Mario's Nintendo Racing is an upcoming crossover mascot racing game developed by PI for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DSGo. As the name would suggest, the game features various characters and courses based off Mario and other Nintendo franchises.

Gameplay[]

Mario's Nintendo Racing plays similarly to other mascot kart racers, such as the Mario Kart (series) franchise, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Crash Team Racing. Players compete in go-kart races and control one out of a variety of characters on one of a variety of hazardous courses, both from various Nintendo properties. One of the game's many features is the use of various power-up items obtained by driving into item boxes laid out on the course (e.g. mushrooms are a type of item that give the player a speed boost). Each character also has their own unique "special" move, designed to help them catch up to other racers when falling behind. The type of weapon received from an item box is often random, though sometimes influenced by the player's current position in the race. For example, players lagging far behind may receive more powerful items while the leader will only receive small defensive items. Called rubber banding, this gameplay mechanism allows other players or computers a realistic chance to catch up to the leading player. Up to twelve characters can compete in each race and, on the Nintendo Switch version, up to four players can complete locally.

Players can receive an in-game currency known as "Nintendosh" as they play through the game. "Nintendosh" can then be used in the in-game shop to purchase new courses and characters to use.

Modes[]

The game includes a range of modes.

  • Grand Prix - Players compete in groups of four courses each - on the Nintendo Switch, up to four players can play this mode.
  • Time Trials - One single player races alone in order to finish any course in the fastest time possible. The best time is then saved as a ghost, which the player can race against in later trials. The player can also race against ghosts of other players online, and ghosts of the staff that made the game.
  • VS Race - Players race on any course of their choosing, with their own custom rules. On the Nintendo Switch version, up to four players can race.
  • Mission Mode - One single player attempts to complete various "missions" in this open-world Forza Horizon-styled take on the mascot racer mission mode.
  • Battle Mode - Players "battle" against each-other in various battle mini-games. This mode is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version, though Nintendo DSGo players can still play battle mode online.
  • Online - Players either race or "battle" against other players via the internet. On the Nintendo Switch version, up to four players can race.

Characters[]

The game features a total of 43 characters. 22 of these are unlocked by default, another 20 must be purchased from the in-game shop with "Nintendosh" and one can be unlocked by inputting the code "mach".

Franchise Image Name Description Special Move
SuperMarioLogo Mario art16 Mario I shouldn't need to explain who Mario is. I mean, who DOESN'T know who Mario is? Mario is an Italian plumber from the highly popular Super Mario series of games. He ALWAYS manages to save Princess Peach from the big koopa himself, well, with a little help, of course. Used to the Mario Kart line of games, how will Mario do in Mario's Nintendo Racing? Decent, I hope. He is the titular character, after all...

Mario drives his red Wild Wing from Mario Kart Wii on the, well, Wii.

Superstar
Mario gains a Super Star, which briefly makes him much faster, as well as being able to knock over any racer he bumps into. He's invincible!

Mario's special move is set to the chorus of Jump Up, Super Star! from Super Mario Odyssey.

SuperMarioLogo SuperMarioParty Peach Peach Princess Peach is the rightful ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, when she's not being kidnapped by Bowser... I mean, seriously, she gets kidnapped EVERY. OTHER. WEEK. A woman needs to rest, Bowser! Luckily, Mario always shows up to save the day. Princess Peach isn't totally reliant on who the rumour states is her boyfriend, she does have the occasional adventure of her own. Take Super Princess Peach on the DS as an example, or when she decided to go on holiday after the events of Super Mario Odyssey. She's a nice girl, too.

Peach's ride is the Royal Racer from Mario Kart Wii.

Heart
Princess Peach temporary becomes more swift and also gains a temporary shield of love. Slay, Peach, slay!

Peach's special move is a remix of the main theme from her "super" outing on the DS.

SuperMarioLogo Bowser - Mario Party 10 Bowser Bowser is the King of the Koopas, Mario arch-enemy and the main antagonist of the Super Mario series. I also hear he's quite the hunk where he comes from, but let's not debate that. Bowser is best known for constantly attempting to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnap its ruler, Princess Peach. He even tried to marry her once, but Mario managed to save the day, per the norm. Bowser never succeeds at any of his evil plans, but that doesn't stop him from trying. Whether its his desire for domination, or pure loneliness, we may never know. For now, at least, Bowser has decided to give villainy a break and wreck the competition at Mario's Nintendo Racing.

Bowser cruises on his own custom Bowser Mobile from Super Mario 3D World.

Shell
Bowser hides in his big koopa shell, and rolls himself to the top three at an insanely fast rate, knocking out any racer he bumps into. Let's see plumber boy stop him this time!

Bowser's special move song is his heavy metal anthem from the "Bowser's Castle" course on Mario Kart 8.

Zelda logo Linkultimate Link Well, who is Link? Well, he's main character of The Legend of Zelda series of video games, and is often mistakenly referred to as "Zelda" herself. Link appears as various reincarnations throughout the series, with this Link being from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch. Sometimes Link's a child, sometimes he's a teenager and sometimes he's an adult. No matter what he is, his goal is usually the same - to defeat Ganon and save Princess Zelda and Hyrule. Sounds easy enough, eh?

Link rides his Master Cycle Zero.

Bow
Link uses his bow an arrow to shoot any other racer he passes, causing them to freeze until Link's special move finishes. Link also temporarily gains more speed and weight. Hi-ya!

Link carries out his special move to the main Zelda theme tune, any Zelda fan knows what I'm talking about.

Zelda logo Zeldaultimate Zelda Princess Zelda could refer to anyone, really. Like Link, Zelda is part of a long line of reincarnations. She takes on the essential and destined role of Hyrule's monarch, which might lead you to think she's a lot like Princess Peach. Wrong! Zelda is actually a blood-lineage reincarnation of Goddess Hylia, a spirit she carries to protect the triforce - a magical triangular item split into three parts. At the moment, she's giving her normal duties a rest in favour of joining the Mario's Nintendo Racing competition.

Zelda's ride is the Hyrider, a custom made vehicle designed with similarities to Hyrule Castle.

Triforce
Zelda uses the triforce to temporarily speed off, slowing down anyone she passes.

Kirby Title Kirby OSSB Kirby First you draw a circle, then you dot the eyes, add a great big smile, and presto, it's Kirby! Kirby, as you might be wondering, is the titular pink puffball and protagonist of the Kirby series. Kirby possesses two very useful powers to help him on his quest (yes, Kirby's a boy, get over it). First, Kirby can inhale enemies just like a vacuum cleaner! Secondly, Kirby can then either spit his enemies out as weapons, or swallow them and gain their abilities! He lives in Dream Land, a country on Planet Popstar, but is temporarily residing by the Mario's Nintendo racing racetrack, ready to inhale the competition (that makes sense, right?).

Kirby pilots his Warp Star-shaped Starship from the anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya!

Warp Star
Kirby hops out of his Starship and into his actual Warp Star, which he uses to blast off to fourth place.

Kirby's special move is set to the main A remix of the Gourmet Race

Unlockable[]

Unlockable characters can be purchased with the in-game currency "Nintendosh".

Special[]

These characters are unlike the other unlockable characters, as they can't be purchased from the in-game shop and instead must be unlocked with a code.

Pallet Swaps[]

Pallet swaps are cosmetic changes to other characters in the game. They maintain the same stats and vehicle. Like other unlockable characters, pallet swaps need to purchased from the in-game shop with "Nintendosh". However, they are not counted as new characters and do not take up a character slot (a drop-down menu appears instead).
