Doc Louis, full name Jerome "Doc" Louis, is a major recurring character in the Punch-Out!! series. In his prime, he was a heavyweight boxer, and was once champion of the WVBA. Years later, he retied and started coaching the sport. By chance, he met Little Mac, a spry kid who wanted to become a boxer, but no one would train him due to his small size. Seeing the potential in him, Doc Louis decided to take Little Mac under his wing, and trained him to compete in the WVBA. He also taught him the Star Punch, a flashy uppercut that was his signature move back in his boxing career.

In the series, Doc Louis helps Little Mac during his bouts. Between rounds, he sits just outside of the ring, and will often give Little Mac helpful advice on his opponents, such as how to counter certain attacks or describing their weak points. However, he is also prone to make jokes, some of the most iconic being telling Mac to join the Nintendo Fun Club and Club Nintendo in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and the Wii version of Punch-Out!! respectively. Doc Louis is also shown training Mac, which is best seen in Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, where the player actually gets to battle him.

Doc Louis is often funny and humorous, but is ultimately extremely supportive of Little Mac, cheering on for him when he wins and telling him to keep pushing onward when he loses. He also has a love for chocolate bars, his favorite food, and will often make jokes about it.

History[]

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!![]

Doc Louis first appeared in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! as Little Mac's boxing coach, albeit his role is relatively minor. As mentioned, he appears between rounds to give Little Mac advice on his opponents, but will also tell jokes. There is also a secret trick where Doc Louis can rub Mac's back to replenish some of his health, though this can only be used once per match. Doc Louis is also seen training Little Mac, riding on a bicycle as Little Mac runs with him through the streets of New York City.

Punch-Out!! (Wii)[]

Doc Louis has a much larger role in the Wii version of Punch-Out!!. He reprises his role as Little Mac's coach from the previous game, giving him advice between rounds. The trick to restore health is also present, though Doc Louis will eat a chocolate bar instead. Louis is also much more prone to make jokes, depending on how well Little Mac is doing in the match, sometimes making passive-aggressive jabs to his opponents.

Doc Louis will also appear after a match, either congratulating Little Mac for his victory, or telling him to try again and give him encouragement if he loses. He also appears in training montages between circuits, coaching him as he does sit-ups, push-ups, punches a sandbag, and runs with him on his bicycle just like he does in the NES game.

During Mac's Last Stand, Little Mac wants to go out in blaze and glory: he will fight challenger after challenger, retiring after three losses. Doc Louis is hesitant at first, but eventually agrees, supporting Little Mac the whole way through. Eventually, Little Mac does retire, and Doc Louis is seen walking through a museum. He sees a picture of him and Mac training, and he congratulates him before eating a chocolate bar and walking away.

Doc Louis's Punch-Out!![]

In Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, a WiiWare game sold exclusively to Club Nintendo members, Little Mac trains with Doc Louis, and actually gets to spar with him. There are three modes in order of difficulty: Warm-Up, Training, and Sparring. In all three, he only needs to be knocked down once to win the match, like King Hippo. He will often make small talk during the match, as well as give Mac commands just before his attack, such as "Block this!" or "Get down!" During Training, Doc Louis has more attacks and is faster, and can also step back to eat a chocolate bar, almost completely restoring his health. He can, however, be knocked down before he has a chance to eat it.

In Sparring, Doc Louis has many more tricks. His most notable move is a quick hook, which will give him a star, allowing him to use a Star Punch of his own, which will instantly knock down Little Mac. Like before, he can eat a chocolate bar, though Little Mac can punch it out of his hands. This causes him to get angry, and he tears out of his classic red jacket to reveal a leopard print shirt underneath. There is also a humorous warning from the WVBA, stating that the removal of Doc Louis' chocolate bar may be hazardous for one's health. From then on, Doc Louis will become faster and more difficult. After being knocked down, he congratulates Little Mac as he helps him up, asking if he wants some chocolate cake.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

Doc Louis appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. When Little Mac wins a match, he appears in all three of his victory animations, congratulating him. He may also cheer him on if he does a taunt. Doc Louis also appears as a Trophy obtained at random or by purchasing it from the Trophy Shop.

NTSC: "Every great boxer needs a capable teacher. Little Mac lucked out with former famous heavyweight Doc Louis. If he's not eating his favorite chocolate bar or making jokes, he's sparring with Little Mac. He'll gladly take a knockout blow from Little Mac if it will help the boxer make it big!"
PAL: "Behind every great boxer is a first-class coach, and energetic former heavy-weight champion Doc Louis is Little Mac's. Now and then, he'll put his chocolate bar down, his game face on, and spar with Little Mac, throwing punches just like in his glory days. No one's happier to take a knockout blow from Little Mac than Doc Louis!"

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Doc Louis returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, reprising his role in Little Mac's taunts and victory animations. However, due to the victory animations being universally faster, some of his quotes are shorter.

Doc Louis also appears as a Master Spirit. Defeating his Spirit battle will unlock his gym, where he can train up to four Primary Spirits at a time. Spirits left in the gym will periodically become stronger, even when the game is shut off. The Spirit battle is a Stamina battle against Little Mac, who has higher attack power and movement speed, and will get higher defense at random intervals.

The Doc Louis Spirit uses his artwork from the Wii version of Punch-Out!!.

Appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. Charged[]

Doc Louis is represented as a Trophy and Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Charged. He is an Advanced-type Spirit that lets the user become stronger after consuming Food when equipped. The Spirit battle is a Stamina battle against Wario, who is distracted by Food, which will constantly spawn. Humorously, only chocolate bars will spawn, referencing Doc Louis' love for them.
