Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival 2 is the sequel to the 2015 party game Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival and a spin-off of the Animal Crossing series. As with the game's prequel, the game is based entirely around the amiibo figures and cards.

Unlike its predecessor, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival 2 features development cooperation between four different companies. While Nintendo EPD and Existence Software provide most of the work on the title, Nd Cube and 1-UP Studio (the former of which also co-developed the predecessor) provide additional support in development.

Gameplay[]

Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival 2 is, much like its prequel, a board game-esque party game. Using amiibo figures, players roll dice and move their way around the board. The objective of the main 'amiibo Festival' mode is to gain the most Happy Points, which is primarily done by traversing to various Positivity Spaces; though can also be obtained through other means, such as by trading for Bells or reaching the four Gyroids positioned around the town.

The amiibo Festival mode is deeply expanded upon in amiibo Festival 2, with several new challenges added. The main of which is the Mortgage system. Mortgages have appeared in every Animal Crossing title, and, once paid off, allow the players to expand their house. Similarly, in amiibo Festival 2, players must pay off their debts in order to expand their homes, thus increasing the amount of Happy Points and Bells earned over the course of the game.

Another new system is the Shop function. While players could purchase playing cards from Redd when he is in town, all towns will have a permanent shop run by Leila and Grams. Grams sells various playing cards at a fair price, while Leila will buy them from the player. Redd, while he returns from amiibo Festival, now carries various cards exclusive to his shop; and will sell three of those (and one overpriced Grams-sold card) when he appears in town.

Characters[]

Playable Characters[]

The playable characters of amiibo Festival 2 are, like its predecessor, chosen through the use of amiibo figurines. As such, all Animal Crossing characters that are the subjects of amiibo figurines are playable in the game. All characters act identically: they are purely cosmetic and are used to distinguish between players.

While there are no "default" playable characters, most versions of the game come with Isabelle and Digby amiibo figurines. However, a second edition exists without these amiibo, for those that already own them.

Tortimer, Sable, Leif, Pelly, and Phyllis can all be played as by scanning their amiibo cards. As amiibo cards do not save data, their cards must only be scanned on first use. Medli, W. Link, Epona, Ganon, Inkwell, Cece, Viché, and the Villager are the only characters that need amiibo figures from series other than the Animal Crossing amiibo series to be played as.

Basic Villagers[]

Should one choose to (or not have enough amiibo figures), one can choose to play as one of six default human villagers. The basic villagers have generic names that can be changed in the options menu. In addition, they may also transfer over their character from both Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. Up to four characters can be transferred from Happy Home Designer and New Leaf.

Event Characters[]

Event characters make consistent appearances that are marked on the calendar.

Random Event Characters[]

Random event characters randomly make appearances on the board, and their spaces will remain on it for a single week.

Katie NL
Katie
When Katie comes to town, she will challenge the players to various minigames that are somewhat similar to those given to the player by campers in the main Animal Crossing characters. Winning the game will grant players with an uncommon/rare card, but losing will have her take a card should the player have one.

The minigames that Katie plays are as follows:

  • Guessing if the number on a card is higher or lower; with the player obtaining a card should they guess correctly.
  • Guessing which of the three cards Katie holds is either a Queen or an Ace - the left, right, or middle. Katie will do this thrice, and give rarer cards should the player guess correctly all three times.
  • Guessing which of three random fruits Katie last ate.
Katrina
Katrina
When Katrina comes to town, a variety of Fortune Telling spaces will appear on the board. Should the player land on a space, they will be taken to Katrina's tent and have their fortune told. Fortunes have a variety of different uses that differ depending on the card and the position it is flipped in. Certain cards may increase the player's Bells or Happy Points for a temporary time; and if Katrina flips the card so that the top faces the player, these effects will last for the rest of the game as long as another player rolls the number on the card (otherwise it lasts a week).
Redd - New Leaf
Redd
As previously mentioned above, when Redd comes to town, he will open up a card shop. There are four cards that he will sell at a time: three being cards that players can only obtain in this store, and one being an over-priced card that can normally be obtained from Grams' shop. A player can only purchase one card from Redd in the week that he is in town, though they only pay for the card at the end of the week. Depending on how many times the player enters Redd's store, Redd may be willing to lower the price of the card purchased.
Shrunk NL
Dr. Shrunk
PeteNL
Pete
Occasionally, a thunderstorm (or snowstorm, depending on the season) will occur during a game. Afterwards, Pete will appear, and tell the players that he has lost his various letters. Instead of earning Happy Points or Bells, for the next week players will instead look for Pete's letters. The players will get various bonuses for the amount of letters they collect in the week. These bonuses include rare cards and Happy Point multipliers.

Other Characters[]

Lloid - New Leaf
Gyroids
Four Gyroids are positioned around the towns that serve as the "boards" in the amiibo Festival mode. These Gyroids award Happy Points to those that reach them, with the amount of Happy Points accumulating with every Gyroid reached; with the first Gyroid giving 5, the next 10, and so on.
Leila NL
Leila
Leila and Grams are two turtles that live on a faraway island known as Tortimer Island. Together, they run a shop in the various towns that the "boards" are based in, and will buy and sell various cards to those that travel to them.
Grams NL

Hosts[]

The host of the amiibo Festival mode changes depending on the season in which the game is held, and the board selected. While the hosts all have unique dialogue, they all serve the same purpose: hosting the festival and describing various events as they occur. While playing on the default Town board, the player can scan amiibo cards of villagers to have them replace the host that would normally appear; though these hosts have generic dialogue based on whatever their personality type is. The City board is the only board where there are two hosts that appear simultaneously.

Boards[]

The original Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival included only a simple board that was changed depending on the month chosen.

Town The default board. The Town board is set within a large town, based off its appearance in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. There are three different areas of the town: the beach area, the main village area, and the campsite. Players can choose to play the map in any of the twelve months; while this is mainly an aesthetic choice, some of the houses are moved around.
City A board set within the City of Animal Crossing: City Folk (albeit made much larger for the sake of being the setting of a board). The smallest of the stages, it is essentially just a large circle centred around a fountain. The board is always set during the summer, though whether it is night or day is randomly decided upon start-up. Players can enter certain stores (the Marquee, Happy Room Academy, GracieGrace, and Resetti Surveillance Center), where the Gyroids are located.
Classic Town A generic town based off the towns from the original Animal Crossing title. A large train station is located in the north of the board, with a large lake in the centre. Because it is based on the original Animal Crossing, the stage has two layers, with two Gyroids on each layer. Like the normal Town, players can choose to play it in any month.
Cherry Blossom Festival
Acorn Festival
The Acorn Festival board is unlocked by scanning any Super Mario series amiibo figure.
Renaissance Festival
The Renaissance Festival board is unlocked by scanning any The Legend of Zelda series amiibo figure.

Minigames[]

Unlike Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, which saw minigames in the form of separate game modes, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival 2 sees the addition of new Minigame Spaces. Landing on a Minigame Space on the board allows for all players to partake in a random minigame, competing for Happy Points and Bells. Several of the minigames featured in the game's predecessor return, though have all seen many changes.

Balloon Hunt
Fruit Path
Quiz Show
Mystery Campers
Resetti Bop
Bug Catching
Diving Tour
Fishing Tourney
Tortimer's Labyrinth
Cornimer Beat
Item Matching
Scavenger Hunt
Hide-and-Seek

Desert Island Escape[]

Desert Island Escape returns from Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival as its own separate game mode. While nearly identical to its original counterpart, the minigame has been changed somewhat.

The goal of Desert Island Escape is to, as its name implies, escape a desert island. To do this, three characters must work together to collect a sail and three logs in order to create a raft. To do this, they need to find supplies by exploring the island, though they can only perform a select number of actions per each day of the minigame. There are also a variety of enemies that inhabit the island, stunning the character and disabling their ability to continue work for an entire day. Players must also balance the characters' hunger and a limit on the number of days in the game; running out of either results in a Game Over.

All villagers have unique stats that are split into four categories: Movement indicates the amount of steps a villager can take per each turn; Vision indicates the distance that a villager can see per each movement; Hunger indicates the amount of food needed to fully restore a villager's hunger; and Fav. Fruit indicates which fruit is a villager's favourite, which heals them more when they eat it, and they can obtain more of it from trees than other fruits.

Additional amiibo Compatibility[]

link
Any
(Animal Crossing series)
Using any Animal Crossing amiibo card allows the player to choose the host of the game should they play on the Town board. Most special characters have unique dialogue, but most normal villagers reuse dialogue based upon the character's personality. The amiibo card of a character that will be participating in the game can not be scanned.
Amiibo Villager
Villager
(Super Smash Bros. series)
Using the Villager (Super Smash Bros. series) amiibo, players unlock the ability to play as the male Villager that acts as the basis of the amiibo figurine. He takes the name of "Villager" in-game by default. Should the player also have saved data from Super Smash Bros. on the amiibo figure, they may also import the appearance and name of their amiibo fighter.
As of version 2.0.3, the game is compatible with additional amiibo. Certain amiibo unlock various things that could otherwise be purchased through DLC.
MarAmiibo Mario
Any
(Super Mario series)
Using any amiibo based on a character from the Super Mario series (specifically any amiibo of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Toad, Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Wario, and/or Dr. Mario; not including the 30th Anniversary Mario amiibo, however) unlocks a special Acorn Festival board that would otherwise be available through paid DLC. The Acorn Festival board has Cornimer as the host, and players collect Acorns as opposed to Happy Points.
Amiibo WolfLink
Any
(The Legend of Zelda series)
Using any amiibo based on a character from the The Legend of Zelda series (specifically any amiibo of Link/Toon Link/Wolf Link, Zelda, Sheik, and/or Ganondorf) unlocks a special Medieval-inspired board that would otherwise be available through paid DLC. The "Renaissance Festival" map has Knox as the host, and players collect various fruits as opposed to Happy Points and Bells.
