Conatus Hunters is a sequel to Conatus developed by Pyro Enterprises, as well as many other contributor companies. Though it retains the core concept, the primary focus of the original game has been shifted from player-versus-player combat and more towards hunting down large bosses, with new gameplay cues being taken from games such as Dark Souls and Monster Hunter. Like the original game, Hunters is a free-to-start game that provides an increasing flow of content provided by other users.

Background

The lands of Algrim are uncharted and mysterious. The wilds have flourished here for centuries, undisturbed by the adaptations of man or society itself. As such, the lands have become home to a massive bestiary of creatures and monsters, creating a harmonic union between fantastic creatures of varying forms. However, while beasts flourish in Algrim, humans suffer- only a few wandering tribes are scattered across the land, fearful for their lives. With the dawning of a new era, however, people across the world are travelling to Algrim for a variety of purposes. While some desire the search for medicine, others look for riches and resources, but all who enter this land must now face the wrath of the beasts... and take on the wildest hunt of their lives.

The background history and lore of Conatus may be filled in over time as characters are introduced, and this lore will be compiled on the game's Lore page.

Gameplay

Much of the gameplay of Hunters is similar to that of the original game; inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, players are dropped into a vast map as a character of their choice and must accomplish an objective given to the group by the game, collecting resources and weapons as they go. These objectives are essentially the primary goals of the game; every time one is completed, that player is deemed the "victor", and another objective appears after a 1 in-game day delay in order to allow players to restock and prepare for the next objective. Every time the player dies, their character vanishes and their items are dropped onto the ground, and players must select another character to begin again with.

Much like the original game, each character has two primary stats, Health and Vigor. While Health remains the exact same as the original game, Vigor has been modified so that it no longer functions as a hunger meter, due to changes in how food works. Instead, it merely acts as a Stamina meter, being expended when players sprint or use special abilities. Each character also possesses multiple unique abilities, as well as passive perks or negative traits that can impact how they play.

The biggest change to the gameplay consists of the new focus on hunting down and defeating massive bosses that travel across Algrim. Considerably stronger than most enemies found in the original game, most objectives revolve around taking down these bosses, which can be done either via defeat or capture. Defeat simply involves slaying the beast, though this can be easier said than done based on how tough they are; capturing a beast, on the other hand, requires the use of traps and lures in order to incapacitate and secure the creature.

PvP is still a major focus of gameplay, however, as players are meant to compete against each other to bring down a boss first. Sabotage can be a viable strategy in these cases, enabling players to lure creatures into positions or traps where they are intended to battle against other players, though it is also a viable strategy to attack other players yourself. If need be, you can also ally with other players to take down bosses more effectively. Many fetch quest and combat-oriented objectives can appear outside of these bosses, similarly to the first game, which take on a more familiar PvP flavor.

Characters

Conatus begins with 10 free characters, similar to the original game. Following those 10, all characters can be purchased in order to be unlocked.

Please follow the Rules for character creation when creating a character. For help determining how to create a character, please consult the Character Guide.

Miriah
Biography
A young and optimistic soldier working for the Holy Ignosium Empire, who sail out to Algrim in hopes of finding gold and other resources. A faithful servant of the empire, Miriah's ready to do her best and fight for her country! Built around being welcoming to newcomers, Miriah's skillset is catered to easing players into the game, and while she excels in no particular field, she does possess some of the easiest monster tracking skills in the game, helping her track down goals easily!
Weapon 1
Ignosian Gauntlet - Melee
An armored gauntlet that's become the signature weapon of the Holy Ignosium Empire, it's famed for the extendable blade that bursts out of the gauntlet's wrist. Capable of dealing blunt damage with rapid punches, but holding down the button extends the blade for slower but more powerful slicing damage.
Weapon 2
Thunderbanger - Lure
A round grenade-like object made from clay and filled with pressurized air. When thrown, it creates a loud burst of sound to scare off smaller creatures or lure in larger ones, as well as knockback targets slightly to stagger them. The noise can also be used as a form of signal flare to alert others.
Weapon 3
Holy Shield - Shield
A standard metal shield used by Ignosium soldiers, emblazoned with their sigil. A standard shield that doesn't do much but protect, but it's very wide and large, giving it a lot of defensive coverage.
Skill 1
Tracedown
If Miriah is locked onto a target, she can utilize the Tracedown skill to accurately mark the target's footprints, enabling her to track it down over long distances. Only she can see footprints marked by Tracedown, and while the effect wears off after some time, the footprints left while it was active take longer to dissapate.
Skill 2
Claymore Dive
Miriah performs a powerful leaping attack that deals heavy slicing damage. If she lands on the back of a larger creature or character, she is able to deal additional damage by mashing the attack button once lodged on.
Traits
  • Holy Guidance - If Miriah dies, she is revived one time with 25% maximum Health and full Vigor, though she will drop her items similarly to that of an actual death. This only occurs once per life, and the next time Miriah dies, it will be for good.
  • Phalanx - Shields wielded by Miriah lose durability half as quickly as normal, even if they were taken from other players or already damaged when obtained.
  • Fireproof - Miriah's religious devotion and heavy armor render her immune to fire. Fire-based physical attacks will still deal damage, but she will not be burned as a result.
  • Hydrophobia - Miriah has a fear of water and has difficulties swimming. Vigor drains at double speed when in water.

Although she is unable to talk, she is sentient, expressing her emotions through body language instead of speech. While this does not completely protect her, this will create a shield made of flowers in front of her that negates ranged attacks (like projectiles), but will be instantly destroyed by melee and fire-based attacks.
Weapon 3
Honey Trap - Trap
Doombloom shoots out a patch of honey on the ground in front of her, which slows down enemies caught in it.
Skill 1

  • Flammable - Doombloom takes 20% more damage from fire-based attacks and will be burned for much longer.
  • Flower Stamp - Doombloom takes 10% more damage from weapons/traps/attacks designed to smash or crush foes.

An old, rusty broadsword. Should still be serviceable.

It is very slow with its attacks, but it deals lots of damage, and can deal minor magical damage with each slash. The blade is fairly long, making it cover quite a bit of area, though mind the speed.

Ranged

001
Rusty Knives
Thrown
A collection of rusted and ruined knives. Thrown at the target from afar to deal damage.
002
Chaingun
Gun
Heavy clockwork artillery that attacks by rapidly firing metal chains, in a manner that acts as a fusion between gatling gun and cat-o-nine-tails. It's very weak, but fires extremely fast, and the chains can be used to ensnare and hinder the target.
003
Naturalistic Bow
Bow
Crafted from hand-harvested wood and vines, this bow is 100% free-range organic. The arrows it launches are also hand-crafted, meaning they lack ammo, but as they're effectively giant splinters, this weapon also tends to deal massive amounts of damage.

Beasts

001
Schnozodon
Bestiary
The Schnozodon is a heavily armored reptilian creature that dwells in arid regions, the rocks growing atop its body forming a very heavily fortified shield. The rocks concentrate near the front of the beast's head, forming heavy plating resembling a nose and contributing to the creature's name. This heavy plating is the beast's primary offensive tool, as it will use it as a heavy battering ram in order to daze and crush opponents.
Family
Reptilian, Carnivore
Biomes
Arid, Desert
Attracted To
Visual, Scent, Meat
Notes
The Schnozodon has very limited eyesight due to its eyes constantly being shrouded by shadow from the rock coverage; as such, light-based tools have been known to stun them for long periods of time. This also hinders their powerful charge, as they cannot track targets and only travel in straight lines.
OOO
002
Tenocular
Bestiary
A giant one eyed sphere with ten striped tentacles oozing out of it. It oozes ink when it cries and flops around in land but is surprisingly quick in water. It looks very squishy.
Family
Octopoda, Asborber
Biomes
Wet, Beach
Attracted To
Visual, Touch, Heat
Notes
The Tenocular has a single eye that can be hit to limit it's vision, although it can detect heat so doing whatever you can to lower your body heat might be a good strategy so it truly can't see you. It is weakest on land and most powerful in the water, and when wet it can be tough trying to keep thing down. Aim for the eye and then cut off it's tentacles to give it less options.
OOO
003
Sheep-Creep
Bestiary
A giant, horse-like creature that boasts a coat of thick wool over its main body and the top of its head. It also boasts black fur underneath the wool. It also has a large pair of horns extending over its head, mainly used for ramming. It also boasts heavy hooves, and is seen using its wool to gather up electricity before discharging powerful blasts. These blasts can either be machine gun blasts of electrical bullets, charging up a ball that it fires forward to deal more damage, and summoning a powerful blast of lightning from where it stands to zap whoever's near it. On top of that, it's seen charging to either stomp foes or strike them with its horns.
Family
Equine, Omnivore
Biomes
Grasslands
Attracted To
Scent, Hearing, Plant
Notes
The wool makes it significantly harder for the Sheep-Creep to see, and it's a little slower than horses normally are. However, the fur also serves as a defense against physical weapons, meaning players should aim for the exposed sections. However, with slicing weapons and burning weapons, players will be able to get rid of the wool coat. Be warned though, while getting rid of the wool makes it unable to use electricity and reduces its defenses, it also makes it see easier and makes it run faster.
OOO
004
High Five
Bestiary
From a distance, this creature looks like a large bear. However, come closer and closer, and one will notice strange bumps over the flesh. Come closer, and one will realize those bumps are actually hands! High Five is an apparent quadruped that's made entirely of hands, each clasped around each other to form a series of limbs, with one giant hand forming the head, a set of eyes across the knuckles, and another set on the tips. When the large hand stretches its fingers out, one will see a nasty mouth running across the palm of that hand. High Five will initially try to charge "shoulder" first into opponents, but will also smack at hunters. It's seen rearranging its hands to form enlarged limbs to attack hunters, punching with the "head" hand, and even wrapping around hunters to try and gnaw at them. It is also seen rearing its "head" back to slap on the ground, as if giving a high-five. It is terrifyingly fast, though it is particularly weak to crushing/smashing attacks.
Family
Eldritch, Carnivore
Biomes
Grasslands
Attracted To
Sight, Meat
Notes
The creature appears entirely physical, though it is fast. As long as hunters stay far enough away from it, they should be able to pepper it with enough ranged attacks. It's also entirely dependent on sight for locating its targets.
OOO
005
Catchacrow
Bestiary
A human woman that has been forcibly controlled by a giant stickbug that extends out it's limbs from the corpse, appearing to crawl backwards on all fours. The corpse merely acts as a trap, as it springs up to anyone close to it and sticks it's sharp limbs inside it's target- should they not be fast enough to stop it, that is.
Family
Trapper, Bug
Biomes
Plains, Savannahs
Attracted To
Visual, Smell, Heat
Notes
The Catchacrow is fast but not particularly well-guarded. It also doesn't have that much health. That being said, it has a lot of attacking power so you'll want to keep your range. Be wary if you see corpses- Catchacrow always seem to use women as the "shell", but they leave remains of their victims in their wake.
OOO
006
Kitsune
Bestiary
Beware of traveling the wilderness. Especially when there's a flirtatious giggle in the air. Among the creatures in the world, most of them seem intent on gathering food to survive. However, some creatures instead seem to wish specifically to fool and harm travelers. That is the kitsune, a creature typically known to take two forms. One is a beautiful woman, and one is a multi-tailed fox beast that attacks unaware travelers. By the time travelers see the beauty, she'll transform before there eyes, becoming a fox even bigger than a bear, and wielding a set of tails. If they initiate combat, travelers are almost guaranteed to take the first hit. Along with rapid bites, claw-first lunges, deploying magical fireballs, and whipping their tails around, they're also known for transforming into beautiful ladies mid-combat, only to pull out a slicing melee weapon. Fighting the human forms is like fighting another hunter, so be careful!
Family
Trapper, Canine
Biomes
Jungle, Forest
Attracted To
Visual, Sound, Gold
Notes
As a fox, these creatures appear fast. Their bites don't have much range, but their lunges have plenty of linear range, their tail whips cover a wide area in front of them, and their fireballs have tracking. Despite this, some recommend facing the fox-form, for the human forms seem to have studied other hunters, learning some of their tactics and becoming monstrosities in one-on-one combat.
OOO
007
Nipping Jellyfish
Bestiary
A terrible creature larger than a boulder. These monstrosities look like jellyfish, except they bear a set of straight teeth (which is visible beneath their globe-like heads), and their stingers have been seen to be able to split open, revealing large rows of teeth within the stingers, before they clamp upon foes to chomp them. These creatures are often seen in the water, though they occasionally peek out of the surface. Their bodies are very squishy and not defensive, save for the teeth (and the tentacles, due to the presence of teeth within them). When encountered, these monsters will immediately try to hock poisonous globs at its prey, or spray a poisonous cloud from the tips of its stingers. After that, though it occasionally uses those attacks if its prey is out of reach, it'll try to lash its stingers around to slice at foes, stab its stingers forward to try and stab foes, spin around to create a spiral of slicing death, attempt to rush right into its foes, or try to use its main mouth to bite down on foes.

Notes
The Jellyfish's main body is considerably weak, due to the lack of bones. Its tentacles and teeth, however, take less damage from physical attacks than usual. Its main body is especially weak to slicing/piercing weapons. Furthermore, it's well known for its poisonous affinity, and has an affinity for stabbing/slicing. Its tentacles also cover a relatively large area around it, so try to keep your distance, and bring along equipment for poison.
