CDX Heroes: Brawl is a 2.5D action beat-em up game released for the Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 Pro, Nintendo Switch, Sega Galaxy, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, The V2, CDX Nitro 8, CDX Nexus, CDX Ultra, and the Weird-O-System.

Depending on what version you play on, all versions of the game were developed by Rainbow Studios, Heavy Iron Studios, and Next Level Games, with Incinerator Studios (still alive fanon wise) handling development in the PC and Sega Legacy versions of the game. Avalanche Software published the CDX Nitro, Nexus, and Weird-O-System versions of the game, while Acclaim Entertainment handled publishing for the rest of the versions of this game. All versions of this game were distributed by CDX Software.

This game plays out similar to the Super Smash Bros. series, but takes heavy influence on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion. An interesting thing to point out is that this game was made under Nintendo's license. See Production for more details.

Gameplay[]

CDX Heroes: Brawl has you try to knock out your opponent, like in Smash. However, once your opponent has 100%, you have to KO your opponent as fast as possible, because they will slowly heal themselves over time.

Unless disabled, a floating CDX logo, nicknamed the Attack Orb, will start flying around, and after a long time of not being used, will float away. Destroying it will grant you with your All-Out Attack, that will severely damage your opponents. Opponents with over 100% will be instantly KO'ed.

Characters[]

Unlike in Smash and PSASBR, and just like in Punch Time Explosion, cartoon characters are represented instead of video game characters. Depending on what console version you play on, they have exclusive characters released on what console they're exclusive on. The CDX Nexus, Ultra, and Weird-O-System versions are the only versions of the game to have all characters in their roster, exclusive or not.

Here are the characters in order.

Production[]

CDX had always wanted to make their own Smash game for years, but couldn't do to fears of getting a lawsuit by Nintendo. Nintendo heard this and let them start development, but after CDX Heroes: The War Of The Worlds had finished it's only DLC pack.

Full Moon Studios didn't take part in developing this game, due to Full Moon being sold to Electronic Arts. CDX would later revive Acclaim Entertainment, Incinerator Studios, and Midway Games, while buying THQ Nordic, Next Level Games, and Heavy Iron Studios. Warner Bros. would later buy CDX, which CDX approached with Avalanche Software to assist them.

Release[]

The game was released in Doodle Land (a fanon country) on October 23, 2019 and in the United States on July 15, 2020, and will be released in the rest of the world in 2021.

Marketing[]

The trailer was unveiled at E3 2019, the same time Warner Bros. acquired CDX. CDX spent $35 million dollars on advertising in theaters, TV spots, drinks, radio ads, and more.

Reception[]

The game was universally praised by critics, with many of them praising the idea of including cartoon characters from various universes. Metacritic gave the game a 98 out of 100. IGN, however, gave the game 5.2 out of 10, criticizing some aspects. IGN's review garnered minor contreversy among critics, fans of the game, and CDX themselves.

Trivia[]

  • This game has 214 characters, the second most ever in a single fighting game, supprasing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and behind Fire Pro Wrestling Returns.
    • The previous game had 32 characters. They are joined by a whopping 188 newcomers!
  • WALL-E, Little Guy, Dr. Beanson, Spider-Man, Roblox Noob, Tripod, Zilla Jr., Cyber-Zilla, 2013 Teen Titans, and Serena are the only characters from the previous game that do not return, and never will. Read more about it here.
  • This is the only appearance of the PlayStation (sans PaRappa), Xbox, and Clarence characters on the CDX Nexus.
