ForMonsters is an RPG-based monster collecting game developed by Odd Spores Studios. The game follows the player character as they find, collect, and battle different kinds of ForMonsters. It is produced for the Nintendo Switch gaming system.

Story[]

ForMonsters/Story

Gameplay[]

Obtaining ForMonsters[]

In order to obtain ForMonsters, you can randomly befriend them after a battle. There is a 50% chance that certain ForMonsters will befriend you after a battle, though rarer ForMonsters have a lower chance of befriending you after battle. You can use certain items in order to increase their chance of being befriended. Some ForMonsters are also automatically befriended throughout the story.

Team[]

ForMonsters are fought in different kinds of teams. Depending on what kind of ForMonsters you have, they fill up your team slots. Normally, you will have six team slots. Each slot can hold one normal ForMonster. However, there are tougher variants known as Tough ForMonsters that have increased power in their moves and are better in battle. However, these Tough ForMonsters will take up two slots on your six slot team. It's up to you whether you want a team of six normal ForMonsters or three Tough ForMonsters.

Battle[]

When in a battle, only three ForMonsters can be out at a time. These ForMonsters can be switched in simply by calling them back and then calling out another one. There are two types of battles you can go through; 3v3 battles and 1v3 battles.

ForMonstersBattling

In 3v3 battles, you will battle your ForMonsters with 3 other normal ForMonsters. In 1v3 battles, you will use only three of your ForMonsters against either a Tough ForMonster or a Boss ForMonster.

During battle, every ForMonster on your team has a ForMeter. This is a meter that tells them when they can transform into their Form. Normally, the meter is blue and asleep.

ForMeterSleep

But once the ForMonster participates longer in a battle, their ForMeter starts to fill with Vigor, signified by the red on the meter. And once the meter fully fills with Vigor...

ForMeterAwake

You will now have the option to transform your ForMonster into their super-strong Form!

Due to their great power, you are only allowed to use a ForMonsters Form for three turns before it reverts back to it's original look.

Development & Credits[]

Development[]

The ideas of ForMonsters originally started in TheWikiOddish's freshman year of high school. In an art class, he and a group of three other friends had used to draw small creatures. Two of the people would draw cute monsters while the other two would attempt to draw stronger, cooler, or scarier versions of the cute ones. The idea was usually a daily routine until seating-arrangements were made and the group eventually fell apart. However, a journal filled with all of the drawings was preserved by TheWikiOddish so that nothing would be lost.

The idea of ForMonsters had not been used for some time until around late 2019 where a new IP was wanted involving a monster collector game. Many ideas were thrown around until the journal that was previously archived had been revealed. Going through the designs revealed many interesting concepts that could be used for the game, and it was eventually decided that ForMonsters would be used as the new IP.

ForMonsters was revealed during the Fantendo 2020 Spring Showcase. It was describes as a new monster-collecting game that was similar to Pokémon and Yo-kai Watch, though with different mechanics. A lot of the games scrapped content appears during this showcase despite there not being images. Battles were described as being able to befriend ForMonsters.

After some feedback on the idea, the majority of game mechanics was overhauled to be more unique, so ForMonsters had gone through another development with a changed art style in order to differ itself from other already existing games/projects.

On the Fantendo Discord, most of the designs were revealed early in order to get opinion and notice of the game's release. The characters Sporoom, Chyarm, Gooien, Burgeroar, and Hauntridge were all shown off before the release.

Designs are also shown off just before they are posted on Fantendo. The majority of designs are posted on the Art channel on the Fantendo Discord server and then uploaded onto the ForMonsters page.

Scrapped/Reworked Content[]

Below are things that went through development that either didn't make the cut or were reworked into something else.

  • During the 2020 Spring Showcase that ForMonsters was revealed at, two currently scrapped classes were mentioned. These two were Creature and Space. It is unknown what these were meant to do or what ForMonsters were in these classes, though it can be assumed that Creature may have been an early Animal class, which in itself got scrapped later on. Food is the only class revealed at the Showcase that made it entirely into the final version.
    • During the same 2020 Spring Showcase, a concept known as Summoning was mentioned. It was described that, if you collected enough ForMonsters from each class, you could summon special ForMonsters that don't normally appear. This may have been scrapped because it was seen as too similar to the mechanic of Legendary Yo-kai from Yo-kai Watch.
  • As stated on the Fantendo Discord when talking about scrapped content for games, it was revealed ForMonsters had a very different motif. The original purpose was for you to eliminate all of the ForMonsters in the human world using things such as weapons and machines until there were none left. This was found to be too dark and was eventually remade.
  • There were originally 12 different classes in the final version, with the scrapped two being Animal and Fiery. All that is known about them is that Lampferno was originally under the Fiery class until it got moved to the Object class. Emberyo might have also been in the Fiery class before being moved to the Seasonal class.
  • The Tech class was considered to be named the Digital class, though this was scrapped as Kotomo already had a Digital-type. It was also originally considered the Electrical class, but was changed as most of the ForMonsters were based on machines/tech objects.
  • The Weather class was considered to be named the Seasonal class, but this was scrapped.
  • Cerebrumo originally had an alien inside of it's head in place of electricity. This was changed as "it didn't fit the aspect of electricity".
  • Hauntridge and Bassbeat were originally one whole ForMonster, but were split into two different concepts later on.
  • Tadcule has had it's description changed before finally developing. The section that talks about what it's water orb could be was described as a secret weapon. It was then changed to being made up of 100% clean water. It was then finally decided that the water orb was meant to form another Tadcule.
  • Reclustacean originally had a rock as a shell, though this was scrapped as it was seen too similar to the Pokémon Dwebble.
  • Fortresand originally had a toy shovel on it's head and even had a concept where it had them as arms, but these were scrapped as this was seen to be too similar to the Pokémon Sandygast.

Trivia[]

  • All ForMonsters characters are FREE TO USE, so don't be shy to use or ask about them if you want them to be in your project.
  • The game is obviously based off of different RPG-based monster collecting games such as Pokémon and Yo-Kai Watch, but also takes inspiration from the Fantendo project Kotomo and most other Pokémon-related Fantendo projects.
    • The concept of ForMonsters itself is primarily based around Yo-Kai Watch Shadowside, with ForMonsters primarily being an expansion on Shadowside's concept.
  • This is TheWikiOddish's second original game universe after Pickpocket, Our Hero!.
  • Most of the designs of the ForMonsters were scrapped designs for either enemies in Pickpocket, Our Hero! or scrapped Pokémon for the upcoming game Pokémon Unison.
  • Some of the ForMonsters had their Forms designed first and then their Bases designed afterwards. Some examples are Toothake, Spiskull, and Paintful.
