Mario Kart: Ancient Circuit has a roster of 36 characters for you to use, 24 of which are available from the start, and 12 which must be unlocked. This is on par with Mario Kart 8, six less than MK8 Deluxe, and probably far less than the rosters of many other Mario Kart games on Fantendo. Alex went with such a small roster because he believes in the philosophy of "less is more". Only eight characters are new to the series.
In addition to this, Alex has promised more characters through DLC packs; you can visit that article for more information on that.

Unlockable Characters[]
Name | Description | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mii |
How to unlock: Make one, using the Mii Maker function in the Garage.
Your Miis can compete alongside you for the relic! Victory Theme: A riff on the Wii's Mii Channel theme. | ||||||||||||
NES Mario |
How to unlock: Win the 50cc Fire Flower Cup.
A blast from the past, the lack of third dimension is no problem for NES Mario, but his lack of stats might be. Victory Theme: Mario's theme, in 8-bit. | ||||||||||||
How to unlock: Win the 50cc Feather Cup.
Inklings are ready to splat the completition...as long as you don't send them off-road, that is. (In this game, a bubble surrounds them whenever they drive into water.) Victory Theme: A riff on Calamari Inkantation. | |||||||||||||
How to unlock: Win the 50cc Tanooki Cup.
Alex does not like Animal Crossing very much (see how badly he shafted the series in Super Smash Stadium!), so it really is an honor to see Villager in a St. Clair Publications game, and even MORE of an honor that Villager is somewhat good. Victory Theme: Team Animal Crossing's win theme in the Smash Bros. games. | |||||||||||||
Sonic |
How to unlock: Win the 50cc Red Shell Cup.
The alleged "fastest thing alive", and his stats show it. Unfortunately, his stats also show the perils of being so fast: his lackluster Handling can cause him to go out of control, and his lack of Off-Roading can slow him down greatly. As with the Inklings, he's protected by a shield whenever he hits water, to spare you from having to hear his dreaded "drowning theme". Victory Theme: A riff on Green Hill Zone's theme. | ||||||||||||
Captain Falcon |
How to unlock: Win the 50cc Banana Cup.
HYESZ! Victory Theme: A riff on Mute City's theme. | ||||||||||||
Pikachu |
How to unlock: Win the 50cc Spiny Cup.
The star of the Pokémon franchise joins the race to catch all the relic pieces. Running like Koopa on steroids, Pikachu can certainly hold its own against its Mushroomian competition for some super effective Karting. Victory Theme: A riff on Viridian Forest. | ||||||||||||
Goomba |
How to unlock: Win the 100cc Mushroom Cup.
Why would you ever want to play as this? Joke Character, plain and simple. Victory Theme: The Super Mario Bros. 1 underground theme. | ||||||||||||
How to unlock: Win the 150cc Ice Flower Cup.
Bowser's loyal servant and his girlfriend both pretty much control like the big guy. Victory Theme: The Super Mario Bros. 3 castle theme. | |||||||||||||
How to unlock: Win the 150cc Hammer Cup.
The Hero of Time knows a thing or two about ancient relics. He'd pretty much control like a typical heavyweight if it weren't for that high Off-Roading stat. Victory Theme: A riff on the Zelda series main theme. | |||||||||||||
K. Rool |
How to unlock: Win the 150cc Buzzy Beetle Cup.
The kaptain of the Kremling Krew, who missed out on the chance to participate in his own universe's racing franchise, gets his chance to shine here. Victory Theme: A riff on the "Snaky Shanty" theme from DK Country 2. | ||||||||||||
File:BikerYukiSakura.png |
How to unlock: Get first place on Final Destination and unlock the game's best ending.
The "mascot" of St. Clair Publications and the last character to be unlocked in this game, she has nearly perfect stats! Victory Theme: A riff on the St. Clair Publications "theme", Last of the Wilds, by Nightwish. |
DLC Characters[]
Name | Description | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
File:Biker-peachette.png |
Part of DLC Pack 1, "Old School".
Peachette is pretty much an upgrade on the original Peach. Read this if you've got a problem. Victory Theme: The New Super Mario Bros. Wii bonus level theme. | ||||||||||||
Undyne |
Part of DLC Pack 2, "Mario Kart × Undertale"
Undyne suplexes the Ancient Circuit, just because she can. The fact that she's a fish is probably what gives her her high Off-Roading stat, and her Mini-Turbo is quite high for a heavyweight, but low Handling and Acceleration will make her flounder quite a bit. It should be noted that she doesn't wear an eye patch in this game, à la her appearance in Deltarune, despite otherwise having her normal appearance in UT. Victory Theme: A riff on her battle theme in Undertale. | ||||||||||||
Alene Keshishian |
Part of DLC Pack 3, "Butch vs. Femme"
St. Clair Publications' OTHER mascot is ready to race! Unleash her infamous road rage on the track and watch her go! Victory Theme: Same as Yuki. | ||||||||||||
Part of DLC Pack 4, "Naked"
That gimmicky accessory Nintendo made just to ensure that the NES would sell in America following the Great Video Game Crash is back from Mario Kart DS and ready to get a piece of that spotlight that Mario ultimately took! Victory Theme: The Golden Hammer's theme. | |||||||||||||
Part of DLC Pack 5, "Mario Kart × NASCAR"
The chief Magikoopas are ready to race! They've got the magic working in a straight line, but their bag of tricks runs dry in corners. Victory Theme: Kamek's intro theme in Super Mario World 2. | |||||||||||||
Pianta |
Part of DLC Pack 6, "Alex's 35th Birthday Bash"
Typical heavyweight racing, although their Off-Roading stat isn't too bad. I say "their" because four of the alts are female. Victory Theme: A riff on Casino Delfino's theme. | ||||||||||||
Noki |
Part of DLC Pack 6, "Alex's 35th Birthday Bash"
As you might expect from a water-dwelling race of people, the Nokis can turn on a dime and drive practically anywhere. As before, half the alts are male, while half are female. Victory Theme: A riff on the Noki Bay theme. |
