Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit (Japanese: マリオカートスイッチ回路 Mario Kāto Suitchi Kairo) is a racing game developed by Crash Co. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It serves as the ninth entry in the mainstream Mario Kart series, and the thirteenth overall should the arcade games and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe be included. It also serves as the second Mario Kart title for the Nintendo Switch, and the first title in the series to be on a console with another game in the series made for it.

Unlike recent titles in the series, particularly Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit does not introduce any new prominent features or mechanics. Instead, the game takes the best elements from each game in the series and perfects them. As such several features return from previous games. Gliding, underwater, and anti-gravity segments return, as does kart customization, Coins, and the use of Double Item Boxes. Halfpipe tricks from Mario Kart Wii return, and there exists an option to race with two characters, bearing similar gameplay to Mario Kart: Double Dash. Special items, character-specific items, also return from said game. Modes from previous games also make a return, including Battle Mode from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS. The game also introduces an in-game shop where the player can purchase kart parts, among others.

Gameplay[]

Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit maintains the traditional gameplay elements from previous Mario Kart titles, specifically Mario Kart 8 and its remake Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Players pick a character of six weight classes and drive vehicles of varying stats, strengths, and weaknesses around an obstacle course-like racetrack in an attempt to finish first place. During the race, racers can pick up items from Item Boxes, where the probability of receiving items is dependent on the racers' distance from the frontrunner; for example, first place typically receives defense items such as Bananas, Green Shells, and Fake Item Boxes, while racers at intermediate distance from the lead receive more powerful offense items such as Triple Red Shells, Fire Flowers, and Boos, and racers far from the lead receive items that lead to an increase in speed or the possibility of going off-road without losing speed, such as the Spiny Shell, Super Star, and Bullet Bill, to help compensate their distance. Players receive an amount of points depending on the position they end up with. Whichever player has the most amount of points wins the entire race.

Notably the game adds an option between "Singles" and "Doubles". In Singles, the race plays similarly to most Mario Kart titles. Meanwhile, Doubles mode offers similar gameplay to Mario Kart: Double Dash!!; two drivers pair up in a single kart, and their combined stats are equally balanced. During the race, they are able to switch places on the kart, with one driving and the other throwing items. Another feature introduced is an in-game shop run by Toadsworth. Throughout the game, players earn Mario Coins from winning Grand Prix, winning Battle Mode, gambling on online matches, and the like, and these Mario Coins can be used to purchase items from Toadsworth's shop. This provides a significant difference to randomly unlocking kart parts by collecting Coins during races. In addition to Kart Parts, players are able to purchase customized colorations to use for kart bodies, as well as stickers that can be placed on the kart. It should be noted these are purely aesthetic and provide no changes to stats.

Like Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, karts can be customized once again with wheels and gliders, as well as being able to add stickers purchasable from Toadsworth's shop. Karts, Bikes, and ATVs all return, and special karts exclusive to Doubles mode are available as well. Notably, some karts are exclusive to specific characters, like in Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii. Gliding, underwater, and anti-gravity sections on tracks also make a return, as do Coins, character-specific special items, tricks, halfpipe tricks, and the ability to look backwards.

Game Modes[]

Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit features several modes of play, both single-player and multiplayer.

Grand Prix[]

Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit's Grand Prix mode works similar to past installments. Like past games the 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc engine classes are available by default, with Mirror Mode being unlocked after getting a gold trophy on all 150cc cups, and 200cc being unlocked after getting gold trophies on all Mirror Mode cups. Players choose a cup which takes them through four (or eight in the case of World Cups) of races in a set order. Like Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, players have the option of playing Grand Prix with multiple players.

After completing a cup, the pkayer's rank in said cup is determined by their placements in all the races of the cup. Placing 1st in all courses will earn a three-star ranking, while placing 2nd in one race will earn a two-star ranking, and placing 2nd in two races or 3rd in one race grants a one-star ranking. Other ranks are ranged from A to E.

Time Trials[]

Time Trials lets players complete a selected course in the fastest time possible. At the beginning of each race players are given Triple Mushrooms to help them use shortcuts to earn faster times. In addition to racing to get the fastest times, players can view and race against ghost data, either from themselves, staff members, or players across the world. A new feature allows players to race against up to five ghosts at once. Leaderboards also return.

VS[]

VS mode can be played locally with up to four players. Players can set rules like which items appear, the difficulty level of the CPUs, how many races, and Team or Solo racing. Players can also set how the courses appear, choose a course after one is finished, or play all tracks randomly or in order.

Battle[]

Battle returns from previous Mario Kart titles, and is most similar to is Mario kart 8 Deluxe incarnation. Battle Mode has its own special courses, called Battle Courses, which resemble arenas more than they do racetracks. In most modes, the players can either play the mode individually or divided into two teams. The possible modes available are as follows:

Balloon Battle
In Balloon Battle, all of the players have three balloons that they must keep throughout the battle. If a driver is hit by an item, they will lose their balloon. Losing all of their balloons will result in an elimination. This is the only mode with two options; there is an endurance mode where the last player standing wins, and a points mode where hitting opponents with items gains a point, whereas losing all the balloons will deduct a point, and Lakitu will bring the player back to the course. In the latter case, there is a timer, and whoever has the most points at the end of the time wins. In Online, only the points mode can be played.

Coin Runners
In Coin Runners, the goal is to collect as many Coins as possible. There is a timer, and whoever has the most Coins by the end of the time wins. Similar to most other titles, there is no limit to how many Coins one can collect. If a driver is hit however, they will lose half of their Coins, which can then be collected by other drivers.

Shine Thief
In Shine Thief, there is a single Shine Sprite on the course, and one player must hold it for at least 20 seconds to win. If they are hit by an item, they will lose the Shine Sprite, allowing others to grab it and making the timer start over.

Bob-omb Blast
In Bob-omb Blast, the only items that drivers can collect are Bob-ombs, which must be used to blow other drivers up. If one manages to hit another driver, they will receive a point and, should they have a point, it will be stolen as well, most similar to its appearance in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Whoever manages to obtain five points wins.

Moon Madness
In Moon Madness, 10 Power Moons are scattered across the arena, and the players must battle each other to obtain them, similar to Shine Runners in Mario Kart DS. Like Coin Runners, there is a time limit, and whoever has the most Power Moons by the end of the mode wins.

Renegade Roundup
In Renegade Roundup, the players are split into two teams, with one having Potted Piranha Plants that are permanently attached to their karts. The mode is in a vein of cops and robbers, where the team with the Piranha Plants must chase those without. If the other team is hit with a Potted Piranha Plant, they will be locked in a cell, in which one from said team would need to drive over a switch to free them. If all of the opponents are caught, the Piranha Plant team wins, though they will lose if time runs out and at least one opponent is remaining.

Mission Mode[]

Mission Mode returns from Mario Kart DS. As in said game, throughout the mode the player is given a variety of missions that put their skills to the test. However, whereas the missions in Mario Kart DS were simple ones like collecting a number of Coins or breaking a number of Item Boxes, the missions in Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit are more similar to the Tournaments in Mario Kart Wii, and are described to be more in-depth.

As in Mario Kart DS, the missions are divided into several levels, with eight missions each. Once all eight missions in a level are completed, the boss level opens, where the player must defeat a boss to advance to the next level.

Crash Co. has stated that Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit will attempt to remedy common criticisms with the character roster in Mario Kart 8, including the roster being composed of filler characters such as Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach and that the characters have no differences aside from minute stat changes.

The roster contains a total of 104 playable characters, consisting of 24 starter characters, 38 unlockable, and 33 downloadable. The roster is divided into six weight classes of varying stats, with these classes being Feather, Super Light, Light, Medium, Cruiser, and Heavy. Non-Mario characters also make an appearance in downloadable content, such as Kirby from the Kirby or Pokémon series. R.O.B. also appears as a pre-order bonus, and was later available for download as a stanadalone character.

Driver Statistics[]

Like in Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, drivers in a specific group have their own stats. Below are the stats characters can be gauged by:

  • Speed: The top speed of the character.
  • Acceleration: The rate of the character they take to reach their top speed from an idle position.
  • Weight: The weight of the character. Characters with higher weight can knock away characters with lower weight.
  • Handling: The character's turning ability. A higher handling stat means a sharper turn.
  • Traction: The grasp of the character. Characters with higher traction slip less on certain terrain and can stay stable on the road better. Not to be confused with handling.

The values obtainable with the various combinations range from 1 to 12. Just like in Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Miis can be Feather, Medium, or Heavy, depending on their height and weight.

Courses[]

The game has a total of 82 tracks, consisting of 36 new tracks and 44 retro tracks, featuring four tracks from Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit. Mario Kart DS, and Mario Kart Wii, three from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart 7, and six from Mario Kart 8. As with the retro tracks in the 3DS and Wii U installments, several of them have been altered to accommodate the gliding, underwater, and anti-gravity features. New to the series are special "World Cups", which are significantly longer in that they have eight race tracks rather than the traditional four. There are four World Cups, with one being for new tracks and one being for retro tracks. One of these World Cups is directly based off of Mario Kart 8, taking tracks specifically from that game. The game's downloadable content thus far features two more cups with four tracks each.

Some of the downloadable courses are directly inspired from those of the Mario Kart Arcade GP games. However, they are not considered retro tracks as they are not featured in any console titles.

Unlocking cups is done in a similar manner to Mario Kart Wii. Only the Mushroom, Flower, Shell, and Banana Cups are available from the start. By earning trophies of bronze, silver, or gold in the Mushroom and Flower Cups, the Star Cup is unlocked, in which getting a trophy unlocks the Special Cup. Likewise, getting trophies on the Shell and Banana Cups will unlock the Leaf Cup which unlocks the Lightning Cup. The 1-Up Mushroom Cup and Red Shell Cups must be unlocked by earning at least a star rank on all new and retro cups respectively. Finally, the 8 Cup is a special cup that is unlocked after earning at least a star rank on every cup in 50cc and 100cc. Once a cup is unlocked, they will become available in all engine classes.

Mario Circuit is the first course in the Mushroom Cup, and the first course overall. The course's layout is somewhat similar to GCN Luigi Circuit, albeit with obvious differences. Players start off the track on a straightaway before jumping off a ramp, where they can choose to either traverse on ground or go through a gliding section. Both paths lead to a large turn, which takes the drivers to another straightaway with several ramps to trick off of. The track then has a second turn which leads to an anti-gravity section, where the track loops around Peach's Castle. One last turn leads to the finish line, which is aligned with boost panels on the outer turn similar to GCN Luigi Circuit and Wii Luigi Circuit. Toads, Yoshis, Koopa Troopas, Shy Guys, and Hammer Bros. make up the audience, as well as Toad repairmen standing by the sidelines.

The second course in the Mushroom Cup is Toad Valley. Throughout the course, players will drive through a village made of Toad Houses, with several Toads cheering the players on. In a similar way to GCN Yoshi Circuit, the track is shaped somewhat like a Super Mushroom; drivers start on a wide curve and will follow it, leading them to a sharp turn right which leads to a left turn. This makes a straightaway, which leads to another left turn and a sharp right turn, leading to the finish lime. At both of the sharp turns, there is a shortcut that can be taken which leads to a ramp, allowing drivers to skip part of the track and jump over a Toad House.

The fourth and final course in the Mushroom Cup is Toadette Resort. Taking place on a beach at sunset, players start in the parking lot of a Toadette-themed hotel. Drivers ride through the parking lot, occasionally being able to perform tricks off of the parked cars. Players then enter the hotel and drive through the lobby, making a turn left or right to drive up a large spiral staircase. Both paths lead to the resort's roof, having a pool with a large float in it. Players can either drive around the pool, drive through the pool, or drive off a ramp to drive on the float in the pool. All paths lead to a glider ramp that takes drivers off of the resort's roof and onto a busy street with cars, which can knock players over or flatten them. After a few more turns, players are taken back to the parking lot and the starting line.

Subcon Skies, as its name suggests, is based off of Subcon, the main area in Super Mario Bros. 2. The second course in the 1-Up Mushroom Cup, the track mainly takes place in the sky, with various structures and temples themed after Phantos, Shy Guys, Ninjis, and other creatures from the game. The first part of the course is set on clouds, which the player will drive through. Vases are also found across the course, some of which have fallen and can be tricked off of. Cobrats are found in some of the upright Vases however, and will spit metal balls at the drivers to spin them out. A ramp with a gliding section leads players into a Hawkmouth, taking them to Wart's castle. The ground is mainly composed of conveyor belts, which will drag drivers backward or give them a boost forward depending on their direction. Bob-ombs will also walk out of Bob-omb-like structures found on the sides of the track, which act like Bob-omb items. An anti-gravity section leads players through Wart's throne room and the Dream Machine and into another Hawkmouth, taking them back to the clouds and to the finish line.

DS Figure-8 Circuit appears as the first track in the Shell Cup, as well as the first retro track in the game. Previously appearing in Mario Kart DS, the track has received a huge visual overhual. The track now resembles Wii U Mario Kart Stadium, being set in a stadium and being night. The entire track is also blue, and looks like the "8" in Mario Kart 8's logo. The track's layout is mostly unchanged, though the first turn leads into an anti-gravity section, which ends at the second turn and leads to the finish line. Toads, Shy Guys, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Bros., Goombas, and more cheer from the bleachers, while Toad repairmen stay on the sidelines like in Mario Circuit.

SNES Vanilla Lake 1 is the first track of the Banana Cup, previously appearing in Super Mario Kart. Like many of the tracks from Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart: Super Circuit, the course has received a massive visual overhaul. Similar to how GCN Sherbet Land was remodeled for Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the track now takes place at night, with the northern lights appearing in the sky. Several Toads and Yoshis are also found cheering in the background. The layout remains largely unchanged, as drivers go in a loop with light turns. The ground is covered in ice, which can cause the drivers to slip around. Ice Blocks are also covering the track, which will break if a driver hits them, slowing them down. A notable change is the added underwater section; in the second half of the track, drivers can go underwater to drive there. Clampies are also found here; these will open up sometimes to reveal Coins or Item Boxes, though will close soon after, hitting any drivers nearby.

RedShellMK8Red Shell Cup
SNES Bowser Castle 3 first appeared in Super Mario Kart, and is the first track in the Red Shell Cup. Like most of the tracks originating from the SNES and GBA installments, the track has received a visual overhaul to make the track less flat; Bowser Statues are found everywhere and Dry Bones are on blocks and Pipes sinking into the lava, cheering. The part of the course with the multiple jumps also takes place outside of Bowser's castle, being placed in a dead forest similar to the one found in GCN Bowser's Castle and Wii Bowser's Castle. The track has also received some slight alterations; the aforementioned section with multiple jumps now has an alternative glider ramp. Lava Bubbles have also been added, which jump around in the lava as the drivers jump through, and will spin them out when hit, potentially knocking them into the lava below. Thwomps are also found in the later parts of the track, which will attempt to fall on drivers and flatten them. When on the ground, they also serve as a roadblock.

GCN Wario Colosseum is the fourth track in the Red Shell Cup. The track originates from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and has gone through some major renovations. The course has been aesthetically upgraded, featuring an audience and Lakitu cameramen beside the track. The track has also been upgraded immensely. A lot of the turns now accommodate for anti-gravity, and almost 80% of the track is anti-gravity. The huge jump near the beginning of the track is now a gliding ramp, as is the optional jump near the end at the fork in the road. Like the original, the course is two laps long.

GBA Mario Circuit returns from Mario Kart: Super Circuit, after previously being the second course of the Shell Cup in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The course remains unchanged in both aesthetics and gameplay, with players taking two turns to reach a ramp, taking them to an anti-gravity section with a 180-degree turn. Another ramp will take drivers out of the anti-gravity section, and more turns must be made while avoiding oil slicks that spin drivers out. Near the end of the course is a split path, where players can sacrifice some time to get an item and a boost pad. A gliding ramp is also found in the outfield near the end of the race, which can be used as a shortcut.

Returning from Super Mario Kart is SNES Donut Plains 3, being the fifth course in the 8 Cup after previously being the second course of the Banana Cup in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Overall the course remains unchanged in aesthetics, though there are some minor differences in gameplay; drivers will make a quick turn right before going on a wooden bridge over a lake. Players can either ride on the bridge to move faster or drive underwater to get an item. A large right turn takes players to another bridge, which is broken and underwater driving is required. Two more turns will lead players to where two Monty Moles are. As they dig through the ground they will create trails, which can be tricked off of. However, the Monty Moles can pop out of the ground, knocking over drivers. The player then take two more sharp turns to reach the finish line.
KRTDL Warp StarWarp Star Cup
Bowser Coaster is the first track in the Warp Star Cup, and as such is the first downloadable course in the game. As the name suggests, the course takes place in an abandoned theme park with lava, smoke, and destroyed structures everywhere, and the track is a rickety roller coaster-like structure themed after Bowser. A three-sectioned track, the player starts at the bottom of a large hill. As the drivers move upward, they gain speed from boost panels as they ride down the slope. Throughout the entire course, there are broken sections where the player can fall, and there are also large flames that will spin drivers out. Some of the track also features anti-gravity sections, allowing for loop-de-loops and upside-down driving. The third section of the track ends with a large ramp, with some of the track broken off. The player must either jump off the regular ramps to drive on Airships that lead to the final part of the track or jump off a glider ramp to glide to the finish line.

Yoshi Park is the third course of the Warp Star Cup. As its name suggests, it is based off of both Yoshi Park 1 and Yoshi Park 2 from Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, with the track combining the two courses. The first half of the track is based off of Yoshi Park 1, with candy and sweets everywhere. There is also a small fortress where cardboard cutouts of Toad, Toadette, Toadsworth, Baby Mario, and other characters are found. This will take players to the second part of the track, based off of Yoshi Park 2. In contrast to the sweets from the first part, the second part has a spooky theme, with cardboard cutouts of ghosts from Luigi's Mansion and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. The drivers are lead back into the castle, which now also has a spooky theme. At the end, a large cardboard cutout of King Boo is found at the end of the track, which players drive through to reach the finish line.

SNES Rainbow Road first appeared as the final track in the Special Cup, and the final track overall in Super Mario Kart. It later returned in Mario Kart: Super Circuit as the last track in the Extra Special Cup, in Mario Kart 7 as the last track in the Lightning Cup, and in Mario Kart 8 as the second track in the Triforce Cup. It returns for the fourth time in the series as the final track in the Egg Cup. It remains largely unchanged from its appearance in Mario Kart 8 and Mario kart 8 Deluxe; it is relatively flat compared with most Rainbow Road-like tracks, though turns are really sharp. In addition, Star Thwomps appear throughout the track, which not only can flatten drivers, but will make them spin out just by touching them. They do, however, create shockwaves on the ground drivers can use to trick off of.

As in all Mario Kart games, Super Mario Kart: Switch Circuit allows the usage of items during races, collected from driving through Item Boxes. Several items, including the Thunder Cloud, Fake Item Box, Super Leaf, Mega Mushroom, and POW Block, return after being removed in previous games. Meanwhile, several new items are introduced.

A notable feature is that, unlike Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe where the items drivers get are dictated by their distance from first place, the items collected are dictated by their placement in the race like in earlier games.

Upon using a Super Leaf, a raccoon tail similar to that of Raccoon Mario will appear on the kart. Players are able to perform a trick as if they were jumping off a ramp to suffer a tamer version of the attack, but they will still lose items. When a Bob-omb is thrown, it will stay in place or begin walking across the ground. It will flash red, and cause an explosion that knocks over all drivers in the blast radius. It will explode automatically if a driver or item hits it.

Once used, a Potted Piranha Plant with wheels will be placed in front of the kart. It will automatically chomp at nearby drivers to knock them over, as well as Coins and items. Once collected, the player will be given a blue boomerang to throw forwards or backwards. Once thrown, the boomerang will slide across the course and return to the user, spinning out any opponents and destroying items like Bananas and Green Shells on the way. While top speed and acceleration does increase, the Thunder Cloud will begin sparking, eventually shocking the player in shrinking them. Right after collecting a Phanto Key, a Phanto will appear and constantly chase the user. It will occasionally slide across the stage to try and ram into the driver, causing them to spin out. After some time, the Phanto Key will disappear and the Phanto will flee. However, the player can pass the Phanto Key onto another driver by bumping into them, causing the Phanto to chase them instead.

When used, the Cannon Box will grow wheels and position itself in front of the kart. It will automatically launch cannonballs that fly forward, knocking over drivers they hit. After several shots, the Cannon Box will disappear. Players can also tap the item button to fire cannonballs at a faster pace.

Special Items[]

Special Items return from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, being character-exclusive items. Only certain characters share the same special item, which is generally more useful than the rest of the items. Petey Piranha, King Boo, and Miis are unique in that they are able to obtain any special item.

After collecting the Ice Flower, players have the ability to throw iceballs forward or backward. They will bounce across the track and freeze any driver they hit for two seconds. Like the other flower items, collecting a Gold Flower will allow the user to fire projectiles forward or backward. The Gold Flower's golden fireballs will bounce along the track, and after hitting a driver, item, or wall, it will cause an explosion. This explosion will spin out all drivers in the radius, as well as turning all items into Coins, and turning Coins into Blue Coins. The projectiles, however, are fired less often than the Fire Flower and the Ice Flower due to its destructive power.
Bowser Shell

When thrown, the Bowser Shell acts similarly to a Green Shell, flying forward and ricocheting off walls. However, it is much larger and thus more durable. The Bowser Shell can plow through drivers and smaller items like Bananas and Green Shells without breaking as well. Getting hit by a Bowser Shell will knock the players sideways, as if hit by a diver with a Super Star or Bullet Bill.

Once the Heart is used, two small hearts will begin circling around the kart. These hearts, when they come in contact with items, will give the driver the item to use for themselves.

If it hits the driver or has traveled a certain amount of distance, the Yoshi Egg will break and reveal three random items. The possible items that are spawned are Mushrooms, Green Shells, Bananas, Super Stars, and Bob-ombs.

Once used, the Bill Blaster will station itself on the back of the kart. It will begin firing small Bullet Bills that fly forward. Should an opposing driver be nearby, the Bullet Bill will home in on them like a Red Shell, then explode to knock them over, as well as spin out any drivers in the blast radius. Players are able to tap the item button to fire Bullet Bills faster.

After a 1-Up Mushroom is used, it will begin floating around the kart. Should the driver fall off the track and into an abyss, water, or lava, the 1-Up Mushroom will pick up the driver much earlier than the Lakitu normally would, as well as grant a speed boost when the player returns to the track.

The Giant Banana can be place behind the kart or be thrown forward. It acts identically to a regular Banana, but its larger size makes it more difficult to avoid. In addition, once slipped on the Giant Banana will split into three regular Bananas. Items like Green and Red Shells cannot destroy a Giant Banana.

When a Mystic Stone is used, it will rise up into the sky. Afterwards, several Mystic Stones will begin raining all over the track, with their crash course indicated by a red circle on the ground. Drivers hit by falling Mystic Stones will spin out. They come in several colors, including rainbow, though there is no difference in function.

Using a Sun Blossom will electrically charge the kart for a short time. Touching another kart in this state will cause them to spin out and shrink, as if struck by lightning. In turn, the electric charge makes the kart immune to lightning-based attacks light Lightning Bolts, Thunder Clouds, and other Sun Blossoms.

Upon collecting a Poké Ball, the player can throw it forward or place it behind the kart. If another kart hits it, they will become trapped inside the Poké Ball for a short time. They can still move forward, albeit much lighter and slower. After awhile, they will emerge from the Poké Ball and drive as normal.

Vehicle Parts[]

As with Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, players are able to customize their karts, each combination granting different stats. Players can set the kart body, tires, and glider. The parts are listed as they appear in-game, and the values indicate the differences between the given parts and the standard parts. It is impossible for a combination to have any stat less than 0 or greater than 12.5. Kart bodies are separated into four groups; karts, bikes, ATVs, and special Dual Karts that are specific to Doubles mode.

Unlike the three aforementioned games, some karts are exclusive to a specific group of characters. These groups are determined by stat groups (see above). In the case of dual karts, should both characters be in different groups, access to either group's karts is granted. In addition, some parts will change colors depending on the character.

The method of unlocking vehicle parts is significantly different from previous games, as they must now be purchased from Toadsworth's shop.
