Super Smash Bros. Resistance is the fifth game in the Super Smash Bros. series, developed by Ghostrealm Studios and HAL Laboratory Inc., and published by Nintendo. This is the first Super Smash Bros. game where Masahiro Sakurai is not playing a major role in the game's development.

Development[]

Super Smash Bros. Resistance was revealed at F3 during Ghostrealm Studios's presentation. It was revealed then that Masahiro Sakurai would not be involved in development, with Nintendo tasking Ghostrealm Studios with development instead. From an early point, the game would be developed with eSports focus in mind, while also retaining casual elements.

Gameplay[]

Super Smash Bros. Resistance retains the standard system seen in the first four games, in which players battle to raise a percentage, before knocking the opponent off the screen. Items exist as well, but can be turned off.

Each character is capable of neutral attacks, as well as two sets of special attacks to vary their arsenal.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS[]

In terms of the physics, Resistance's pacing is between Melee and Super Smash Bros. 4. However, sliders also exist for the past four games' physics, allowing players to pick what they want to play with. These physics engines are faithful to the originals, with wavedashing and even tripping enabled in the Melee and Brawl physics engines. As for the changes from Smash 4, they're below:

  • A "battle scars" feature now exists, where characters will change in appearance depending on how much damage they've taken. This can range from bruises, to battered weapons, to something as simple as missing ammunition clips.
  • The general art style resembles Smash 4, but characters from more cartoonish universes have more solid colors and less detail, while characters from more realistic universes have more detail.
  • Hitstun cancelling has been completely removed.
  • Palette swaps no longer exist, with characters having a colored outline around them instead to differentiate. In their place, a costume mechanic now exists, where characters have various alternate costumes that are far more creative than simple palette swaps. See them here.
  • Smash Balls now take more hits to break.

Differences between Versions[]

Although the general gameplay is the same, there are a few differences between the Switch and Enigma versions of the game:

  • The Story Mode is exclusive to the Switch version of the game due to concerns with cutscene rendering on the Enigma. In its place, there is an Adventure Mode similar to Melee's.
  • Graphical differences exist for obvious reasons.
  • Trophies are different between versions; the Switch version mainly has home console trophies, while the Enigma version mainly has handheld trophies.
  • The Enigma version is compatible with the personal assistant Enigina, who can inform the player when downloadable content is available, if balance changes have been made to the game, and many other useful features.
  • Cross-platform play doesn't exist, but the Enigma console can be used as a controller in the Switch version of the game.
