Super Mario Altered is an upcoming 3D platforming game developed by Lazy Studios and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Swtich. The twentieth title in the mainline Super Mario series after Super Mario Maker 2, the game seeks to differentiate itself from other Mario platformer games by adding in elements of metroidvanias, like an open world and larger focus on the game's combat. The game's release date hasn't been announced as of right now.

Gameplay[]

Super Mario Altered seeks to differ itself from other 3D Mario games through its gameplay. Unlike other 3D Mario games, the entire game is interconnected, and players can freely go from one area to another. Though at first some locations may be blocked off, by obtaining new abilities and defeating bosses, you can gain access to new areas.

Mario, alongside his normal abilities to jump on foes to attack enemies, is armed with his Hammer to take out nearby foes. This hammer will be your primary weapon throughout the game. As the game progress, Mario will gain access to upgrades for his hammer, alongside various new techniques through the use of Badges.

Mario has a limited amount of Heart Points that goes down if he is hit by an attack. If Mario loses all of his HP, the game is over, and the player will need to restore at a previous save spot. HP is restored by using healing items or going to Save Spots, and can be increased by finding Heart Mushrooms scattered around the world in hidden areas. Collecting 3 of them grants you another heart to your current HP.

Throughout your adventure, you'll obtain Coins. These can be used in various locations to purchase items from shops. If you are defeated, you will drop any coins you obtained prior to saving, but returning to that area allows you to get back your coins.

Throughout his adventures, Mario will come across various characters who will join him on his adventure. These are Partners. Partners provide Mario with various new abilities, which are useful for navigating to new areas, or helping out with combat. Often these abilities use up Partner Points, which can be restored overtime or by attacking enemies, though you can also increase the capacity by finding Partner Flowers scattered around the world in hidden areas. You can switch between your partners on the fly, even mid-combat. You can also unlock upgrades for them, granting them new abilities.

Story[]

Prologue[]

The story begins in Bowser’s Castle. Bowser is contemplating plans to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, having failed time and time again. Kamek attempting to help brings up the story of a mysterious alternate dimension known as the Darkened Kingdom, that can only be accessed through the use of a powerful and ancient scepter. Bowser is interested in this, and just in the knick of time, Bowser Jr. and a group of his minions barge into his throne room. Bowser Jr. pulls out a mysterious stick he found while exploring, handing it to Bowser. Bowser laughs, exclaiming how he has a new plan to take over the kingdom.

Kamek grabs the scepter, poking around with it and waving it around, but he finds that he is unable to find anything to do with. Kamek wonders if it is even the scepter they are looking for. Bowser is angered, and in a fit of rage, stomps on the scepter. Suddenly dark magic emanates from the broken scepter. Kamek, scared out of his mind, hides behind Bowser. Bowser looks on, as the magic forms a shadowy figure. She strikes a deal with Bowser, saying she can help her take over the Mushroom Kingdom and get rid of Mario Bros. Bowser agrees and the two shake hands.

Suddenly the switches to Mario's house. Everything seems peaceful, Mario is napping on an armchair, Luigi is seen reading a book, and Yoshi is sleeping on the ground. Luigi mentions that Bowser hasn't tried to capture Peach in months, even saying that he may have given up. However, quite ironically, an explosion is heard from nearby, startling the three. Toad bursts through the door, exclaiming that Peach is being kidnapped! Mario, the headstrong hero he is, runs out, seeing Toad Town and the castle under attack by Bowser’s forces. He makes his way towards the castle, Luigi, Yoshi and Toad trailing behind.

Mario storms his way towards Peach’s Castle, finding Bowser in the middle of capturing Princess Peach. Though Mario attempts to stop him, a mysterious force field knocks him away. The shadowy figure from before appears, revealing her true form. Her name is Queen Minerva, the ruler of the Darkened Kingdom. She laughs, as she summons a magic portal, sucking in Peach, Mario, Luigi and everyone else near into it. The screen fades to black as Minerva and Bowser laugh.

Chapter 1[]

Mario is seen unconscious in a beach. A small cat-like girl is seen walking over to him, poking at his unconscious body. Mario then wakes up, jumping in the air, causing the girl to be scared and running away. Following her into a forest, after defeating a few enemies, Mario catches up to her. She introduces herself as Meowli. After staring at him, she seems to realize something, and asks Mario to follow her to her house in Dyre Town. Suddenly they notice something, some kind of person stuck in the ground, surrounded by Goombas. The Goombas all rush at Mario, but are defeated fairly easily. Mario pulls out the person and it turns out it's Toad. Toad is just as confused as Mario to how he got here, but follow him and Meowli to Dire Town.

Upon making it to Dyre Town, the both of them see trouble! It's Bowser Jr., who's attacking another cat. Bowser Jr. notices Mario, and challenges him to a fight. Halfway through Bowser Jr.'s fight, Bowser Jr. activates some upgrades that make him immune to jumps. Suddenly the cat boy that was being attacked from before is hit in the head by a hammer falling from the sky. Meowli grabs the hammer and tosses it at Mario, allowing him to eventually defeat Bowser Jr. After being defeated, Bowser Jr. angrily flies away. Meowli thanks Mario, as the cat boy from before is staring at him, enigmatically. The cat boy excitedly runs toward Mario, saying that's he's some kind of great hero named Leo. Mario doesn't recognize the name, and says they aren't the same person. Meowlo is saddened by this, and he explains some kind of story.

Long ago there were two siblings, Leo and Marisa, who were seen as heroes in the Darkened Kingdom. Together, the two of them were able to keep the kingdom safe. That was until the the evil queen, Minerva, came to the kingdom. The two siblings tried to storm her castle and stop her, and the two never came back. Ever since then, the kingdom has came under Minerva's rule, the sky had permanently darkened and most of the people are now gone. They are the two people left living in Dyre Town. Meowlo wishes one day he can be just as strong as Leo and Marisa, and be able to bring the Darkened Kingdom back to its former self.

Mario is moved by the story and now wants to defeat Minerva, not only to save Princess Peach, but to bring the Darkened Kingdom back to what it once was. Night comes, and Meowli invites Mario to stay at their house for the night. Toad decides to stay in a house nearby (which is seemingly abandoned).

After a good night's rest, Mario is awoken is screaming. Running out, he sees some kind of monster with Meowli in its jaws. Meowlo is already outside, trying to fend off the beast, jumping at it. However, it smacks him out the air. Mario grabs him as he falls back to the ground. The monster then walks away into the forest. Meowlo runs towards the forest, only the stop, saying that no one has ever escaped the Florameleon before. Mario, seeing this transpire, runs into the forest to save Meowli. Meowlo is astonished by this, and chases after him.

Mario makes his way through much of the forest by himself, taking down the enemies within. Eventually he comes into some tough vines. Distant yelling can be heard, and Mario seems to recognize the voice. Meowlo finally manages to catch up to Mario, also noticing the vines. Then he comes up with an idea. Hopping into Mario's back, he tells Mario to charge into the vines. Mario does so, and with his shield, manages to break through the vines., where they find whoever was trapped on the other side. It's Toadette! She and Mario reunite, and Meowlo asks if Toadette has seen a giant monster. Toadette tells the two that she saw a massive creature go inside of that flowery cave. She also hands Mario a journal, which she says will be useful as it holds a map of all the locations they've been to, and can be used to save his progress. They say their goodbyes, as Mario and Meowlo make their way towards the cave.

After venturing through and fighting off the various monsters inside, Mario finally make it to the Florameleon's lair. Mario sees that not only has it captured Meowli, but also Yoshi. The Florameleon sees its intruders, before jumping down from the wall and roaring. A boss fight insues, but the Florameleon ends up defeated, falling over. As it does, the vines holding Meowli and Yoshi disappear, alongside some others that appear throughout the surrounding area. Meowlo hugs his sister, and Mario reunites with Yoshi.

With the Florameleon defeated and Meowli saved, Mario decides he's gonna leave and find his way to Minerva. However, before he leaves, Meowlo interrupts him, and decides that he wants to go with him. Though Meowli is a little hesitant, Meowlo realizes that if he wants to keep her safe, and be like his idols, he has to travel with Mario and defeat Minerva. Meowli understands, wishing the two the best of luck.

Chapter 2[]

Leaving Dyre Town, Mario and Meowlo make their way back through Windor Plains, where Meowlo notices that some vines that the Florameleon had made are now gone, opening up a path. Going through they make it to Sandin Canyon, a large sprawling desert. Noticeably, a large tower can be seen in the distance, though it seems to be inaccessible. Throughout the area, they find mysterious Stone Tablets in different shapes, grabbing and holding onto them.

Navigating through it they eventually make it to some ruins, where they find an unusual sight. Some kind of mermaid! She's appears to be very tired, coughing, and crawling slowly on the desert floor. Mario and Meowlo run towards her, asking her if she is okay. The mermaid is unable to muster the strength to say anything besides the word, "water". Meowlo knows they can't go to Azure Coast as that's too far away, but says he heard the story of the Curewater Spring hidden somewhere in the ruins, and telling Mario that they could save her if they give her some water from the ruins.

Looking around, Meowlo finds some kind of table with four symbols, and a message. "Shape the symbols into the altar to open up the entrance to the Sol Ruins." Meowlo realizes that those stone tablets they've been holding onto are actually keys to the ruins! After obtaining them all and putting them onto the altar. The ground shakes, as the entrance appears in front of them. Mario and Meowlo run in, determined to save the sick mermaid.

Climbing their way up the ruins, they eventually make it to the roof, where they finally find the Curewater Spring. Mario then sees someone on the other side of the spring. It's his brother Luigi, with a mysterious girl wearing a similar outfit to him. Luigi is scared out of his mind, with the girl seemingly threatening him. Meowlo asks what's going on, and the girl facing him and Mario. She introduces herself as Marisa, but becomes angry at Mario for impersonating her brother, immediately challenging him to a fight. Mario defeats her, and she suddenly leaves, not saying anything after. Luigi hugs Mario with tears in her eyes, but Meowlo explains how he and Mario are in a hurry. After getting some of the water from the Curewater Spring, and hurry down to the desert.

Mario and Meowlo finally make it back to the mermaid, quickly pouring the water onto her. Suddenly she feels super energizes, jumping into the air. She thanks Mario, introducing herself as Princess Polyp. Then, suddenly she starts panic, realizing she has forgotten something, asking the two for help.

She explains that her mother, Queen Anemone had become corrupted by Minerva's magic, slowly transforming her into a dangerous tyrant. She had imprisoned much of the people of her home of Aquapolis, and threatens to do the same for those who even attempt to come inside her kingdom's water. Not agreeing with this, Polyp decided to run away from home and seek out help outside the kingdom. However, she ended up going to far, and ended up in the desert. Mario and Meowlo decide to help her out, and Polyp joins Mario. Polyp says that the entrance to Aquapolis is in Azure Coast, so Mario makes his way toward that location.

Mario dives into the water with Polyp's help, eventually finding the entrance, a mysterious hole. Travelling through the underwater tunnel, they make it to the city of Aquapolis. However, much of it had become abandoned. They navigate their way through the crystalline buildings, and fight off against the Merites that guard her, before eventually making it to the Queen herself. Polyp tries to explain the situation to her mother, what she is doing is wrong and she has brought Mario to try and break her out. Queen Anemone however, doesn't listen, furious that her own daughter has betrayed her and her kingdom by bringing someone from the outside world into the kingdom. Queen Anemone pulls out a large trident, and a fight starts.

As Mario & Polyp fight Queen Anemone and damage her, small dark clouds eventually form near her. Polyp realizes those must be the things hypnotizing, instructing Mario to help her shoot at them. After finally destroying the clouds, Queen Anemone is defeated, falling to the floor. Her color changes from a dark purple to a brighter pink. Polyp goes over to her, as Queen Anemone wakes up, finally back to her normal self. Polyp reunites with her mother, hugging her. She then explains what had happened while she was hypnotized, and she was saved by Mario when she had ventured out too far, and together the two broke her out of her curse. Queen Anemone is astounded by this, thanking her daughter for doing so much to help break her free of Minerva's curse, but also Mario, for saving her daughter in her time of need. For that, she gives Mario the Merite Mark, given to those who have done an incredible service to the kingdom of Aquapolis, and allowing Mario to open the Merite Gate. Queen Anemone apologizes for everything she had done, freeing the people of Aquapolis, and allowing Mario to come into the kingdom whenever he wants.

Mario, Meowlo and Polyp make their way to the Merite Gate, holding up the Merite Mark. The ground shakes, as the gate opens, opening up the rest of Azure Coast. Before they go through however, Queen Anemone appears, alongside many of the other Merites that had been recently freed. Polyp says that she wants to join Mario on his adventure and stop Minerva to keep Aquapolis safe. Queen Anemone understands, knowing that Mario will keep her daughter safe from harm. Polyp swims over to her mother and hugs her, before saying goodbye, as she and Mario make their way through the gate to continue their adventure.

Chapter 3[]

After leaving the cave, Mario and co. make their way through the rest of Azure Coast, and eventually finding the entrance to the Undermines. They navigate through the caverns, though see that much of them seem to be blocked off by large rocks. Eventually, the three fall into a pit. Navigating to the center, they find what seems to be a pile of metal. Meowlo is curious, touching it, causing it to suddenly activate. The pile of metal was actually a robot! Its red eye glares at Mario, as it suddenly roars, attacking the three. However, it is defeated rather easily, falling over. Mario sighs in relief, but the three notice that there is no escape from the large they're in.

Suddenly once more, the mysterious robot from before gets up. Meowlo is ready to fight it again, but Polyp stops him, thinking that the robot might just be confused. The robot analyzes the two, then looks at Mario. The robot simply says, "Gearstop", and both Meowlo and Polyp decide that that will be his name. Mario nods in agreement. Suddenly Gearstop grab Mario, tossing him into the air and placing him into a compartment on his back. Mario then takes control of him, using him to destroy a large rock in their path, allowing them to escape.

Mushroom Kingdom Enemies[]

Enemy Description Location
GoombaNewAltered(transparent)

Goomba

Familiar Mushroom-like foes, Goombas are among the weakest enemies you will face on your adventure. Upon seeing you they will chase after you, attempting to ram into you and deal damage. A single jump or a swing from your hammer will take them out easily.
  • Windor Plains
  • Jango Jungle
  • Overgrown Cavern
  • Azure Coast
ParagoombaNewAltered(transparent)

Paragoomba

Goombas possessing wings, these flying enemies can be found hovering around areas before chasing you if they see you. Jumping on them removes their wings and turns them into a normal Goomba, but a hammer swing will take them out instantly.
  • Jango Jungle
  • Sandin Canyon
  • Dragoon Summit
Koopa Troopa Among Bowser's most common minions, Koopa Troopas are a fairly standard enemy. When seeing you they will chase after you and attack with punches and kicks. Their shells provide them extra armor from your hammer swings, allowing them to take a few blows before being defeated. However, jumping on them will cause them to retreat into their shells, allowing them to be used as projectiles in combat.
  • Jango Jungle
  • Overgrown Cavern
  • Sandin Canyon
  • Sol Ruins
  • Azure Coast
Paratroopa Koopa Troopas with wings, Paratroopas are more powerful that their normal counterparts. Like Koopas, they chase after you on sight, but instead of punches, they will retract into their shell and perform a dive bomb to deal damage. Hitting them with your hammer will cause them to fly backwards but not deal any damage (except to those in the shell's way), but a perfectly timed jump or shield bash will cause them to lose their wings, turning them into normal Koopas.
  • Sol Ruins
Spiny Small enemies with spiked shells, Spinies attack on sight, charging towards Mario. Of course, due to their spikes, they cannot be jumped on, dealing damage to Mario if he attempts to do so. However, they are still vulnerable to hammer swings and other attacks.
  • Sandin Canyon
  • Sol Ruins
Lakitu A member of the Koopa Troop, Lakitus ride on their signature clouds, and attack from above. They toss down Spiny Eggs that, if left along for too long, will hatch into Spinies. They can't be jumped on, so use your hammer. Lakitus are out of reach most of the time, so a ranged attack is needed to hit them.
  • Dragoon Summit
Hammer Bro. Among the most elite of Bowser's soldiers, Hammer Bros. are agile Koopas wielding hammers. They attack by tossing these hammers as arcing projectiles, before jumping away. They can take a few hits, and if Mario tries to perform several hammer swings on them in a row, they can retaliate with a spinning hammer strike.
  • ?
Boomerang Bro. Among the most elite of Bowser's soldiers, Boomerang Bros. are cousins of the Hammer Bros., though wield boomerangs instead of hammers. They will throw these boomerangs, which will return to them after flying a distance. They can take a few hits, and if Mario tries to perform several hammer swings on them in a row, they can retaliate with a spinning boomerang strike.
  • Aquapolis
Fire Bro. Among the most elite of Bowser's soldiers, Fire Bros. are cousins of the Hammer Bros., though wield fireballs instead of hammers. They will throw these fireballs, which bounce along the ground and burn Mario on touch. They can take a few hits, and if Mario tries to perform several hammer swings on them in a row, they can retaliate with a fire wave attack.
  • Lavalandia
Dry Bones A Koopa Troopa, or at least what's left of it. Dry Bones will chase after the player. Often they'll appear out of the ground in an attempt to ambush you. If they are hit, they will fall into pieces, their heads running away. If you let them go for too long, they will eventually piece back together and continue attacking you.
  • Sandin Canyon
  • The Undermines
Monty Mole Small mole-like enemies, Monty Moles are mostly found in underground areas. They act similar to Goombas, chasing Mario when he comes near, but are noticeably faster. They'll often attempt to ambush Mario by suddenly popping out of the ground. A singly jump or hammer swing takes them down easily.
  • The Undermines
Rocky Wrench Monty Moles often found on airships, Rocky Wrenches pop out of manholes and attack when Mario is near. They attack by tossing wrenches, before diving down and hiding from damage. Attack when they pop out, shoot a projectile, or reflect their wrenches to easily defeat them.
  • ?
Flaptor Bird-like enemies, Flaptors are often found flying around or nesting in trees or rocks. They will hover above Mario before slamming down, damaging him if they are in his way. However, they are vulnerable for a time while on the ground.
  • Jango Jungle
  • Dragoon Summit
Ninji Stealthy ninja-like foes, Ninji will attack by ambushing Mario, appearing from a cloud of smoke to strike. If they miss, they are left vulnerable for a bit, before disappearing and attacking again. Hit them out of the air to defeat them instantly.
  • ?
Piranha Plant Carnivorous plant-like enemies, Piranha Plants are immobile enemies often found in grassy areas. When they see Mario, they will attack by shooting fireballs at them. If they come close, they will attack with a bite. They are however, quite weak, especially once you gain the ability to attack them with projectiles.
  • Jango Jungle
  • Overgrown Cavern
Pokey Tall cactus-like foes, Pokeys are often found in more desertous areas. They are composed of many spiked segments, and attack by hopping towards you and occasionally falling over. Hitting a Pokey with your hammer allows you to knock the segments away, but hitting the head is needed to fully defeat it. If the head is left alive for too long, it will regrow its segments.
  • Sandin Canyon
Cheep Cheep Fish-like enemies always found in watery areas, Cheep Cheeps are often found swimming around and minding their own business. They don't directly attack Mario, but deal damage if Mario runs into them. You can't jump on them, but a hammer swing will take them out easily.
  • Azure Coast
Blooper Squid-like enemies found in watery areas, Bloopers are often found swimming around at first, but will chase after Mario when he comes near. Hammer swings will take them down in a few hits.
  • Azure Coast
Boo Ghost-like foes, Boos will slowly chase after the player, but become invisible and freeze if the player looks at them. If they get close, they'll attack with a licking attack, knocking Mario away. They are invulnerable to most of Mario's attacks, but will disappear if they come into contact with light.
  • ?
Bob-Omb Walking explosives, Bob-Ombs will attack on sight, lighting their fuses and charging at Mario. If they are hit, they will stop moving, and can be used as an exploding projectile. You can even use it to break Hard Blocks, which Mario cannot normally break.
  • The Undermines
Chain Chomp Dog-like creatures attached to chains, Chain Chomps are tough enemies. When Mario comes near, it will bark at him, before reeling back and lunging straight at him. They possess an abnormally high defense, immune to most attacks, though a hammer swing will send them flying backwards and into nearby enemies. However, they are limited to their chains, which are attached to a stake. Destroying this stake will set the Chain Chomp free, causing it to jump away. Heavier attacks, especially from Gearstop, will also destroy him.
  • ?
Bullet Bill Bullet-like projectiles fired from cannons, Bullet Bills fly at Mario directly, attempting to charge into him and explode. Though weak health-wise, their explosions can send you flying backwards. However, you can also direct them into flying into obstacles, or other enemies, to damage them.
  • Lavalandia

Darkened Kingdom Enemies[]

Enemy Description Location
Nuttack Nut-like creatures, Nuttacks are small creatures that live in forested areas, guarding it from intruders. Upon sight they will chase after the player, attempt to charge into them with their helmets. Due to their armored helmets, they are immune to your jumping attacks, alongside projectiles. However, hitting them with your hammer will knock them over, leaving their undersides vulnerable to being hit or jumped on. Fire will also destroy their helmet and leave them vulnerable.
  • Jango Jungle
  • Overgrown Cavern
Nuttergunner These Nuttacks, known as Nuttergunners, are equipped with what appear to be a cannon made out of wood. They fire Spiny Nuts at Mario from afar, and will use their gun to completely block attacks. However, using Meowlo's Shield Bash, you can send the projectiles they fire straight back at them, taking them out in a single hit. Fire will also destroy their weapons and leave them vulnerable.
  • Jango Jungle
  • Overgrown Cavern
Nutcrasher Large Nuttacks, with bodies resembling coconuts and wielding large logs, Nutcrackers are the first large enemy Mario will face. Boasting high health, it's slow, but it boasts powerful attacks, including a powerful smash attack, and an earthquake that releases a shockwave along the ground.
  • Overgrown Cavern
Vipera The main soldiers of Minerva's army, Viperas are similar in appearance to her, being snake-like creatures with claws. They have the ability to throw balls of energy at Mario, attacking him from a distance. They are pretty weak, but they can charge up a damaging claw slash if you stay too close too them. Try and reflect their energy balls back at them.
  • Overgrown Cavern
  • Sol Ruins
  • The Undermines
Serpera Possessing small wings, Serperas are an aerial variant of the Vipera. Like their ground-based variants, they attack from a distance, launching balls of energy. It can be a bit hard to hit them, as they actively avoid you, but you can toss a projectile at them to take them out easily.
  • The Undermines
Bowya Large-hatted bow-wielding soldiers, Bowyas fire arrows into the air, which rain down on Mario. Warning circles appear where the arrows will land, so as long as you keep moving, you'll be able to dodge them. They never move, so if you can get up to them they are left completely vulnerable.
  • Sol Ruins
Armoren Among Minerva's most skilled troops, Armorens are armored warriors equipped with shields and maces. Their armor makes them immune to all attacks, except from behind. Primarily they will chase after Mario, bashing him with their shields, and occasionally charging up and performing a spin attack. They can only be hit with armor-breaking attacks, or by hitting them from behind after they perform a spin attack.
  • Sol Ruins
Dark Armoren Considered Minerva's royal guards, Dark Armorens are larger and more powerful that their normal Armoren counterparts. Like normal Armorens, they are immune to most damage, with the exception of their backs. Alongside their shield bash, they have a charge attack, and their spin attack now releases a shockwave along the ground.
  • Minerva's Palace
Flame Magican Mysterious flame-wielding witches, Flame Magicans harness the power of fire. They attack by teleporting, before charging up and launching either one large exploding fireball, or three fireballs in a spread shot. Both attacks burn Mario, causing him to run uncontrollably.
  • Lavalandia
Ice Magican Mysterious ice-wielding witches, Ice Magicans harness the power of cold. They attack by teleporting, before charging up and launching either an ice ball, or raining down icicles above Mario. Both attacks freeze Mario, leaving him vulnerable to attacks.
  • Snowpoint Peaks
Dark Magican Considers leaders of the Magican, Dark Magican are the most powerful of their kind. Able to wield dark magic, they attack by teleporting, launch either an exploding ball of dark energy, or summoning reinforcements. Hit them before they summon to prevent the enemies from appearing.
  • Minerva's Palace
FloramiteNewAltered

Floramite

Small creates that resemble the Florameleon, Floramites are wild creatures known for their erratic movement. With their coiled tails, they are capable of bouncing on it similar to a spring. They jump wildly, occasionally lunging at the player to attack them. This makes them a bit hard to hit, though a well-timed hammer swing will take them out in one hit.
  • Overgrown Cavern
Merite Guard Soldiers of Aquapolis' army, Merite Guards are loyal to their queen and will defend her at all costs. Swimming towards Mario, they wield tridents, eithering attacking with strikes, or a lunging stab. These tridents provide them with great distance, so jumping is effective as they will always outrange your hammer.
  • Azure Coast
  • Aquapolis
Merite Mage Magic-users of Aquapolis' army, Merite Mages act as long-ranged supporters. They can summon up to three balls of energy, which will swirl around them, before flying at the player. Hit them with a projectile to stun or attack them, as they will swim away if you get close.
  • Aquapolis
Vampin Bat-like enemies found in caves, Vampins will fly around Mario when they disturb their sleep. After a bit of time, they will fly down and bite at him, latching onto him and draining his health, while restoring any health they lost.
  • The Undermines
Arachnife Spider-like creatures, Arachnives are equipped with sickle-like blades for legs. They will often drop down from their thread, and slash at Mario if he's nearby. However, they will also occasionally drop down and attack him directly, spinning its blades while chasing him down. Though it can be hard to hit them with a hammer, a jump or two will also take them down.
  • The Undermines
Goleminer Evil rock creatures, Goleminers are hired by Lavalandia as workers, either digging through the mines to create entrances and space for the park, or as guards. Their attacks include a powerful smash attack, alongside the ability to pull out and roll boulders as projectiles, and their large size and tough defense can make them hard to destroy. If they are hit enough or with a powerful enough attack (like Gearstop's punches or other armor breaking moves) their hard bodies will break, exposing a crystal that can be destroyed to defeat them.

Bosses[]

Mid-Bosses[]

Name Description
Bowser Jr. The first boss Mario faces off with, Bowser Jr. is a familiar foe Mario has faced off with in the past. Attacking Dyre Town with his Jr. Clown Car, he challenges Mario to a fight when he is interrupted after bullying Meowlo. He isn't very challenging, more meant as a tutorial for the bosses to come.
  • Phase 1: In Phase 1, Bowser Jr. primarily attacks by spinning the Jr. Clown Car with its boxing gloves extended, damaging Mario if he comes too close. Eventually, the Clown Car will become tired, leaving Bowser Jr. vulnerable to damage. He will occasionally change tactics by flying into the air and attempting to land on Mario, but this can be dodged by moving, and also leaves Bowser Jr. vulnerable to damage.
  • Phase 2: In Phase 2, Bowser Jr. gains a spiky covering on top of the Jr. Clown Car, making him immune to Mario's jumping attacks. Thankfully, Mario's hammer conveniently falls from the sky, Meowli tossing it to Mario to help him in the fight. This phase acts identical to Phase 1, but now players need to use the hammer instead of jumping on Bowser Jr.
MarisaNewAltered

Marisa (1st)

Found in the Sol Ruins, Marisa starts a fight with Mario after she believes he is impersonating her brother. Because of her quick movements, she is a tricky and somewhat challenging boss.
  • Phase 1: In Phase 1, Marisa will chase after the player, attacking with her wrench. Dodge these attacks, and retaliate, as she will pause for a brief moment after attacking. If hit too much, she will back dash. She'll also attack by shooting iceballs at Mario, stunning him and leaving him vulnerable to Marisa's attacks. Her most powerful attack is a swift dash slash, which is telegraphed by her briefly crouching. Jump at the right time and she will be left vulnerable. If at any point Mario goes into the water in the middle of the arena, Marisa will jump in the air and freeze the water, causing damage.
  • Phase 2: In Phase 2, Marisa will take advantage of the pillar in the middle of the arena. Clinging onto it, she'll begin tossing down iceballs, damaging Mario on touch, and if they hit the ground, create icicles. After some time, she'll drop down and slam her wrench directly on top of Mario, though this will leave her vulnerable. Other than this new attack, she acts similarly to how she does in Phase 1.

Main Bosses[]

Name Description
FlorameleonNewAltered

Florameleon

The first main boss Mario will face on his adventure, the Florameleon was once the protecter of Jango Jungle before it went crazy after it was put under Minerva's control. Hiding out in the Overgrown Cavern, it has captured Meowli and Yoshi, in the hopes of turning them into its next snack. True to being the first boss, it is rather simple, but still a challenge, while teaching the player about Meowlo's abilities.
  • Phase 1: Phase 1 is the simplest of its attack patterns. It attacks primarily by attempting to jump on the player and crushing them. However, after the attack, it is left vulnerable, and a single hit will put it into a stun. Hit for too long and it will roar, pushing the player back. If the players is too close to it, it can attack with a claw slash.
  • Phase 2: Upon losing 1/3 of its health, Florameleon will change up its tactics. It will start its attack by spitting out small seeds, which if not destroyed, will sprout into Floramites to attack you. After doing so, it will charge up, before launching its tongue at the player. While in this state, it cannot be hit, as it will block all attacks with its large arms. However, using Meowlo's Shield Bash on his tongue will cause it to fly back into the Florameleon's face and temporarily stun it, leaving it vulnerable to damage. Like in Phase 1, it roars after getting up from an attack, and can perform a claw slash if you're nearby.
  • Phase 3: Upon losing 2/3 of its health, the Florameleon becomes much more aggressive. Taking from both of its previous phases, it will attack by attempting to jump on the player, though this time multiple times in a row. It will also block oncoming attacks, and will also occasionally fire seeds into the air to summon Floramites. Now, when it performs a tongue attack, instead whip it in front of him, and players need to watch where the tongue is positioned to counterattack like in Phase 2.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Super Mario Altered was originally designed as a 2D game, though was transitioned to 3D during the reboot. This was done as Crakabo was inspired by A Hat in Time and wanted to create a 3D platformer.
    • The game also originally took place in the Mushroom Kingdom, but the change to taking place in the Darkened Kingdom was done so the creators could have more freedom to include more unique characters.
  • The name "Super Mario Altered" is both a reference to the difference in gameplay style compared to other 3D Mario games, and the idea of alternate dimensions being explored in this game.

Characters[]

  • The different partners were added as the creators wanted to incorporated more major characters into the game, and expand on the people living in the Darkened Kingdom. They were also partly inspired by the Hats in A Hat in Time and Banjo-Kazooie (which is why all but one of the partners ride on Mario's back).
  • Olim is inspired by, or is even the same person as, Milo from Kingdombound from Lazy Studios. Both are cats, both sell costumes, and both are shown to be scammers. Olim's name is also Milo backwards. The creators thought it would be funny to insert one of their characters into a Mario game, so they decided Olim since it was an obvious reference, but still able to fit Mario's world.
    • Olim's name is inspired by Olimar, who's name is derived by Mario.
  • Queen Anemone is the only member of the Elemental Warriors to return in the game's reboot. However, in the original, rather than being hypnotized, she was forced into being a villain by Minerva herself when her kingdom is taken over. Alongside that she had a different appearance mostly composed of faded whites.
