Animal Crossing & Sonic at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 is a 2023 crossover sports game on the Nintendo Switch made by SEGA and Nintendo. It is a successor of the Mario & Sonic series but features Animal Crossing instead of Mario.

The game started development in 2022 after SEGA purchased the right to the official Paris 2024 video game. Early in development, it was decided by Nintendo that the game should include Animal Crossing instead of Mario due to the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well as to make the game stand out from its predecessors. The companies agreed to this but made sure to still include Mario references in the game.

Characters[]

Playable[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog series, there are 10 characters who are playable in every sport, as well as guest characters limited to three normal sports and two Dream Events each. In the Animal Crossing series, the jock and sisterly villagers are playable in every sport and other villagers are limited to one sport each. Every villager from Animal Crossing: New Horizons is playable. Sanrio villagers are also playable but can only be unlocked by scanning the Sanrio Amiibo cards. All Animal Crossing characters wear event-specific clothing, though, unlike most Sonic characters, they do not wear shoes in any sport (except for Tiansheng). Playable Animal Crossing characters also wear birthday hats on their birthday.

In addition to pre-existing characters, the player can play as custom characters, which can be Miis, Villagers, or Avatars. The game has a character storing system that allows the player to save up to 100 characters. Custom characters can be created in the game or imported from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Sonic Forces, the Switch console, or any Nintendo Switch game involving Miis. Players with Nintendo Switch Online can also share custom characters and access custom characters shared by others. Custom characters can also wear outfits, which affect their stats. Custom characters can have one of 12 favorite colors, which affects the color of their default outfits and equipment for each sport.

Sonic characters who are playable in a specific event all have their unique versions of the equipment. Animal Crossing characters have equipment based on one of ten different styles. Custom characters start with generic equipment with color determined by their favorite color, though the equipment can be customized for each custom character. In team sports, the style of the equipment is determined by the team leader.

In total, there are 437 playable characters, excluding custom characters but including Sanrio villagers. This includes 24 Sonic characters and 413 Animal Crossing characters. Out of the Animal Crossing characters, 83 are playable in every event and 330 (including all 6 Sanrio villagers) are playable in only one event.

When CPU opponents in a sport are determined, each opponent has a 50% chance of being a Sonic character and a 50% chance of being an Animal Crossing character, meaning any individual Sonic character is more likely to show up compared to Animal Crossing characters as there are more playable characters in the latter series. However, in some events (particularly team events), the total number of characters is greater than the number of possible playable Sonic characters, in which case, it is more likely for there to be more Animal Crossing characters than Sonic characters. Each event-specific character is also more likely to show up compared to any individual character who appears in every sport.

VIP Characters[]

VIP characters return from the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. They can be found in the audience of events and if spotted, give the player extra Bells in addition to the Bells earned when normally completing the event. Finding a character for the first time also unlocks new items to buy in the Olympic Village.

Some VIP characters can be found at any point of the year but others can be seasonal and only be found during specific months. 11 of the seasonal characters are from Animal Crossing. Characters also have different rarities and rarer characters give bigger rewards. Seasonal characters are common during their seasons but give more Bells than common characters. In addition to Animal Crossing and Sonic characters, Mario characters can also be VIP characters.

The timing of Pavé, Zipper, and Lanolin depends on the timing of Easter. Pavé and Zipper always show up during the months of their respective holidays, so Pavé shows up during an earlier month than Zipper. Lanolin shows up during the month in which neither of the two appears.

  • If Easter Sunday falls between March 22 and 31 (i.e. Festivale is in February and Bunny Day is in March), Lanolin shows up in April.
  • If Easter Sunday falls between April 1 and 17 (i.e. Festivale is in February and Bunny Day is in April), Lanolin shows up in March.

Item Symbol Series Description
Gold Nugget Gold nugget Animal Crossing The player gets bonus points. The exact number of points varies depending on the event.
Invincibility Four-pointed white stars Sonic the Hedgehog The player becomes invincible for about 12 seconds, during which any attacks by opponents are ineffective and obstacles do not slow them down or hurt them. The music is temporarily replaced with a remix of the invincibility theme from Sonic the Hedgehog.
Magnet Red magnet with white ends Sonic the Hedgehog Pulls useful items in the player's direction. Remains effective for about 10-15 seconds. The music is temporarily replaced with a remix of the Island Tour theme from Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Slot Machine OK Motors symbol Both The player gets a slot machine where they have to stop three images. If they get three matching symbols, they get bonus points based on which character shows up. The possible characters are Classic Sonic, Giovanni, Cream, Isabelle, Charmy, and Tom Nook. Classic Sonic and Giovanni give the highest bonus, which is higher than the bonus given by gold nuggets. The Brake Tapper music from Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp plays and the event timer is temporarily stopped. If the player takes too long, they get no bonus and the event resumes.
Shield Cyan circle Sonic the Hedgehog A bubble appears around the player and protects them from the next attack. The bubble stays until the player is attacked or they finish the event.
Speed Boost Sonic's shoe Sonic the Hedgehog The player's speed is increased for approximately 10-15 seconds, but they are still vulnerable to attacks. The music is temporarily replaced with the speed boost theme from Sonic Adventure.
Wasps Wasp nest Animal Crossing Wasps appear near one of the opponents and sting them. The stung opponent is stopped for about 2 seconds and their speed is reduced to 0. The wasp sting music from Animal Crossing: New Horizons is played for the player who got stung.

Tasks[]

Both modern pentathlon and dream city living include five short tasks, which the player has to complete within a time limit, and completing a task gives the player points. Each time a task reappears, it gets harder, requiring the player to do more within the same time limit. The event ends for a player when they fail 3 times and whoever has the highest score wins.

Modern pentathlon tasks:

  • Fencing: Hit Eggman Nega using specific tactics.
  • Show jumping: Jump over fences.
  • Freestyle swimming: Swim a specific distance.
  • Pistol shooting: Shoot targets.
  • Cross country running: Run a specific distance.

Dream City Living tasks:

  • Fortune Shop: Sort good (blue) and bad (red) fortunes.
  • The Marquee: React to Dr. Shrunk's performances with the appropriate emotion. These are laughter (comedy/yellow background), sorrow (tragedy/blue background), fear (horror/purple background), and delight (no specific theme/green background).
  • GracieGrace: Pick the correct type of clothing.
  • Auction House: Bid for items by picking the lowest number that is higher than the price tag (possible options are 500, 1,000, 5,000, or 10,000).
  • Shampoodle: Pick hairstyles matching a picture shown above.

Story[]

The story mode involves the player controlling a custom character who has to recruit a team of eight Sonic characters and eight Animal Crossing villagers (one of each personality) in order to save the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The story involves Dr. Eggman and Redd stealing the Eiffel Tower in order to take over Paris. Following this theft, Redd replaces the Eiffel Tower with a fake one, with only Blathers being able to tell the difference.

Olympic Village[]

The Olympic Village is similar to the Christmas Village from the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. It serves as both a shopping section and also allows the player to view their achievements. Whenever the player enters a building for the first time, the character running the building explains how it works. Items are paid for with Bells, the in-game currency earned by playing the game.

Music Shop[]

The Music Shop is run by K.K. Slider. This shop is decorated with album covers and musical instruments.

In this building, the player can listen to any music which they have previously heard in the game. There is also a shopping section, which involves buying songs that are remixes of K.K. Slider songs or Sonic music. Before the player buys a song, they can listen to a 10-second preview. Once bought, the music can be used as background music in most events and the player can listen to them at any point. As such, these songs work as loops.

Each K.K. Slider song also has cover art. The Animal Crossing songs reuse their official cover art but the Sonic songs have all-new cover art designed specifically for the game. As with Animal Crossing songs, every Sonic song has K.K. on the cover, often alongside Sonic characters.

Every song that can be bought also has a K.K. Slider version, which involves K.K. Slider playing the guitar and singing. These versions are available for free but cannot be used as background music in events. The K.K. Slider versions are usually quite different but have the same base melody.

Olympic Museum[]

The Olympic Museum is run by Blathers. In the museum, there are many decorations related to the Olympics. There is also a statue of Mario with an Olympic medal as well as a painting of Mario and Sonic jumping over hurdles (the cover art of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games).

Unlike other locations, the Olympic Museum does not involve buying items and instead lets the players view items they have unlocked by playing events and the story mode. This includes all medals.
