LEGO Shonen Jump (LEGO 少年ジャンプ) is an action-adventure LEGO-themed video game based on the Shonen Jump brand. It is scheduled to be released in August 2020 to tie in with Weekly Shonen Jump's 52nd anniversary. Much like other LEGO games preceding it, it was developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. The game serves as a crossover featuring many series published in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, similar to previous LEGO games focusing on a range of Marvel and DC characters.

Gameplay[]

The game functions similarly to other modern LEGO games, in that the game takes place in an open world with both a main story mode to focus on featuring linear levels, as well as side quests littered around the open world.

The entire game can be played in either a single-player or two-person co-op. It was the first LEGO game of its type to experiment with allowing online multiplayer.

The gameplay focuses on a mixture of genres. There are action-adventure elements, containing battles both with grunt enemies and occasional bosses. The game also has platforming elements and areas unlocked via puzzle solving. Characters all have their own abilities, which can be used for different purposes.

The story mode consists of 30 levels in total. The franchises the game highlights are Dragon Ball Z, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, My Hero Academia, Naruto, and One Piece. Each series is adapted into five levels. These five series are all unlocked from the get-go and can be played in whatever order the player chooses. Once all five levels from all five series have been completed, a further five bonus levels are unlocked, each acting as individual levels based on another Shonen Jump series.

Once a level has been completed, it becomes playable in "free play" mode, which allows the player to replay the level as any character they have unlocked from any series.

Each level is filled with collectibles. The most common collectible are studs, as seen in previous LEGO games. Collecting a certain amount will define you as a "True Hero", though the main purpose of studs is to act as a currency, allowing you to purchase content in-game. There are five hidden mini-kits on each level. Collecting all five will unlock a newly created LEGO re-imagining of a classic panel from the manga chapter(s) that the level is based on. One red brick is also hidden in each level, which upon collection unlocks a special ability that can be purchased with studs in the hub world which can be enabled and disabled in the pause menu. Each level features a hidden gashapon, which will make a specific character available for purchase.

There are multiple methods of unlocking playable characters in this game. The first is level completion. Once a level has been completed, the player immediately unlocks all characters that they played in that level. The other is through purchase. Other characters will become available for purchase after completing a certain level in which they appear. Hidden characters will also become available for purchase after discovering their gashapon in a level. The final way to unlock characters is via side quests. Side quests can be found throughout the hub world, where a character asks for help with a certain task. Once the quest is completed, that character then becomes available to purchase.

To traverse the large open worlds, the game features a selection of vehicles from the Weekly Shonen Jump series. Vehicles can be purchased in the vehicle selection menu and spawned on command.

A feature carried over from recent LEGO games is the photo mode, which allows the character to capture a photo of their surroundings or pose in a selfie.

The game is voice acted, however, most dialogue is recycled from archive footage of the series' anime adaptations and video games to cut costs.

Levels:

1. Entrance Exam

The first level of the My Hero Academia story mode is based on the Entrance Exam Arc, covering chapters 1-4.

The level begins with a cutscene of All Might (Casual) talking to Izuku Midoriya (Aldera Junior High) about being a hero. A tutorial stage then begins, which sees the player playing as the two characters, teaching the basic mechanics of the My Hero Academia mode. The player must make their way to the alley in which Katsuki Bakugo (Aldera Junior High) is being held hostage by the Sludge Villain. The player must then defeat the Sludge Villain, completing the tutorial. A cutscene plays where All Might reveals to Midoriya that his quirk is "One For All", a power transferal quirk. He then gives Midoriya this power and the opening credits play. The next part of the stage takes place in the entrance exam, in which the player plays as Izuku Midoriya (Entrance Exam) and Ochako Uraraka (Entrance Exam) navigating their way through the entrance exam for U.A. High School, clearing obstacles and solving puzzles in their way. Faux Villains attack on their way and the level ends with a boss battle with the Zero Point Robot. Once the stage is beaten, a cutscene plays of Midoriya being told he has been accepted into U.A. High.

Completing this level will automatically unlock All Might (Casual), Izuku Midoriya (Aldera Junior High), Izuku Midoriya (Entrance Exam), and Ochako Uraraka (Entrance Exam). Faux Villain, Katsuki Bakugo (Aldera Junior High), Katsuki Bakugo (Casual), Present Mic, Sludge Villain, and Zero Point Robot become available for purchase. The level begins with a cutscene set in Class 1-A of U.A. High of Shota Aizawa telling his new students that they will be practicing sports to train their quirks. He then passes them gym uniforms. The player can switch between Izuku Midoriya (Gym Uniform), Katsuki Bakugo (Gym Uniform), and Ochako Uraraka (Gym Uniform). The level sees the player playing a range of sports, including a 50-meter dash, long jump, side stepping, and ball throwing. Once completed, the level ends with a cutscene of Bakugo getting mad at Midoriya for performing so well despite being born quirkless. Aizawa steps in, revealing that he has the power to erase quirks, stopping Bakugo from attacking.

Completing this level will automatically unlock Izuku Midoriya (Gym Uniform), Katsuki Bakugo (Gym Uniform), and Ochako Uraraka (Gym Uniform). Izuku Midoriya (School Uniform), Katsuki Bakugo (School Uniform), Ochako Uraraka (School Uniform), Shota Aizawa, Tenya Ida (Gym Uniform), Tenya Ida (School Uniform) become available for purchase. The hidden character gashapon unlocks Inko Midoriya. Collecting all mini kits in this stage unlocks the chapter 6 panel of Ida running.

3. Battle Training

The third level is based on the Battle Trial Arc, covering chapters 7-11.

A cutscene opens the level where All Might (Hero Suit) barges into Class 1-A's classroom and announces that they will be partaking in battle training. The class steps out in their hero costumes and the level begins. The player takes the roles of Izuku Midoriya (Hero Suit 1) and Ochako Uraraka (Hero Suit), teaming up to act out a battle against Katsuki Bakugo (Hero Suit) and Tenya Ida (Hero Suit). The level sees the player traveling across the map, solving puzzles and clearing obstacles before reaching Bakugo, who serves as a boss battle. After this, the player must reach and build the weapon. Whilst the player attempts this, grunt enemies taking the appearance of Ida in his hero suit will attack. A quick audio clip confirms that the hero team won and the level ends.

Completing this level will automatically unlock Izuku Midoriya (Hero Suit 1) and Ochako Uraraka (Hero Suit). All Might (Hero Suit), Katsuki Bakugo (Hero Suit), Mashirao Ojiro, Mezo Shoji , and Yuga Aoyama will become available for purchase. The hidden character gashapon unlocks Toru Hagakure (School Uniform). Collecting all mini kits in this stage unlocks the chapter 7 panel of Class 1-A in their hero suits.

4. The League of Villains

The fourth level is based on the U.S.J. Arc, covering chapters 13-20.

A cutscene plays of Class 1-A at the Unforeseen Simulation Joint, where the kids are learning rescue training. Suddenly, real villains appear and crash the party. The player takes control of Izuku Midoriya (Gym Uniform), Minoru Mineta, and Tsuyu Asui. The three team up to traverse the area and battle grunt villains. The game switches perspectives, granting the player control of Denki Kaminari, Kyoka Jiro, and Momo Yaoyorozu who travel to a separate part of the U.S.J. arena, also battling villains. A cutscene plays of Nomu (U.S.J.) attacking Midoriya, only for All Might (Teacher) to show up. The player becomes All Might and Thirteen who have to fight Nomu, acting as a boss battle. Upon completion, a cutscene plays of All Might defeating the Nomu, causing the villains to flee.

Completing this level will automatically unlock All Might (Teacher), Denki Kaminari, Kyoka Jiro, Minoru Mineta, Momo Yaoyorozu, Thirteen, and Tsuyu Asui. Collecting all mini kits in this stage unlocks the chapter 13 panel of the villains appearing.

5. Hero Killer: Stain

The final level is based on the Vs. Hero Killer Arc, covering chapters 51-57.

The level opens with the player controlling Endeavor and Gran Torino in Hosu City. They work together to clear the area and take down Nomu (Trio) and Nomu (Winged), who act as grunt villains. Once this section of the level has been cleared, the perspective cuts to Izuku Midoriya (Hero Suit 2) and Tenya Ida (Hero Suit) fighting against Stain, who acts as the stage's boss battle. Once Stain has lost half of his health, a cutscene plays of Tenya Ida becoming incapacitated, at which point Shoto Todoroki (Hero Suit) arrives, allowing the player to control him and Midoriya to finish the battle. The level ends with a cutscene of our three heroes recovering from the battle. Kenji Tsuragamae turns up and congratulates them. A news report plays about Stain and his ideals, which we see Himiko Toga and Dabi watching.

1. Romance Dawn

The first level of the One Piece mode is based on the Romance Dawn arc, covering chapters 1-7.

The level begins with a tutorial on how the One Piece mode functions. The player takes the roles of Monkey D. Luffy (Child) and Shanks. The two navigate Foosha Village, clearing puzzles and fighting the Higuma Bandits. Eventually, they reach Higuma who serves as a mini-boss battle. Once the level has been completed, a cutscene plays showing Luffy almost drowning, only to be saved by Shanks who gives him his hat. The opening credits play, preluded by an explanation of Gol D. Roger. The player then takes control of Monkey D. Luffy (Pirate) and Koby, who have to work together to find Roronoa Zoro (Standard). Once Zoro is reached, a cutscene plays of Helmeppo talking to Zoro, followed by Luffy having a conversation with Zoro. Luffy and Koby then have to find Zoro's swords whilst facing off against Marines, who serve as grunt enemies. They then have to free him, which makes Zoro playable. The three then have to take down Helmeppo and Axe-Hand Morgan, who serves as a two-tier boss battle. Once the battle is completed, a cutscene plays of Zoro agreeing to join Luffy's crew and the two parting ways with Koby.

2. Orange Town

The second level of the One Piece mode is based on the Orange Town arc, covering chapters 8-20.

It begins with a cutscene of Nami (Orange Town), running away from a group of Buggy Pirates. Monkey D. Luffy falls from the sky, landing between them. The level then begins, with the player taking control of Nami and Luffy, navigating Orange Town, and taking on grunt enemy pirates. A cutscene plays revealing Buggy, the Buggy Pirates' leader. The player then takes control of Luffy, Nami, and Zoro, who arrive and take out all of Buggy's pirates. Once Buggy is hit, he splits, revealing that he ate the Chop Chop Fruit, granting him the power to split into multiple parts. Mohji turns up, acting as a mini-boss battle. The player takes control of Luffy and Chouchou, who must defeat Mohji before Chouchou's master's store is destroyed. The stage splits into two, where Luffy fights Buggy whilst Zoro has to take down Cabaji, acting as the stage's final boss. In single-player mode, the player will have to switch between the characters to defeat them, though in two-player mode each player can fight a boss each. A cutscene plays to complete the level. Nami ties Buggy's body parts up and Luffy launches what remains of him into the air.

3. Syrup Village

One Piece's third level is based on the Syrup Village arc, covering chapters 23-41.

The level opens with a cutscene of Usopp running into his village announcing that pirates are attacking, only to reveal that he is just joking. Soon, Onion arrives announcing the same news. His accusation is also brushed off but once the Usopp Pirates go to investigate, they see that pirates are genuinely arriving. The player then takes control of these pirates, Luffy, Nami, and Zoro as well as Usopp. They make their way to the mansion, where another cutscene plays Kuro telling Kaya that she is not to associate with Usopp. Luffy and Usopp travel back to the cliff and overhear Kuro speaking with Django, plotting to kill Kaya. Usopp rushes back to the village to inform everyone of this, but they assume it's just another one of his tall tales and ignore his cries for help. The player is then placed in a battle, playing as Luffy, Nami, Usopp, and Zoro whilst hordes of pirate grunt enemies run to attack. Once they are taken out, a mini-boss battle takes place against Django. Beating him sends in another group of pirate grunts followed by a boss battle against Kuro who now has giant claws coming out of his hands. Once the player defeats him, a cutscene plays of Usopp joining the straw hat pirates. They are given a new ship, the Going Merry and they set sail for another quest.

Completing this level will automatically unlock Usopp. Carrot, Django, Kaya, Kuro, Onion and Pepper will become available for purchase. The hidden character gashapon unlocks Franky. Collecting all mini kits in this stage unlocks the Chapter 31 image of Luffy, Nami, and Zoro relaxing in the clouds.

4. Baratie

The Baratie level is based on the Baratie arc, covering chapters 43-68.

The level opens with a cutscene of the Straw Hat Pirates sailing the Going Merry towards a restaurant, Baratie. A Marine ship pulls alongside them lead by Fullbody, who fires at the ship. A short quicktime event plays where Luffy has to use his gum gum powers to deflect the cannonball, which ends up accidentally hitting the restaurant. Another cutscene plays, introducing Chef Zeff who demands Luffy work for him to repay his debt. The player then takes control of Monkey D. Luffy (Chore Boy) and Sanji, who have to traverse the restaurant and solve puzzles. A cutscene then plays of Gin arriving, much to the dismay of Patty who picks a fight and kicks Gin out. Luffy and Sanji then have to find ingredients to make a meal and deliver it to Gin, who is at the side of the boat. Don Krieg and the Krieg pirates arrive, and attack the restaurant in hopes of claiming it as their own. A fight occurs, with the Krieg pirates acting as grunt enemies and Don Krieg himself acting as a boss battle. Once the player beats Don Krieg, a cutscene plays of Sanji agreeing to join Luffy's crew, and the two set sail for their next adventure.

5. Arlong Park

The Arlong Park level is based on the Arlong Park arc, covering chapters 69-94.

The level opens with a cutscene of Arlong bribing Captain Nezumi. Nami (Arlong Pirate) arrives and the Arlong Pirates celebrate. Usopp and Roronoa Zoro (Arlong Park) arrive on a boat and the level begins. The two have to travel around Arlong Park, clearing obstacles and solving puzzles. Eventually, the two come across Chabo and Nojiko. A cutscene plays of Nojiko explaining Nami's origins, revealing that she works for the Arlong Pirates. Nami is then seen by a grave, revealing that she works for the Arlong Pirates under a deal to buy her village back from them. Luffy and Sanji crash land on the island, running into Usopp and Zoro. The player takes control of this cast of characters and has to reach Arlong Park. Once they reach Arlong Park, a brief cutscene plays of Luffy giving Nami his hat and demanding Arlong's attention. The player then takes control of Monkey D. Luffy (Hatless) as well as Roronoa Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp as they have to take down a series of grunt and boss battles. Pirates act as grunt enemies, Chew, Hatchan, and Kuroobi  serve as mini-bosses and Arlong serves as the final boss. Halfway through the battle, Luffy gets knocked underwater and the player has to use the other characters to rescue him within five minutes before continuing the fight. Once the player defeats Arlong, they then have to destroy Arlong Park. A cutscene then plays of Nami returning Luffy's hat. Nojiko and Genzo thank the Straw Hat pirates and Nami rejoins with them. Finally, Captain Nezumi is seen calling Navy HQ and demanding a price be put on Luffy's head, revealing his first wanted poster.

Bonus Levels[]

The bonus levels do not have their own hub world and serve only as additional levels covering series not seen in the main game. They are unlocked after beating all twenty-five level found in the five main worlds.

Characters[]

LEGO Shonen Jump features a large roster of characters from a whole range of series.

There are also eight slots for custom characters, which can be created using the pieces of any character that the player has unlocked in the game. Custom characters can also be assigned abilities if the player has unlocked a character with that ability. The character creator is in-depth, allowing the player to customize as specifically as they would with a real LEGO mini-figure. Similar to recent LEGO games like DC Super Villains, arms, hands, legs, and waist can all be chosen individually. A unique feature added to this game was the ability to draw over your custom character, however, any drawings will not be present in online play to prevent the use of profanity or graphic imagery. In the Steam port of the game, custom characters can be uploaded to the Steam Workshop.

The character menu is automatically arranged in alphabetical order, but there is an option to organize based on the series the character originates in. While viewing the character menu, the player can also filter out characters by abilities to assist with puzzle solving.
