Salamence, known in Japan as ボーマンダ (Bohmander), is a fierce pseudo-legendary Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon. Salamence evolves from Shelgon at level 50, and is the final form of Bagon, who would finally achieve its dream of being able to fly when evolving into this Pokémon.

Salamence is able to Mega Evolve into Mega Salamence when holding a Salamencite.

Biology[]

Salamence is a quadruped, sky blue dragon with a long tail and six, a gray mandible jaw, and fin-like extensions on its head. The throat on its neck, the underside of its tail and parts of the underside of each leg is colored red. Salamence also has red ridges above its eyes, and two enormous red wings in the shape on an axe. Finally, Salamence has three, plate-like scaled on its belly.

As a Bagon, it has a long-held dream of being able to fly, and as a Salamence, this dream is now fulfilled. It is said that the desire to fly was so powerful, that it triggered a mutation in its cells when it was a Shelgon. Salemence express their joy by flying and wheeling all over the place while spouting out flames. Despite their over-joyous reaction, Salamence also gains a temper. When enraged, Salamence goes out of control and rampages through the entire location with its claws and its flames.

When Salamence Mega Evolves, it mutates even further. The white sclera of its fierce eyes become yellow, its gray jaw becomes red, and two of the three plate-like scales grow and become retractable handles for Salamence to grab on. It also got bumpy ridges on its hind legs, and its fin-like extensions become larger and longer (two of them even get a notch). But the most notable change is that its axe-shaped wings merge into one large wing that can fold, and got the shape of a crescent moon. These wings have also grown so large that Mega Salamence is smaller than its own wings.

When Mega Salamence flies at incredible speeds, its wing becomes some sort of blade, which cuts through anything that Mega Salamence encounters while flying.

Trivia[]

Origin[]

Salamence may be physically based on the salamander (likely the Hida salamander and the Anderson's salamander), as well as the archetypal European dragon. That Salamence might be based on a salamander can be traced back by the three prominent fin-like extensions, which resemble external gills, a trait most amphibians share with each other.

Mega Salamence might also be based on a hang-gliding pilot, with its wings having become one entity (similar to the wing of a hang glider) and its front feet being tucked in and holding handles (similar to a harness).

Name Origin[]

"Salamence" comes from the word salamander, as well as menace, vengeance, vehemence, or violence, referring to its violent nature.

Bohmander is a combination of 暴行 bōkō (assault, outrage, or violent act) and salamander.
