want to get hit by. | ||
Rocky Wrench |
The Rocky Wrenches are expert mechanics, but rather horrible fighters. They'll pop out of their little hole and throw a wrench at you. Don't even bother attacking it while it's hiding. | ||
Mechakoopa |
They're supposed to be robotic replicas of Bowser, but they look nothing like him! Anyways, jumping on them allows you to pick them up and throw them as a weapon. Make sure to keep tossing them so they don't wind back up! | ||
Blockstepper |
These guys love to march in huge groups. If you knock even one out, the whole mess of them will go nuts and chase after you. Just let them march, and they'll let you pass. |
World Progression[]
Unlike previous Mario games, Bowser's new castle (dubbed Bowser's Empire) is the center of all the levels of the game, rather than having Mario traverse across multiple worlds, though the actual world symbol is still kept intact to refer to certain sections of the castle. The world's levels are close to 3D Land and 3D World where they have multiple themes rather than 1 basic one. In addition, every level has a different Toadstool's Blessing effect. For a list of the ways that the Toadstool's Blessing affects each and every level, as well as small descriptions of each level, see Super Mario Bros.: One Last Life/Toadstool's Blessing.
amiibo Support[]
Super Mario Bros.: One Last Life contains amiibo support, and is notably the first game on the Nintendo Hypercube to do so. Scanning a Mario series Amiibo into the system during the game will unlock special effects exclusive to them.
Amiibo | Effect | ||

Reception[]
User reception has been mostly positive. Withersoul gave the game a score of 92%, and many have described Super Mario Bros.: One Last Life as "amazing" and "a literal masterpiece". Most of the praise for the game comes from the mechanic of only one life and multiple characters to balance it out, with StarKing64 noting that "this is a great idea, taking away something most players take for granted" and KinglerMaster saying that "many people carelessly misuse 1-Up Mushrooms and take them for granted, and now they'll realize how hard it would be without them".
Criticism has come from how easy it was to get the Invincibility Leaf and breeze through the game. KinglerMaster explained that "it should be more like original Mario games where Game Over meant GAME OVER and there were no cheat items to use when you're too lazy to actually play the level properly." This criticism was eventually taken into account and established in a Day 1 patch for the game, making the Invincibility Leaf much rarer and less overpowered.
Reception from the Fantendo League of Critics has been positive as well. Creationary Critic gave the game a Particularly Well-Written Rating, praising the creativity of the new ideas presented in the game and the story, but criticizing the lack of new power-ups, items, and enemies.
The game was voted the July 2015 Fantendo Underground Game of the Month by the userbase.
Trivia[]

- Super Mario Bros. DX
- Old Super Mario Bros.
- Super NES Mario Bros.
- Mario: Return to the Mushroom Kingdom

- Mario's special ability was originally going to be the Spin Jump, but later on every character got to use the ability.

- This is one of, if not the only original Mario game not to feature some form of new character, boss, or enemy. The developer explains that since it is supposed to be a title in honor of Mario's history, he wanted to focus on canon enemies rather than making new ones.
