Coins (also called Gold Coins, or Mushroom Coins in the Beanbean Kingdom) are collectibles in the Mario franchise, as well as spinoff franchises such as Yoshi. They are also used in a similar manner in very many other videogames, to the point of being a genre convention in platformers.
Coins are found throughout courses, most often out in the open or inside ? and Brick Blocks. Coin Blocks contain ten or more coins that the player has a limited time to collect after first hitting the block. This can reward a Super Mushroom or a shower of coins. In New Super Mario Bros. 2, collecting them all turns the Coin Block into a wearable Gold Block.
In most core games and some side games, grabbing either 100 or 50 coins (depending on the game) earns the player character an extra life, equivalent to getting a 1-Up Mushroom. The coin counter usually has two digits, and then rolls over to zero. Other games use coins as a general currency, allowing the player to store many more.
In the 3D Super Mario games prior to Super Mario 3D Land and in many fangames inspired by them, collecting a coin restores one segment of health, making them more valuable in sparse numbers. As a result, enemies tend to drop coins when defeated, and fewer coins may be required for an extra life. They also replenish Mario's oxygen meter when swimming underwater. In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, collecting 100 coins within a mission can reveal a secret Power Star or Shine Sprite.
Coins come in many different colors, such as yellow, blue, red, purple, and green, and many different denominations and variations. All of these can have different effects, and may or may not count toward the main coin counter.
