The rankings go from F- to Best Hero/Best Villain depending on the character. The first two rounds can be on any stage with hazards off but the Finals can only be played in the Mega Stadium. Story Mode[]

There are two separate sides to story mode; play as the heroes and protect the mushroom kingdom or play as the villains and try to take control of the mushroom kingdom. By completing one of the sides you will unlock the other and be able to use all characters in that sides story.

Hero Side[]

If you choose the hero side your goal will be to save the mushroom kingdom which is being attacked by Bowser. Throughout the adventure you play as Mario and unlock new heroes to help you along the way as well as fight many bosses throughout the adventure.

World One[]

World One takes place in Isle Delfino half in Delfino Plaza court and the other in Casino Delfino Court after completing the tutorial in Mega Stadium a cutscene will play showing Bowser raining enemies on the Mushroom Kingdom from his Airship. After that Mario notices a giant hand coming at them from the airship. Mario manages to dodge the hand but the hand grabs all the heroes. The airship then speeds off across the ocean, on the isle of Delfino and into Casino Delfino. After that a local Toad sums up what happens and explains that they must follow them, Mario nods in agreement. You will then have control over Mario in the same way as the world map in Mario Tennis Aces. Your choices are to return to Mega Stadium and redo the tutorial or head towards an airplane. The airplane will fly you to Delfino Island where you can advance to World 1-1 Proto Piranha's Revenge which is located on the runway.

World 1-1 Proto Piranha's Deal[]

By selecting World 1-1 a cutscene will play showing Mario walking across the Delfino Airstrip Toad admires the nice weather and is cut short when a yell is heard. Mario and Toad rush forwards to see F.L.U.D.D. being cornered by a Proto Piranha. The Proto Piranha turns around and notices Mario. The Proto Piranha then starts talking in a weird language Toad will then exclaim he speaks fluent in Plant. Toad will tell Mario the Proto Piranha challenged him to a game of tennis if Mario wins then the Proto Piranha will leave him and his friend alone if he wins however Mario must leave Isle Delfino forever. A box then comes up that allows you to pick to accept or decline. Accepting will start the match while declining will return you to the world map. The match plays like a normal tennis map played on the Delfino Plaza court. Once the match is completed one of two cutscenes will play; If won - the cutscene shows the Proto Piranha grunt in anger and leave. Mario will then help F.L.U.D.D up and put him on his back. F.L.U.D.D will then tell Mario he saw one of Bowser's Airships go inside Casino Delfino. A textbox then appears saying "F.L.U.D.D. has joined your team!!" This will end World 1-1 and return you to the world map which now shows F.L.U.D.D on your back. If lost - The cutscene will show Mario and Toad take back off towards the Mushroom Kingdom. A screen will then appear saying "you lost". You them must pick retry, return to world map, or return to main menu. After clearing World 1-1 you can choose to head back to the plane or head on to World 1-2 The Angry Wiggler which is located on Gelato Beach on the World Map.

World 1-2 The Angry Wiggler[]

By selecting World 1-2 a cutscene will play. The cutscene shows Mario (with F.L.U.D.D. still on his back) and Toad walking along the beach. They pass by a sleeping Wiggler  as Toad says "Wigglers look so harmless when they're sleeping." They continue to walk forwards when they suddenly hear a squish coming from their feet. They look down

to notice Mario stepped on a large pineapple. The sound managed to wake the wiggler from his nap. After yawning he noticed that Mario had stepped on his pineapple. He will then begin to turn red with anger and says "You destroyed my food now I destroy you in Tennis!" The match will then begin. The match plays like a normal tennis game on the Delfino Plaza court. After clearing the match you will either get the "You Lost" screen right after or a cutscene that shows Wiggler tipping over on his back due to him being launched by the great speed of the ball. After a few seconds of struggling he falls asleep. Toad will then say "Phew, that was a close one!" You will then return to the world map which opens the path to World 1-3. You can choose to head back to World 1-1 or continue to World 1-3 Monty Mole's Hideout which is located on Pinna Park on the world map.

World 1-3 Monty Mole's Hideout[]

amusement park that is Pinna Park. Suddenly the ground beneath them begins to shake. A hole suddenly appears beneath them and they fall through a long tunnel. They land safetly on the dirt of what appears to be an underground forrtress filled with Monty Moles. One Monty Mole appears from the ground right in front of Mario startling Toad. He then asks "Your the famous Mario i've been hearing about, Ready for a game of Tennis? By the way if you win I'll let you out." After that the match will begin. The match plays as a normal tennis match on the Monty Mole's Hideout court. If the match is lost the "You Lost" screen will appear. If the match is won a cutscene will play showing Monty Mole stomp on the ground in anger. He will then say "A deals a deal" as he rushes off screen. Mario turns around to see a staircase has been built. Toad will then say "That was fast!" as they climb it back up and return to Pinna Park returning you to the world map. This will open the path to World 1-4. You can either choose to head back to World 2-2 or continue on to World 1-4 Mecha Bowser Appears!.

World 1-4 Mecha Bowser Appears![]

By selecting World 1-4 a cutscene will play. The cutscene shows Mario, F.L.U.D.D., and Toad continuing on the path of Pinna Park. Suddnely the ground beneath them begins to shake and F.L.U.D.D. says "Not again!" Instead of a hole appearing beneath them a giant mechanized Bowser appears from the groud. F.L.U.D.D. will then say "Oh this thing

Mecha-bowser

Mecha-Bowser charging his next attack

again, you know what to do Mario!" Mario will then shake his head and hop on the nearby rollercoaster (Toad stays behind though). This will cause the match to begin. The match is a mid-boss match that takes place while riding the rollercoaster. Mecha-Bowser has fiveteen hearts and Mario has six. The rollercoater moves around Mecha-Bowser in a basic circle with some up and down hills. Mecha Bowser does two attacks; A Bullet Bill attack where he shoots a bullet bill at Mario who can either hit it back causing Mecha-Bowser to lose a heart, or get hit by it causing him to lose a heart. His other attack is a flame attack where he shoots a burst of flame that can be doged by Mario by using a trick shot in any direction which lets Mario hide in the cart, or Mario can be hit by it causing him to lose a life. If Mario loses all his lives a cutscene will play showing Mario and F.L.U.D.D. getting eaten by Mecha-Bowser and the "You Lost" screen will appear. Once Mecha-Bowser loses all of his lives a cutscene plays showing Mecha-Bowser explode into nothig but air. Mario will then hop off the rollercoaster and hifive F.L.U.D.D.. Toad then says "That was incredible, lets keep going!" and you are returned to the world map openeing a path to World 1-5. You can either choose to head back to World 1-3 or continue on to Wolrd 1-5 Pink Boo's Scare which is inside Hotel Delfino

[]

By selecting World 1-5 a cutscene will play. The cutscene shows Mario, F.L.U.D.D., and Toad walking into Hotel Delfino as a lightning crashes outside. When they enter the hotel it appears to be empty and Toad says "This place is scary" and begins to shake with fear. A Pink Boo suddenly appears in fron of Toad making him jump and scream. He takes a peek and notices he is. He sighs a relief and the group continues to walk along the path returning you to the world map opening a path to World 1-6. You can either choose to head back to World 1-4 or continue on to World 1-6 Slepping Boo Dodge

World 1-6 Sleeping Boo Dodge[]

By selecting World 1-6 a cutscene will play. The cutscene shows Mario, F.L.U.D.D, and Toad walking down a long narrow hallway in Hotel Delfino as tons of Sleping Boos are seen down the hallway either on the floor or floating in the air. Toad then explains that contact with a Sleeping Boo wil cause you to have to restart the level, so the only way to get past them is to trick shot over them. He then explains that trick shotting down will make you duck and trick shotting up will make you jump. This match works as an auto-scroller with Mario running himself and the player only having to trickshot over or under them. You must jup or duck over fifty hurdles of Sleeping Boos but going to one hundred will unlock the secret Pink Boo racket for tricky characters. After the mission is complete a cutscene will play showing Mario runing further down the hall as a cry of help from what sound like Luigi is heard. This will cause you to return to the world map opening a path to World 1-7. You must then choose to head back to World 1-5 or continue on to World 1-7 Shadow Mario's Capture.

World 1-7 Shadow Mario's Capture[]

'By' selelecting World 1-7 a cutscene will play. The cutsecene shows Mario (with F.L.U.D.D. on his back) and Toad rushing into a large open lobby in Hotel Delfino. In front of them is Luigi hanging from a cage in the sky. Mario rushes towards him but is stopped when Shadow Mario  jumps out from above in front of him. He begins to speak sounding

Shadow Mario Artwork - Super Mario Sunshine

Shadow Mario after jumping down from above

almost exactly like Mario saying "If you want your brother you'll have to go through me first!" Mario gets his racket ready and F.L.U.D.D. says "It's on!" starting the match. The match works as a normal tennis match in the Casino Delfino court but with Luigi seen hanging from a cage in the background. If the match is lost the "You Lost" screen will appear. If the match is won a cutscene will play showing Shadow Mario grunt in anger. Shadow Mario then says "Fine you can take your brother, but I'm having this!" he then proceeds to take F.L.U.D.D. and carry him into the next room while F.L.U.D.D. is screaming "Help!" Mario and Toad hel Luigi out of his cage and then Mario collapses on the ground tired. Toad then says "Luigi you think you can handle this without Mario for now!" Luigi then shakes his head worringly. Toad then says "I knew i could count on you!" and pats him on the back. Luigi then stands up straight and rushes into the other room. A screen will then appear saying "Luigi has joined the team!" before returning you to the world map which now shows Luigi instead of Mario opening a path to World 1-8. You must then choose to go back to world 1-6 or continue on to World 1-8 Saving F.L.U.D.D.

World 1-8 Saving F.L.U.D.D.[]

By selecting World 1-8 a cutscene will play. The cutscene shows Luigi running into the main room for Casino Delfino. He looks around and notices Shadow Mario standing in the middle with F.L.U.D.D. still on his back. He holds his racket and then grabs the tennis ball starting the first match. The match works the same as in World 1-7 however if the match is won a different cutscene will play. The cutscene shows Shadow Mario being launched back but managing to stay on his feet. He then jumps up and prepares to attack Luigi with his paint brush but just before he does F.L.U.D.D. propells him in the air getting him stuck in he ceiling. F.L.U.D.D. falls off his back and lands in Luigi's arm.

F.L.U.D.D. then says "So your Mario's brother, thanks for the help." They look up at the ceiling and notice Shadow Mario has dissapeared. F.L.U.D.D. then says "I guess we should head back to Mario and Toad." Suddenly the doors back close making Luigi jump. KIng Boo then appears in front of him making him jump again. King Boo laughs and says "Why if it isn't Luigi it's been a while since we've battled how about a game of tennis unless you want to be here forever." Luigi shakes his head yes and the second match starts. The match works as a normal match but teaches you the new Rival Shot mechanic. If the match is lost the "You Lost" screen apears but if the match is won a cutscene will play.  The cutscene shows Luigi hi-fiving F.L.U.D.D.'s head as King Boo laughs saying "You really think i would let you go!" he then rushes towards the camer and appears to eat it. Suddenly the camera appears on the roof of Luigi's Mansion with Luigi and F.L.U.D.D. there too. Suddenly a giant robot Bowser comes from the sky and King Boo is seen entering it. The robot roars starting the final match. The match works as a boss fight with Luigi having three rackets. Normally the Bowser bot will shoot out fireballs that must be hit back otherwise a racket will be lost. After a couple of fireballs though the Bowser Bot will throw a spikeball. The spikeball must be countered with a zoneshot that will cause King Boo to fall out of the bot and lets you use your Rival Shot destroying one of King Boo's rackets. This process must be repeated four more times. If the match is lost it shows Luigi stuck in a painting as a "You Lost" screen is showed. If the match is won a cutscene will play showing the Bowser Bot explode and King Boo laucnhing into the stars. This will then return you to the world map starting a character dialog scene.

Leaving Delfino[]

Before leaving delfino a character dialog scene begins. The scene has Mario and Toad on one side and Luigi and F.L.U.D.D. on the other. Toad then says "You did it you saved F.L.U.D.D.!" Luigi then says "Oh yeh!" Toad will then ask "Where did everyone else go?" and Luigi will begin explaining in his gibberish language. Toad will then say "They're in that airship over there, let's go get them" You then are returned to the world map and now have the option to switch characters between Mario, Luigi, and now Toad. You must then choose to head back to World 1-7 or continue to World 2 Airship.

Wario’s Factory[]

Wario's factory is inside a giant factory with Bob-ombs on conveyor belts scattered everywhere. Some fans are on the conveyor belts watching as well. Two conveyor belts are touching the court one on the server's side and one on the receiver's side. Every fifteen seconds a Bob-omb will come from each side and begin to chase the player, when they get close they will begin the countdown to explode. The explosion can cause players to be launched, to avoid this you can hit the bob-omb with the racket while hitting the ball to launch it to the other side (to turn this off turn off hazards).

Star Hill[]

Star Hill court is on top of Star Hill from its appearance in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Fans are found sitting on some of the stars. Every little while Commander Shroob can be seen on the sidelines blowing a whistle, then three support shroobs will run up next to him with a massive Shroob-omb they will then throw it at the server who must try to hit it to the other player it then continues as a normal tennis game but with a heavier ball being the massive Shroob-omb (This can be turned off by turning off hazards).

Kamek's Revenge[]

Kamek's Revenge is on top of giant wood logs strapped together in the sky. Fans are watching from different floating logs. Sometimes Kamek will fly by and attempt to knock down the player and then fly away (This can be turned off by turning off hazards).

Monty Mole's Hideout[]

Monty Mole's Hideout is inside a giant underground tunnel filled with Monty Moles. In the background monty moles will stick their heads out and watch the game for a bit before leaving. Fans are sitting on bleachers placed on the side and this stage features no hazards.

Comet Observatory[]

The Comet Observatory court is located in the front main part of the Comet Observatory. Fans are watching from he stairs to the upper part and the center ring. Sometimes a small blackhole will come racing through the middle of the court, if the ball gets sucked in it, it will spit it back out to the person who hit it in the black hole (this can be turned off by turning off hazards).

Baby Park[]

The Baby Park course is on top of a gigantic Ferris wheel with one cart big enough to fit the entire court. Fans are watching from other carts in the Ferris Wheel. Sometimes the ball will manage to tilt the cart in one direction causing the characters to be pulled that way it will then rebalance after awhile.

DK Jungle[]

The DK Jungle court is in a very dense jungle with a clear spot for the court and some log benches for the fans to sit on. Sometimes a herd of rhinos will charge in on both sides that can hit balls back to players (this can be turned off by turning off hazards).

Dry Bowser's Castle[]

The Dry Bowser's Castle court looks exactly like the area where the Dry Bones boss fight was in New Super Mario Bros. Fans are watching from the floating moving platform in the sky. On both sides of the court towards the back are axes, if these axes are hit it will cause a giant lava bubble to rain down one on each side (can be turned off by turning off hazards).

Baby Bowser's Castle[]

The Baby Bowser's Castle court takes place on top of Baby Bowser's Castle from its appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Fans will be watching from the walls and this stage features no stage hazards.

K. Rool's Blast-o-Matic.[]

The K. Rool's Blast-O-Matic court is inside K. Rool's giant laser base. Bleachers are set up on the sides so fans may watch. On both sides of the court towards the back are levers, if they are hit with a ball it will cause a laser to be shot from the machine causing the court to shake and three rocks to fall on each side of the court which can knock out a character (can be turned off by turning off hazards).
