Story[]

One day, a short stubby wizard by the name of Mr Ink-Otic, nick-named Ink Wizard comes up with an invention called the Phantom Ink. The Phantom Ink is something that can grant the wishes of anything. However it takes him over, possessing his brain and causing him to go crazy.

He starts causing trouble in the Origiami Mushroom Kingdom. Jumping from books to books and causing different explosions, everywhere. A spirit named Master Inklopis is summoned along with his own army, he forces Ink Wizard to become his own rookie.

One afternoon in the Real Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi and Toadiko head up to the attic of Peach’s Castle to investigate a hole in the wall causing a draft. As they check around, they find something infinitely eviler, something that will gaze into your soul, something that shouldn't be there- an Ice Snifit. But something isn't right, it has two huge muscles.

This icy sight sends Luigi running for his life to lower grounds. Thankfully, he’s OK. The Snifit jumps down and they start a battle. With Toadiko teaching Luigi the rules in battling. After he wins, the Snifit gets mad and throws a book at Luigi and jumps out the window.

Defying all logic, the book shoots out a number of paper-like people from its contents.

On Mount Brr, a Paper Bumpty wonders where he is, surprising many Toads. In Sunbeam Park, a Goomba squadron leader is puzzled by the new recruits. In Grizity Dunes, several Paratroopas are impressed by their snazzy shaded counterparts’ flying kick.

After what feels like hours, the book finally finishes upchucking its inhabitants. While Luigi and Toad are confused by all this, they see a pink sheet of paper slowly float to the ground…

In the throne room of Peach’s Castle, Mario, Peach and Toadsworth and.....Luigi? Are gathered around. Another Luigi and Toadiko eventually enter the room with…a Paper Princess Peach and a Paper Toadsworth? The Toads are confused at first, though they eventually catch on who is who.

The two Luigis look at each other and do a little mirror dance, it's clear that which one is Paper Luigi. The same goes for the two Toadsworths.

Paper Peach makes her acquaintance with the real Peach and her subjects. Paper Peach then asks for the Bros to find some of her subjects.

As if someone higher up was cutting them some slack, Mario and Luigi find some scared Paper Toads and Toadettes in the main chamber of the castle.

Toadsworth decides to make a call......

Mario and Luigi bring the mushroom folk into the throne room. The Toads and Toadettes still shiver in fear, however, as several other inhabitants of their world, such as the Nomadimice, friendly Koopas and Bumpties, were captured by Bowser’s Minions.

Thinking on it, Paper Peach realizes Bowser and his minions are also in this world, as the portal brought the paper inhabitants out in the middle of a reunion party Paper Peach was holding, which Paper Bowser gatecrashed. Upon realizing the danger Paper Bowser could bring about to both real and the scattered Paper people, Mario promises to help get them all back. Paper Peach also lifts their spirits by pointing out that her Mario is bound to turn up sometime.

A familiar little Yellow ball arrives.....she goes by the name of Starlow.

She introduces herself as a Star Sprite. Paper Peach thinks Starlow means Star Spirits. The ones that inhabit Star Heaven. She corrects her saying that she's from the Star Shrine.

Paper Luigi and Starlow decide to travel along with the duo, while they try to stock up on some Bros. Attacks in the Workshop. Unfortunately, Nabbit and Popple break into the castle, stealing all but two of the Bros. Attacks. While the Toads are thrown off by this robbery, Mario and even Luigi remain calm. The duo also learn the Paper people they’ve rescued are building something in storage.

On their way out of the castle, the Bros. bump into Toadette and Daisy, now aspiring to invent giant Papercraft floats. The two of them are called away by the Toads and Toadettes. Said Toads and Toadettes give Mario and Luigi a strange Command Block called a Copy Block. Finally, a friendly Lakitu offers his assistance to the Bros. on behalf of Princess Peach. Finally all geared up, Mario and Luigi begin their Paper Jam of an adventure.

Thousands of miles away, at Bowser’s Castle, an especially fearsome Bowser is going over his new plan with his trusted Magikoopa mentor, Kamek. This mini-meeting is quickly interrupted by the Paper counterpart with attitude, Paper Bowser. This conflict of attitudes leads to an all-out brawl between the two titanic turtles. As the two scuffle, Kamek learns from a confused Goomba that many paper people and Bowser minions are pouring over the Mushroom Kingdom. With this, Kamek remembers a paper book he looked for long ago, yet gave up on- a book said to contain a parallel world. On a lighter note, Bowser Jr. also meets his Paper counterpart a few feet away. Unlike their dear old dictator dads, the Juniors do get along.

As soon as Mario, Luigi, Paper Luigi, as well as Starlow, enter Sunbeam Park they’re quickly met with adversity from two Paper Goombas. One of them, a particularly eager Goomba, takes a closer look. This turns out to be a mistake, as Mario & Luigi touch the Paper Goomba in a way that makes him uncomfortable- and that’s no good. Enraged by this invasion of privacy, the eager Paper Goomba and his close friend engage the Bros. To no-one’s surprise, and with maneuvers that recall a superstar saga, Mario and Luigi defeat the duo. While the normal Paper Goomba gets out of there, the eager one warns the Bros. he’ll rally up the trusted Paper Goombas to get them next time. Shrugging this off, Mario and Luigi solve a simple gate puzzle and continue onwards.

They find a giant steam pipe in the ground and see a crumpled piece of paper, blocking a crack in the pipe. They find a generator at the end of the pipe, with two blocks electrically connected to it. The brothers have to hit them in a four beat note. After doing that, the pipe suddenly explodes, and the crumpled piece of Paper shoots in the air, and lands on Luigi's head. Causing him to daze.

The Paper unfolds into the shape of a Paratroopa. He addresses himself as......Parakarry, telling them that he's a mail-Koopa. He tells them that he wants to travel with them for the journey because of all the trouble that was going on. At first Starlow is worried about him getting killed in the adventure but he reassures her that he'll be fine.

These continuing dead ends and hang-ups in leads come to a head when the Bros. and Starlow come across the eager Paper Goomba. The eager Paper Goom- (You know what? Let’s just call him Perry. It makes it less annoying for you and me.) The eager Perry combines with his friends, brothers, sisters and second cousin into a Goomba Wheel. Before Mario and Luigi can even react, Perry and his wheel give chase.

With help from Paper Luigi and Parakarry, they survive the chase by jumping over the wheel. This causes Perry scream with anger and is about to run them over, but the wheel suddenly gets shot by a Black Figure. Someone who doesn't look at all familiar.

He pulls out a mushy shot-gun, aims at Mario, shoots him knocking him out. Paper Luigi and Luigi decide to fight him, themselves. But when they hit him, for some strange reason, he doesn't get hurt. He pulls out his gun again, creating a giant fireball, he shoots it at the two brothers and ends up bruising the two of them. Starlow and Parakarry are about to get hit by this crazy man. When all of a sudden......

A thin, red angel descends from the sky- Paper Mario. Working fast, Paper Mario tries to beat this guy up, he grabs his hood and grabs the gun, throwing it far away. However it lands in the direction of the man and shoots him far away. The odds evened out, Paper Mario wins the fight.

Though that event is behind the four Bros and the two Bosses. Paper Mario forms a fellowship with Mario and Luigi, with his little Bro introducing the three new friends. Parakarry is mostly happy to travel with him after nearly 14 years.

The main four brothers form a Quartet of Paper Jam Bros, allying to take down the twin Bowser armies. With expert timing and a unique kinship. The first test of the new Quartet comes when a Paper Red Toad is kidnapped by a normal Goomba- along with several others the Bros and Starlow somehow missed. The Bros manage to rescue over half of the Toads, but the other half are so frightened, their speed has dramatically increased beyond the trio’s current max. Seeing this, some of the rescued Paper Toads give and teach the Bros about the Dash Socks. The combined gift and tutorial allow the Bros to body chec- er, rescue the remaining Paper Toads. With Lakitu’s help, the Paper Toads are flown to Peach’s Castle, no worse for wear.

Fortune continues swinging in the Bros’ direction when the friendly Deliverytoad brings the Quartet a gift from Peach’s Castle. It’s a Quartet Hammer courtesy of the Paper Toads, yet fashioned after a legendary figure from a faraway island. Paper Mario, Mario, Luigi and Paper Luigi get to test the Giant Hammer out on a pack of angry Goombas, unleashing the power of the mythical Quartet Racquet on them. Marvelling at the Quartet Hammer's excellent power, the brothers continue to use it on the local baddies.

They soon arrive in a clearing with paper landscapes. This gets Starlow’s attention, as she realizes with Paper Mario’s help it wasn’t just people who came out of the book, but the land too. The nearby Bowser emblem wall explains a bit of this, but is still troublesome. A quick ramp sling jump topples the Bowser emblem wall, though.

Unfortunately, some bad news from Jolene, makes the Bros feel as though the emblem wall toppled them instead, as they learn the two Bowsers have joined forces and kidnapped both Peaches. Speaking of the Koopa Kings, they arrive in their Koopa Klown Cars to taunt the Bros. The Bros try to follow the Bowsers, but the normal Koopa King summons his abnormal Koopa Kreep minion Major Burrows.

Nevertheless, Mario and his Bros’ victory ends up pyrrhic, as the Bowsers still get away. All Major Burrows leaves behind is a strange ? Card. Seeing it, Jolene tells them that the ? Card can become a Character Card if Mario has alien technology called NFC Reading, to be used with equally alien merchandise called amiibo. Realizing Mario and the forces beyond their comprehension might not have appropriate funds for these alien items, she explains that Mario can also sell these ? Cards for just coins.

The plumbers head to the Park's gate exit. But they see that it has been blocked by a group of Paper Toads, admiring the sight of a flimsy Papercraft replica of Goomboss. Then the ugly old hag Kammy Koopa arrives and threatens to tear them up, they run away into Toad Town in fear. One Paper Toad however mocks her threat saying that he'd fight her himself if he had his Hammers, he walks into Toad Town. The malevolent Magikoopa leaves.

Paper Toadette and Paper Daisy arrive and admire the ugly sight of the replica. Saying that they could do something like that with the help of some dwellers that might have the muscle to build things.

The plumbers head on over to the Lakitu Info Centre and the owner of the establishment, welcomes the plumbers and he tells them that they need to pay at least 100 Coins for a Stache Discount. So after paying 100 Coins to the owner, he runs through some steps on what the Plumbers need to do in order to find some Paper Toads the quick way.

After collecting 30 Paper Toads (among them the Dojo Master of Toad Town). Toadley's Nurse walks out of a Purple Clinic and tells the Brothers that Doctor Toadley wants to see them and discuss the Paper Problem. Luigi groans, as the four head to the clinic. When the bros. and Toad Nurse get to the door leading to Toadley's office, it's locked. So Nurse Toad knocks on the door. After three trys, she gives up and goes home. Despite Paper Luigi's protests, Luigi knocks on the door anyways. Suddenly, the door bolts open, crushign Luigi and Paper Luigi into the wall, being put under pressure with the door.

The bros. enter the Clinic, and see Dr. Toadley consulting his crystal ball. Merlon is with him and they all look inside the ball. Both magicians focus their energy on the crystal ball, and everyone sees a vision. The vision shows the Koopa Kings' minions talking, and chatting about their differences. The two Kameks enter the room and scream out Battle sentences that the minions immediately reply to. However, Paper Kamek is baffled at "that ol hag's absence". Then the Koopa Kings arrive and tell the Minions what they will do to the brothers and how it will be dreadfully painful.

After watching the vision, Merlon gives the Plumbers the Crystal Ball , along with Two Hammers he received as a little present and tells them that with it, they can magically write new information in their Battle Guide. No matter where they are. The heroes rush out of the clinic, however when they leave. Merlon turns around and sees Toadley thinking about something- why this jam of world even happened.

They arrive back at the Papercraft Goomba's location. As the bros wait, several Goombas arrive to carry the Papercraft. Before the Goombas can do anything really nasty and make Mario and Luigi as flat as Paper Mario. Paper Luigi sees the four girls with the Papercraft, he yanks Paper Mario's Copy Block and uses it on himself, making an entire army of copies.

They pick up the gigantic version of Papercraft Mario. Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario jump atop the Papercraft red plumber from atop a cliff, and begin their assault.

During this first Papercraft battle alone, Mario and his bros learn the ropes of Dashing at the right time and place to push enemies over, Jumping to inflict massive damage, and allowing their Luigi carriers to dance to motivate them. Their curiosity sated by this knowledge, the bros disassemble every single Papercraft Goomba.

Before they can call it a day, however, Perry arrives atop a sinister Papercraft replica of an early thorn in Paper Mario's side- Goomboss. Papercraft Goomboss takes more punishment than it's lower counterparts, and Perry's command of it motivates the Goombas below to keep up the pace. In the end, the bros use Papercraft Goomboss' moustache to their advantage.

After this heated battle, Perry warns the bros he'll get them next time. Satisfied, and not really taking Perry's threat seriously considering they defeated him at his strongest, the plumbers enter the coarse, rough, irritating sands of Gritzy Dunes.

In the Dunes, the plumbers see Nabbit and chase after him. During the chase, Nabbit drops a Bros Attack and three Hammers. The bros continue to chase Nabbit, but their chase is put to a halt by Kamek and Paper Kamek spawning different cardboard platforms everywhere. So the brothers decide to find a way through the platform that's blocking their progress.

On the way, they find a real metal platform that can only be activated by hammering a button connected to it. After hammering it, the platform rises out of the ground and an Ink Thorb crawls out of the ground. And so the brothers fight the not so scary sight, learning how to use the hammers in battle.

After winning, the brothers continue on. As they brave the sands, the Quartet battle more Squiglets, as well as Snifaros.

The Quartet run into Popple this time, who steals the two hammers. With their Dash Socks and incredible athletics, the quartet take back the Hammers as well as another Bros Attack and press onwards to the sand-slide stairs. As they climb the stairs, Mario and his bros see Nabbit up ahead. Just as they reach the top, two Sunshine-like foes fall from the sky and crashes onto the stairs. This foe goes by the name of Petey Piranha, Normal and Paper.

The crash causes the heroes to land in a rock-pit, where a big Brick with eyes is blocking their escape route. So Mario and Luigi try to hammer it, but it doesn't work. Paper Mario then thinks to himself and realises what needs to be done.

He pulls out a Copy Block and in a four beat rhythm, Mario and Luigi slam their hammers on the block, causing the block to spew out 20 different hammers into the sky. Ten each land into Paper Mario's gloves then into Paper Luigi's gloves. They have now got hammers of their own.

In rhythmic order, the bros slam their hammers one on top of the other, multplying the force of impact. With this combined Trio Hammer move, the four brothers destroy the Brick.  This success allows the brothers to proceed onwards and take a shortcut, reaching the bridge. Unfortunately the Plants rock the bridge and cause the bros to fall into the grotto under the bridge.

The brothers wander around in the grotto, fighting all kinds of underground baddies. Eventually, they find a pipe leading up to the surface. However before they leave, they hear someone speak, as if that someone is trying to warn them. The Mario Bros just look around, wondering who that was. Paper Mario starts thinking. He then shrugs, as if he doesn't find it important.

They reach the surface and end up in Bob-Buddy Oasis, where they are called to help a Nomadimouse. He tells them that Bowser, sent his minions to capture his brethren. Paper Mario turns around to the biotic Bros. They jump in agreement and rush off to rescue the brethren.

After the mission, the Squeeks are thankful for being rescued. The Nomadimouse asks what they can do for the brothers as thanks. Starlow tells them about making a Cardboard Trampoline. They tell her that it is possible but they will need probably 29 Nomadimice to help build the trampoline. So heading into the DDD Lakitu Establishment and rescue 29 Nomadimice.

Mario and his bros then proceed to head back into the grotto and place the Trampoline. After placing it, they hear the same voice from the first visit. The bros and Starlow look around again. They forget about it.

After using the Quartet Hammer to blow away the two Plants' nickers the owner of the mysterious voice emerges...Junior-Troopa! Paper Mario looks annoyed at seeing him. Paper Luigi makes fun of him, making the situation worse. So he whistles out loud, and the Eagar Perry runs in. Jumping on top of Paper Petey Piranha, while JT jumps on top of Petey Piranha. Thus starts the second normal boss fight of the game.

Just like in Delfino Island, the Peteys use many different tatics, ranging from using their mouth to puke out graffiti. However that doesn't stop the four people that are two Marios and two Luigis.

After the two are destroyed. Perry and JT are to say the least charitably, incredibly angry. They run off like little babies and Paper Luigi calls them names as they run away. They tell him they'll be back in five minutes. He yells at them back not to count on it.

After using the trampoline again, the bros reach the bridge in a finger click, and head over to the bridge entrance to Bowser's Castle. They run into Kamek and Paper Kamek, who are looking for materials. However, they're puzzled at the lack of durable material, like someone else was here. In addition, they're looking at blueprints of their masterpiece. They insult each other because of the situation, but their insults are thankfully interrupt by the ground shaking. From the ground emerges a dreadful and scary sight.

It is a Cacktail! With Perry and JT aboard! Paper Luigi forms into his clones again, forming into a giant hand, grabbing the Dragon throwing it into the wall. The four girls arrive with another Papercraft- Papercraft Luigi! The brothers climb aboard the Green Plumber's oversized replica and battle the Dragon.

The dragon is incredibly fast for its size forcing Papercraft Luigi to stay in the air more often than expected. As the battle continues, though, the bros eventually get an idea to toss Papercraft Luigi over the barrier. With time and patience, Papercraft Luigi finally drops the hammer on the kiddies' second onslaught.

After the fight, they are steamed once again, and about to fight the bros when Paper Kamek picks them up with his wand and teleports them away. The Magikoopas fly off back to the castle.

As the Quartet finally reach Bowser Road, they see a giant Pirate Ship in the sky, shooting cannon balls everywhere. One hits the four bros, knocking them out. Two figures jump out and stand over the dead brothers, the shadow of one of them is a Crocodile, while the other is an Octopus. Their names are Captain Dist and Kaptain Skurvy

The brothers wake up inside a prison cell. Inside the cell, there is a window, Starlow wakes up and looks outside the window, she sees that they're in the skies. Paper Mario slips through the gap in one of the bars and hammers the lock on the door, shattering it into pieces. The bros are relieved at first- at least, until Luigi checks his person and realizes the not-really-that-important, incredibly minor detail that THE PAPER BOOK’S MISSING!

They decide to go an look for it, hoping that it wasn't stolen or anything.

They pass a prison cell where they see a Toad and a familiar ally of Paper Mario- Thoreau. Relieved to see the legendary hero, Thoreau and the Toad explain they wanted to escape, but Bowser has his eye on the prisoners. More concerningly is Bowser’s minions apparently harvesting something in the area. Thoreau is especially torn up over Paper Bowser’s apparent heel turn.

A new threat on the horizon, the bros pass a familiar foe, Tutankoopa, Perry, Junior Troopa and several Lavalava Yoshis trapped in more jailcells. Tutankoopa is not making the most of his captivity, while the Fearsome Five are scared, despite the Yoshi Chief’s optimism. Perry and Junior are mostly holding in their anger, and when they see the four bros, they call them jerks.

The bros are about to head to the next room, but their path is blocked by four Crocos.

Mario and his bros try to fight the mallet-wielding turtles, but the Crocos are carrying the Battle Block Commands. This forces the Quartet to evade them for early fights just to get their basic moves back. Soon enough, the Marios and Luigis turn the tables and restore all their abilities.

After the mission, the bros continue further through the dungeon. Their journey is interrupted yet again by the deadliest of adventuring obstructions- a locked door. The good news is the key is just across a nearby old rickety bridge.....which is over a bowl of Poison. The bad news is despite the four bros’ absolute delicate movement, the bridge gives out anyways. The bros try to climb out using Paper Mario as a sort of bonding rope, but the nearby Ice Cherbil activity causes Luigi to sneeze.

Just before the plumbers are lost to darkness, Parakarry and Starlow grab them. Parakarry tells them that they won't be growing longer arms in the future. This innocuous remark gives Luigi a bright idea for a move- using Paper Mario as a retractable “line” and normal Mario and Paper Luigi as a “hook”. And it was on that day, in that dungeon, that the Quartet Grab maneuver was born. They travel onwards, collecting different Jigsaw Puzzles. Sound familar?

Meanwhile, in Bowser’s Castle, the Juniors consider destroying the Paper Book for fun. Happy to just have a friend his age, Paper Junior is excited at the idea. Eventually, the two Princes decide against it, as they could go to Paper Junior’s world to cause havoc if they’re really bored, especially with another “friend” of Paper Junior back home.

The Juniors try to show the book to their dads, but the Bowsers are busy discussing the plan Bowser cooked up. When the Princes throw a tantrum, the Kameks suggest sending them, as well as their “unexpected guest”, up there for peace and quiet. At the same time, the twin Peaches not only try to cook up a way to escape, but they also talk about how annoying it is for them to be kidnapped all the time. Unfortunately, this otherwise honest talk removes the chance they had to escape, as the Juniors return.

As this is all going on, the Quartet make it up to the top of the ship at the captain's headquarters. They hide in a fling cabinet, as they listen to the plan that Dist and Skurvy are discussing. They hear something about a.....Phantom Ink? Planning to use it? TO TAKE OVER THE MUSHROOM WORLDS!!?

They try to sneak out without getting caught, but the captains catch them. They begin a brawl.

Kaptain and Captain are surprisingly tough despite being outnumbered 2-to-1. This is no thanks to them calling different Crocos and Octos to help them out in battle, what a duo of Scardey Rats. Eventually, the bros get the timing on this last ditch move and defeat the two captains.

After being worn out from the fight, the ship suddenly drops downward, and crash lands into Yoshi's Island. The brothers escape the shipwreck, the Toads, Lavalava Yoshis and even Thorauare just looking around in confusion. With his simple Italian charm, Mario convinces the former prisoners to help scope the beach out.

Even in the beachy paradise of Yoshi's Island, the Marios and Luigis must contend with the sea-faring enemies, such as Cheep Cheeps, Bloopers and so on. They also learn that even with the greatest protection and lots of Copies for Paper Mario and Paper Luigi. KOing an Urchin tends to end horribly for those who defeat them.

Upon arriving at Yoshi's Yold Village, the four brothers meet a sad Paper Beach Koopa. The Paper Beach Koopa contemplates to himself about how he feels the need to end it all, if he can't go back into the Paper World. The PB Koopa also waxes pink prose on whether one stays or is kicked out of their shell is beyond one's control. Parakarry decides to comfort the guy, but ends up surprising him. The Paper Beach Koopa looks away, but the Main-Koopa tells him that everything is going to be fine. Mario tells the Paper Koopa about the situation. During the conversation, the Paper Koopa brings up the idea of building a boat for them to use. Mario jumps with joy at the idea. So the Paper Koopa tells them that his 16 friends would need to help out.

The brothers decide to go and find a Lakitu Establishment and rescue the Paper Koopas. Among them, the bros find the famous explorer Kolorado and a real cutie named Koopie Koo.

After the 16 Paper Koopas have been rescued, they build the boat. After the construction is finished the boat is ready to set sail, but Thoreau decides not to go. He tells Paper Mario that he has decided to not to join him on the voyage, until he has defeated the fallen hero Bowser. Thoreau thinks it's time he went beyond what he was intended for. As the boat sails away, Thoreau waves goodbye.

Our heroes and passengers eventually arrive back in Sunbeam Park. What should have been a peaceful return is disrupted, however, by the sight of more scenery from the Paper World's Lands. The Yoshi Chief advises Mario to head back to Peach's Castle while he, the Fearsome Five, his friend and the prisoner Toads rest. Heading back to the castle, the brothers notice an outbreak of Monty Moles and Paper Bob-ombs. More concerningly, however, some of the Paper enemies are now Shining like stickers, massively increasing their power and durability.

The Four Brothers defeat them, with Paper Mario providing an especially huge hand. Nevertheless, it's apparent that other forces are at play. Back at Peach's Castle, Toadley and Merlon tell the brothers that they've seen something within the crystal- a sight they'll find of the utmost importance!

Within the crystal's vision, the two Peaches are imprisoned in a fortress/"villa" atop an icy mountain known as Mt. Brr. Nearby, Bowser Junior is looking outside a window of the villa, when Paper Junior arrives. Paper Junior and Bowser Junior head downstairs to "chill out" with their new friend, leaving the Princesses alone and shivering. To keep warm, the Princesses not only huddle together- they also stay optimistic that the bros. will save them, as well as just talk about "girl things". The Peaches are so cute huddling and talking, the other baddies start to watch, googly eyed.

Everyone looking into the Crystal Ball, turn their heads closing their eyes, refusing to know what will happen next. One even wants to take a shower.

Toadsworth and Paper Toadsworth call the brothers into the workshop, they have something to give them. It's a Battle Card set, they teach the brothers how to use Battle Cards, and how to change the Battle Cards in their deck. Their job is done.

On the way up to Gloomy Woods where the entrance to Mt Brr is, the bros see a Green Toad being attacked by those villains in a half-shell, the Koopa Bros. They surround the Green Toad. Starlow sees them and thinks that they're wearing Halloween costumes. The Ninjakoopas, annoyed, clear things up.

The Green Toad then explains what had happened, but then after a while, the Ninjakoopas use their shells to toss the green fungi far away. When Green and Red insult Starlow by calling her gross and out of their league, the fight begins.

The Ninja Bros use 4 Copy Blocks they got from "the big guy" and steal 8 copies out of it for each other. During the fight, the Koopas stack together for powerful shell strikes. If they cease spinning while charging, they'll jump over a bro. After the fight is finished, with Starlow annoyed at Bowser, the brothers head into Gloomy Woods.

When the bros enter the woods, they see different sculptures made of Ink. One of the Toads tell the brothers that Ink Trees and Landscapes have been appearing out of nowhere along with paper baddies, even the ruins of a factory are being worked. Luigi tells them that they are getting to the bottom of the situation. The Marios jump in agreement.

The brothers travel into the entrance of the forest fields, and hear a voice. The bros look around and see no one. Then suddenly the Elite Trio, drop down from the trees. As they confront the three misfits, Sergeant Guy gets out a Paper wand. He then looks at the bros. Some magical shapes show up... behind the Elite Trio. Paraplonk muffles Goomp before he says too much, as Sergeant Guy jumps on his back. Paraplonk then carries them all away slowly. Realizing that taking the easy way out with Peasley's flying pillow wouldn't solve things for the locals, the Marios and Prince resolve to removing the magical shapes.

The brothers head further into the fields and find a Wiggler named Weasly, who tells them that he's hungry and that he needs a berry. After finding one using the Quartet Grab, they feed it to him. Weasly then starts to get happy again until he sees the Magical Shapes in the distance. Mad, he destroys the shapes by ramming into them.

The brothers prepare to walk onwards, but then Weasly blocks them, insisting he's hungry and that he needs 10 berries. Using the quartet grab, the bros rescue one berry from a river. The move is also used to "retrieve" one from a Paper Koopa who wants a promotion from the Koopa Kings. Looking around the fields does the trick meeting the quota.

In this time, the bros learn quite well from battling the various Ninjis, Spear Guys and Elasto Piranhas, some covered in Ink.

With all the berries, the brothers give the berries to Weasly and are about to head on their way. To almost everyone's annoyance (including Starlow's), he tells them that he's still hungry. Parakarry decides that a dessert wouldn't be too much of a pain to give. The question is, where to find the dessert.

Suddenly a familiar friend, by the name of "Koopa The Quick." speeds past with a Water Melon in his arms. The Clumsy Mail Koopa has an idea.

So the brothers follow him and when they reach the place he's sitting down at, they ask him if they could use the Water Melon. He promises only if they beat him in a race around the village. So using the dash during the race, the brothers win the race and the Yoshi gives the Melon to them. Heading back into the fields they give the melon to Weasly and he roars up again smashing more Magical Shapes.

Venturing into the abandoned factory, the brothers find that there's another problem. There are some gates that have to be opened by breaking the electrical spike powering them, since there's no button to open the gates. So before they can do anything else, the brothers see Nabbit and throw a Bob-omb bud at him, making him drop another Bros Attack. They then preform the Quartet Grab, and throw two Bob-omb Buds that the two Electrical Spikes. This process continues until they reach one that has two spikes. After breaking the two, Kamek arrives on his broom and fights the brothers during a minigame.

After throwing some Bob-omb Buds at him three times, he flies away, battered and bruised. So the brothers continue and reach the entrance stairs, which are blocked out by a couple of overgrown trees. They then notice The Elito Trio and Wiggler arguing about the Magical Shapes and how they're not allowed. But Sergeant Guy zaps Wiggler. This makes Wiggler go nuts. The brothers try to make him snap out of it, but nothing works. Weasly stomps the ground. Private Goomp jumps aboard Weasly. The fight begins!

Even in a wide-awake world, the Elite Trio prove to be just as much of a match as they were on P’illo Island. Not only is their magic wielding a problem- the brainwashed Wiggler also serves as a major foe. Between Goomps angering Wiggler to increase the worm’s power, Guy summoning a bouncy ball for Wiggler to ride, Paraplonk ramming the bros. at high speeds, and Weasly standing upright to crush Paper Mario, it’s a tough bout.

True unclouded teamwork wins in the end, the bros win, freeing Weasly. However, the victory almost ends up hollow, as Wiggler goes into a deep sleep from his injuries. As Paragoombas lift Wiggler to a better place, Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario and Paper Luigi salute him Goodbye, while Parakarry hugs Starlow as she cries.

Even Paraplonk is horrified by what his actions wrought, despite Goomps and Guy’s reassurance…

…and the two were right to keep Paraplonk composed, as it turns out Wiggler is OK! He was just preparing for his transformation into a Flutter. Everyone relieved, the Elite Trio leave the Paper Rod behind as a show of good faith. Wig- I mean Flutter proceeds to give Mario and friends a lift to the cold heights of Mount Brr.

Flutter lands on the lowers of Mount Brr. The brothers travel onwards in the mountain, battling tough Paper Clefts and sign-wielding Handfakes, just like in Gloomy Woods, some of them are actually Ink copies. Not even a few moments later, they hear a bang in the higher part of the mountain. It starts to get annoying after three times. Then some ice colored origami drills start falling from the sky and landing in the snow- an effect of the Koopalings’ cooperation with King Bob-omb. Upon further examination of the ice drills, Paper Mario gets an idea. He tells Mario and Luigi his idea.

Understanding Mario spins around, Luigi spins around with his hand above his head and then Paper Mario jumps in the air and forms into a Paper cone and then Paper Luigi jumps on top of the cone and forms into the drill of a Screw-Driver. This is known as the Quartet Drill. They use it to drive through a cardboard platform, as well as collect some Beans, Coins and items in the ground.

With the help of Toadette, Paper Toadette, Paper Daisy and Daisy, the Bros. make it to a Village, full of Bumpties and Paper Bumpties.

Where they prepare to build a Papercraft to combat both Bowser Jrs. and save the princesses.

However, even after Papercraft Bowser Jr. is defeated by the new Papercraft Peach, both Captain Dist and Kaptain Skurvy show up and manage to kidnap both the Princesses and the book unharmed, while the two Bowser Jrs. get mad about the two captains taking away and kidnaping the two princesses. They run off crying accidentally leaving behind a Red Medallion that resembles Bowser's face.

Mario and Luigi give chase- failing to notice the lack of snow in front of them or below them for a few hundred feet. Realizing their reckless heroics too late, Mario and Luigi fall to their imminent demises. Thinking fast as always, Paper Mario dives down and acts as a parachute for Mario and Luigi, slowing their fall down. Obviously, they land safely. Also obviously, Luigi and Paper Luigi don't land in a dignified fashion.

As the team wonders where the Princesses and villains might be now, Mario remembers the strange Bowser symbol the Juniors left behind. They decide to go and look for a socket that might resemble it.

Conveniently, the team finds a path from the mountain to the Dunes.

While crossing Gritzy Dunes, they encounter both Popple and Nabbit twice, learming four more Bros. Attacks, and face off against a gang of Ink Corps, in the shape of Charging Chucks.

But just before they're about to enter the beach, Goombella shows up and asks if she can join. Mario says no, she asks if he'll reconsider. He says no again, and Goombella folds inside his overalls taking that answer as a yes, much to Starlow's bad luck.

They enter the Island and find that there's more Cardboard terrains than before. Goombella tells them to head over to a pipe. Starlow still unsure about this, tells the brothers to save the game just in-case something bad happens. However inside the dungeon, Goombella loses the Medallion to a group of Fire Bros. So they decide to rescue the medallion from the Fire Bros.

After completing the mission Starlow is about to give Goombella a piece of her mind for being so careless about the medallion, but she stops her, telling her that she's going to take care of any Paper captives Bowser still has. Calling her the smart one now. Though Starlow wants to give chase, Paper Mario is confident Goombella will be fine on her own. They decide to head to the gate instead.

Once they reach the gate, requiring the medallion. They place the medal in and it sinks into the earth, showing another earth wall. They use the Quartet Drill, to drive up the wall and continue onwards, reaching the pipe to the Rocky Bays of the Tropics. Surrounded by three pipes, each are placed beside a Clam Laser.

After solving these three puzzles, they enter a pipe that was unfrozen by the laser. It leads to the Bowser Road. They reach the pipe leading to Bowser's Castle, which is secretly blocked by Larry and Ludwig, who take the brothers by surprise and fight them. Losing in the process.

Arriving at Bowser's Castle, the brothers see that all the ore that was brought from the Dungeons and Underground Suburbs of the beach is being used for something. They notice the Elite Trio, complaining about hauling the Paper-Craft materials. Kamek flies in and tells them to get off their break and get back to work. The trio groan in agony.

The quartet meet Iggy, Lemmy and Morton, along with the Elite Trio, who possess some new gadgets.

Meanwhile, both Kamek and Paper Kamek tell the kings and the hag about the bad news, the two Bowsers get angry and also make matters worst, the two captains are going after the Phantom Ink to use it for some secret plan they've got going and that they teamed up with the Ink Monster and their master.

The brothers carry on and reach a platform, that is burst out of the lava, launching the brothers into the ceiling. The quick thinking Thin Red Angel forms into a Paper Airplane and rescues the three other brothers who are about to fall into the lava. Thus teaching them the Quartet Airplane.

Once they reach the actual entrance of the castle, Kammy Koopa shoots a Banzai Bill at the brothers. They jump over it, the explosion of the Bill reveals Kammy and her new, ugly, vicious and repulsive Papercraft Kammy Koopa.

Luckily, Toadette, Paper Toadette, Paper Daisy and Daisy arrive on time with their new Papercraft Luigi. Angry at the sight, Kammy fights them with her heavy brutal machine.

After the quartet's Papercraft is victorious, Kammy and the Kameks kidnap Toadette and Paper Toadette, Toadiko and Daisy to prevent the production of more Papercrafts. The group begin searching for them and rescue them shortly afterward from a few Elito Fly Guys, and also encounter the Bowser Jrs. on guard duty. But they don't make any noise whatsoever, because if they do, then they will be caught by them and sent to Bowser's throne room.

Meanwhile, the quartet. make their way to both the two Bowser Jrs. but, however they run away as fast as they can but Mario and Co. chase them down. In their last moments, Bowser Jr. reflects on the fun he had with Paper Bowser Jr. and realizing that it was his fault they lost because Captain Dist and Kaptain Skurvy kidnapped both the princesses.

The two Bowsers come in and mourn their loss, and the Mario Bros. alongside Paper Mario Bros. decide to escape the castle, they declare to kill the four brothers at last minute. The group then arrive back at Sunbeam Park once again with the help of a nearby Lakitu, and head back to Peach's Castle.

Meanwhile, Captain Dist and Kaptain Skurvy finally find the long lost Phantom Ink and are about to use it, when Master Ink jumps onto the ship and grabs it from Skurvy's hands. The Ink Monster also jumps on board and pull out some Ink guns, aiming at the Captains, but Dist however walks towards Master Ink and tells him that he will make a deal. He will help them destroy the Mushroom Kingdom, if he can have the Phantom Ink in return. Master Ink thinks about it and decides that they shall give it.

With the Ink making new Cannons, for the ship. The balls destroy, Toad Town and Bowser's Castle. Peach's Castle however nearly gets the same fate as the two other locations, but however only one destroys the roof of it.

Both Toadette, Paper Toadette, Toadiko and Daisy then realizes they can build a staircase with the Paper people from the summit of the mountain. They promise to meet the Mario Bros alongside the Paper Mario Bros. there.

The team begins to make their way through Gloomy Woods again to get to Mount Brrr, but end up on the haunted west side. Both Mario, Paper Mario and Paper Luigi are promptly kidnapped by both Paper Doopliss, King Boo and his minions, leaving Luigi alone to find them. After a pep talk from Starlow and Perakarry, Luigi travels through different obstacles with Boos patrolling the areas. He manages to sneak past them all. He finds Paper Lady Bow and Paper Bootler and asks them for help to find the three brothers.

At the entrance of King Boo's hideout, Luigi meets Ink Wizard ,who is revealed to be the one who created the Phantom Ink and the creator of both Master Ink and the Ink Monsters, who creates Ink Mario clones to stop Luigi, but upon the Ink Mario clones' defeat, Ink Wizard flees from Luigi. After finding the real Mario, they proceed to rescue both Paper Mario and Paper Luigi.

Once they find them, they reunite but after hearing eerie laughter, they realize that both the Paper Mario and Paper Luigi they rescued was both King Boo and Doopliss in disguise.

They proceed to battle them, but halfway through they threaten to tear up both the real Paper Mario and the real Paper Luigi, having two Paper Boos carry them in to prove their point.

However. the Mario Bros. defeat the two Paper Boos, and the four of them finish King Boo off and Paper Doopliss runs away from the quartet and they continue through the woods. Soon, they encounter both Green Kroc and Kutlass in their flying pirate ships, who challenges them to a minigame.

After defeating both Green Kroc and Kutlass; they then meet up with Flutter once again, who flies the quartet back to Mount Brrr.

At Mount Brrr, the group rescues all the remaining Paper people to build the staircase, and proceed to venture to the summit using new paper terrain that has been produced.

They meet many Lakitus and Paper Lakitus investigating the falling Paper Terrain and Pirate Enemies alongside the Ink Monsters before reaching the flying ship. Two Buccaneros, Three Pirate Guys, Four Bandineros, Five Pirate Kritters (Pirate Kremlings) and Six Ink Monsters.

Corner them, but Ink Bomber soon appears and stops them from defeating the team, he states that even if they are defeated, word would still spread, and no one can know of his operation. He then proceeds to start a timer to the operation's self destruction, which would wipe out everyone nearby who could spread the word. Both the pirates and Ink Monsters all flee back to the ship, while Mario and Co. challenge and defeat him before the timer runs out; successfully preventing the explosion.

Both Lakitu and Paper Lakitu then arrive at the summit with a large delivery of Paper people who build a staircase to the newly dubbed Neo Captain's Ship. The group then ascends the Paper people staircase while dodging more cannonballs towards Neo Captain's Ship.

Upon infiltrating Neo Captain's Ship, Ink Wizard casts a spell on the rooms and passages, making it harder for the quartet to navigate the ship. Upon doing so, Kaptain Skurvy taunts them and signals to the rest of both pirates and Ink Monsters that Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario and Paper Luigi have shown up.

The group then encounter Popple and Nabbit for the final time, who are robbing from the ship's vault. They engage in a chase, where the Mario Bros. can chase and fight both Popple and Nabbit for coins, but also work with them to fight the Pirate Guys, Buccaneros, Pirate Kritters (Pirate Kremlings) and Ink Pirates chasing them. Afterwards, both Popple and Nabbit leaves them with the remaining Bros. Attack as thanks.

The quartet find the four girls, who are defending Papercraft Mario, Papercraft Peach and Papercraft Luigi. However, Ink Wizard releases their new Papercraft Dragon Inktube, which burns them all to a crisp.

They moron loss of their work, but then realizes that they could build a Papercraft out of the same material, Fire Orb, which they asks the quartet to collect around the ship.

The first Fire Orb is already in the four girls' possessions. The second is guarded by Kaptain Skurvy, Green Kroc and Kutlass who are in their flying pirate ships. They are knocked out of the sky with Bombs by the group.

In a last ditch effort, Captain Dist shows up and attempts to blast down the final orb with cannonballs, witch are deflect back at him. The orb is used to assemble Papercraft Fire Mario, which then defeats Papercraft Dragon Ink. In anger, Both Captain Dist, Kaptain Skurvy, Master Ink and Ink Wizard destroy the bridge to the rest of the ship, forcing the Mario Bros. to reassemble it.

However, before they cross the reassembled the bridge. Kaptain Skurvy, Green Kroc and Kutlass activate a timer that allows the ship's biggest cannon to charge up for a powerful final blow to destroy any remain of both Peach's Castle, Toad Town, Yoshi's Island and Bowser's Castle, which both Toadsworth, Paper Toadsworth, Toadbbert and the others are reassembling. The Mario Bros. quickly break the cannon before proceeding.

Before they can face Captain Dist, Kaptain Skurvy, Master Ink and Ink Wizard, however, both the two Bowsers, two Kameks and Paper Kammy Koopa shows up and blocking the path and they also want both the book that contained the Paper Mario's world and trying to kidnap both the Princesses and steal the Phantom Ink from both the pirates and the Ink Monsters.

Both Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario and Paper Luigi fight the two Kameks and Paper Kammy Koopa first, and then finally they fight the two Bowsers. the Mario Bros. defeat them. The two Kameks and Paper Kammy Koopa explode, while the two Koopa Kings stay behind, beaten up and bruised.

Captain Dist, Kaptain Skurvy, Master Ink and Ink Wizard jump to the quarters of the Ship, they order the pirates and the Ink Monsters to finish off the Mario Bros.

Green Kroc and Kutlass attack first; followed by Kaptain Skurvy, and finally Master Ink and Ink Wizard; both Kaptain Skurvy, Green Kroc and Kutlass are defeated by the quartet while Master Ink has now been killed and evaporated.

But they are not done with Ink Wizard and he runs back to Captain Dist, telling him that they have to bring out the big one. Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario and Paper Luigi still have both Captain Dist and Ink Wizard to take care of.

The four brothers proceed to challenge Captain Dist and Ink Wizard themselves, where Peach and Paper Peach await, scared but hopeful.

They boast about the power they now have, with the Phantom Ink and both Princesses and the book in hand. Parakarry however grabs the Phantom Ink and throws it onto the ground shattering it

Both Captain Dist and Ink Wizard are initially shocked about this, so Ink Wizard soaks up the substance on the ground,  causing him to grow big and causes him to merge with the entire Ink Monster army creating a suit of armor creating Phantom Dist Wizard. Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario and Paper Luigi battle with him.

After the battle, Captain Dist is sent flying off of Neo Captain's Ship, and plummets to the ground, dead.

Ink Wizard grabs to book declaring that the war is not over and is about to blast Mario and company away from the ship, but is stopped by Bowser and Paper Bowser, who want the Phantom Ink back.

In which Bowser punches Ink Wizard so hard that he bealches out the remaining substance inside the Phantom Ink. Declaring that the Mushroom Kingdom belongs to him alone and is only his, Bowser charges up his most powerful punch he can make and pummels Ink Wizard away from the ship and up into the sky where his whole body explodes from the impact.

Bowser is about to start a battle with the quartet, but Paper Bowser stops him, saying that, he should let them off, this once. Bowser, takes two seconds and considers the request, but if they only give him thanks for saving their lives.

Before Mario and Bowser, shake on the deal, Kaptain Skurvy jump onto the head quarters and grabs Ink Wizard's shot gun, Bowser however punches him in the nose, as he breaths fire on the gun melting it. Skurvy, angry at this full on fights Bowser, with his fists.

At the last second Bowser grabs Skurvy by the neck and with the help of Paper Bowser, the two of them send him flying into the sky and into the sea. And then Bowser shakes Mario's hand.

Back at Toad Town, both Toadworth and Paper Toadworth are relieved to see the princesses while everyone gathered at the entrance, the group reunite with their friends. Both Bowser, Paper Bowser and their minions apologize to Mario, Paper Mario and the others for the mess they made, but saying that the whole adventure doesn't change a thing.

The four girls orchestrate a Papercraft parade, where they tour the lands bringing the terrain and enemies back to the Paper world, meanwhile Both Popple and Nabbit are being chased by Koopa the Quick while both the Bandits and Paper Bandits steals Melons from both the Yoshis and Paper Yoshis in the audience.

Afterward, Peach, Toadworth, Toadette, Bowser, Bowser Jr, Kamek, Mario, Luigi and everyone say goodbye to Paper Mario, Paper Luigi, Paper Peach, Paper Toadworth, Paper Toadette, Paper Bowser, Paper Bowser Jr, Paper Kamek alongside Paper Kammy Koopa and the Paper people who return to their world.

The book is then loaded into a Slingshot, where Mario and Luigi pull the trigger and send it flying into space. They both wave goodbye to the book, Starlow even sheds a tear at the sight. Luigi however pats her on the back to make her feel better.

Meanwhile, Kaptain Skurvy is desperately trying to move back to DK Island in a sailboat, he announces he will meet the Mario Bros. again in the future after plotting his revenge, and when he does he will beat them until they stop breathing. However the boat starts to sink into the sea, he gives a sailor's salute as the sinking boat drops into the water. Never to be seen again.

                                             THE END.[]

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is mostly similar to the previous games from both of the series especially Partners In Time and Super Paper Mario, taking the Paper People rescue missions and putting it in a Super Paper Mario styled 2D side quests.

Mario & Luigi are accompanied by Paper Mario and Paper Luigi, who help out in the overworld with the techniques and the battles. In which the Paper bros can shift into different objects, like a plane, drill or even a jump rope that can be used in the overworld to get past tricky obstacles. Mario and Luigi use the A and B buttons like in the past game. But however Paper Mario and Paper Luigi use Y and X, which is a swap around of the Baby Bros' buttons order (X and Y).

Battle System[]

To start a battle, Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario or Paper Luigi must touch an enemy or perform a First Strike by jumping on the enemy in the overworld. A first strike will damage the enemy before the battle starts.

In battle, players control all four members of the group. Both Paper Mario and Paper Luigi, in a first for the series, fight alongside but independently from Mario and Luigi, unlike the Baby Bros. in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the only other installment to feature characters fighting alongside the Mario Bros. This allows the quartet to take four actions in one turn.

While Mario and Luigi work the same way as beforehand. Both Paper Mario and Paper Luigi's abilities set them apart from the other two. Paper Mario and Paper Luigi are able to hammer and jump just like Mario and Luigi but when they use the Copy Block, the copies will split and target all enemies on the field.  Both Paper Mario and Paper Luigi lose a copy for each hit they takes, but can replenish them on their turn before using another battle command. Their jump dodge allows them to flutter, letting them briefly stay in the air longer than Mario and Luigi can.

Levelling up[]

Levelling up is split into two variations in battle. One being the main way to level up, collect EXP from enemies, which is only made exclusive for Mario and Luigi. The Paper bros, way of levelling up is much more reminiscent to that of the first two Paper Mario games, where Paper Mario and Paper Luigi level up by collecting Thrill Points from enemies. Thrill Points act a lot like the Star Points from the first two games, as once Paper Mario and Paper Luigi have 100 Points, then they level up. Unlike Mario and Luigi's system that allows the player to pick a random number to upgrade the selected stat on a roulette, the player can chose which stat can be boosted by 10 points.

Special Attacks[]

Bros. Attacks[]

Players are able to use Bros. Attacks with Mario and Luigi, woking like they did in previous games. However there is a twist, they cannot be activated or collected by finding Attack Pieces in the overworld. Instead, they have to be found and rescued by Nabbit and Popple, who have stolen a bag of prepared and constructed Bros Attacks.

As a matter of fact, two of the Bros Attacks are recycled from Partners in Time and three are recycled from Dream Team.  This is because of votes on the best Bros. Attacks in the series.

Quartet Attacks[]

In addition, a new variation of special attacks called Quartet Attacks can be performed with Paper Mario and Paper Luigi. These atacks will have all four members attacks enemies with a giant cardboard hammer to paperize them before executing attacks. These can be unlocked by collecting Attack Pieces, that have now been called Quartet Jiggies

Papercraft Battles[]

At certain points, the quartet will take part in Papercraft battles. which are the equivalent to the giant battles from the previous two games.

Each time, they'll control different Papercraft characters, each with their own unique abilities, and each of the battles with a Robotic Papercraft Boss.

There's three different camera settings. Auto-Front always stays behind the player's Papercraft, or behind where they're tumbling (to prevent disorientation).

Loose stays looking in a given direction when toggled. and finally, Lock-On locks on the nearest enemy when originally toggled. After destroying that enemy, it looks onto the next nearest enemy. If no enemies are present, the camera reverts to Loose.

Battle Cards[]

Another new addition are Battle Cards, replacing the badge system, also from the previous two games.

The player creates a deck of 15 Battle Cards, one of which will be played each turn. These range from boosting stats, dealing damage, or lowering enemies stats or level. Each one needs a different amount of Star Points to use.

amiibo is compatible with the game, each giving the player a special set of support cards to use in battle. The cards will reset once they've all been played.

There are at least 30 Battle Cards to be found or bought in the entire game. Most of the battle cards are based off, the Badges from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, while the others are based off the Crystal Star attacks from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Features[]

Mario & Luigi: Transfer Pack[]

The Mario & Luigi: Transfer Pack is a feature that allows both Items and Bros. Attacks from both Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team to be transferred to Mario & Luigi: Paper Mario Mix.

By using the Nintendo 3DS's download play, a player can send both Items and Bros. Attacks from both Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team to Mario & Luigi: Paper Mario Mix.

StreetPass[]

The player can battle people's quartets, when ever they are in public or are online.

Multiplayer Mode[]

Multiplayer Mode is a new addition to the series, in which two teams of two, Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario and Paper Luigi can battle each other in Mario Party styled minigames for Shine Sprites. These minigames, take place in four different locations from the past four Mario & Luigi games and Paper Mario games and can be played for high scores that can be shared across the globe online, or through Miiverse.

Miiverse Stamps[]

Players can obtain Miiverse Stamps if they complete 40 of the Expert Challenges in the game, and the player can view them.

Differences from other Mario & Luigi games[]

  • The battle ring is different: there are no turn limits, bosses don't have a different color palette and the rules are completely changed.
  • Badges are replaced by Battle Cards.
  • Lakitu's role is changed in this game. Instead of adding bonus points to stats (upon leveling up), he now gives the quartet quests where the Bros. can help or rescue the Paper People when needed in the story.
  • There are optional crosshairs under the Bros. when an enemy is attacking, as well as a peculiar animation of the character to be attacked preparing to defend himself. This is most likely due to four characters being on the battlefield at once.
  • This is the first game in the series to have Items under categories in the player's bag.
  • This is the first game in the series to have four main playable characters all take a turn in battle.
  • Players can block attacks, similarly to the Paper Mario series.
  • This is the second game to take place entirely in one kingdom and the second to have no portals to another world/kingdom/time. The first being Superstar Saga.
  • This is the first Mario & Luigi game to have a multiplayer mode, that can only be unlocked by completing the game. In fact it is the first Mario RPG to include a multiplayer mode.
  • Luigi is not referred to as Green Stache, due to Bowser finally learning his name at the end of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
  • This is the first game in the series to not be released after a Paper Mario game.
  • Command Blocks are slightly larger than the previous game, and the Bros. stand slightly more apart.

Demo[]

On the day of the game's release in North America, a demo of the game was also released on the Nintendo eShop, making this the second strictly Mario game to have a publicly released demo for download. It uses 1,010 blocks when downloaded, and offers twelve uses. The demo is similar to the E3 demo, in that it has the same options for gameplay:

  • Paper Rescue
  • Papercraft Battle
  • Boss Bash
  • Overworld Exploration

References to other games[]

  • Donkey Kong: One of the Rank-Up bonuses/Bros. upgrades upon leveling up to the higher ranks is known as "Jump Man" which could be a nod to this game as Mario's original name was Jumpman before being renamed.
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island: Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy gets a music remix in a section of Yoshi's Island.
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars: The game ends with a parade of the characters going through the Mushroom Kingdom. Parts of the title and credits theme sound similar to the first eight notes of "Happy Adventure, Delightful Adventure". A Battle Card has the effect of possibly turning enemies into mushrooms, similarly to how some enemies could do the same exact thing in this game, although turning them into mushrooms makes them eatable items rather than being a status effect.
  • Super Smash Bros. (series): One of the missions in the game is called Final Smash, referencing a character's final smash.
  • Paper Mario: The levelling up system returns in this game but can only be used for Paper Mario and Paper Luigi. Parakarry the Clumsy Mail-Koopa returns as a secondary companion in the game.
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: A cover of the battle theme from this game can be heard when Mario and Luigi are fighting. Popple also returns as one of the side antagonists who's goal is to steal the Bros. Attacks in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Super Mario Sunshine: An empty copy of Fludd appears in a box labelled "Gadd Science Inc: We spray, because we pray".
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: Both the Paper Airplane and Paper abilities return from this game. The first time Paper Mario meets Mario, he performs a Spring Jump. Paper Mario's blocking and KO'd animations are the same as from this game. The way the trio gains Star Points by preforming the attacks as good as possible is similar to how Paper Mario and his partners had to "appeal" to the audience to refill the special meter, by also performing the moves as good as possible and by posing stylishly. The stage where the characters stand when they gain EXP after a battle is similar to the one from the battles in this game, down to the yellow stripes on the border of the curtains when they level up.
  • Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time: A cover of the tutorial theme from this game can be heard, which in turn is an arrangement of the Super Mario Bros. theme. The energy beams which unlocks pipes return. The cloud platforms return as well. In the dungeon in Yoshi's Island, Starlow breaks the fourth wall saying to the brothers, "BACK TO ADVENTURE", referencing Stuffwell's catchphrase. The Smash Egg and Mix Flower Bros Items return as well for Bros. Attacks.
  • Super Princess Peach: Princess Peach references her adventure through the Vibe Island from the game.
  • New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo DS): The Blue Shell power up returns in one of the Paper People rescue missions and functions like it did in Mario & Luigi; Bowser's Inside Story. The Mega Mushroom also returns as a Bros Attack, in the game, under the name "Mega Twonk".
  • Yoshi's Island DS: In one of the Toad houses in Gloomy Woods, there is a picture of the babies with the Yoshis celebrating the defeat of Bowser and Kamek, in this game.
  • Super Paper Mario: Paper Luigi's super jump move returns as an altered version of the Jump command, for him only and one of the Expert Challenges is called Super Paper Mario, a nod to this game. Also, Paper Bowser's artwork seen at the end is from this game. A trio of Toads mention that "everyone's game will be over" right after they let Nabbit and Popple escape with the Bros. Attacks.
  • Super Mario Galaxy: Major Burrows returns as the first boss of the game.
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story: A cover of Peach's Castle's theme from this game can be heard, which in turn is an arrangement of the same theme from Super Mario 64. Some of King Boo's attacks are revisions of the Dark Star. His multiplying move resembles that of the Dark Star and his fire breathing attack resembles the Dark Satellmite's beam attack. When Roy and Wendy are fought, one of the moves they perform resembles the Koopa Corps special attack from this game.
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii: The Propeller Mushroom appears in a glass bottle sitting on the desk in Peach's Castle's workshop.
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2: Whittles appear as workers in Gloomy Woods.
  • Super Mario 3D Land: The Boomerang Flower returns as one of the Level Up Ranks.
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2: The Golden Fire Flower returns as a trophy seen in the workshop in Peach's Castle.
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star: Many sprites for the main characters return in this game. Paper Luigi is also given a new sprite set for the game, along with Paper Mario.
  • New Super Mario Bros. U: Nabbit makes an appearance and plays an important role, stealing Bros. Attacks and other items in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team: The Battle System's chase sequences return from this game, except they are heavily altered due to the additions of Paper Mario and Paper Luigi. One of the new Bros. Attacks, known as Mega Thwonk, features Luigi as a giant, using the same model from the Giant Battles in this game. There are also two returning Bros. Attacks originally from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Similar to giant battles, Papercraft battles allow players to win 4 items. Brocks and Shelltops also return in this game.
  • Super Mario 3D World: Bullies retain their design from this game.

References to later games[]

  • Super Mario Maker: Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario appear as a costume for the game. The reasons why Paper Luigi wasn't added as a costume in the game is unknown.
  • Paper Mario: Color Splash: Some enemies start out with copies of themselves, in different stacks like in Paper Mario Mix. Also, the Koopalings have their first paper appearance after it being foreshadowed in that game.

References to other media[]

  • Donkey Kong Country (TV series): Kaptin Skurvy is the secondary antagonist of the game, along with his minions. Making this to be the first game to have both a secondary antagonist and enemies from a television series

Trivia[]

  • Just like Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Mario & Luigi: Paper Mario Mix is the only Mario game to receive an E10 rating by the ESRB, the first being Mario Strikers Charged and second being Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The ACB rated this as PG for the same reason.
  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Mario Mix is the third 3DS Mario game that received a patch, the first being Mario Kart 7 and second being Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The patch removes all the glitches alongside the out of bounds glitches from the game and was released during May 2016 two months after the game's release.
  • This is the first game in the Mario & Luigi series where the final boss is not have any form of Bowser.
  • Starlow references the Year of Luigi after Luigi is left alone in Gloomy Woods.
  • Paper Mario gets his voice back from both Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario.
  • .Both Paper Luigi and Paper Bowser talk again ever since the first three Paper Mario games.

Development[]

In the past, the Mario & Luigi games primarily used two buttons, but the developers wanted to break new ground by making a third button active in combat. Characters were brainstormed until the developers thought of a second Mario, where the Paper Mario character would fit the third character role neatly. This implementation has then turn the idea of a crossover.

Though Paper Luigi was considered to be the fourth character, the developers thought that adding a fourth button for a fourth character will be too difficult and complicated to enjoy the game. According to Kobayashi, the trickiest thing to implement in a crossover was to make Paper Mario, a main character, stand out. However they tried out a prototype of the game, and found that controlling all four characters without the dash button, was a bad idea.

Though the first draft of the story involved the characters going back and forth between the Mushroom Kingdom and the paper world with many twists to the narrative, the developers thought it was too complex and that no one will enjoy it, so that it was rewritten many times to be simplified, where greater emphasis was placed on the character interactions between each other. Though emphasis has been placed on Paper Mario to make him stand out, the developers wanted equal attention to all characters, where they mention that it was a "big job" to balance everything. The developers also mentioned interest in adding original characters to the plot, but decided against it since they already have many characters to work with, and it would be too challenging to fit them at an appropriate appearance in the story.

The E3 trailer showed a lot of stuff that was scrapped in the game, the Trio Attacks and the unoriginal characters and bosses. The game was also meant to be called Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, but according to Shigeru Miyamoto, he said that the title would sound like a carbon copy of the 1996 film Space Jam.

AlphaDream and Intelligent Systems showed a second draft of the story's premise to the fan service and received very negative feedback. However they asked some of the hard core fans of the series and told them which characters they should add from both of the series, but scrap the two dimensions thing, since it would get tedious and boring.

When asked about the gameplay, battle designer Jun Iwasaki emphasized on narrowing the focus. His first thought was making use of three buttons, which were promptly brainstormed with lots of ideas on paper, until the developers chose the one that looked the best and tested them with a prototype. Hiroshi Ohata, the battle programmer, explained that battles are first created without animations and other visual effects. He has stated that they always make sure the gameplay is very responsive at a basic level, so they perform many experiments to test the gameplay elements. What works and what doesn't is based on people who playtest the game during development.

Yoko Shimomura, the composer for the game's music, felt that since Paper Mario is joining the battle, she opted for a lighter, more upbeat tune to the game's soundtrack. When asked which music is her favorite, she stated that her songs are "like her children" and is unable to choose one, though she did say that Mountaintop Secrets, the background music for Mount Brrr, "has a certain fantastical atmosphere that isn't usually found in the Mario world, and having the opportunity to put a song with that kind of feel into a Mario game is something that's quite unique to the Mario & Luigi series, I think."

Natsuko Kemi, rhe game's graphics designer, emphasized on the details of the animations and graphics on the characters. For example, Luigi's walk cycles in based off his walk cycles in Luigi's Mansion.
