Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine 2 (Known in most of Europe as “Dr. Robotnik And His Mean Bean Machine Go Underground!” and in the UK as “Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine: Prophecy of Evil”) is a 1998 falling block puzzle game by Fantendo Studios for the SEGA Genesis and SEGA Saturn (the former only released in the UK and in compilations elsewhere.) It is a prequel to Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine for Genesis. While that game was set in the universe of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, this one is set in the Sonic Underground universe, hence it’s European title. The game is a modification of Puyo Puyo 2 on both platforms, and plays similarly.

Story

Dr. Ivo Robotnik was in plans for a conquest of Mobius and to overthrow their Queen Aleena. To do this, he stars building a machine that dispenses the citizens of Beanville (who were basically beans) and turns them into robots to rampage across the planet. One of the beans, Has Bean, gets saved from roboticization by the Oracle of Delphius, who tells him about Robotnik’s plan and that he is their last hope before doom strikes. Has Bean heads towards the tower where Queen Aleena would usually be, but she was out, giving Robotnik the advantage. He has to climb up the tower, facing Robotnik’s henchbots along the way and finding three lost medallions.

At the top of the tower, Dr. Robotnik was watching the planet getting claimed as his own until Has Bean showed up. Dr. Robotnik reveals he is using all of the power from the medallions to power up his robots as well as the beans. As the final fight goes on, each of the medallions power up.

After the fight has ended, Dr. Robotnik escapes the tower, saying that “he is not done yet!” The three medallions start glowing, and for a few seconds separate into three different places. He may have saved the beans who were roboticized, but Robotnik is not giving up on his plans. Has Bean realises this and drops into the machine, ready to save more of the beans who are still roboticized.

The puzzle mode, Underground Mode, has a story as well. Before the first puzzle, the Oracle of Delphius explains to the player that Has Bean is behind the scenes supporting the triplets of Queen Aleena, and needs to power up a prototype of the machine to call the beans’ attention and save Mobius. After the last puzzle, Sonic, Sonia and Manic are seen playing their instruments, with the Oracle of Delphius saying that the triplets are now ready to fulfil his prophecy and stop Robotnik, and concludes with a memo to watch Sonic Underground to see how they get on.
