A Buzzy Shell (Buzzy Beetle Shell in Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS; colloquially called a Shelmet) is a smooth, fireproof, navy-blue Koopa shell. Buzzy Beetles typically wear them, and retract inside when stomped on.
The empty Buzzy Shell becomes a wearable item in Super Mario Maker, with a more destructive counterpart in the Spiny Shell. It is worn as a helmet when it lands on a player character's head, or when a character crouches while holding one.
The resulting form, called Buzzy Mario, is impervious to damage from above and deflects enemies such as Thwomps. Buzzy Mario stacks with most power-ups (aside from the Mystery Mushroom), and is removed when the user takes damage, allowing them to take an extra hit before losing a life. Like Super Mario, Buzzy Mario can break Brick Blocks, even if Small Mario is wearing the shell.
The Buzzy Beetle Shell is Buzzy Beetle's Special Item in Koopa Kart: Double Trouble!!, with Spiny's counterpart being the Spiny Shell. It is the Koopa Kart counterpart to the Birdo Egg, which is Birdo's Special Item. It can be obtained from 3rd to 7th place. When used, it will act like a Red Shell in that it will target the nearest racer ahead of the user. Once it hits its target, it releases three random items onto the track. Any three of the following items can be released: a Green Shell, Banana, Bob-omb, Mushroom, or Star. These items can help or harm anyone. It also appears as the icon for the Buzzy Beetle Shell Cup, the Koopa Kart equivalent to the Banana Cup.
