Final Smash Mega Charizard X/Charizard Y

Charizard makes it's third appearance as a playable character to the Super Smash Bros. franchise in Super 5mash Bros. 5. A dual Fire and Flying type from Pokemon Red and Green, it is the fully evolved form of the Charmander line, starter Pokemon the the playable character. It is capable of utilizing powerful fire attacks as well as soaring up into the sky away from enemies. It's fire can melt the strongest steel. Aesthetically, it appears is f in the game Pokken Tournament.

Changes from SSB4

  • With the gliding mechanic back, Charizard is able to glide though is a bit slower compared to the rest of the cast.


Special Custom Set A

Name Damage Description
Neutral Special Flamethrower 2% (clean), 1% (late) Charizard spits repeated flames that gradually weaken if the attack is held, similar to Bowser's Fire Breath.
Custom 1 Fire Fang 2% (flames), 8% (finish) A short-range fire-breathing attack that hits quickly. Releasing the button finishes the move with a small explosion.
Custom 2 Fireball Cannon 3% (clean), 2% (late) Fires distinct balls of fire that travel far and will not weaken over time, but does less damage than Flamethrower.
Side Special Flare Blitz 4% (collision), 15% (explosion) Charizard does a very powerful dashing tackle that causes recoil damage at the beginning of the move and again on contact. Has heavy armor (14%)
Custom 1 Blast Burn 4% (collision), 5% (explosion loop), 9% (explosion last) A slower, shorter ranged version of Flare Blitz that deals more damage to both Charizard and its opponent. Has heavy armor (14%)
Custom 2 Dragon Rush 1.2% (per hit) Does multiple hits with less power overall, but Charizard takes no recoil damage and will not stop moving if it hits an opponent.
Up Special Fly 5% (hit 1), 2% (loop hits), 4% (last hit) Charizard rises upward while performing a corkscrew. The final hit has great knockback. Has super armor.
Custom 1 Rising Cyclone 4% (hit 1), 2% (loop hits), 6% (last hit) Recovery distance is reduced, but Charizard can suck in opponents and launch them. Has super armor.
Custom 2 Fly High 0% Deals no damage, but has an increased vertical distance. Has super armor.
Down Special Rock Smash 14% (headbutt), 3% (fragments) Charizard pulls out a giant rock and headbutts it, breaking it into pieces. Has super armor.
Custom 1 Sinking Skull 10% (ground), 12%/9% (air) Charizard headbutts the opponent, causing them to get stuck in the floor.
Custom 2 Rock Hurl 8% (headbutt), 2% (fragments) The rock fragments fly further than Rock Smash, but deal less damage. Has super armor.

Special Custom Set B

Name Damage Description
Neutral Special Flame Burst 8% (impact), 2-6% (second impact) Charizard fires a ball of fire form it's mouth. When it impacts the opponent, ground, or a solid object; it shoots out 3 additional fireballs into the air which will deal additional damage. The trajectory of the fireballs depends on where the impact was.
Custom 1 Inferno Burst 0% (impact), 0% (second impact) The impacts deal zero damage but engulfs the opponent/object in flames and can catch others on fire. The fire is very powerful and have a longer duration; dealing fire damage over time. It can also catch other characters who come into contact with the player onf ire.
Custom 2 Flame Spread 4% (per hit) Charizard fires up to 6 balls of flame that, when they impact, won't separate but will begin to burn on the ground. They are fired at the same time but spread out as they arch downwards.
Side Special Fire Spin 4.5 ( per hit) charged), 2.5% (per hit uncharged) Charizard breathes out a tornado of fire that travels forward; the length depends on how much it was charged. It doesn't do knockback but it carries the opponent as it travels forward. The longer the charge, the more damage and hits it does. It has slight suction effect.
Custom 1 Fire Hurricane 12% Charizard doesn't charge it releases a fire that spins around him; damaging opponents that get's too close. The suction effect is much stronger.
Custom 2 Sudden Fire Spin 7% The Fire Spin doesn't have to be charged but is weaker. It comes out much faster and throws opponents upwards as it passes by.
Up Special Tailwind 3% Charizard can charge up this attack to increase his recovery distance but not the damage. When fully charge, it propels him upwards using a sudden burst of wind. If fully charged, it knocks opponent back further. It then puts Charizard into a gliding state.
Custom 1 Heated Tailwind 5% More powerful version with less recovery distance. It sets the opponents on fire instead of pushing them away.
Custom 2 Whirling Tailwind 1.5% It will suction in opponents and cause them to travel along with Charizard as it moves upwards. It then launches them away at the end.
Down Special Dragon Pulse 25% (full), 18% (mid), 12% (quick) Pressing the special will cause Charizard to anchor himself tot he ground and then release a powerful beam of purple dragon energy. Pressing the special fires it as various damages. At fully powered, it leaves Charizard vulnerable with ending lag as it pushes him backwards and puts him at a grounded/aerial helpless state. The attack is also reduced in power after a fully charged. A fully charged travels less than a quick charged one. It will strike the opponent and push them backward; dealing a fixed amount of damage.
Custom 1 Fire Dragon Pulse 24% (full), 16% (mid), 10% (quick) Slightly weaker but has a wider beam attack that has more vertical damaging hitboxes.
Custom 2 High Dragon Pulese 25% (full), 18% (mid), 12% (quick) Does the same amount of damage but the player can influence where the beam will travel by tilting the control stick. As a result, it will launch players instead of doing hitstun.

Final Smash

Final Smash 1 Charizard X 2% (charge loop), 10% (charge last), 5% (blast collision), 1% (blast loop), 5% (blast last) Charizard transforms into its powerful Mega Evolution from Pokémon X. Similar to Super Dragon, Charizard consistently hovers around the stage. It has two attacks: a physical one where it spins in any given direction, and a projectile, allowing Charizard to shoot Fire Blasts at opponents.
Final Smash 2 Charizard Y 4% (grab), 8% (travel), 35% impact), 30% (explosion impact site), 20% (mid range), 15% (far) Charizard transforms into his Mega Evolution Y form from Pokemon Y. It will dash forward and grab the first opponent it can. It will then fly up into the air and a very fast speed and, after some time, come crashing down with the opponent to the ground. It causes a massive explosion that not only damages the trapped opponent but those close by.

  • Charizard crouches down ans then stands back up; spreading out his wings while roaring.

Character Selection Screen

  • Charizard roars and spits out flames.
  • Charizard blows out a pillow of fire upwards.
  • Charizard slashes forward and slams his tail backwards.

On Screen Appearance

  • Charizard emerges from a Pokeball with spits out a puff of fire while roaring.
  • Charmander appears and then evolves into Charmeleon and then to Charizard. Charizard roars.
  • Charizard appears from the top, crashing down to the stage while wrapped in fire.

Victory Animations

  • Charizard roars and spreads out its wings as if to fly.
  • Charizard stomps forward; roars upwards in flames, and then poses.
  • Charizard does a Flame Blitz into the ground, crashes, and then poses.
  • Charizard stomps several times before roaring out loudly.
  • Charizard poses with Charmander and Charmeleon; each blow out fire from their mouths.
  • Charizard shoots up into the air and then vanishes. Several seconds later, he is visible in the background; expelling fire into the ground.

Losing Animation

  • Charizard looks forward while flapping his wings slightly and clapping.
  • Charizard appears angry and is expelling fire from its mouth.
  • Charizard has smoke rising from its nostrils and appears very tired.

Victory Fanfare

A flourished remix based on the "Vs Gym Leader" song with rock N7 roll influences from Pokemon Red and Blue

Idle Poses

  • Leans back and stomps the ground.
  • Spits fire onto the ground.
  • Spreads it's wings and straightens up.
  • Slams its tail onto the ground.


Charizard's trophies can be earned by completing Classic Mode, Adventure Mode, All-Star Mode, and Boss Battle mode. In addition, further trophies can be found during matches and at the Trophy Shop.
