Glass Joe is a recurring character in the Punch-Out!! series, and is always the weakest boxer that Little Mac faces in the games he appears in. He first appeared in the Arcade version of Punch-Out!!, and has become a staple of the series since. His name is a pun on "glass jaw", a boxing term referred to a weakling knocked down with a well-placed uppercut.
He hails from Paris, France, and following the stereotype of French people being cowardly following the events of World War II, Glass Joe is indeed cowardly. He has very poor offense, close to no defense, and in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, says in between rounds that he's getting too old for boxing and wants to retire. Additionally, his boxing record is abysmal, with 99 losses and only one win by KO (that KO said to be the result of a freak accident against Nick Bruiser). In spite of this, Glass Joe is passionate about the sport and his nationality, and has a love for baguettes, a type of French bread.
Because of his poor boxing abilities, he serves as sort of training for the player, letting them get to know the basics and controls of the game. While he can block attacks from Little Mac, he will only guard his head or his body, and he can alternate between hitting them to rack up damage.

Punch-Out!! (Arcade)[]
Glass Joe first appears in Punch-Out!! on the Arcade as the first opponent. He is extremely easy and serves as a practice opponent for new players; he will rarely ever attack the player and almost never dodges their punches. He also lacks a unique attack unlike the other boxers in the game. Between his poor defense and offense, he is very easy to knock down.
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!![]

Glass Joe returns in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, once again as the first opponent Little Mac faces. He is ranked #2 in the Minor Circuit. Though he will rarely attack, he can block the player's punches if they don't strike him where he isn't currently guarding. He attacks with jabs and hooks, though these are weak and slow, being easy to react to.
Glass Joe does have a special attack, known as the Taunt Punch. He takes a step back, raises his arm twice, and comes back at Little Mac before throwing a jab, though it isn't stronger than his normal jabs. With proper timing, Little Mac can strike Glass Joe just as he comes back to him to knock him down, and with proper timing it can even result in a knockout. He will also be instantly knocked down from a Star Punch.
Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]

Glass Joe returns in the Wii version of Punch-Out!!. Unlike previous games, where he spoke English, he speaks legitimate French. Like previous games, he is the first opponent Little Mac faces, being ranked #3 in the Minor Circuit. He retains his frailness from the previous entries, and is very easy to beat thanks to his poor defense and offense. He also retains his Taunt Punch from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, and additionally says "Vive la France !" ("Long live France!") while doing it. It can be countered the same way; striking Glass Joe in his stomach at the proper time. When Glass Joe is knocked down, retro sound effects similar to those in the Arcade and NES installments of the series are heard.
Glass Joe is also rematched in Title Defense mode, where Little Mac must defend his championship belt against all of the previous challengers. After Little Mac KO'ed him in the first battle, Glass Joe had 100 losses to his name, and the WVBA let him use special headgear to protect his head. This negates all blows to the head from Little Mac, forcing him to use weaker body blows to damage him. Glass Joe also uses faster punches and can mix up his timing to throw the player off. However, the player is able to knock the headgear off of Glass Joe by hitting him with a Star Punch, allowing him to get some punches at his head. Lastly, while his Taunt Punch can still be countered, it isn't an instant knockdown like in his first battle.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]
Glass Joe appears as a Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, obtainable in both versions by purchasing it at the Trophy Shop.

Glass Joe appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Novice-class (★) Spirit. He is a Primary Neutral-type Spirit, and will increase overall stats when equipped. His Spirit Battle is a Stamina battle against Luigi, who will constantly taunt.
His Spirit uses artwork from the Wii version of Punch-Out!!.

Glass Joe is represented as two Trophies and Spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one representing his normal appearance and the other representing his appearance in Title Defense mode in the Wii version of Punch-Out!!.
His normal Spirit is a Novice-type Spirit that make the user's neutral attack deal 20% more damage and knockback when equipped. The Spirit battle is a Stamina battle against Luigi, who will avoid conflict.
His Title Defense Spirit is an Ace-type Spirit that lets the user start the battle with a Back Shield when equipped. The Spirit battle is also a Stamina battle against Luigi who will avoid attacking, but he also has a Back Shield and increased ground and air speed, referencing Glass Joe's difficulty spike in Title Defense.
