Arguably the most frequently changed stage on Super Smash Stadium, Doomship Fields is an active stage. It debuted close to the end of Season 2 and was the 19th stage to debut overall.

Originally, it was known as Rainbow Cruise and was themed around Peach. It became Doomship Fields, switching to a Bowser theme in the process, on its third playing in Season 33. Halfway through Season 40 (on February 16, 2012), the stage disappeared for two years, not showing up in Season 41 at all, and returning late in Season 42 with much fanfare; its home character, Toad, also became Captain Toad at this time, presumably in advance of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Stage overview[]

Taking place in Bowser's Kingdom, the stage constantly autoscrolls to the right. The stage has a randomly-generated layout and the location of everything changes every time it's played on save for the huge patch of ground you start on. You are constantly bombarded by a fleet of army tanks, battle cruisers, and of course, airships. Unlike the actual navy level in SMB3, the lava underneath a battle cruiser actually is lava, and will burn you to touch. When transitioning to an airship, the stage scrolls up rapidly, then back down if transitioning to a tank or battleship. Only on an airship is the bottom kill zone accessible.

Yes, there are stage hazards. They attack at a very high frequency and rarely let up on you. Among the possibilities:

Changes[]

The last major change to this stage came on its first playing in Season 48, September 30, 2019. At that time, the Super Mario All-Stars Super Mario Bros. 3-esque appearance of the stage was swapped out for one resembling Bowser's Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey.

  • As noted above, the stage was originally known as Rainbow Cruise and featured a more static appearance, in which players fought on a single airship that used the Battlefield Layout. The ship at this point had a somewhat bizarre-looking pink paint job, which turned to blue in 1981.
  • On March 16, 1983, the stage was renamed "New Rainbow Cruise". With this rename came a new purple/orange paint job as well as a new, bigger layout. The set change actually came with some fanfare, even including playing the "how to play" music as if it were a new stage debut. The stage also took place in a sunset. On September 10, 1985, the stage gained a more "normal"-looking wooden scheme and went back to being in the daytime.
  • On May 7, 1993, the third layout debuted, a similar layout to what would become that of Pirate Ship three years later.
  • On June 8, 2001, the fourth layout debuted. This is Rainbow Cruise's layout in Super Smash Bros. Mêlée; as of this layout, the ship now "crashed" into an obstacle course and "sank" away. The obstacle course consisted of multiple assets from Rainbow Ride in Super Mario 64, including the swinging lifts, magic carpets, and wooden Donut Blocks. At the end of the obstacle course, the stage very quickly scrolled back down to restart the cycle. The stage went in a circle at this point.
  • Contrary to once-popular belief, when the stage became Doomship Fields on November 19, 2004, the layout did not change. However, the magic carpets and swinging lifts took on a more traditional Mario appearance (turning into Super Mario Bros. 1-style elevators with holes), as did the Donut Lifts. Bullet Bills were also added.
  • On May 11, 2005, the stage essentially went back to the second layout, but now with Bullet Bill cannons, cannonballs, and Rocky Wrenches.
  • The current layout debuted on April 22, 2008. At this point, the stage more or less still used a mishmash of Super Mario 64-esque graphics and its September 1984 set. When the stage returned from its hiatus on May 14, 2014, it was given new graphics more reminiscient of Super Mario Bros. 3.

In its own universe[]

Rainbow Cruise was based on Rainbow Ride, from Super Mario 64. Doomship Fields doesn't have a specific basis, and is based more on airship levels in the Mario series in general. The term "Doomship" has never been used in any official Nintendo productions, coming instead from the DiC-produced Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, the successor to their famous SMB Super Show.

The enemies seen on the current incarnation of the stage have all appeared on airship levels in the Mario games in some capacity, with Pom-Pom having made her debut on such levels.
