Elma is on of the main protagonists of Xenoblade Chronicles X and central to the plot of Xenoblade Chronicles X. She is a BLADE colonel and the leader of the Reclaimers Division. She was tasked with retrieving the lifepods that were ejected from the White Whale, which was a United States Ark Ship. She recovers Cross in the prologue and is their first party member.
Prior to Earth's destruction, she served as the colonel of the Coalition Heavy Armor Training Unit or the "Skelleton Crew". She served as a subordinate to a unnamed hero who repelled the attack.
Elma has a strong sense of duty and is idolized by her team members at BLADE, Irina in particular. She uses cold logic and is very calculative, not letting personal feelings get in the way of her duties.
She does however, show concern for Cross after waking them up from the Lifepod. She acts as a guide for them, leading them to New Los Angeles. She expresses some disappointment at the Habitat Unit for settling near wildlife after having to fight off a pack of Grexes near the city's border. As she states, there is a fine line between self-defense and provoking a fight.
She is not arrogant, thinking of herself as equal to the other Blades. She shows deep remorse for the destruction of Earth, even though it is well into the past at this point.
