Dark Echoes is a third-person action RPG heavily inspired by the Dark Souls series' combat, with heavy emphasis placed on patience and defense over blind aggression in fights. However, it is differentiated due to the player's character being literally blind, requiring different approaches to be taken when navigating the world and fighting monsters.

Gameplay

General

For the most part, the general gameplay of Dark Echoes borrows heavily from From Software's Dark Souls series. Players are equipped with three main stats to keep track of: Health, which signifies how much more damage a character can take before death; Mana, which is expended when using magical abilities; and Stamina, which is used up through physical exertion - attacking, sprinting, dodging, etc. Under normal circumstances, Stamina rapidly regenerates, Mana regenerates at a drastically slower pace, and Health does not regenerate at all.

Blindness

The sole playable character, Lady Ashlyn Sulluna, cannot see. To represent this lack of eyesight, the players' environment is normally shrouded in a total and nearly impenetrable darkness. In order to get their bearings, players use Ripples - vibrations created by noise. When a Ripple impacts with a surface, it reveals the geometry of that surface as a gray shape for a short time before it fades. Ripples will also reveal allies using pink tints, and enemies as vivid crimson silhouettes.

Even the smallest noises create Ripples, but even the loudest noises are nearly impossible to hear when you're too far away. If players are having trouble getting a basic idea of their surroundings, they have the option of Focusing. By Focusing, they can amplify the effectiveness of sounds massively, giving them a much better idea of their surroundings. However, they are more vulnerable in general when Focusing. They use up more Stamina, and especially loud noises will Deafen them, which will temporarily prevent them from sensing any Ripples at all.

Some of the more powerful enemies that the player faces will also be blind, and also sense their surroundings through Ripples. These enemies will be a distinctly darker color than others when touched by Ripples, and generally make more noise in order to produce more Ripples. Encounters with them when unprepared will almost certainly mean death. Players who don't want to encounter them can lure them away by making a loud noise elsewhere using a projectile, or just quietly creep by them while Focusing.
