Mario Kart: Ancient Circuit has a roster of 36 characters for you to use, 24 of which are available from the start, and 12 which must be unlocked. This is on par with Mario Kart 8, six less than MK8 Deluxe, and probably far less than the rosters of many other Mario Kart games on Fantendo. Alex went with such a small roster because he believes in the philosophy of "less is more". Only eight characters are new to the series.
In addition to this, Alex has promised more characters through DLC packs; you can visit that article for more information on that.

The "typical" example of a lightweight, Peach is slow in a straight line, but high acceleration ensures she'll have no trouble reaching that low top speed, and high Handling, Off-Roading, and Mini-Turbo ensures she'll retain much of her speed. A slightly heavier lightweight, but Yoshi actually has a higher Off-Roading stat than Peach. This is a reference to the instruction manual of Mario Kart: Super Circuit, which implied that he was slowed down less by going offroad. Clearly a man of extremes, Bowser represents what a cynic might think of heavyweight racers. His top speed is quite high, but bottom-of-the-barrel everything else ensures he'll have quite a bit of difficulty reaching it. Tires, gliders, and ATV's are this guy's best friend if he wants to have a chance competitively. Oh, and accurate banana/shell snipes, shocks, bullets, stars, a lot of luck... In the featherweight division, we have Koopa. Great handling and drifting, but he gets beaten around like tissue paper. That shell can only protect him so much. Victory Theme: His victory theme from Super Mario Kart. | ||||||||||||

The "Boss Pakkun" is even more unbalanced than Bowser. His Handling and Off-Roading aren't as bad as most heavyweights (probably due to him being a Piranha Plant), but even the slightest of curves will be this guy's worst nightmare. The alleged "fastest thing alive", and his stats show it. Unfortunately, his stats also show the perils of being so fast: his lackluster Handling can cause him to go out of control, and his lack of Off-Roading can slow him down greatly. As with the Inklings, he's protected by a shield whenever he hits water, to spare you from having to hear his dreaded "drowning theme". It should be noted that she doesn't wear an eye patch in this game, à la her appearance in Deltarune, despite otherwise having her normal appearance in UT.
