The Boomsday Machine is a recurring boss in the Mario series, first appearing in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is a massive machine manned by Bowser Jr., built in the shape of a tower. It is armed with various weapons, such as cannons that fire balls of electricity, fans that vacuum the surrounding area, and Fire Bars that constantly circle around it. Bowser Jr. uses the Boomsday Machine against Mario to protect a Grand Star in Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker.
History[]
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
The Boomsday Machine first appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is the final boss of World 5, encountered in Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker during the mission "Bowser Jr.'s Boomsday Machine". When Mario reaches the large tower, Bowser Jr. is seen piloting it, planning on using it to defeat Mario once and for all to make his father proud of him.
In order to damage the Boomsday Machine, Mario must scale the tower and damage Bowser Jr.'s cockpit with a Ground Pound. In order to do so, he must grab a Cloud Flower and become Cloud Mario, creating cloud platforms underneath fans that push him upward, giving him the necessary height. However, he must be careful of the Boomsday Machine's cannons, which fire balls of electricity that home in on him. These not only damage Mario, but also make clouds they touch disappear. There are also Fire Bars that circle around the tower along the ground, which he must jump over. After Mario uses a Ground Pound on the cockpit once, the Boomsday Machine adds another attack where it uses fans to vacuum up the surrounding area. This can pull a cloud from underneath Mario's feet. Mario must also be careful about an electric barrier that sometimes appears around the cockpit, which will damage him if he tries to use a Ground Pound on it.
After being attacked twice, the tower rises out from the ground, revealing massive tank treads. The Boomsday Machine will now move around the arena during battle, which combined with the increase in height makes it much more difficult to scale. The tank treads can also squish Mario, immediately taking a life from him. Regardless, after one more Ground Pound to the cockpit, the Boomsday Machine is destroyed and Bowser Jr. is sent flying into space. He leaves behind the Grand Star, which Mario collects and uses to open the path to World 6.
The Boomsday Machine is also battled in Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker's Prankster Comet mission, "Boomsday Machine Daredevil Run". In it, Mario must reach and defeat the Boomsday Machine without taking damage, as he will lose a life immediately if he does. Its attacks are the same as the regular encounter, and defeating it again grants Mario a Power Star.
